Gmail App for Android Receives Update to 2.3.5, Performance Improvements and Custom Label Notifications Included

Wow, a Gmail update; haven’t seen one of these since February.  Today’s is greatly welcomed though, and includes a pretty solid list of new enhancements.  You can now set up separate notification sounds for labels and also tell your account to remember to “Show Pictures” for specific senders (thank you!).  There are other tweaks, and we’ve listed them for you below.

Changelog:

  • Save bandwidth and battery by only syncing priority mail
  • Use label notifications to mash up filters, labels, and ringtones
  • Remember “Show Pictures” for senders
  • Turn off sticky message actions in landscape or all orientations
  • Better TalkBack support for accessibility
  • Performance improvements

One nice new thing is multiple notifications in the notification bar for different accounts.  I’m running two accounts and it now will put up one notification for each account so I can choose from the pull down instead of choosing the single notification then being sent to another chooser for which account to look at.

    • Guest

It is only good if you can turn it off, I have five accounts and find it very cluttering. I’d love to have the ability to switch to one notification in the bar.

So they also broke access to the content resolver… if anyone from Google sees this, can they implement an API of some sort.

Maybe something like send an Intent to somewhere in the Gmail for permissions to either write and/or write to email selectively (for example, in friendcaster only from facebook.com) or all of it if they’re bothered about security.

Then send out broadcasts when mail arrives on something like “com.google.gmail.MAIL_RECIEVED” but only to the apps that have been authorized, which is possible by the Android APIs since very early on. Then to add/remove email, maybe a service or something?

I wish they wouldn’t brake things without brining replacements immediately.

FYI, I’m pretty sure this update will break the Friendcaster “simulated-push” feature.  Every time you get an email notification, instead of popping up the notification like it’s supposed to, Friendcaster will give you the good old force close error.  I posted about this in the support area for Friendcaster, but who knows if/when they’ll be able to work this out.

       IFSCstands for ‘Indian Financial System

within the country, you can easily do it once you know the IFSC codes of both
the banks. IFSC required whether you are using RTGS, NEFT or CEMS, which are

My paid Gmail Unread Count is force closing after this update. Anyone else?

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Yep. The 2.3.5 gmail changed many things and most widgets force close now. Sucks.

      • Anonymous

thanks.. problem is.. even after uninstalling the update.. it doesn’t work.

    • guest

this also kinda applies to launcherpro gmail dock icon. it no longer shows unread mail count but doesn’t force close when launching mail from the dock

Any idea how the per-label notification settings work when an email has multiple labels? I don’t see any options for setting priority or anything. I guess it will either try to play both ringtones or just pick one randomly!

  • FortitudineVincimus

The last update caused so many issues with not pushing emails or getting notifications, I never updated it. And that was Feb. I will still wait on this one. I already see LP widgets are affected, so I will pass for now.

Also, I hate it when they generically say “Performance improvements”

  • RonsterWVU

    Won’t update on my Droid X…. :(

  • AdamDanger

Won’t install on Liberty 0.9 on D2. “Package file was not signed correctly”

    • Pattont

You have to use root explorer to rename gmail.apk in the /system/app folder to something like Gmail.apk.bak, reboot your phone. Download Gmail from the market which puts the application in /data/app folder and you will likely get force closes on the application. Then, goto the /data/app folder and move the gmail apk that the market installed (can’t remember the exact com. name for it just look for the gmail logo) to the /system/app folder, rename to Gmail.apk then click it to install. Once installed reboot your phone. It should be good to go.

…and as always, it’s unavailable in Germany (because of the stupid G-Mail vs. Gmail trademark battle over here). Does anyone have an APK download URL?

It wouldn’t download for liberty on gingerbread. So I deleted the apk with root explorer. Then my shit starts failing all over the place. The new one downloads and then doesn’t open, getting a bunch of FCs. Sigh the shit I put up with on my droid x

So this update broke GmailWidget+ and LauncherPro’s Gmail widget.  Anyone know of a widget that still works?

as of right now the only way for any 3rd party gmail app to work is you have to be rooted and then move the app to the system/app folder. I am the dev for the app “Notify Me” and that is what i am telling everyone that emails me about it.

rolling back on the update does not fix it either it seems, once you update you cant go back

      • Amazonfemme

Thank you so much for this. It worked perfectly.

      • mistertoo

I lost my Gmail Unread Count Widget to the Gmail update. I uninstalled the widget, uninstalled the Gmail update, rebooted the phone and reinstalled the widget and everything is good again.

    • RW-1

The issue with the API affecting Launcher Pro’s widget was reported a few weeks ago, the dev stated to not accept the update, he is working on a fix.

    • http://androidforums.com/members/kwest12.html kwest12

It also broke Friendcaster’s “simulated-push” notifications.
