DROID Charge Starting to See Custom ROMs, Gummy Charged is One to Check Out

The DROID Charge (our review) may not have been adopted as widely as the HTC Thunderbolt was by developers after launch, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some still out there puttin’ in work on ROMs for it.  Over the last week and a half we’ve started to see a handful or so reach pretty stable levels, so we wanted to make sure our Charge readers knew about them.

The ROM that we’ve picked to highlight is from a familiar name that you may recognize from his DROIDX days:  kejar.  He’s calling it Gummy Charged – a debloated Froyo ED2 build that has mostly “from source” apps aside from the freshly themed stock phone/contacts, task manager, camera and browser he left behind.  Looks pretty sharp to me.

Download:  GummyCharged-1.0.zip

1.  You have to be rooted.  (only way I’m finding to root is by reverting back to ED1)
2.  You have to have Clockwork Recovery installed.
3.  Once you have both done, download the file from above and place it on your SD card.
4.  Reboot into recovery, create a backup and then perform a factory reset.
5.  Select “install zip from sd card” and then choose the file you download from above.
6.  Load the file.
7.  Reboot and enjoy.

Full support can be found at this XDA thread.

Picked up a Charge today. It was to replace my wifes Tbolt. I will admit it is a little laggy when using the wiz but you can strap on launcher pro and blast away with an intense live wallpaper and this thing sails. The phone has a pretty good feel and I think with a little tweaking, it will live up to the Droid branding.

Remember folks, this is why we love Android and this website. It is all about what our phones have the potential to do, not how they shipped stock. Had that been the case, look how fast the D1 would have died. If I want to close the door on a phone because I can’t see past stock, I should have just bought an iPhone.

With support, this phone is going to become epic. The screen alone makes it worth having. Strap on some vanilla Android in a few weeks and we will have a great headliner in the Droid world.

Thought it was worth mentioning, my wife is my phone guniea pig. For myself, DX with rooted with Gingerbread and launcher pro just cannot be beaten yet. So I wait for something stellar. Until then, I am happy. I have had the D1, DEris, D2, Dincredible, Tbolt, and a new Charge. None beat my X.

        I agree!

Ummmm these are THEMED roms…..all built on touchwiz…..so those that hoped there are roms to get rid of touchwiz keep the dream alive…………. the fascinate never saw a TRUE ROM built from stock android…..everything still MUST have touchwiz, which is GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The worst of the worst…..

Stop. If you ever start a post with “Ummmm” you should just stop right there.

    • uCANTHazT3h4gees

you just don’t like touchwiz because kellex doesn’t like it so get off your knees and stop sucking his balls.  if you’ve never used it you can’t really say anything.  when i first got the phone i thought “well touchwiz isn’t bad, but let me try launcher pro” and yes, launcher pro IS better IMO; however, touchwiz isn’t as bad as people make it out to be.  it gets trashed on this website just because one person doesn’t like it.

also, you’re just jealous because you don’t have LTE on your phone

    • Emeraldjun

You have no idea how close we are to getting official CM7 support right now on the Fascinate 🙂

  • glad to see people arent getting left behind with out roms

Why would I want a custom rom when I can just get the i4 with the new ios5 that Steve showed off yesterday ? 😀

    • Craigg

Because the ICrap is outdated. Even with new software it’s not a global phone, it doesn’t support LTE, it doesn’t have a very good radio, and it will never even come close to the new generation of dual core processors. IOS5 is finally delivering what Android has had for two years. Good luck but if you want fans you should troll on the Apple forums.

      • Davros

Dude, I agree. Thats why I photochopped my Gingerbread screen onto stevo’s iphone. Check out the picture. He might as well call it iGinger or something 🙂

  • Craigg

The Droid Charge is actually not a bad phone after it is rooted, the lagfix is installed, and the bloatware removed. The phone is fairly quick with Quadrant scores in the 1500s. The camera is as good or better than anything on the market. The only complaints in reviews were that it is made of plastic. I don’t see that as an issue at all as the front is almost all screen like most Android smart phones and if you scratch or crack the back you can replace it for $7.50 direct from the Verizon website. The only weakness I have found is that the radio quality is not as good as the Motorola Droids. If you use this phone in fringe areas you might not be happy.

  • Me

I am sick of these custom ROMs. Just give me a damn android phone that just works, and not have to install any custom ROMs.

    • Boston

      you really are an idiot

      • MFG

No he’s not. I like installing custom ROMs as much as the next guy, but some people just want their Android phones to work. Let’s be honest, a lot of Android phones come out of the box running like shi*.

        • Anonymous

Then don’t buy one 🙂  That’ll leave the rest of us more to enjoy.

          • STiK

Glad to see the Android community fighting like morons once again 🙂

        • every phone ive bought worked dont know what your doing wrong

    • If you don’t like flashing your device, follow the crowd and get an iPhone.

I myself have a HTC Sensation, and can’t wait until I can start flashing ROMs on it.

  • And THIS is the reason why I’m picking up a Charge tomorrow. 4G has just arrived in my area, and Kejar is one hell of a dev!!! Whenever the Bionic and SGS2 decide to bless us with their presence, I’ll switch. But until then, its GummyCharge time =)

  • I would like to point out my affection for your generosity for visitors who need help with this niche. • Stephen D

You shouldn’t have bought a phone with a locked bootloader.

  • Is this thing had an 8mp cam, I would have picked it up.  The wait for my next device continues…

    • It DOES have an 8mp cam…did you read reviews?

  • Goblueboy

If gummy charged is anything like Gummy jar was on the droid x then that should be one hell of a custom rom.

    • Adam Metzner

Liberty spawned from Gummy Jar, so this is only going to get better I would say
