Download: Working FM Radio App for DROID Bionic

We aren’t sure why Motorola continues to leave out the FM Radio app from their devices, but don’t worry as the version that worked on the DROID3 and almost any other Moto phone, certainly works on the DROID Bionic as well.  You will need head phones in order to use the app – install as you would any other non-market .apk file.

Cheers to everyone who sent this!

the Motorola Connected Music Player also has a FM tuner… and song ID… and works on the Bionic

  • Bcexperts

Thanks for this post. I somehow missed it in the specs that the Bionic had an FM receiver and thought I was going to have to live without it after upgrading from the X2. I use this extensively with my truck aux jack and thought I was going to have to go “old school” and use my stereo mute button every time I take/make a phone call in my truck. Amazing that I missed this after reading all of the info over the last few months.

I ordered the Bionic. If I could not have an FM Radio. I would not want the phone. But I HIGHLY recommend the Spirit FM Radio app from the market. Alot better than the app above.

    • Bcexperts

Does not work on non rooted devices. Wast of time.

  • Ryan C

Guess this doesnt work on the OG Droid.

    • Mike Cheatwood

No it does not, the app will launch and just sit there. I’m guessing SoC doesn’t support FM.

      • Ryan C

Yep, i found this out when i tried it. it just sits there but it was the one from the D3 post i tried. It doesn’t crash but it was like unresponsive except for the frequency slider.. when i downloaded this one and it didn’t show up as able to be installed in astro?

Anybody have one of these for the DX?

  • Cwa

I like the FM radio. I use it all the time at the gym to listen to the TVs. Works great!

  • Alec Bush

There any way to make it a transmitter, like the iphone has?

  • http://twitter.com/Chris_u_TWIT Ultr3chT

I third this, screw all the haters. Haters gonna hate.

Sigh I returned my Droid Bionic 20 minutes ago…..back to the prime I guess

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Specs alone a good phone does not make.

      • Alec Bush

As far as I can tell the only downfall of this phone is it’s screen. Everything else has been amazing for me. Although the battery cover kinda upsets me, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Luckily, I’m in the group with “Decent – to – good” battery life.

        • Bionic

You should root it.  Im seeing phenomenal battery life after root.  Im at 70% after 8hrs of moderate use today.

          • skeezicks

I’m totally digging my Bionic, although the battery life is totally meh. Could be because I use it a LOT. But nonetheless, I’ve held off rooting, because I didn’t do much with my rooted OG Droid that I couldn’t have done had I not been rooted. So tell me: after rooting, what did you do that helped increase your battery life? A different ROM? A different power management scheme? I’d love to know — I’m ready to root if there’s a genuine raison d’etre.

          • Bionic

The reason i rooted is cuz i hate bloat apps running all the time. Task manager does not close them. I froze all those apps and it saves RAM and battery life. Im not using custom rom. I just use golauncher.

          • Mike

how did you freeze the apps

          • Bionic

After the phone is rooted, download “bloat freezer” from the android market. There is a how to video you can watch before hand. Its so easy. You just click on the app and freeze it.

          • Bionic

Absolutely right. Moto should paid attention to what happened with the GS1…

  • http://www.facebook.com/Rotkaeqpchen Ulf Schuster

Has some graphics isues but still works better than the old FM app that was posted on xda. Thanks!

  • Bionic

Can you use this during airplane mode or no?

    • Mike Cheatwood

Just tried and that’s a negative. Apparently airplane mode really does turn off all radios

      • Bionic

lame. well then i dont need this.

  • Nowhere

Doesn’t seem to work on the DX…..?

  • Tom

I just loaded this app. I love it. Thanks for sharing :)

Great – turn your Bionic into a cheap transistor radio and listen to the trash on FM. I don’t know of anyone who has ever used their FM app on their phones.

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Why not AM? Many good shows on AM. Phil Hendrie being one.

      • KevinC

Because your phone doesn’t contain AM radio hardware.  The antenna would need to be too large.

        • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

I meant if you are going to include any radio hardware, why not AM? With headphones being the antenna for FM, wouldn’t those work for AM as well?

      • Anonymous

Phil Hendrie is hilarious! His Saturday show podcast is here: http://www.kfi640.com/podcast/PhilHendrie.xml

Weeknights you can hear him on iHeartradio on KTLK 1150.

    • Jasper

Its great for listening to Games when you are away from home. Sitting at a wedding on Saturday listening to your favorite College football team, comes in handy!

    • Pennywise

Football! ESPN Radio! Drew and Mike! Phil Hendrie!

  • Anonymous

maybe they keep omitting it on newer phones because no one listens to FM radio anymore. just a thought.

with that said, viva elliot in the morning!

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Then why put the hardware in the device?

      • Anonymous

        …to be a-holes?
lets be honest, if they included the app we’d all just bitch about it being [more] bloatware.

      • KevinC

it’s because it’s already included in system on a chip designs from the likes of TI, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc…

        • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

I did not know that. Thanks.

    • PSU_DI

Personally I think it is a worth while feature.. I use my phone as an FM radio when I’m at the Penn State games to be able to listen to the play by play while I’m in the stands.  Its much more convenient than carrying two devices like I used to have to do.

  • Youngfellainc

Once this APK is installed, can it be uninstalled easily.  Just in case an official release comes out and I want to remove it?

  • http://twitter.com/Chris_u_TWIT Ultr3chT

I just downloaded and installed this app directly from webtop. Mind=blown. Best phone I’ve ever owned.

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Minus pentile screen, 4g drops, poor battery life, auto focus issue,

      • Bionic

Hmmm, im having none of those issues.

        • Anonymous

How’d you get by the pentile screen?

          • Bionic

I think its totally fine. Its just opinion and frankly an over rated topic. This phone is great.

          • Anonymous

For me, I didn’t care about the “chain-fence” like appearance, it was more like images on youtube, and some of my pictures from gallery had a grainy look, and dull like color to it. If that display was good on color and sharp, I would been ok with the pentile screen.

I had great signal wit the phone, but the last straw on the device that made me turn it in was the “hissing” noise that the phone made when you put headphones in. Motorola had 9 months to make this phone amazing, but they were too cheap upgrade the camera and display. I think they were relying on Verizon marketing machine to sell the phone.

I really really wanted to like it, and i spent all weekend going back and fourth with it. The phone is by far the fastest device on Verizon’s network, and an average user would be ok with it.

          • Pennywise

Yup, screen looks good!  It has this amazing feature where you can actually see it in broad daylight.  Oh, and the colors aren’t these insane ‘made-up’ colors that burn my pupils like the (awful) OLED displays…

Good screen realestate thanks to the resolution. Great phone!

      • Anonymous

Everything except the screen could be fixed with a maintenance update. Like every Android phone before it. Even the mighty GS2 had one:

        http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/galaxy-s-ii-ke7-update-brings-better-battery-life-fixes-pink-s/

which goes to show ….no device is perfect at launch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/nathanielnewmanmusic Nathaniel Newman

I want a root hack to enable the webtop via just HDMI only.

  • http://twitter.com/il_Sole_Leone Stephen Box

    I prefer tunein radio myself

  • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

The leave it off because it’s one less thing people can complain about that doesn’t work.

  • Matt Schepp

Is there a version available for the Droid2?

  • Anonymous

Is there a way to use this feature to broadcast a fm signal from the phone so you can use it with your car radio without having to buy a transmitter?

    • mikeym0p

I’ve wanted this feature on a phone since the LG Chocolate 3 had it.

  • http://twitter.com/QSMinSD Q

Downloaded and installed.. worked great.. not sure why they left this off.

  • Toddersv

Just want to mention that I really appreciate all the Bionic posts/updates.  Please keep them coming!

    • mikeym0p

It makes me so impatient, I ordered mine and FedEx hasn’t shipped it yet. It’s expected later today though, but I’m so hyped to open it and get going

    • http://www.facebook.com/AviationPhotographer Britt Dietz

Agreed, thank you Droid-Life for giving us all the updates, tweaks, enhancements, tips, etc!

    • http://twitter.com/Chris_u_TWIT Ultr3chT

I third this, screw all the haters. Haters gonna hate.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LJGNGFI62VA6CSFRK3TPCRLFQU John Galt

Anyone see the permissions requested by the other file in the XDA forum?  Man, I did not hesitate to not install that.

That being said, this one doesn’t seem to work on a D2G.  I’m just sayin’…..

  • Anonymous

Is every new post going to be about the Bionic for the next month? Yes, I understand, it just came out, people bought it, joy was had by all. Can we move on?

    • http://www.facebook.com/AviationPhotographer Britt Dietz

For those who did get the Bionic, though, these posts are very helpful. Just like any phone that comes out, as new features, enhancements, and tweaks come in people want them. That’s the whole point of droid-life, reporting on the world of Droid phones. I’m very thankful for Droid Life keeping up on the bionic and all these new updates.

    • Anonymous

No.  You’re free to move on though.

  • PyroHoltz

I was stoked when this app came out for the D3….then I never used it.

  • Bunie

Does this work on the Droid Milestone?

    • PyroHoltz

I don’t think the Milestone(OD Droid) has an FM chip inside…sorry bud.

  • Unexpected62

When you make a post for the Bionic can you reference if it also works for the Droid3 as well, like you did in this post? Like before, does that wifi tether trick of modifying the .db file work for the Droid3 also? I want to assume so since they are running such similar software and both dual core etc, but wouldn’t want to screw anything up.
