DROIDX Update to 4.5.605 is on the Way, the Keyboard Bug is Finally Getting Fixed

The original DROIDX Gingerbread update brought with it a massive list of bugs that were eventually fixed – well, except one.  The keyboard remained a problem even after a couple of updates were pushed out by Moto and Verizon.  That bug will go away though, over the next couple of weeks when the latest 113MB fixer is made available.  Not sure why a keyboard fix takes 113MB (maybe to fix the current root method?), but that’s what we have here.

More details.

Update:  Some folks over at RootzWiki pulled this .605 file a couple of days ago.  There has been some discussion around the phone actually being more buggy after loading it.

Update 2:  Hearing now that the update will start to roll out on the 19th.

Cheers Legion!

I have Motorola Droid X2 and it randomly restarts itself, OFTEN! Also my camera and video are blurry and choppy. Honestly it’s the worst I have had. And when I turn it to vibrate it won’t vibrate it’ll just have a little green light blink. And the keyboard (on screen) will never switch to horizontal on text or internet or app store. I use to have the Droid X but it did the same so they sent me a Droid X2 and still same problems!

  • Shauna Md10

My phone updated last might and im hating it its probably gonna take me ten min to type this commemt, but it use to vibrate when I would type n it doesnt happen anymore. My spacebar is to the right and I hate it. I sont have prediction anymore which came in handy.this update sucks ass..

  • Jasontricci

Reboot after proper shutdown has become common for my DroidX  4.5.605 (This is a WIDELY reported bug among the Droid community) Battery life has declined considerably, even with regular cache cleanings, app killings, and system upkeeps. Keyboard is still laggy and glitchy. Overall unsatisfied with Motorolla. PLEASE put a little more effort into your OS/updates!

  • dizzle

the newest update that came to my phone sucks!!!!!!

    • Narasw

      y does it suck

  • out of the box

I have had my Driod X for about 6 months.  It is the first smart phone and after playing with it for about a week I really loved this phone.  Maybe I have been lucky, but I haven’t had any problems with the phone.  My only complaint comes after the Gingerbread update.  This phone is my lifeline–family info, business contacts, businesses I frequent, etc.  So I broke them down into folders to make it easy to find who/what I needed.  They totally hosed up the contact folders.  You can’t add new contacts to existing folders.  When you tap on a folder to change to a different one it takes you to the last folder you were in.  So you have to go back to the main list a try again.  The FM app changed — can’t save favorites anymore, doesn’t tune in a well as it did before.  I’m hopping the new update will fix these few annoying problems.

  • Nashdmills

Droid X sucks…..I hate this phone!! Updates are continually causing issues and the phone to “lock up”.

    • Deank4

ive had droid x since came out and it works awesome not the phone if your having probs its apps and software youve download to it not working right and causing it to lag and freeze and lock up .i can do almost everything the brand new phone can with my x .

  • Smrlib1

ddroid x here. Random reboot also after Latest update 4.?.?

  • Jjmarsh

My phone has not worked well since the update…it hangs and locks up. Sometimes I can’t even open my gallary. My battery life has diminished considerably. Please send an update to fix asap!!

  • Isis_tx22

How do you get your phone to stop rebooting? Everytime I go to play music on my phone it shuts down. This started after that new updated. Its very annoying.

  • Gniddie

this update has made my phone completely useless. Answering calls, taking photos, playing music no longer functional. Even typing this message has become challenging

  • Momjkj

I have loved my droid x for the last 11 months.  Minor technical issues, but nothing worth complaining about.  The forced upgrade to 4.5.605 that occurred a few days ago has made me hate my droid x and now I can’t wait until my contract is up.  The keyboard function is buggy, it puts random words in the middle of a sentence now!! I have to really proofread everything that I send, and it is not easy to edit either.  The weird arrow gets in the way.  Also, it will frequently force close the browser, which had never happened before the “upgrade”.  I don’t mind minor bugs, it’s par for the course with technology. But these are pretty major bugs and they have made this once great phone an absolute pain.

  • db

after upgrading.  when powered off, a new message will turn the unit back on.  i prefer to have it totally off at night.

  • Balthas

Since the update all mine does is freeze. I have to remove the battery to even get it to reboot. Then once it’s back up 5 minutes later it’s back to fully frozen. This is getting old and honestly i’m about done with both android and Verizon since they are throttling their 3G service for those of us still on unlimited data.

  • Cafe_guzzi

I simply love this phone (droidx) however, with the new upgrade- which i didnt need, thank you- the function keys stay lit when in the docking station. Whats up with that?

  • Mkeefer

Has anyone had problems after the upgrade when typing in a new text…if you hit the space bar multiple times quiclly…it pastes text from your previous text message. Any help?

  • Olle

Just updated it.. and my toolbar on home screen changed color, signal strength and wireless is now blue and all I can say is ooh wee what up with that

  • Beadit42

I hate my Droidx and also want to throw it out the window. It doesn’t send my yahoo email notifications to me and I have to reboot several times to get it t refresh. Anyone else having this problem?

  • Bjpasco

How about fixing the camera, which worked wonderfully before previous updgrade.  Now it is very slow and choppy

  • ubo

Oh man I loaded my droid up with tons of custom software and things like custom screens and now I’m going to rage in comments that my droid is unstable and blame the software developers.  I know how software works even though I apparently can barely operate a phone properly.

  • Kimberlyfar

Finally I can stop using my Voice Command to text!…so embarrassing in public when I’m yelling in a robot voice to my phone just to reply to a text! (In robot voice) “Ha Ha that is cool, exclamation point”

  • I agree my droid x randomly reboots as well…

  • Ky41083

I’m betting that all the people experiencing issues with this new update are the one’s applying the full 113mb update file to a phone already running 4.5.602 as this is not the correct upgrade path. To upgrade from 4.5.602 you should ONLY be applying the smallest version of the OTA (I hear 8mb, didn’t check mine). If you have root and want it back just install the OTA, let it boot, then reboot which should automatically bring up ClockworkMod Recovery, and install the latest superuser zip from your SD card. Sounds like applying the full 113mb update file to a system already running 4.5.602 is breaking / messing up stuff. If you have already done this and your phone is not working correctly I would suggest SBF back to 602, restore your latest .602 backup and take the OTA to .605 with the method I have already described.

  • Jogfdkjkld

What exactly was the problem with they keyboard? I don’t remember it being an issue…

  • gadgetgirl

Am I the only one that hasn’t gotten the update yet? I keep trying to update it and it says it has the current update but I have the 4.5.602 still. 🙁

    • cbake88

It keeps saying the same for me.  I’m still on 4.5.602 as well.

    • mustardhomie

      me too.

  • JimDroidX

I have the Droid X (1st Version) and I am currently running Gingerbread 2.3.3 on it.  The software has alot of issues & problems but to all you that are condemning Motorola…….don’t  Moto just makes the hardware (phone), its the techs at Google that write the Android Operating System & its updates that need to be fired!!!  I have had Motorola, LG, Samsung, & Kyocera phones in my life and FAR & AWAY……..my Motorola phones have been the BEST phones I have ever owned!!!

One thing I have found is how amazingly slow my browser is now that I have gingerbread on the phone!!  These guys NEED to incorporate an option that allows you to ONLY manually download & install updates!!  This bs about updates being automatically downloaded & you have to install them is crap.  I NEVER asked my phone to download the newest OS for my phone but it just went ahead & did it anyway!!  They also need to show you where the OS have been downloaded to so if the phone automatically downloads a new OS & you don’t want it yet, then you can go in & manually delete the downloaded file.  I recently bought a gently used Droid X from a friend & it does NOT have Gingerbread installed on it…..HOWEVER…..it was downloaded.  I always choose to install later but I am getting really tired of clicking that.  Would LOVE to just go in & delete the file so it can’t ask me that aymore!!!  The Droid OS 2.2.1 I have on that phone works just fine SO want to keep it that way!!

As for the keyboard issues…….I found an super easy fix for it.  Just go to settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Then select the ‘ALL’ tab on the top of the page > scroll down to you see multi-touch keyboard > click on that and push the clear cache button & clear data buttons!!  I read online that the keyboard stores data in the cache and it causes the keyboard to go away or not work properly.  After I did this, my multi-touch keyboard has worked perfectly ever since!!

  • ty5731

the only problem i seem to have with my Droid X is where the Multi-touch Keyboard freezes up when i try to punctuate…it better fix this, or i am officially done with Motorola phones. and not create yet another bug.

  • My Droid X sucks so bad every time i puctuate it freezes the phone. Then Verizon tells me it’s not a known issue and make me Master Reset this piece of shit. Hammer time….

  • I needed to put you one bit of note to be able to thank you the moment again for these pleasant guidelines you’ve provided on this site. It has been quite unbelievably generous of people like you to deliver extensively what exactly a lot of people would have sold for an electronic book to get some money for themselves, even more so seeing that you might well have tried it if you ever decided. These thoughts as well served like a easy way to be sure that other people online have similar passion similar to my very own to learn much more on the subject of this condition. I believe there are some more fun instances ahead for individuals that looked over your website.

  • I don’t understand…I seen this and knowing I haven’t updated my phone since the last major update months ago, I checked for a new update with it stating I’m up to date. I then checked my software version and I am already running the 4.5.605.MB810 and I haven’t updated it yet. Am I missing something?

  • Balls

my droid x .603 deodexed / debloat / undervolt runs amazing why cant it do all of that out of the box?
..actually i dont want it to ruin all the fun

  • Anonymous

The camera app still reverts back to 6MP widescreen. Huge bug imo, and I haven’t had any problems with the keyboard honestly.

  • Jason Purp

I remember when I used stock ROMs. It pains me to recall the times.

  • Motorola can’t be trusted..they have ruined their own device. I’ve quit using my DroidX because it’s riddled with bugs and I’m not buying anymore of their phones.

  • Jaredp3001

I reflashed my phone twice thinking that maybe the keyboard thing was a wonky install. I do like the X, but their software developers are pure idiots. Let’s not forget the whole “let’s just not call it motoblur anymore and hope people think it’s different software” ordeal.

  • I together with my pals were found to be digesting the excellent suggestions found on your web page and so then I got a horrible feeling I had not expressed respect to the site owner for those tips. All the guys came for that reason warmed to see all of them and have in effect seriously been having fun with them. Thank you for being indeed considerate and then for picking out such good resources most people are really desirous to discover. My personal sincere regret for not saying thanks to sooner.

  • Hogasswildmc

Where is the fix for activesync? I can’t get my work email any more. Some people might think that is a benefit, but not if putting food on your plate is important.

  • Welcomematt78

That’s interesting that .605 isn’t released yet. I recently bricked my phone trying to flash .605 via TBH and decided to use my insurence cause my girlfriends truck accidently ran my DX over…….whoops! The “new” phone that I was given already had .605 installed.

    • Ed

you are a dick and should be reported to verizon for fraud! You broke it – you fix it.  Thats why carriers are locking everything.

    • -Ö¿Ö-

That’s funny, I have the TBH app and I don’t see .605 anywhere in it and this is 4 days after your lame posting.

    • naddame

You “BRICKED” your phone flashing an update that wasn’t out yet?  You don’t know what your doing if you couldn’t figure out how to “UN” brick your (almost impossible to brick) phone.

  • I intended to send you one very little observation to finally thank you so much over again with your stunning strategies you’ve shown in this article. It’s simply strangely open-handed of people like you to deliver publicly what many people could have distributed for an e-book to help make some profit for their own end, primarily considering that you could have done it in the event you desired. The principles likewise worked to be the great way to be aware that most people have the identical passion much like mine to know whole lot more when it comes to this condition. I know there are some more pleasurable occasions ahead for individuals that go through your site.

  • 11knives

DX / GB root running Liberty 9 with Blur removed… No need for this crappy downgrade, but thanks anyway!

  • Anonymous

People use the regular keyboard and not swype?  What’s wrong with you people?

  • I enjoy you because of all your work on this site. My aunt enjoys getting into internet research and it is obvious why. A lot of people learn all concerning the powerful form you convey advantageous tactics via your web blog and as well recommend contribution from others on this subject and our favorite child has always been discovering a lot. Take pleasure in the rest of the new year. You are always conducting a pretty cool job.

  • I only wish they would fix the issue with the camera forgetting the setting when you change it away from widescreen…

  • Granted

Dammit, Gingerbread literally crippled my phone to where I had to do a factory reset. I sure hope this new update doesn’t piss of my X.

  • Robert White

113 mb for a keyboard fix? Oh you can bet there is a root patch in there somewhere.

  • Booboolala2000

The keyboard problem is a joke. Pretty sure its blur. No other handset does it. And my Xoom is perfectly fine.

  • How the hell do they keep messing this crap up? If you can’t program software for your hardware, then don’t. Go stock.

    So glad I’m on Cyanogenmod.

    • WAldenIV

Moto should hire Fede to handle their software division.

      • Billyrouth2000

Right, then there would be fc and homescreen withdraw gallor

        • WAldenIV

LPP is fine on Froyo and it’s faster and smoother than Blur.  He just hasn’t completed the updated and optimized for GB yet.

  • patching blur is like putting a band aid on a broken bone (fail)

  • Brenda

I bought my Droid X with 2.2 installed (not OTA), rooted and disabled any and all updates. No
need to fix something when it’s not broken.

  • Chase Payne

When I had the X, when texting it would lag out and everytime I pushed the spacebar, no matter which texting app I used, it would cause my keyboard to minimize. I wouls have to do a factory reset to be able to text correctly again. This would be my guess on the issue.

    • shells_guy

I thought it was only me with the keyboard and reset problem. But even though I factory reset it did it again like 4days later. I’m sois sick of this and I can’t upgrade until next yr. I want the Bionic but can’t deal with the issues that that phone brings. The lame battery issue needs to get fixed and I mean better than 50%.

  • F350bear

I hope they fix the mobil hotspot. It’s terrible! Works for a few minutes then stops. I notice the 3G turns white or just disappears. If I turn the phone to landscape it starts working again. I’ve had proboems with it since I got the phone in December, gave up calling VZW about it. It was always the same thing, turn off… take the battery out, ok that should do it. WRONG! Even had me do a reset, still have the problems with it. I never have problems with 3g except when I’m using the hotspot.
Since the update a few weeks ago, my phone is rebooting atleast once a day, camera lags when I take a picture, before that it was fine.

  • Tdregjunk

Forget this – no problem with my keyboard.  Just rooted so don’t want.

  • I sbf back to froyo yesterday then updated to this gingerbread .605 and my x is buggy I’m bout to sbf back

  • Anonymous

whoever at motorola is in charge of the software updates needs to quit their job. I have a droid 2 and ever since the day I updated it to gingerbread it randomly reboots itself every single day. I swear im ready to take a sledge hammer to this phone. thank god I have an upgrade. now to wait for a phone actually worthy of upgrading to. never buying another motorola phone.

    • ehhh

Its sad.  If it wasnt for the awesome rom community, I’d probably have an i*hone.   I hate recommending my phone to others when I know they wont be putting roms on it.  I usually tell them, “if you’re gonna keep your moto phone stock you’re probably better off looking elsewhere.”

    • agree.. Heyy Guys, I just got a $829.99 iPåd2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.
      I use http://bitly.com/BiiDsFirst

    • Kimberlyfar

I wish I could like this post twice!

    • Backspacemaster

My droid x is still 2.2.1 glad I read this, google bought moto mobile so the premiere devices will be logo better get over the not loving moto because the future of moto and google is set in stone. Unless they just phase them out…

    • Isis_tx22

I have had motorola for years. This is the first time I’ve ever had an issue that as not quickly solved. And it’s about to try my patience.

    • Narasw

mine does that tooo its annoying

  • hoodlum47

Hey wait a minute, the instructions on VZW’s site posts images of it still being 8MB in size, I guess they meant it goes up to 113MB.

  • Anonymous

My Droid X restarts several times a day. I wish they would fix that….

    • Anonymous

my droid 2 does the same. I hate motorola.

    • Bunie

      my Droidx does as well.

      • Anonymous

GB fixed my rebooting issues I was having with my DX.

    • Ozzzy3z

If you have Lookout Mobile Security installed, try uninstalling it and see if your phone runs better.  It worked wonders for my X.

      • Sowthsydgruevn713

Damn really!? It worked that much better w/out it?

        • Peterjamesbenson

actually no antivirus is recomended nor needed!

    • I’ve had my DROID X for over two months and has never rebooted.  I have fat fingers and usually have to backspace quite a few times during a reply to an email.  I have sent several emails after I have upgraded to 4.5.605 and there were a lot fewer mistakes in typing.  It seems to be more forgiving to my finger placement.

    • Phil

My Droid X has worked perfectly since the day I got it, runs for 2 days on a single charge and never restarts itself.  Perhaps you should improve your expectations a little and reality follow…?

      • guest

Just fyi, two Droid X’s can operate completely differently from one another.  I got two at the same time, and one of them worked great from the start, the other couldn’t hold a charge for more than a few hours.  Finally took the one back, and was given a replacement.  It holds charge a bit better, but still not as good as the other original.  If yours runs perfectly and holds a charge that long, consider yourself blessed!  🙂

    • Do you have alot of Apps loaded? (and perhaps running in the background..) My phone was doing the same with the reboots sometimes being quite lengthy to complete (10+ minutes at times). Since my Gingerbread update the problem happens less often (I also removed what I didn’t really use)… Also, you can try a memory management program like “Memory Booster”. It has some great features like display of Used/Free/Total memory (so you can get an idea of memory usage), a Task Killer, “Quick boost” (to free memory with a click) and a userdefined “Auto Boost” feature that will allow you to choose when to free memory in the background automatically when free memory gets down to a certain level. It’s available in the Android Market in a Free “Lite” version & a paid “Ad Free” version ($2.99). I’d say try the free version to see if it helps & you like it first… Good Luck ;^)

      • I also noticed my reboots happening when I had apps with updates waiting. You might want to try disabling Auto update on installed apps…

  • hoodlum47

Okay. I’m the guy from Rootzwiki that pulled .605 from the update servers BUT this is probably different than what I got because what I pulled was 8MB in size while this is 113MB in size. So its either a different stable build (for once) or a rework of /system to patch the latest root exploit.

    • John

Knowing them, it’s prob a patch. Not sure why they care as we’ll prob never see another full OS update

Dont use the stock keeboard anyway. I am using SWIFT KEY X and FLEX T9 on my X and I love it. Not a problem at all.

    • Granted

Yeah, same here. I switch from Swype, Flex T9, and I always end back up at my beloved ShapeWriter.

  • Bigsike

Keyboard problem? I have never even heard of that fix the dam camera and car dock issues!!!

  • Anonymous

If you want an early look .605 which is buggier then .602 go here http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?5196-(Q)-Project-Cheesecake-can-it-be-done-for-DX and the link is in post #8

  • Anonymous

is this a bug only with multi touch? I don’t think I’ve noticed it.

I really hope a fix is included for the hard key brightness and camera settings.

  • Anonymous

Seems like it’d be a lot easier to install a third party keyboard, seeing that the moto one sucks in many other ways than just being buggy.

    • Anonymous

Third party keyboards are still laggy on the Droid X I’ve noticed

      • Balls

swiftkey x runs amazing on the X

  • When, I want this one now. I don’t know which bug we are
talking about, but I hope it’s the if the phone switches from landscape to
portrait view, it sends you to the top of the text message, and it’s horrible,
especially if you have a few days’ worth of texts. I hope this is it.

    • WAldenIV

I hope it fixes the keyboard being totally unresponsive at times.  Sometimes I open Handcent and have to wait a minute before it will let me type anything.
