HTC Rezound Drops to $199 at Verizon Just Two Months After Release

image

We can’t say that we are surprised by this move, but the HTC Rezound has already dropped to just $199 on 2-year contract at Verizon. Introduced only 2 months ago as one of the top 4G LTE phones built to date, this phone was stuck with the difficult task of competing with the DROID RAZR and Galaxy Nexus out of the gate. Originally priced at $299, this is a pretty major price drop.

If you had been eyeing the Rezound, especially after HTC released a bootloader unlocking solution for it, nite would be a great time to jump on it.

Buy.

Cheers Josh!

I also notice that the screen is way more sensitive than, say, my old OG DROID. If I hover my finger very close to the screen for too long, it registers a click. That’s a little hard to get used to. It also has complicated my swyping.

  • http://www.tedpavlic.com/ Ted Pavlic

I have the Rezound, and I was surprised that so many details (good and bad!) are left out about it.

For one, it acts as both a DLNA client and server. That means that I can stream directly to or from an XBMC server (or a Sony Media Player or a DLNA-compatible TV or…). That’s really neat. No extra cables or special dongles required (although you are free to get one if you like — the HDMI streaming works well).

One bad thing about it is that sometimes on 4G in certain parts of the country (Tempe/Phoenix, AZ, for me, but others have the problem in other places), the 4G network causes the HTC device to set the time zone back and forth apparently randomly. You’ll get 4G and then suddenly your time hops back and hour. A little later it might hop forward to the correct time, but it also might stay back an hour. This problem doesn’t show up on 3G. Apparently this problem has shown up on HTC 4G devices ever since the EVO. Verizon says that HTC knows about this problem and is working on a fix (I called them tonight and asked).

The worst problem with the Rezound are the boot loops. If setup for CDMA, at random times, the phone may kick its modem into a “WCDMA preferred” mode that disagrees with Verizon. Consequently, the phone reboots and boot loops until you take the back cover off. With the back cover off, you get enough time to set the phone back into 4G automatic mode which fixes the problem. I’ve asked HTC support about this problem (which you can google for to see that it is widespread), and they say they are aware of the problem but do not know yet what is causing it nor how widespread it is. They say they are working on a fix.

Moreover, even before people finally realized its bootloader could be unlocked, temp root was easy to obtain and let you freeze bloat (e.g., via Titanium Backup).

Anyway, Amazon Wireless is sending me a replacement Friday that hopefully isn’t so sensitive to the boot looping problem. After that, I look forward to fixes from HTC… because I really love the phone when it works. The camera is great (and fast), and the phone feels great in my hand. I’m a bigger fan of the curved dimple on the back of the phone than the G-Nex’s curved screen.

For those of you who were able to get $100 credit on a prior purchase of the Rezound…did you purchase it within the last 14 days and if not who specifically did you talk to.  I have called customer service 3 times and they are all strictly keeping to the 14 day price matching window.

  • David Hammitt

Got the Rezound 10 days ago (Love it by the way). Paid $299 for it. Called Verizon today and they credited my account the $100 difference.

  • BbyDol

Does anyone know if this only applies to online purchases or will they honor it in store?

  • Eupher15

I just got off the phone with a Verizon Wireless rep and he credited my next bill $100.00. I bought it on November 23 so it was a nice surprise. Can’t go wrong paying $149.00 for the Rezound.

    • BbyDol

Did you buy yours in store or online?  I bought mine in the store the day after having my gall bladder removed, but they won’t give a credit.

  • Tuff7474

Well Happy New Year to us. Just called and got my $100 too I freaking love this phone! Thanks peoples…

  • http://twitter.com/FunWithDrugs Edward

    oh

    • Stating El Obvious

      yeah, i know.

  • Jax187xx

For now I’m satisfied with my bionic and thunderbolt. Wish I would have waited a lil longer before buying the bionic..HTC phones have amazing screens, cameras and unlocked bootloaders! Never again will I buy a Motorola product.

  • Anonymous

Gotta wait until nite to jump someone, always safer

  • Monty Waggoner

I called Verizon and received a $100 credit. That really made my day. I was okay with $299, but this thing in AMAZING for $199.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=503332367 Adam Cox

even more amazing through amazon for 150 lol

      • Gdivecha

Any way this could work in India? Cause the unlocked still seems to be out of reach, price-wise? So, now the unlocked bootloader on our side, can I buy this, break the contract and use it here as a GSM device?
        Thanx!

        • Monty Waggoner

That’ll never work. Verizon is not at all compatible, even though they now have a sim card.

      • Monty Waggoner

Technically, I got it for $240 with my Wife’s 20% off corporate discount. They then credited my account $100 which makes it $140, plus tax. I think I came out okay.

  • Stating El Obvious

@Droidzilla:disqus You seem like you’re scrambling because I pointed out the flaw in your silly argument.  If you’re calling me out for having incorrect logic by assuming that “popularity denotes quality” one would assume that you think “popularity doesn’t denote quality”…correct?  So I ask, again.  Do you believe that the immensely popular Android, with all the marketshare, is poor quality?
You do realize that no matter how you answer that question, you will look like a moron, right?  ….right?

    • Stating El Obvious

*crickets*  What no quickie comeback, Droidzilla?  A+ for effort though…

      • EC8CH

He’s waiting for the i*hone 5 to come out so you’re arguments will be based at least partially in reality.

        “Whatever… we’ll get 4G someday too”

        • Stating El Obvious

You’ve gotta do better then that.  “Android is better because we have technology that is available to everyone!”

You and droidzilla sure have funny “logic”.

          • Stating El Obvious

The silence from droidzilla, it be defeaning.

  • Rick

Does it have s-off and perm root ?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=503332367 Adam Cox

not s-off but the bootloader is unlocked and one-click easy root makes perm root easy.

  • Guest

Seems like a good deal. Would consider trading my bionic for this if they can get the dropped calls worked out now they’ve unlocked the bootloader. Not a fan of the GNex really.

The only gripe I really have left about the Bionic (other than the damn bootloader) is the horrible camera. The HTC takes some nice pix. A good custom ROM on this phone would rock

  • J Dub

Hmm…with the Spectrum launching at $199 could VZW have came to their senses and dropped on contract 4G superphones to the right price point of $199?

  • Bionicman

that’s what i always thought of the rezound. a $150 to $199 phone. nothing more than that..

    • Djlowproz

arent the headphones that come with this phone with $100

      • EC8CH

depends on your definition of “worth”, which I’m assuming you spell “with”

        • Stating El Obvious

          Easy, principal…

      • Djlowproz

        worth*

      • http://www.tedpavlic.com/ Ted Pavlic

They retail for $99. You probably won’t get $99 if you try to resell them though.

  • Anonymous

They must have known the LG Spectrum pricing that would BBB

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=3406966 Philip Fillup

I bought mine last wednesday so I called them up after I saw this and got $100 back =]

    • Tuff7474

I bought mine last wednesday!!! What did you say to get your benjamin back?

  • gregwilliams

Wow!!! That’s a surprising move since anyone that got theirs after nov. 28th can just go get there 65 dollars (100-35 activation) before the 15th

    • Anonymous

Considering they dropped the price already I would assume that’s not going to affect too many people.

      • gregwilliams

touche! i see what you’re saying

    • Tuff7474

What do you tell them to get your money difference back?

      • gregwilliams

Tell them you would simply like the difference from the price adjustment, and if that doesn’t work tell them you’d like to return your phone and rebuy it.

        • Tuff7474

          Appreciate it…

          • gregwilliams

no problem,  looks like it already worked for Jake Gall in a post below

  • http://twitter.com/AranelAlasse Aranel Alasse

hm…  I might really consider this, now that the bootloader is unlockable.

Does anyone know of any apps (or ROMs) that improve the vibrate?  It’s too soft to be noticeable in my pocket….

    • Fuku

      That’s what she said

      • mindingutter

Just work on perfecting the tongue tornado.  The women love that.

  • http://twitter.com/billfordjr Bill Ford

I am really debating this. I want the Gnex but i dont have the full $300. If this has a unlocked bootloader and a dev backing, what are the reasons i would want the Gnex over this if I am just going to flash a custom rom anyway? I do want the Gnex because Project Elite will be supported, but for $100 less and a few specs that are better (camera), should I get this?

$169.99 with my last NE2 discount.

    • Bionic

Are you aware that you can charge half your phone purchase to your verizon account?  Thats what i do when i dont have all the cash right away

      • Guttatae22

I do that every time I upgrade

    • Anonymous

The GNex will go down at least $50 whenever the next ICS phone hits.  So depends on your level of patience.  But the bill to your account idea mentioned works great.

    • TC Infantino

The only things the G-Nex has over the Rezound are NFC chip and slightly bigger screen with no physical soft buttons.  Now that the Rezound has an unlockable bootloader, those are the only things the G-Nex has going for it.  The Rezound has a clearer screen (though you have to be looking very close to tell), better cameras, better build quality (IMO), better antenna or radios, more and removable/expandable storage.  And it comes with nice ear buds.

  • Mwapple

Been waiting for this, Im picking it up this week. $169.99 with my loyalty discount.

  • Anonymous

Think I’m going to drop my Gnex for this.  Rezound is faster and I use the camera too much to prefer the Gnex’s.  Plus I’ll net $100 back :).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Danny-Stone/100000426610498 Danny Stone

Im considering it after the dropped calls in full service areas and few other just things im not satisfied with. I’m kinda wishing for my Nexus 1 back…

      • Anonymous

Good moves gents! I started with the Rezound zound went to the Nexus and now I’m back to it! I had all the problems you guys mentioned with the Nexus…

    • TC Infantino

I think you will be happy with the Rezound.  I have had it for over a month and simply loving it.  It does take great pictures, there is a panorama mode in the scenes setting that works well.  It also does great video, has 16gb internal plus the included 16gb external sd card, music sounds great.  All the specs make it a great phone.

      • http://www.tedpavlic.com/ Ted Pavlic

Any problems with the boot looping? (google “rezound boot loop”)

Also, do you notice that sometimes WiFi has to be restarted to get networking back up and running? (and does it piss you off that there seems to be no way to prevent the phone from turning WiFi back on after turning it off, even when telling it not to prompt every time you open an app?)

Have you played with it as a DLNA client or server? It’s really handy.

  • Tboltuser

nite = now, Josh, are you using swype to do these updates?  : )

    • Bionic

      LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=503332367 Adam Cox

got mine for 150 on amazon two weeks back. with the unlocked bootloader now. running a ineffibles rom and ziggy’s kernel this thing FLIES!!! also great battery life (although i don’t have 4g in my immediate area yet). best purchase i’ve made tech wise in a LONG time.

  • Edwin M

All I know is I got mine on Black Friday through Wireless Advocates online for $50. Best purchase I made all Season long.

    • Anonymous

Why didn’t you get it for $0.01 via Amazon?

      • Edwin M

Because it was an upgrade and not a new activation. I wanted to keep my unlimited data ;-)

        • Anonymous

Worth the $49.99 extra to keep unlimited data for sure.

  • Chris

If i bought this phone November 30th at Best Buy and its under the Holiday return policy of until January 15th, can i try and get the difference back in a price match? I seriously doubt it, but I figured there’d be no harm in asking.

    • Jake Gall

I just got a 100 dollar credit for the device for the price difference, its called price protection. They will credit you just call before the cutoff date.

      • Chris

Did you call them or just go into the store? I want to call but my receipt is at home and I’m at work right now. I might have to just be patient and bring it in tomorrow.

    • http://twitter.com/darkzero7 Anthony

Yes. Technically speaking they should honor the new VZW price and refund you the difference.

  • Anonymous

Now they just need to drop the Galaxy Nexus price to $200.  My wife said I had to wait until after our refi at the end of the month to get it.

  • Anonymous

i am surprised at this…unless the ultimae htc verizon phone is getting announced at ces i dont see why they would drop the price that much…maybe $249 but not $199

  • Djlowproz

hmmm im about to upgrade today this or the g-nex

    • Nnutthowz3

Could have got the GNex for 189 on newegg last week…

      • Djlowproz

        really damn

    • Anonymous

Get the G-Nex.  It’s much sexier than the Rezound and there’s an automated unlock and root tool out now.

      Plus, ICS is amazing!

      • Djlowproz

I just did order mines today

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Danny-Stone/100000426610498 Danny Stone

Hope you have better luck then me. Dropping calls constantly with full service. Places where my TB never did. Just exchanged it today for another one to see if it was just a bad one.

        • Anonymous

That sucks.  I’ve had no issues.  Great call quality and signal strength as well as battery life.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Danny-Stone/100000426610498 Danny Stone

The new one seems to be better. Only one dropped call so far. Makes no sense. On my couch full 4g just gone…..but my TB never dropped one dang call

      • Anonymous

Everything you stated the rezound will get soon anyways. With the LTE integrated into the SOC for better battery, better radios, better camera, microSD slot, and better GPU I don’t honestly see the Gnex being better if at all. Now with the price drop definitely springng for the rezound.

        • Anonymous

“Everything you stated the rezound will get soon anyways.”

What date?  My advice is don’t hold your breath regardless of what you hear.

The only legitimate advantage I agree with is the camera.  The camera on the G-Nex kind of sucks, but I don’t take many pics anyway.  I thought the lack of a microSD slot would be a problem, but it really isn’t.  It hasn’t affected my user experience one bit.  Battery life, signal strength, call quality, etc. have all been great for me.  Everyone has their own preferences though.  If you like the Rezound, go for it.  For me, the G-Nex is the most amazing device I’ve ever laid my hands on.

    • http://twitter.com/shehippie CrazyOldBroad

If you take a lot of pictures get the Rezound. The camera blows the one on the galaxy nexus out of the water!

  • Anonymous

If the Galaxy Nexus wouldn’t have come out when it did, I probably would have gotten the Rezound.

    • EC8CH

it would have been tempting, but I think I would have held onto the OG a few months longer and waited for the next round. My OG is in pretty good shape though.

      • J Dub

Agreed. After all the 4G issues VZW has been having I can wait. My OG is getting very long in the tooth, but is still very capable. Kinda hoping it holds on until the next-gen LTE radios hit phones. The battery suck on 4G right now does seem to be a downer.

        • Anonymous

Same here. Still trucking along with my OG and all the issues you guys have raised is the reason why I haven’t pulled the trigger. The Rezound sure looks good though…

  • T4rd

It’s about EOL time, lol =p.

  • Anonymous

that’s a really great phone, odd. well this means hope for me getting a cheaper nexus in a month.

    • Stating El Obvious

How is this odd?  Every android phone becomes worthless a month or two after release.  Not sure why people are always surprised by price drops…make way for the quad cores!

      • Sirx

This.  How many times has this happened now for anyone to be surprised?  The only upside to having a glut of android phones where all vie for Iphone-like attention and NONE get it (because of that glut) is that prices drop only a month or two after release.

        • EC8CH

Exactly… it should surprise no one. Almost every type of consumer electronic device has a similar price history over it’s product cycle.  Only *pple rips off it’s customers by charging full release date price up until the day an upgrade is released.

          • Stating El Obvious

So stupid….if people are buying it, why would they drop the price?  “Our product just sold 4 million units on Christmas day, I think a price drop is in order!”

We’ve learned two things.  Engineers can’t spell, and would also make horrible business owners.

          • EC8CH

“by charging full release date price up until the day an upgrade is released.”

did *pple just release the i*hone 5 the day after Christmas?

Of coarse the price drops happen faster for devices with slower sales (Rezound), but they all eventually drop as the release of next year’s “improved” models nears.

I prefer to have the ability to take advantage of some savings and pick up a device that has been discounted simply because next year’s model will soon be available.

          • Stating El Obvious

I dont think you get it.  If the Rezound had amazing sales until the day the next model dropped, you better believe the price is not going to drop.  It’s not one or the other, it’s both together.  If you have slow sales, the price is going to drop far before a new model drops, to get rid of unused space taking inventory.  If you have a product that sells the same amount of units until the day of the new model drop, why wouldn’t you want to maximize your profit?  Contrary to how some of you people think, Verizon is not doing its customers a favor by dropping prices or rewarding them, they’re doing it because they have no choice.

          • EC8CH

Contrary to what you apparently think, i*hone sales slow greatly prior to the launch of new models.  They’ve said so themselves in their earnings calls.  It’s just such a restricted system they can keep the price at launch day prices until after the new release.

Have fun with that.  I’m happy for anyone who’s picking up a discounted Rezound. Great phone at a good price.  Just another advantage to Android in my mind, but I’m sure you’d beg to differ.

          • Stating El Obvious

Guess it depends on your definition of “advantage”…of course it’s advantageous to the user who gets cheap phones.  Not advantageous to the company who has to sell those crappy phones at highly discounted prices 2 months after their release.  Thankfully, as I already mentioned you’re not a business owner, so it doesn’t affect you.

          • EC8CH

Yep, I just buy phones so I like saving money… have fun justifying why you’re better off paying more for less.

          • Stating El Obvious

Define “less”?  As an “engineer” you really believe that stuffing specs into a phone somehow makes it better?  Clown college doesn’t give you an engineering degree, bro.

          • EC8CH

Here’s a pretty simple example even you should be able to follow:

            3G is 1 less G than 4G.

          • Stating El Obvious

Here’s a pretty simple example that you should be able to follow but apparently haven’t:

4G is not something that can only be available to Android phones.  When the 4G iPhone comes out, what will you sheep point to next?  Moronic statements like yours make all Android users look like morons.

          • EC8CH

Oh I thought we were talking about phones that were actually released.  Then sure, yeah eventually the i*hone will get all the good stuff we’ve been enjoying for a year or so now: 4G, bigger screens, etc. Have fun waiting for that i*hone 5.

          • Anonymous

Here’s a pretty simple for you fandroids to follow……you’ve been duped into thinking your phony “4G” is real:

            http://techwithric.com/4g-speeds-and-why-no-one-has-them

          • Stating El Obvious

btw, do let me know if/when you ever start your own business…i wanna be there as you declare bankruptcy when you heavily discount your most successful products lol

          • Anonymous

“A fool and his money are soon parted,” right?

          • EC8CH

            *pple should patent that

          • Stating El Obvious

Yes, the 35million fools who buy an iPhone this quarter, will undoubtedly be beyond depressed.  The “they’re all fools” theory starts taking on water, when it happens quarter after quarter.  However, of course, this is all that fandroids can latch onto to explain Apple’s success…

          • EC8CH

either that, or we can just look at Android take over of the smartphone market share and laugh at *pple trolls who act like that’s not important as *pple marketshare stay flat quarter after quarter.

          • Stating El Obvious

If by flat you mean rising as it competes in marketshare with 300 devices, yes we can look at that.  Only a fool would try to say that selling 34 million units in one quarter is something to “laugh at”…but then again, you are a fool as has been established countless times before.

          • EC8CH

I know, it’s not fair right?

We should only compare the i*hone to one android phone at a time.  That way it won’t look like Android’s growth is far exceeding *pple’s.

          • Stating El Obvious

Or…we shouldn’t compare the actual OS’s right?  That way it won’t look like Android’s “marketshare” is laughable.

          • Anonymous

Try this on for size fandroids:

“iPhone breathing down the neck of Android in the U.S.”

            http://gigaom.com/2012/01/09/iphone-breathing-down-the-neck-of-android-in-u-s/

            Ha ha….

          • Anonymous

I’m glad that you think popularity denotes a quality product. Since that’s how you feel, here’s a non-exhaustive list of things you think are awesome:
            -Windows OS
            -Justin Beiber
-The movie Titanic (you totally cried)
            -Jersey Shore
-A $300 iPhone the day before the new model releases
            -Rebecca Black
            -Ford
-Twilight (you are so Team Edward)

Trolling with logic works better. Seriously, I need to stop giving you pointers.

          • Stating El Obvious

You left something off your list:  Android.

By your “logic”, Android is immensely popular, but that doesn’t denote quality, right?  So in other words, people are just buying the crap because it’s available en masse everywhere you go for free, cheap, or BOGO, right?  Or will you do some more spin?

Sad that you sheep don’t realize that the things you say apply to yourselves…

          • Anonymous

Nope, that’s not my logic; it’s yours. And, by your logic, Android is the best mobile OS out there.

My logic is more, well . . . logical.

          • Anonymous

            Droidzilla you’ve been owned……lol

          • Stating El Obvious

Yes I would tend to agree with your assessment.

  • mons

Kind of sad – seems like a better phone than the Razr, but people went with the Razr because zomg thin.

    • Sporttster

Nah, I went with the Razr because I liked it more at the time. But what’s really bugging me now is that HTC has a unlocked BL and MOTO are being idiots about unlocking theirs. I’ve still got a couple days left before my return option is done. I’m seriously considering jumping to this at this price point and dropping my locked Razr. Hate sitting here watching every other phone under the sun get some developer love while the Razr sits in the balcony alone. Ticks me off!!!

      • Anonymous

why not just get the GNex then. The community is already running rampant with this phone.

I actually like the RAZR’s build quality and screen over the Rezound. I went back and forth between the two for Amazon’s $0.01 deal, and I haven’t had a single regret for the RAZR yet. We’ll see if that holds, though, since I don’t know that I trust Moto to unlock the bootloader (well, to decrypt the bootloader signature) with the ICS update. Still, I haven’t had a single reason to even root at this point; and I was a flashaholic on the OG!

You liked the screen better?  The wife and I went into the Verizon store expecting to walk out with Razrs.  We walked out with Rezounds and it wasn’t even close.

Absolutely. sAMOLED > SLCD, in my opinion. I love the blacks and colours on sAMOLED screens. The Rezound had slightly better text rendering if you were looking from 2″ away, but for real-world features like brightness and contrast, the RAZR was superior.

Different strokes for different folks; the beauty of Android!
