DROID Bionic Gets Lengthy Video Walk-through: Wallpapers, Speed and a Minor Bug Included

By the time this phone arrives on September 8, there won’t be any surprises left thanks to a couple of brave tipsters who continue to feed us magic.  What we have here is another clip of the DROID Bionic that gives us a peep at what the static and live wallpapers look like, along with more LTE speed tests and an odd home screen bug.

And while this video like all Bionic videos these days, will receive plenty of hate, there is one thing that is clear after watching this – this phone appears to be incredibly fast.  Only some real hands-on time will tell the true story though.  Here’s to hoping that Blur doesn’t bog down its dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM like it seems to do with every other phone.

Cheers ___!

• Anthonyryan22

Where can I get the dump system with all the wallpapers..?

• This is what I hate about Moto devices & I’ve had 2 already and they all had glitches just like this one. Can you live with them Yes do you want to No. For 250 or 300 bucks I want a quality device. Yes they have come a long way but why not come a long way in the laboratories and in the testing phase of the phones life. Why must this phone show up on youtube and in customer’s hands with glitches? Really this isn’t the Bionic, the original Bionic was killed and they put another phone in its place and labeled it the Bionic. This device was rushed to match or come close to the release date of the original bionic which equals a bad over all experience. Just my 2 cents

• RW-1

You know … Here;s the thing.

We can all say that Motoblur is really nice and fast, now.

Well, sure, because the damn hardware has increased to be able to, and still run the OS as well.

So, that said … as fast as it is now, with blur, how about a showing of it without?
(For those who might want it that way …..    🙂    )

It would scream!

• Anonymous

I think this new version of motoblur is sick… I went from eh because of thickness to I’m getting it now.. no more waiting, and after using a charger.. I NEED 25mb down… CYA DX

• I am pleasantly surprised at how fast this thing is. Never was a fan of
TI OMAPs, but this new dual-core chip seems quite snappy. More on the
Bionic at my blog: http://wp.me/p1BlyQ-57.

• I’ve been a fan of the OMAP since I got my original droid.  Few mobile processors have shown the headroom capabilities that the lil OMAP in this thing has.  Not saying other processors are bad, just stating evidence of how strong this lil monster has been.  I’m hoping the dual core OMAPs have the same potential.

• Pennywise

Why? It’s clock-for-clock faster than the Snapdragons, the Tegra’s and the Sammy Exynos chips. (and it’s the only sop NetFlix approved:D)

• Anonymous

Is it just me, or is that not very impressive? It doesn’t look any faster than the Droid X running CyanogenMod. Although, when (if?) CM gets ported to the Bionic it should be quite an improvement. BTW…very boring video. Perhaps I’m not easily amused, but four minutes of live wallpapers and Blur bugs don’t really do it for me.

Hate to say it since I’ve been looking forward to an upgrade, but count me out of buying anything else from this company 🙁

• Ramelo27

Samsung Galaxy S 2!!!!!! screw Droid Bionic. Verizon can go Suck an EGG!!!! If the prime doesn’t come out soon on Verizon, I’m jumping ship to AT&T for the galaxy 2, 4g or no 4g. Stupid Verizon!!!!!!

• Pennywise

lol really dude? That is the least intelligent decision I’ve heard all week and I work with monkeys.

• Anthony Alves

OMFG That thing is looking sexy and Fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That bug can be fixed with a software update, nothing big.. CANT WAIT!

• Kylch

Is vanilla android better than this version of motoblur?

• Anonymous

The Bionic seems really smooth, and the Blur does not seem to bother the speed. I think in answer to the question “which phone is better” I believe it’s left up to the individual as we are all different and have unique preferences. All the new phones from here on out are going to have plenty of RAM a smooth OS and fast processors, dual core or not. So instead of dividing our Android Community lets unite and CELEBRATE all the MFG’s accomplishments. Stop the hate and ridicule of our phones and MFG.   Android Rules!!!!!!!
Right Kellex???

• So, corect me if I’m wrong; but the bug shown in the video would be caused by the Blur skin, rather than the phone itself, right? If that IS the case, then either a quick update to the Blur, or once root/rom is available, you could be rid of Blur as well as the bug.

• Anonymous

Correct.

• Or it could be solved with ADW or LauncherPro 🙂

• MBlnd

To be honest, LauncherPro is not even close to this smooth UI. This Phone’s UI is crazily good. It is fixable with a software update, but will there be a fast update to this is the question. Also, let’s not worry about this before it even is released.

• Where is the system dump already?!

• That video get me excited about getting this phone.

• I really hope the lock/phone off button is on the right side. That might be a turn off for me along with all the bloatware. But time will tell.

• eleazar

I have to admit that is sexy fast.

I wish he hadn’t spent half the video showing us that bug though.  I never zoom out to that view, so I know I won’t encounter the bug. (IMO, it’s just as fast to swipe to the page you want directly).

• Anonymous

Agree, I wish he would have shown a Quadrant score or AnTuTu test. The bug does not seem like a very big deal, all he did was a swipe and it was gone. Most of us don’t even use the preview screens anyway.

• MBlnd

I agree the bug is not a big deal. The question is how did this bug pass their testing (if it does get released this way here in US). Just too good UI based on the video, but such a small irresponsibility makes me wonder what other major bugs this phone could have. Motorola shouldn’t afford such silly bugs with such high competition. I spoke with a Verizon network Engineer who tested this phone, a friend of mine now, and he frankly agreed that their hardware is solid, but software is NOT up to the mark. He also had a comment on the screen when I asked him in comparison to Droid X2, and that comment wasn’t close to like. I wouldn’t compromise on less than average stuff on main highlights of phones these days.

• I want to see browser speed that bug is weak..it’ll prob be fixed before the bionic is out

• john patterson

Is the bug included in an update or will it be a stock feature?

• Christian

I think the update that’s supposed to unlock the bootloader will actually just implement the bug.

• Murphy

Minor bug? There shouldn’t be any bugs.

• Pennywise

Well you seem like a level-headed, understanding person living in reality…

• Murphy

After months of delay and to have a bug like that? Who would be?

• I guarantee that bug will be fixed by Sept 8 (If that’s actually the release date)

• Are you serious? Do you know how long Moto takes to fix bugs? No way this will be fixed or even Acknowledged by Sept. 8th.

• Anonymous

It’s a very minor bug, who cares.

• Yea I think it will be fixed by release anyway

• john patterson

No no you misunderstood it. Sept. 8 isn’t the day the phone will be released. Sept. 8 is the day they will announce the next delay.

• Pennywise

Neither Verizon nor Motorola have said/announced September 8th as anything significant to the BIONIC.

• john patterson

No no you misunderstood it. Sept. 8 isn’t the day the phone will be released. Sept. 8 is the day they will announce the next delay.

• Finally!

• Anonymous

The Bionic aside, why the hell must regular people INSIST on recording video vertically? That’s really been picking at me recently.

• Pennywise

My Kindergarten teacher taught me to put the round peg in the round hole…

• LarryM

Wow….a dual core processor and all the tech that went into that phone done in by the crappiest user interface ever. Blur just bogs down that system. A pity Google’s purchase of Moto won’t go through for another 12 months, at the minimum. Moto really needs to fire half or more of its software people. Fail.

• Dash Speeds

What bogging down did you see?? This is easily the smoothest I’ve ever seen Android run.

• Christian

While it may not be bogged down, if that’s the smoothest you’ve ever seen Android run, then just wait until you see a video of a phone without blur 😛

• Dash Speeds

I have, doesn’t look any better than my Incredible running stock (minus live wallpapers that its).

This is the first time I’ve seen live wallpaper run on a phone with no slow down at all.

• Anonymous

The Galaxy S phones could run live wallpaper without any slowdown also, that’s because of the SGX540 it had, which this phone also has only clocked much faster.

• Dude, you and the AOSP crowd. Yes, pure AOSP runs faster because…….THERE IS NOTHING TO RUN. If you want eye candy which is the whole point of having a dual core smartphone, you need a skin. Get over it.

• Christian

Eye candy? The whole point of having a dual core smartphone? I disagree with you on both of those points. I hate it when people state their opinions like facts. I personally think most of the manufacturer skins for Android are very ugly, especially blur. In my opinion, it’s the complete opposite of eye candy. I love my dual core smartphone because games run smoother, websites load faster, apps are more responsive, the battery lasts longer, etc. It has nothing to do with a skin (which my phone doesn’t have anyways). To be honest, how well a skin runs has a lot more to due with RAM than the CPU. Basically, I wasn’t trying to say AOSP is better or anything like that. I personally think that blur is very ugly and can’t stand it taking up  a fourth of the available RAM on my device.

• So you think all the OEM skins are ugly? Ok. AOSP has nothing. It’s boring. It’s my opinion that if you showed 100 people the latest blur-minus the bug and AOSP, 95% would want the Blur. Would you run your phone with no GUI if it meant a bit faster web page browsing, longer battery life, etc? I wouldn’t.

• Christian

Yes I do think they are all ugly. No, I wouldn’t run my phone without a GUI. I don’t think AOSP is boring. I don’t care what 95% of people in your imaginary survey say. I like the advantages that AOSP gives me, and I like how it looks too. If I bought this phone, I would use a market launcher like RoadsterHD1 said. It’s a nice phone, I just don’t like blur.

• Anonymous

Just use a market launcher

• You don make any sense bro….first you say its not smooth, which it is, next you say it bogs down the system, which it isn’t, then you say it takes up too much ram, which well 1gb is enough, just because you don’t like blur motor doesn’t mean its a shit bogged down device……this device seems very fluid and that screen actually looks better than I thought given its in a video and you can’t really tell

• Best thing I’ve seen you say in awhile

• Lakerzz

Besides the Sg2, this seems pretty darn smooth…

• Anonymous

I think you need to fire your optometrist and get new glasses.

• Pennywise

Wow… write a post on and English-speaking blog in a cross between Japanese and Swahili wtf?!?!?!  Wait, what the hell post did I just read?!?!  While I’m at it, what the hell video did you just watch?!?!

• Anonymous

I would like to see a third party launcher on this phone and see if it has any redraw like my X2 before i Supercharged it

• Any 3rd party launcher has screen redraws

• FortitudineVincimus

Wow.. that seemed like a LOT of preloaded apps

• RonsterWVU

Praise the lord… the Droid Bionic will be born!
Then Droid Life will move onto it’s next passion.

• Anonymous

This will be my phone. My OG is screaming at me to end its misery.

• Anonymous

Blur is such a pile of gorilla feces.

• Kierra

Sure

• Pennywise

2 DL readers like gorilla feces… learn somethin’ new every day!

• Idiopos

I trust Moto for the long run. Take the DroidX, it changed everything when it first came out and even now (don’t count 4G LTE) it’s still a damn good phone you can count on.

• Stelv81

Hopefully  A)Blur doesn’t take up massive amounts of cpu and memory even when another launcher is being used B) All or most of the 1gig of ram is available and not half used for a webtop C)That the encrypted bootloader can be bi-passed and blur can be completely removed. D) Google completely eliminates Blur in the future

• Anonymous

Once rooted you can back a copy of OEM rom and then proceed to either freeze all the blur or remove it completely. I would first freeze it with Titanium Back up of coarse and make sure it will not affect anything else and then remove it once I’m sure. Rooting will happen.

• Anonymous

B was never true, just a false rumor and the new Blur is fast and responsive and a huge improvement, it’s one of the better skins now imo.

• fernando zavala

that bug to me is very minor in my opinion, i’m sure it will get fixed.Bionic will be a solid phone, I’m going to wait my upgrade is in late sept.I know i can hold out for a price drop and hopefully more news on the prime not even sure if its coming to BIG RED fingers crossed. but we shall see when the phone drops kellex will have a great review for us i’m sure of that.

• GOGO

So its basically a bigger droid 3 without a keyboard.
Got it.

BTW, I just got my Droid 3 rooted and froze a ton of bloatware. Its super fast now!!

• Keith Sumner

yeah, with more RAM, different UI/lock screen, thinner form factor, bigger battery…yeah…it’s exactly the same isn’t it?

• GOGO

1. UI Looks the same.
2. Is it really thinner? Wasn’t it supposed to be over a .5inch thick?
3. It needs a bigger battery with one of those battery eating LTE radios in it.
4. I never said it was the same.

• GOGO

Also the UI is identical.

• Yeah, it’s basically my Droid X……but with dual core, more ram, 4G, higher res screen.

• GOGO

Newer version of android, newer blur, front facing camera, etc.

• Pennywise

noice! that’s awesome

• Anonymous

I don’t know if its just me, but starting at 2:47 it looks like its the D3. The chin on the bottom of the phone give the appearance of a clear separation of the two. I could and possibly am completely wrong.

• Anonymous

It’s the Bionic. Moto made a weird design choice by having a little indented lip area on this thing instead of having it more flush with the capacitive buttons area. Maybe so that its more comfortable in the hand and for not accidentally pressing those buttons.Anyway, it’s not on the “keyboard part” of the phone like the D3, but more on the screen side

• Anonymous

aaah that explains it, slightly deceiving to the eye but thanks @pharmdy:disqus

• Pennywise

It’s on 4G (in the video)

• Teevo0108

Every phone has some kind of bug. And so will the nexus prime. I haven’t seen an perfect phone yet.

• Pennywise

THE NEXUS PRIME IS BUGLESS!! It’s feature 9000!!

• Ravnos CC

This question might be moot, but anyone successfully upgrade to a 4G phone from a D1 and retain unlimited data for $29.99?

Thanks.

• Yes, if you already have unlimited data, you’ll be grandfathered in and continue unlimited data at teh same price.

• Ravnos CC

Thanks !

• babadush

how in the world did they not catch that bug?

• Anonymous

The guy is pushing the home button right after selecting a screen.  When will someone ever do that?

• babadush

sure why wouldn’t they? people open an app and forget that they needed to do something else on the homescreen or another app.

Dude, Im with ya. But my OG Droid is falling apart! I think I can wait another 45+ days! Arhhhhh!

• Anonymous

Dude, Im with ya. But my OG Droid is falling apart! I think I can wait another 45+ days! Arhhhhh!

• Looks fast and fluid.

• Anonymous

Dude, Im with ya. But my OG Droid is falling apart! I think I can wait another 45+ days! Arhhhhh!

• OG Droid

I think one think all of us OG Droid owners can agree on, it looks like the wait for us to upgrade may finally be here(bionic or prime).

• Anonymous

Basically, I need to compare the Bionic, Vigor, and (if it’s coming to Verizon) the N Prime.

• EC8CH

unless you absolutely have to… I’d stick it out and wait for some more concrete info on the availability of the Prime on VZW

• Anonymous

Nah, tired of waiting.  Besides, if the Prime has a 4.5″ or larger screen I’m not sure I want it. If it ends up being that damn good I’ll just sell the Bionic and buy it off contract.

• Lil_blue04

It seems like you’re the only one on here with any sense! People keep saying that they want to wait for the next best thing… but by the time that happens, “the next best thing” will be something else! There’s no winning when it comes to all this madness. I agree with you. I’m getting the Bionic and selling it if the Prime ends up being better.

• Kudos brother finally someone gets it…people are going to keep waiting…its a vicious cycle

• Anonymous

I know.. seriously.. right now every new phone will have the same standard specs.. FFC, dual core, LTE, 1gb of ram… there might be a 1.25gb phone or 1.5ghz dual core.. but you’re NEVER gonna notice that crap.. you purchase now, by the time ur upgrade is ready LTE chips will be smaller so LTE phones will be much thinner, there will be quad core, and maybe something even better that we haven’t heard of.. right now is the perfect time to buy unless you a minor spec whore

• Anonymous

As much as I want to upgrade (SO bad), I’m just NOT feeling the Bionic.  It’s gotta be the Vigor or the Prime for me unless the Bionic gets rooted.

• EC8CH

Even if you are feeling the Bionic, it’s been delayed so long that it’s followup the Droid HD should be coming out shortly after

• Anonymous

I agree. I don’t know how anyone could jump on this thing immediately for two reasons : 1) Price. $300 is insane and waiting a month or so for a price drop would be smart. 2) The leaked info about upcoming phones is too good to upgrade now. Even if it means waiting another month or two – it’s worth it. I want a phone that I will be completely satisfied with for the next 2 years (at least). I foresee the Pentile screen and the typical Moto software-related problems to get in the way. I’ll admit that I’m still impressed with the phone – looks cool with the snazzy animations and speed. But….HD screens and faster processors coming soon? Need to wait for those

• BLUEETHERNOV13

What Makes you guys soooo sure the price is going to DROP??? It might drop as a BOGO for a few days for christmas , but thats it…this is a major phone, VERIZON wont drop this price til next March…

• Mrbrooks418

the’ll drop the price before that. Especially when the dual 1.5ghz core HTC’s and who ever else starts dropping in a month or two the bionic will be in the slow lane and loose luster. the Thunderbolt has held on to its price cause the hasnt been anything to touch it. now that the bionic is out and Vigor on the way it started to drop.

• Anonymous

No.

• RollTide17

But keep in mind that sometime within the next year or so quad core processors are releasing and I’m sure  there will be info outed for those. Even though this new Nexus sounds amazing I think I’m going to go with the Bionic and then shift focus towards a quad core with my next upgrade. I can’t wait any longer with my current phone. I have an Eris and I hate it.

• Anonymous

The Charge is still selling for $300.

• Anonymous

Not if you buy it from amazon or Costco. I never buy phones directly from Verizon. Since I found out other retailers ALWAYS sell them for SO much cheaper, I have always purchased from Costco. Got my wife an incredible 2 for 80 while VZ was still selling it for 149/200. I can predict the Bionic being cheaper at another retailer soon.

• Anonymous

I take it you’ve never bought through a 3rd party huh? fine print is unbelievable… try getting a replacement phone, or getting your contract end date moved up.. you purchase through a 3rd party, you are under their terms.. I’ll take VZW anyday.. there is a reason they are cheaper

• Anonymous

It may be a hassle through online retailers, but Costco is fantastic with that stuff. You get the 1 year warranty through Verizon and if you pay with AmEx, you get an additional year free. Also, Costco only charges tax on the price you pay, not the retail price of the phone.

• Asur

As someone who works at CostCo, more specifically their wireless affiliate, Wireless Advocates, I can say definitively you’ve never shopped with us and have no grounds to make your accusations.

Firstly, yes, we’re cheaper.  Simple explanation, we buy in bulk.  That’s the whole point of CostCo.
Yes, we do a “Customer Letter”.  The “fine print” on it?  A 12pt version of the fine print on your VzW contract, with some extra information about our activation fee refunds, extended 90-day in-store exchange period (Grabbed the Droid Bionic, Vigor comes out 2 months later, you want to switch?  No problem at CostCo, just pay the difference in the discounted prices!  VzW Corporate?  SoL, sucker.  Want to swap within your 14 day at a VzW store, enjoy your $35 restocking fee, too!)  Contract end dates?  We have the same leeway a corporate store has.  Manufacturer’s Warranty?  1-year, still handled by VzW just like from a corp store, but if you need it in the first 90 days, you come to us and get a brand-new phone instead of a refurbished piece of trash.  Bought on CostCo.com?  No problem, come into the store and we’ll still take care of you.

NE2 offers?  We usually beat them.  Won’t beat them on cost with the Bionic ($299-$50NE2=$249, we’ll be at $299), but we’ll throw in the car charger, home dock, car dock, and a couple other extras for free.  The docks alone at VzW with a 25% discount will still run you nearly $100 after tax, to say nothing of a car charger (@facebook-770435132:disqus 24?  Really, Big Red?)

Yes, some 3rd-party retailers are utter trash, but do not lump a company like the one I work for with the hole-in-the-wall, fly-by-night, there-and-gone operations.  That $50/year membership nets you a hell of a lot, and I can save someone the cost of a year’s membership on a single phone.

This may be a bit aggressive, since I don’t care for anon’s mindlessly bashing companies they’ve never dealt with.  Still, stop on by, any WSE worth their job will treat you right and give you a better deal than Big Red.

• Anonymous

Normally those deals from Amazon are only for new customers and well, you need a Costco membership to buy it from Costco not to mention they don’t offer NE2 or early upgrade discounts plus the fine print ABerry mentioned.

• Anonymous

if the bionic tought you anything.. everything is around the corner… at some point you need to just choose.. if you pick this up right now, you’ll have everything any new phone will have, a dual core processor, 1gb of ram, a FFC, and LTE.. the diff between 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5ghz on a dual core chip will not be noticed… if you grab now, your next upgrade can be a true upgrade, quad core.. you wait until the vigor comes out in 4 months maybe, then you get what .5 extra ghz which you would never notice unless you run benchmarks.. BITE, a 720p screen on a 4.3 or 4.5″ is pointless.. mirror mode anyway FTW

• Anonymous

This is a logical argument, but it really depends on the person. MY reservations aren’t with the specs of the processor, but rather with the display and the software. I owned an X2 for 1 week and I had a real problem with the Pentile screen and poor software performance. Seeing as the Bionic will most likely have a Pentile screen and Moto software, I don’t think it is crazy for me to have doubts about it. I guess, theoretically, someone could be stuck waiting for the next best phone forever. That’s not me. I’m ready to upgrade, but want to be completely satisfied with my phone, and since the next phone on VZ after the Bionic will probably be out late Sept/earl Oct., it couldn’t hurt to make sure the pro’s will outweigh the cons. I’m still gonna check out the Bionic and I’m hoping that I’ll like it. Even then, I’d wait for the price to drop from $300.

• Anonymous

Thats the thing “probably come out” we said the bionic would “probably be out late april” and look how that turned out.. also I had no clue about this penile screen crap till it was posted online and became a cult topic.. my Roommate has an x2 and I can’t tell the difference worth crap

• Anonymous

I wouldn’t bet on it.  You’re probably looking at a 4 month wait at least.

• They said the droid HD isn’t a super phone either more likely bank on the prime

• Teevo0108

The DROID 3 was rooted. I believe the bionic will also since they both will be running the same software.

• FortitudineVincimus

Don’t forget the Droid HD

• Anonymous

Kellex, I think you should have done 3 reviews on this phone by now, VZW/MOTO need to send you a device asap!

• Teevo0108

Hey I I belive this phone will rule all machines for a good while. At least 4months.

• ODAWG

Definitely waiting for the Prime…the bloatware being installed on the Bionic is ridiculous.  Besides, with the uncertainty of Motorola’s future, I think I’ll just wait a few more months.  If the Bionic has taught us anything it’s patience.

• EC8CH

+1 for that last sentence

• Teevo0108

If anything that’s why u should want moto they will be owned by google. to me other then nexus moto usually gets the updates before everyone else.

• Anonymous

He wasn’t referring to the fact the nexus updates sooner than everything else, but to the fact that motorola loads the phone with useless bloatware. Im all for google owning moto but ill wait till i see a pure google phone come out form moto to buy from them again. For now, I think the nexus Prime with be worth the wait.

• Barbacoa

Yes but chances are goo that you will start to see updates for Moto’s droid line up that will start to pull blur off of them.

• Anonymous

Probably not. Moto will keep blur on there.

• Anonymous

I hope you are right but I have my doubts. And im not about to put my faith in moto they they may one day  update this or any phone  to a pure google OS. The prime on the other hand will be well worth the wait.

• Here’s where I stand on this:  It’s inevitable that the ROM makers are going to release sans-BLUR ROMs for this phone.  Once that happens,  what’s the difference?

• Anonymous

A few differences: sans-blur roms are never as good as pure google rom imo. And what about when there is an update like ICS for example. then you have to play the waiting game for the update to be released on the bionic, wait for it to be hacked and de-blured again. The way I see it is you will spend more time waiting for root, AOSP Roms, Updates, roots for the updates, and so on than you will for the Prime. With the release of a MAJOR OS just around the corner that is going to change the layout of the phone, (no hard keys and bigger screen) why would you get the bionic? Its going to be overshadowed and outdated in just a few months and you will be stuck on a 2yr plan waiting. then again who knows if the nexus Prime will even be on Verizon.

• 1:  Give an example of how a sans-BLUR ROM is not as good as a stock google experience ROM.  I’m anxious to hear what examples you may have.  Keep in mind I’m not simply referring to a stock rom sans-BLUR, but ANY sans-BLUR ROM that may come out including AOSP ROMs, which is what I prefer, honestly.

2:  It takes how long on average for ROM developers to start pushing out the good stuff?  A couple weeks usually.  Either way, you’re waiting for it.  The Bionic is still a monster phone regardless of it coming w/ BLUR initially.  With BLUR stripped off, it’ll be even more monster.  I’m not discrediting the Nexus Prime in any way, simply refusing to discredit the Bionic for a stupid reason.

3:  ICS will be pushed quickly, I believe.  Despite that, as soon as ICS source is released, the ROM developers will be adopting it.  Once again, I don’t personally like stock roms, BLUR or sans-BLUR.  I prefer AOSP.  There is going to be a wait for AOSP no matter what device you get.  I will be hard-pressed to believe that the ROM developers would ignore the Bionic.  Even in the face of a hideous bootloader on the Droid X, there has still been a ton of focus on that device.  The Bionic will be no different, and I choose to believe that Motorola is doing something different with this device than it did w/ the Droid X.

Bigger screen:  OK.  If you want that, no rebuttal whatsoever.  I’m still an OG Droid owner, and the 4.3″ screen that the Bionic has is going to be a nice upgrade to what I currently have.  As far as screen size goes, IMO, that’s a “to each his own” situation.  Some people prefer smaller sized phones.  This is a moot point, however, as your original comment and my response had nothing to do w/ screen size.  It was simply a Google Experience vs. MotoBLUR situation, and my first point still holds true:  What difference is there in a Google Experience vs a Sans-BLUR ROM?

• Anonymous

You make a good point about blur vs stock I will admit it doesn’t take much away and with third party launchers you can customize it to your liking. I guess my point was that it takes longer to receive updates apposed to a nexus phone. And a fast update to ics is just your opinion, the I personally don’t have that much faith in moto for that to happen but that’s just my own opinion.

As for dev support I do think this phone will get a lot attention and if the bootloader gets unlocked that would be great. But who know how longthat will take.

I wasn’t trying to “rebuttal “with screen size. But about the screen I currently have the x2 and although the color is great the pixels suck and as you may know scrolling gets blury. You will se what I’m talking about. Also just a quick note the larger screen won’t increase the size of the phone itself it will just replace the area where buttons were. But like your prediction for a fast ics update I am purely speculating the nexus prime screen size.

• I’m personally more of a stickler of aspect ratio, myself.  If the screen doesn’t increase the size of the phone, then you’re going to be skewing the aspect ratio.  I personally don’t want to add ANOTHER preset to my video converter to meet some strange foreign resolution, and I’d prefer to limit the size of the letterboxes on the videos I’m playing.

Also, a major selling point of the bionic for myself is simply the Webtop feature and its capabilities.  I’m determined to turn the Droid Bionic into a custom CarPC using Webtop and an external touchscreen display.  My goal is to have everything mounted seamlessly with my custom interior (when I get the money to actually do it) and have it where I slam my phone in the dock (which is also seamlessly mounted) and boom,  instant CarPC on screen with my music/videos/web/etc…

That is something that I’d be hard-pressed to believe is going to be on the nexus prime.  As with just about everything else,  this is obviously a “to each his own” thing, but for me, it’s a strong selling feature.  Also, I’ve personally found that the actual buttons (or rather their haptic feedback) are a good indicator of when your phone is being a lil bit bratty.  On the OG Droid, if he’s a lil upset, haptic feedback stops on the touch buttons.  That’s when you know it’s time to take a bit of action.  I’m sure the bionic and prime will both not run into any kinda problems like that for quite some time (except code problems), but it’s going to eventually happen, because as software evolves, so do the requirements for it.  I have a xoom, and while I love it, I still would personally like some dedicated buttons, honestly.

Funny how we are talking so much about the prime and yet know nothing about it. For all we know it won’t even be on Verizon haha its just a bunch of speculation. The car idea sound insane and you should totally post pics when you finish.

• Banggugyangu

Seeing as how webtop is patented by Motorola and the prime is samsung, and I don’t expect it to have that. I also don’t expect prime to be on verizon as no other nexus phones have been yet.

I’ll probably be blogging the progress of my CarPC ventures. If I do, I’ll probably send an email to Kellex and see if he wants to post it here.

See to say that no other nexus phones have been on big red is why the prime wont be is why I am hoping it will be. I am holding on to a thread here man. We/I have to believe the Nexus Prime will be released on Verizon. I just have to lol.

• I didn’t say it won’t.  I said I’m not expecting it to be.  I hope it will, despite not getting it.  Verizon needs some nexus lovin.  But with the trend being that it hasn’t as of yet,  I don’t expect that to change.

• Anonymous

I know what you were sayin. I hope your wrong tho. We do all need some Nexus Lovin!

• Anonymous

Verizon is responsible for the bloatware, not Moto.  All of Verizon’s phones have it (with the exception of the iHype).

If anything that’s why u should want moto they will be owned by google. to me other then nexus moto usually gets the updates before everyone else.

All the complaining about this phone has shown that most here have no patience at all.

• Pennywise

Just the loud, whiny ones; they are not the majority, trust me. Al Gore invented the internet for his voters, afterall.

• OF COURSE this phone is fast in this video.  There is only 3 screen being used with only 3 widgets.  My Droid 3 can accomplish that same task.  Put some more widgets on there and we’ll see how it acts.

Also, how bout showing the Bionic coming out of a memory intensive app so we can see the good ol fashion Motoblur screen redraws.  That’s always a crow pleaser!

I’ve seen a similar bug to that on the D3 as well.  Not sure how to replicate it though.  Anyway, I got rid of the stock/laggy blur launcher in favor of launcher pro.  Phone is much much faster without that garbage launcher.

• Every phone if loaded with Widgets will have lag that is why ios won’t use Widgets…another thing tho is sometimes lag isn’t because of the UI but bad coding on part of developers and their Widgets… I’ve noticed some Widgets are just not coded right and with it, it lags but without it, its fine…so I wouldn’t blame all on UI..

• Anonymous

This new launcher is hardware accelerated by the SGX540, I doubt it will lag.  Also, in my experience adding more widgets doesn’t usually decrease performance unless they’re giant widgets with animations.

Btw, every phone’s launcher has to redraw after running a memory hogging application like a game.

• Stephen D

Not true. The launcher is not hardware accelerated. But, it’s smooth enough that it almost feels like it is. Guess the OMAP4 just kicks ass.

And yes, very true. The Bionic will certainly have less redraws, and be able to run more programs at once. Though I’ve noticed that since I rooted and removed the bloatware, I haven’t had one redraw…

• Anonymous

According to Anandtech Moto’s new 3D launcher is hardware accelerated and its performance is indicative of that.

• Stephen D

Exactly. The Droid 3 is just as fast. Although I’ve been using Blur since I got it, and with the home screens filled. It’s very fast and smooth, especially with the bloatware removed now. It’s the first version of Blur that is usable-it isn’t a buggy lag-fest.

And Kellex doesn’t seem to understand that the extra RAM will make no difference in the phone’s speed. It’ll just let you have more things open at once. The phone doesn’t magically get faster because it has 512mb more RAM. It’s the exact same CPU, GPU, and screen(well, size is different, but resolution and that are the same), which are what actually affect performance.

• EC8CH

Looks good… but if there’s a chance the Prime is headed for VZW I’m waiting.

• ~dArK.AnGeL

DOUBTS NOW!!!;L…  NEXUS PRIME NOW!!!!!

• Anonymous

With all of the leaks you guys are going to delay the phone even longer.

• Anonymous

Looks pretty sweet to me…

• Very impressive bug!

• Anonymous

Screen looks great (It’s probably STILL Pentile) and looks smooth as butter. That bug thou makes it look like it had a stroke trying to process the ‘HOME’ button.

• Anonymous

Any linux users notice a couple compiz like effects? Such as the wobbly widget when he shook it about.

• I was thinking the same thing. Maybe we will see burning windows, cube view, exploding windows and rain drops in the future. LOL.

• Avery Ma

CUBE!

• Anonymous

I don’t usually choose what screen I want to go to then immediately hit the home button…

• Illinipoke98

Yeah I didn’t catch that that was what he was doing at first.  I thought the bug was happening just after he selected screens.  You’re right, in real world use that bug situation would rarely occur. (Still shouldnt be there)

• Anonymous

a phone with non-existent screen redraw *dreams*

• Anonymous

I have to say, it looks pretty darn fluid to me.

• That bug is gonna bug the shit out of me now that it has been pointed out. Good thing I use ADW EX haha.

• Dash Speeds

I’ll take this bug over Sense any day.

I LIKE THIS PHONE BUST NEXUS PRIME SPEC ARE GIVING ME A WODDY

• MikeyBotz

What is a Woddy?

• lilschil

A Woddy is what comes out of a Woody.  So he must REALLY like the Prime’s specs.

• OG Droid

Dang didnt I just post this in the Boot article. No love??

• The bug probably doesn’t matter to 90% of us anyways, as most of us use third party launchers.

• Anonymous

Yeah i bet GoLauncher will run smooth as butter on this phone.  I have to admit the new Blur does not look too bad tho.  I will likely end up going with GoLauncher tho.

• babadush

still. they’ve had how long to perfect this and didn’t bother to fix such an obvious bug? I use launcher pro but for the regular people who don’t know what other launchers are…that will be very annoying

• small bug and only happened when looking at that screen view….with my OGD even rooted I have had it do something similiar to that a few times, no biggie easy to fix

• GOGO

GoLauncher, ADW Launcher EX, and Launcher Pro all run smoothly on any Android phone.

• Anonymous

GoLauncher isn’t nearly as fast as LP on my Droid.
