[Infographic] Comparing the Different Android OS Versions: Donut All the Way Thru Honeycomb

The folks at Tecca decided that we all needed to take a visual journey through the evolution of Android, from Donut (Android 1.6) all the way up to Honeycomb (Android 3.0).  Filled with tasty treats and a bunch of features and enhancements that iOS is still only capable of doing in beta software, we have the following infographic.

    No mention of Cupcake?

  • Fattie McDoogles

this comment thread was awesome for the first 30 or so messages… then we just had to do the IOS rules! blah blah blah nonsense. Do we really have to do this EVERY time someone mentions it? Geez what are we 6? You guys are worse than the O’Doyles in Billy Madison! O’Doyle Rules! O’Doyle Rules! O’Doyle Rules!

Where’s the Cupcake comparison? My baby Droid Eris started out with Cupcake.

interesting  opinion, however it shows a lot of innovation. Imagine what Android would be if it stayed stagnant, or if it couldn’t be run on multiple devices, it would go nowhere. The same would be said of IOS if it stayed at the original version. Now people have a choice. Do I need my phone to do this or that, or do I want to be able to signal the moon if I want to. It’s all about choice.
With Apple, you have multiple versions of IOS as well as phones too, so not exactly one device one OS. So this post doesn’t hold weight you might expect.

Remember, it’s about consumer choice, the only restriction that most of us Android users dislike are the ones carriers implement.

      • Custom Colonel

I would argue you have “no choice” at all…you’re buying into exactly what you’re being fed, which is “we’re selling you this phone, which needs a lot of work, we won’t update it, and it’s up to you to do it”.

And you guys buy it, hook line and sinker.

      • Custom Colonel

Oh and btw I just saw this.  “With Apple, you have multiple versions of IOS as well as phones too, so not exactly one device one OS”…believe me that’s not an argument you want to get into.  If we were to differentiate between OS versions, Android would be in an even more pitiful state as compared to iOS.  iOS version to version will outsell and Android version to version.  Silly example, and the Google+ post still holds

  • Erasmussen14

    Live Wallpapers arrived with 2.2

an android site that AGAIN mentions iOS???? shocking…

you guys are trying too hard

    • mbanicek

Trying to hard? Why would you leave out the biggest competitor to Android from this conversation?

      • Custom Colonel

Well, you’re not exactly talking about competition are you?  Saying “features that iOS has in beta” just sounds like you’re trying too hard.  If you wanna talk about competition, let’s talk about how many individual android phones have outsold the iPhone?  Or better yet, how many combined android phones it takes to outsell the iPhone.  Or even better still, let’s talk about how one phone commands 26% of the marketshare, and 310 phones hold 35%.

Stop trying so hard, you guys sound like the jealous brother trying to be like their big brother.

    • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

It is called page views. Sites such as these rely on adsense to get paid. They need pageviews and clicked ads to make money. When you want to crank up those views you mention iOS on Android sites and Android on iOS sites. It’s very simple really.

      • Custom Colonel

LOL…if I took that bet, I’d be an utter moron.  In fact, I’d bet that Verizon sold more iPhones than TBs, Charges and Revolutions combined.  Android needs numbers to win, Apple just needs one quality phone.

        • Anonymous

And by quality you mean simple, and can’t do much of anything special right??…

          • Custom Colonel

Yes, I mean you don’t have to hack it to make it better.  Of course when Steve Jobs tells you you’re holding the iPhone wrong, he’s an idiot.  But when morons tell you you need to hack your phone and void your warranty to make your phone usable, that’s ok.

            Lemmings.

          • Wyveryx

Then perhaps you can explain to us lemmings why “jailbreaking” the iPhone is popular? Also, this isn’t about hardware, it’s about software. Android has become a major players, regardless of what you think about fragmentation, for that you can blame carriers.
Also, how often do you need to purchase a newer model iPhone in order to get innovations that should have been included originally, though I suspect that’s because Mr. Jobs simply cares about Apple’s users and not his profit margin.
Let’s face it, IOS, though stable isn’t really anything special, it’s simplistic at best, border-lining boring for anyone with an IQ above an apple.
IOS will need to pick up their A-game and stop this, it’s my patent, and get back to the roots of invention and then there will be competition, though I suspect that many Apple Lemmings couldn’t care less, as long as they “fit” into a crowd.
I say ditch the niche and go for something that will stimulate you brain.

          • Custom Colonel

There’s quite a difference between jailbreaking an iphone and rooting and Custom ROMing an android.  If I never jailbroke my iPhone I would never have any issue with it whatsoever.  Jailbreaking simply enhances the experience.  If I never rooted and Custom ROMd my android, ha, what a joke of a phone it would be.  Rooting creates the experience.

You lemmings are sold shoddy phones, which you are forced to root to increase performance.  An iPhone works out of the box.

Steve Jobs may have told you to hold the phone a certain way, but Google is telling you to create the phone you want, we’ll just sell you parts.  And you guys open your mouths and accept like idiots.

          • Wyveryx

According to you “Jailbreaking simply enhances the experience”, then “Rooting creates the experience.”, then you claim that  your iPhone works out of the box, well so do Android powered phones. Rooting does not dictate that we need to install a Rom, sometimes we will simply remove carrier Bloatware.
I’d much rather have someone tell me to create the phone I want, rather that someone telling me I have to hold it a certain way…
Revise or reread your comments, this time they supported my argument.

          • Custom Colonel

Why do android lemmings feel that by saying “supported my argument” that that somehow makes it the case?  Your lack of reading comprehension shouldn’t be used as a weapon against me.

And now you’re trying to argue that those who root, just do it to remove bloatware?  Really?  That’s quite the reach you have there, my child.  You root, because you have to root to make your phone better.  I know it’s hard to come to terms with that, but that’s the truth.

Jailbreaking is something that is optional for a iPhone user if he wants to enhance his experience.  If he doesn’t jailbreak, his phone is not going to lag, get bogged down by bloatware, reboot randomly, restart while on calls, overheat, and die in 10 hrs.

You android idiots on the other hand have solutions for everything!  It’s hilarious.  “My 4G phone dies fast”…”that’s ok just turn off 4G and use 3G, cuz that’s why you bought a 4G phone!!!”…”My phone is overheating”…”that’s ok, just root and underclock your phone when it’s not in use, oh and that’ll save battery too!!!”…”my GPS destroys my battery”…”that’s ok, just turn off GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, mobile data, turn your brightness to as low as you possibly can, do not autosync anything and do not use your phone during the day!!!!”

You guys have to jump through hoops to make your shoddy phones last more then half a day.  Again,  I know it’s hard to come to terms with that, so I understand you fighting till the end.

          • Wyveryx

I don’t have to root at all.
Why don’t you take you antiquated version of propaganda tactics and upgrade to something better than name calling.
Seriously, you are the one who needs reading comprehension…

“Jailbreaking is something that is optional for a iPhone user if he wants to enhance his experience.  If he doesn’t jailbreak, his phone is not going to lag, get bogged down by bloatware, reboot randomly, restart while on calls, overheat, and die in 10 hrs. ”

You’re saying that if you don’t Jailbreak, then your phone is practically a worthless paper weight.

“You android idiots on the other hand have solutions for everything!

Basically the same thing you said about your iPhone… Where’s the difference you were talking about?
With Android I see options, as I do with IOS, however, since Apple has been around far longer, you’d expect that most of those problems would have been addressed by now.

And yeah, I’ll be fighting to the end. It’s my right to make sure that something I purchase lives up to my expectations and even surpasses it in the brief time before it too becomes outdated.

          • Custom Colonel

How am I saying that if you don’t jailbreak, that the phone is a paper weight?  Again, your reading comprehension fail is making you look foolish.  Go back and re-read what I wrote, slowly.  I said if I didn’t jailbreak, I wouldn’t suddenly get a lagging, bogged down, randomly rebooting, restarting while on a call, overheating, dead in 10 hrs phone.  I’d still have an excellent phone that does everything I need it to do.

In your case, you have to root to underclock/overclock, clear cache, push your own updates because the OEMs don’t care about you lemmings since they know you’ll keep buying, turn off all autosync, turn off 4G, turn off GPS, turn off Bluetooth, turn off Wifi.  Why not just get a dumbphone?

          • Wyveryx

SO that is what you wrote? I guess that you are smarter than all my friends who have never experienced this problem after jailbreaking then. And no I don’t have to do anything to make sure my phone runs smoothly.
You said enhance your experience, well wasn’t that the sole purpose of purchasing the device? If not, then it is a glorified paperweight.

          • Custom Colonel

Sure you don’t.  And no the reason I purchase a smartphone is to make calls, check emails, run apps, use GPS/Bluetooth, etc.  Not to overclock it, constantly have to clear its cache to make it run smoothly, or perform all these extraneous things on it to make it better.

Like I said, you lemmings like being sold shoddy phones and so you don’t see the problem with it.  OEMs are pretty much saying “buy this phone, we won’t update it or fix issues with it, but you can do it yourself if you like, or you can buy our new phone next year which we’ll treat the same way as this one” and you people are ok with it.  It’s sad.

          • Maverick1276

Spoken like someone who has no clue what they are talking about.  If you’re going to comment on Android and their phones, at least make sure you know what you’re saying.

          • Custom Colonel

Wow thanks for the generic comment.  Here let me try:

            Your post is dumb.

          • Maverick1276

This is why no one likes you crapple a hole junkies.  You like to sound like you know what you’re talking about and don’t have a clue.  I’ll sit and laugh as my droid x does circles around your paperwieght phone

          • Jason DeMitchell

I have an HTC Incredible 2 and by your logic Custom Colonel I would have to root my phone to make it usable. My phone actually isn’t rooted and I find the user experience far more enjoyable than that of an Iphone or Ipod. You call Android users lemmings but do you not consider that when an new Iphone comes out it typically has one maybe two feature upgrades that should have been there in the first place. And all the Iphone buyers just have to have it. Yet us Android users are lemmings. Valid point >.> If your going to troll a Android website at least use better verbiage because right now your coming off as nothing more than uneducated biased fanboy.

          • Custom Colonel

You guys are lemmings.  Simply for the fact that you will insult Apple users for the same thing that Google is doing to you.

If the iPhone is shoddy, and Apple suggests a way to remedy it, everyone laughs.

When android phones lag beyond ability to use, and overclocking and clearing cache and turning off every protocol that makes it a smartphone, you guys say that “we have the choice!!”…you guys are lemmings.

          • Jason DeMitchell

Shoddy is an understatement for the Iphone 4, your telling me that when instructed to hold it a specific way as a “remedy” that is acceptable? It’s not, not as a consumer it’s not. If any Android manufacturer did that we wouldn’t defend them nor the phone, not like Iphone fanboys do. I read your Google + post and it says that you have an android phone and you love it. If you love it why so much hate? Why don’t you stick to your Iphone because that’s where you will apparently be most happy.

          • Custom Colonel

And you’re telling me that a randomly rebooting phone is ok, just because you can root and push your own updates, voiding your warranty in the process?

Or that 10 hrs of battery life is ok, since you can just turn your smartphone into a dumbphone by turning off GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, and Autosync and push notifications?

Like I said, you guys act the same way Apple fanboys do.  You refuse to admit when something is wrong and blindly worship your phone choice.  There are idiots on both sides, but the idiots on the Android side are worse because they actually think they are smarter then the idiots on the Apple side.

          • Wyveryx

Well have to feed the troll one more time before I have to return to the real world and go to work.

Lemmings are a group that follow those ahead, even into uncertainty, most notably, death. The same could be said with those who support IOS and Apple devices, though I hadn’t mentioned them until now, you assumed I did, I was referring to the OS.
And to imply that a user is simply holding the phone incorrectly is advice is ludicriss at best, as you have mentioned it earlier as idiodic, why infer now that it is helpful.
Yeah, our choice is a lot better than one person’s vision, or in your case lack thereof. If you have had a problem with you Android device, then simply de-activate it, send it back, and get on with your life. One phones bugs do not a pandemic make.
Oh and by the way, thanks for adding to our numbers while you did have your Android device.
            Buh Bye now.
