HTC Rezound and DROID RAZR: Quick Hands-on and Unboxing (Updated: With Video)

droid razr and rezound

Two of the most anticipated Android devices in recent history showed up on my doorstep today – the HTC Rezound in all of its Beats glory and the DROID RAZR looking as thin and cutting edge as ever. The RAZR I had a chance to get down and dirty with a couple of weeks ago in NYC, but the Rezound was still new to my hands (not Dan’s though). As two of the most impressive (at least on paper) phones to come to Verizon’s 4G LTE network, we have been dying to get some real intimate time with them. That time is now.

For today, we just have a quick unboxing video for each, a simple gallery, and some initial thoughts. Our full reviews will likely be out some time next week, as we always try as hard as we can to avoid those 24-hour, quick hitting, blog overviews. We like to become one with a device, get to know it deeply, and then provide feedback to hopefully help you make your next 2-year decision.

HTC Rezound

After popping the Rezound out of the box, you know right away that this is an HTC device. It’s buttery smooth, feels excellent in hand, and is made with nothing but the finest materials. It has a little bit of weight to it, but almost any phone feels slightly heavy these days when you pair it up against the RAZR. The 4.3″ HD Super LCD screen looks incredible. I sat for a few minutes comparing it to the RAZR’s Super AMOLED Advanced at full brightness, and prefer it so far. I have not had a chance to dive into Beats or other software at this time, but will do so over the next few days. Overall, I’m loving the build and am anxious to make this my sidekick for bit. Let’s see how much pressure we can put on that tiny 1620mAh battery.

DROID RAZR

You sort of know my feelings on this phone if you read my hands-on reports, but I’ll say again that I really like what Motorola has done here. This phone is light as a feather, unbelievably thin, and as powerful as any phone on the market. The screen may not match the HD resolution on the Rezound or Galaxy Nexus, but it’s at least a step up over their previous offerings, the Bionic and DROID 3. I pulled up the camera briefly in the video you’ll see and came out blown away by the speed. Picture quality is still to be determined, but this phone can snap quick pics with the best of them. Also anxious to make this a pocket pal for the next few days to help you guys make that final decision when the Galaxy Nexus arrives.

The nexus will be plastic, weak radios and bad call quality and gps.

    • Anonymous

I’m glad you can tell the future, despite all testers of the Nexus saying otherwise.  You’re the dumbest person on this entire site.

      • Anonymous

Samsung has proven that time and time again lol. You know it and everyone else knows it too. You are the dumbest person in here if you feel Samsung can compete with Moto.

        • Anonymous

And you have proven time & time again that you are the “RICHARD YARRELL” of DROID LIFE (people that visit other android sites like “ACentral” & Android&Me” will unfortunately know who I am speaking of)

and razr will be a locked down bootloader with software bugs, lag and slow updates, typical moto. but anyway those faults could be improved with the galaxy nexus, but you wouldnt possibly know shit about this phone anyway.

      • Anonymous

It will also has the best radios and call quality, typical moto :)

sorry, HTC has the best Radios. Motorla=UGLY

the nexus is way thick and ugly period.

    • Anonymous

nexus is only like 1mm thicker then a razr you fool, its not anything nearly close to thick. its actually a nice looking device and unlike the razr its not covered from front to back with moto and verizons ugly logos. the front is pure glass, no ugly buttons or logos to ruin that look.

      • Anonymous

This is not correct, no one knows how much thicker the G-Nex is

        • Anonymous

i looked it up razor is 7.1mm and nexus is 8.94mm so about 1.75mm, almost 2mm difference.

          • Evan Knofsky

That width isn’t for the LTE version. The width of the LTE version has not been announced.

          • Anonymous

Yeah, what Evan said… a company that knows how thick the device is and how long the battery lasts but wont announce it kinda raises some questions…

      • Anonymous

The razor looks better than the nexus. It has better technology in it too.

God that shitty jittery lag when pinching and zooming on the RAZR/Blur’s gallery is pathetic. That describes Blur perfectly.. complete lack of polish.

At least with Sense you get some polish with your bloat.

    • Anonymous

what about the choppiness in the lock screen i have noticed on all motorola phones? i always hated that.

    • Anonymous

Moto’s gallery is pretty bad but that’s why there’s much better alternative options in the market.

  • Dylan Blom

really random question but what kind of camera are you using to take pictures of the phone and recorder the videos

  • Anonymous

My Rezound should be waiting for me when I go into work tomorrow. =) I’m on the fence with the Razr. I want to get it, but I’m thinking of holding off for the Galaxy Nexus if only for the buttery smooth ride that Android 4.0 will be. Gee, life sure is tough.

When doing the reviews on the rezound, razr, gnex can you test GPS lock, connectivity, call quality and data loss? Thanks in advance.

  • Str8RippinEm

F’in love the RAZR, most likely gonna get it and hopefully the Nexus comes out for a test drive before my 14 days are up…I have one concern though and let me know if it is a valid one. You know how batteries get shittier and shittier the more you use your phone? well, thats the only thing making me question this phone.  My OG lasted this long cause I bought a new battery when the last one wouldnt even hold a charge. What happens when this battery starts to crap out from having to use it while on the charger cause you cant swap. I want a phone thats gonna last me 2 years like the OG so i could make a significant upgrade in the future. Not be stuck with a sick phone that last 2 hours a year from now.

    • Fleshgod

When the battery craps out on you in a year from now you will be forced to buy the Droid razr 6 or DROID 11, stick with a removable battery and get yourself the nexus.

  • razrftw

RAZR is Bluetooth 4.0 not 2.0 guy

  • hatethanet

Thanks for doing the size comparison. I knew the RAZR was wider, but I didn’t know it was longer than the Rezound as well. According to the G-Nex specs, it will be right in between the RAZR and Rezound in width, but be longest of the three phones.

  • Anonymous

I want to see a threesome with the G-Nex. Wish they would release all 3 on the same day.

  • http://www.spotlesscash.blogspot.com Majaga2001

    THIS IS PURE GENIUS

  • Tom

Can you take non “artistic” photos please? I’d like clear and focused photos (ie. none of those focus on a corner and let the rest of the phone be blurry).

    • Jorge

I would like this too. I think the review will be much better without out of focus and angled photos. For example, when comparing the two phones, it would be much more useful to take a direct shot perpendicular to the phones. Also the same when looking at the phones from the side.

      • Anonymous

They’re trying to make the Razr’s awful angular design not look as ugly=P

    • Bryan Williams

It’s the lens they’re using.  They need to turn the f/stop up to get a larger depth of field.

      • Marco

Or just take head on shots. I always find it annoying when reviewers think they’re writing for a photography blog instead of a tech site. Taking a pic of the phone from the corner doesn’t help the reader at all.

  • Anonymous

Since the extended battery is pretty much mandatory (Verizon should throw those in for free) lets see some pictures with the bigger battery on the Rezound.

Not everyone is in a 4G area so when you test the battery can you do a strictly 3G test? And does anyone know if either can switch 4G off if you don’t want to use it?

    • Evan Knofsky

4G can be turned off via the settings menu.

  • Glpd46

Ok how do you do a battery pull on the razr? I’m on my 3rd android and haven’t seen one yet that doesn’t need the occasional battery pull.

    • Anonymous

You hold volume up and the power button for a hard reset.

  • http://profiles.google.com/davidukfl David Wanless

I got to play with the razr tonight a little. My friend works for a verizon store and they got one in today.
The razr is pretty damn solid, and feels great. Also the above review isn’t joking about the camera. I took a few test photos with it and there is near zero shutter lag. I was snapping photos one right after the other. Also android flies on this thing. I just started opening and closing apps for the hell of it and the razr didn’t skip a beat. I can’t wait to check out the galaxy nexus, cos right now the Razr is at the top of my want to buy list.

Just a FYI. If HTC is following anything like the TBOLT, it looks like it is inductive, but for another reason. The connectors at the bottom and top of the case are the Antennas. Which i personally hate. However, the 5 pins next to the SD Card are VERY simular to the ones on the thunderbolt, and there is way more metal in that then was in the tbolt and happens to match with those pins. Hmm… Uh on a unrelated note, would be nice if the GNEX was built in…

  • Matthew Morrison

hahaha! The way you said bloatware in the video

  • PowersUSA

My local Verizon store has a the RAZR on display. It felt very nice in the hand. Solid, yet light but not plastic toy light. It feels premium. The overall width is just a smig too much.

The screen however was underwhelming. The pixels where easily distinguishable. No one color jumped outs as awful like solid green areas on the Bionic with a checkerboard pattern but I would say the overall pixelization was more evident on the RAZR. The screen on my OG X is looks smoother.

Give me a phone running ICS that has the build quality and form factor of a slightly less wide RAZR with the screen and camera of the Rezound and I would be one happy camper.
