Asus Transformer to See Official Netflix Support With Android 3.2 Update?

When Netflix decided to start showing support for Honeycomb tablets last week, we found that the file could be side-loaded (get the apk file here) onto a variety of tablets and work flawlessly – except for the Asus Transformer, that is.  Unless you were rooted and willing to flash a .zip file, you were simply out of luck.  The good news is, that there may be official Netflix support coming once the device receives its Android 3.2 update that has been flagged as coming “soon.”

There has been no official word yet from Asus or Netflix on this being the case, but their Transformer spec page certainly thinks the device is ready.  And since the update is just around the corner, we are tossing together a couple of puzzle pieces to come to this conclusion…

Cheers Anthony!

  • Guap

that spec page has removed mention of netflix!!

  • Cadmano

No word on Netflix running on Asus Transformer (not rooted) yet? I can’t get it to run on my DroidX either.
I thought crackle was going to be a temperary solution until Asus/Netflix got it together but when I go to play the movie on my Asus it just goes blank. Oh well at least Crackle works on the DroidX for now. The smaller screen will have to do….

    Wake up Asus and Netflix!

The mentioned specs are not there…..

They removed “Netflix” from that spec page. LOL

Anyone use a stylus with theirs? I’m probably going to be getting a Transformer next week and I’m curious as to whether or not the Dagi stylus works well and if there’s a good app for handwritten notetaking. HTC had one made by Dagi for the HD2 and I’ve heard good and bad things. Thanks guys.

For those who don’t know, the Dagi let’s you see where you are pressing down better for more accurate writing/drawing.  http://www.dagi.com.tw/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=p602&Rcg=2

The old one, like the one they made for HTC had a red dot but I think I like the pen style one better.

android 3.2 too bad, everything is destroyed, how to recover the 3.1 version of the Asus Eee help

  • Stoner Wesley

They took that app off the list and i still cant get netflix with 3.2.

  • Brian

I received the asus tf101 android 3.2 update today, and still no luck on Netflix. Neither the widely available 1.3 app, and nothing in the android market … yet. Netflix streaming on this pup will surely mean the FUTURE IS HERE.

  • Gijello24

Just got 3.2 today on my Transformer and Netflix still does not work.

  • joe guest

    updat today, no netflix…

  • Jim

I just got the 3.2 update….. Netflix is still not working.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CYQUMMC7Z4UBLSHQAJGNJBKVPM JamesS

Yup, I can confirm that neither the older or newer version of Netflix works for streaming. Looks like Asus has a little explaining to do.

      • Emileenb

Mine does not work with 3.2 either. So disappointing!

I have the ASUS and I absoluteyly love it. I tested the Xoom, the Galaxy and the ASUS. I had the Xoom for 2 weeks and liked it but didn’t like that I couldnt us microSD slot. Tried the Galaxy next and took it back after 2 days — didn’t like the feel of it; light but it felt cheesy to me; plus only 3MP cam and no HD video and no HDMI or USB was drawback.

ASUS was the last one I tried because I couldn’t bring myself to give it back — not even long enough to try another temporarily.

MicroSD, HDMI, 5MP camera, 1.2 camcorder, HD video. then add extra 8 hours battery life with the keyboard, SD slot and 2 USB ports. Why on earth would I ever consider any other tablet?

I would like to express my thanks to you for rescuing me from this particular matter. As a result of looking out throughout the online world and seeing basics which are not productive, I thought my life was done. Existing without the strategies to the issues you have sorted out through your good guide is a crucial case, as well as the kind that would have adversely damaged my career if I had not encountered your blog. Your actual mastery and kindness in touching every part was excellent. I don’t know what I would have done if I had not come across such a solution like this. It’s possible to now look ahead to my future. Thanks a lot so much for your reliable and result oriented guide. I will not hesitate to suggest your web sites to any person who should get guidelines on this topic.

I got $31.68 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Dell laptop for $95.84 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $53.79 to get. Here is the website we are using to get all this stuff GrabPenny.com

ASUS has been very good supporting this tablet from an updates standpoint.  The *only* negative thing I have to say about it is whenever I use the built in DLNA app to browse pics, videos and music from my iomega NAS, it displays the files but when I try to open them it crashes.  Same as it has been since 2 updates ago.  That hasn’t been too bad since their are apps in the market to do this too but the built in one would have been nice had it worked.

Other than that, like everyone else said, great battery life, great features, excellent hardware, etc.  All that and a great price.

    • Absolutxtacy15

I tried to access my NAS the other day and could not play any of the movies and then the application for closed. Have you found a good alternative app on the market that works and plays videos without any issues?

  • Beentcrawfordrrt

I also love my transformer. I rarely pick up my laptop anymore. Screen is nice. Runs very smoothly. It would be just about perfect if Netflix, HBOgo, an Hulu would work. By the way, there is a deal out right now to get transformer for 299 after you take 100 dollar Staples coupon to Office Depot. See slickdeals.com for the deal conversation.

Can’t wait to get the Transformer!!!  I am supposed to be getting one this week.  So you can run the Netflix app on a stock Transformer?

  • http://twitter.com/DrakeT3k Michael Downing

I have an non-rooted ASUS Transformer with 3.1, running Netflix…  Netflix runs great on mine…  Don’t understand what this news is about Netflix Support not there till 3.2 comes… Maybe 3.2 is when Netflix will come standard on the Transformer, but for those with 3.1 Netflix is available in the Marketplace Now…

    • http://twitter.com/daveloft Dave Loft

It doesn’t work for most people. What build number are you running? I have 8.4.4.11 and I get the Netflix error 12001 when I try to stream anything.

      • http://twitter.com/DrakeT3k Michael Downing

I have the same build number…  Netflix app was working the day that I downloaded it…  I can browse, search and add to queue, but as soon as I try to play a movie I get the same message…  I did see last night that there was an update (when I launched the app), but the Netflix app is blocked from installing on the tablet (and no longer shows up in the marketplace for the tablet)…  I’m thinking the few days that I was able to download the app it was possibly accidentally leaked to the marketplace…  Guess I will have to wait till 3.2 comes out — hope it comes soon…

BTW, stock, not rooted. Didn’t take more than 10min.

I downloaded the 3.2 file for my transformer last week and updated. Was easy. I Google searched for the file. And yes, the Netflix version from last week works flawlessly now. I didn’t know this was not out for everyone yet.

    Search for build number: hmj37.us_epad-8.4.4.11-20110711

I had an update pushed to my transformer not that long ago and have the same build number but it’s not running 3.2. I think you might be wrong there

No, got 3.2 from the net last week. Non.t sure what the other update was
yesterday. Will see if I can post a screenshot.

what is the rooting process from this build? i cant find anything for it, only earlier builds.

        • Anonymous

The way you had to root the Transformer in the past was by downgrading the OS to a version that was crack-able by GingerBreak.  In the 8.4.4.11 build, they eliminated the ability to downgrade the OS.  The only way to Root it is to use to use the nvflash method.

Follow the video here and use the files in the post and you will be rooted in 15 minutes! http://tabletroms.com/forums/showthread.php?976-Nvflash-Unbricking-and-forever-root

How happy are you with the Transformer? I am thinking about getting one soon!

    • Anonymous

Absolutely LOVE it! Had the Xoom for a month, and returned it… everything I liked in the Xoom it has, but when I dock it, I can use it to take notes in class perfectly… doesn’t miss a beat.

      • genetic_bloom

What app do you use to take notes with? the preinstalled Polaris office or something else?

      • http://www.InteractiveDNA.com Ney Vasconcelos

Thanks! What do you think about the Galaxy Tab 10.1? If you had to choose between the transformer or the galaxy tab 10.1, witch one you would get it? And why?

        • Anonymous

I’ve only played with the galaxy tab briefly, but honestly, I think the
transformer is the best, at least for me, because of the keyboard dock. It
seriously turns it into a perfect netbook… 2 for 1 lol

        • Anonymous

I wouldn’t even consider Galaxy Tab 10.1… If you are thinking about purchasing the Galaxy Tab 10.1, you might as well purchase Ipad 2…  Also you have to take into consideration that Samsung has one of the worst software support in the world…  They take forever to get out OS and software updates for their line of products… Examples:  Galaxy S series, Galaxy 7 and their other mobile products normally take 4 to 6 months longer to release any OS updates than any other manufactures…

        • Jon Garrett

I have the 10.1 but I would have gotten the Eee Pad if it was in stores the day I got the 10.1

        • charlie meetze

if you want the thinnest and lightest then go with the galaxy tab 10.1 it really is extremely close to ipad 2 physically. But if you want more options and the ability to be a ‘netbook’ as well then go with the Transformer!
Go to BestBuy and look at them all if you have doubts.

        • scadole

no expandable memory on the gal tab, that was a deal breaker for me.  i love my transformer.

    • kuboo99

I am quite happy with mine too. There is a little flex on the plastic back, but not terrible. Other than that, great tablet. The dock is quite useful, and it looks like ubuntu is coming to it.

    • Anonymous

The only way my you can get the Transformer from me is to pry it from my cold, dead fingers!

As far as the “flex” on the back and the light bleed, those were both issues on my first TF I bought two months ago.  I just bought a second one last week, and the build seems to have improved!  No light bleed on mine, and the flex/squeak is not noticeable.
I implore you to buy this device, you will not regret it!!

you should take advantage of the current $100 coupon with Staples. you can get the Transformer pretty cheap if you can find it in stock.

      • TLDspectre

If Staples doesn’t have one in stock, check around. I talked to the rep at a local Best Buy (who has them in stock) and they said they WILL honor the Staples coupon for $100 off. I plan to pick one up this Thursday. And yes, the rep spoke to the manager to verify, plus I got them to sign the coupon I brought in with me so they couldn’t change their story come Thursday. ;)

        • Cknobman

I picked up my transformer for $299 from Best Buy using the $100 Staples coupon.  Called Best Buy online and they did everything over phone with no problems.  I dont recommend going to store to do this because after I bought mine over the phone my buddy went into a Best Buy store and they would not honor coupon.

As for the table it is pretty nice.  Awesome screen quality although there is some light bleed going on.

    • http://twitter.com/DrakeT3k Michael Downing

Love my Transformer…  So much better than the XOOM or the (bulky & heavy) Thrive…  ASUS has really done a great job with this product and their Skin on Honeycomb…  And the Micro-SD Card works on the Transformer…  I’ve heard there is no support for the Micro-SD card on the XOOM…

    • Anonymous

I own the Ipad and transformer and the transformer is the best tablet on the market

    • Anonymous

Get one.  Supposedly they are not as sexy as the Galaxy Tab etc but I love mine and the screen is pretty awesome.  So is the battery life.  The only thing I wish it had was USB host, but considering the Iconia Tab has that and how slow Acer is with the software updates I would rather have the Asus anyday.

    • Eric Homeier

OMG I love my transformer. For all the same reasons others have mentioned. It does EVERYTHING the xoom does and the keyboard just takes it over the top. The only negative thing is Netflix but once thats working my pad experience will be complete.

    • Mikewong27

I love it!!!  It was unstable after the android 3.1 update.. but after I reflash to stock 3.1 several times, now it’s vary stable.  No random reboots and no Sleep of Death issues anymore.  I just love it!!!  It’s much better than my Ipad 1…

  • caseyisajim

Still no Netflix support for Acer Iconia A500 :-(
