Verizon Private Sale for $99 Thunderbolt Lasts Through June 12

On Friday we’re received a tip from a reader who was invited via text to an exclusive sale from Verizon that would give them the opportunity to purchase a brand new HTC Thunderbolt for as low as $99.  There were no details on why they had been invited to this event, but according to the email above that we just received, it’s for Big Red’s “most valuable customers.”  We were thinking it was regional at first, but this looks more like a long-time, multi-line customer sort of thing especially when you see the subject of the email titled “Your loyalty is about to pay off.”

Talk about a steal of a deal, right there.  If you are in the market for a new phone, this price might be worth a mention at your local VZW store.

Cheers David!

  • Mike

the $99 price is for chicago residents only not california…..california only gets $50 off which sucks so its still $200 bucks thats not a sale to me at all

  • Harrise3

The loyalty discount applies to the new every two grandfathered contracts.  If you haven’t upgraded in over two years or so you are eligible for the upgrade if you had upgraded sooner it could be $50 or $30 “loyalty” discount.  I tried two verizon stores and neither would budge

I’ve been with Verizon for 9 years and have had countless phones, my most recent was an HTC Incredible on launch day paying the full retail of over $500.00 to have it the day before launch.

Well, today I received my THIRD (yes, third) replacement phone for the same random rebooting issue that I’ve had from day one. I take excellent care of my phones, understand the OS, and have an extensive background in tech devices – not to mention a degree from PSU in information systems – so please, give me the benefit of the doubt that I’m not ‘breaking’ my phones.

The third boot looped from the first touch of the power button. I called customer service with a mission to get this deal or a NEW Incredible for all my trouble. HA! The BEST they could offer was a refurbished Droid X if I paid for the battery and the back cover for about $40. The lady responded to the $99 like I was asking for a loan on a BMW or something – I could hear it in her voice. I was disgusted. I will admit I should have asked for a supervisor but honestly, why should I have to? Don’t you think a FOURTH replacement on a phone I was loyal enough to buy day one was enough?

Replacement four arrives tomorrow – I told her point blank if it doesn’t work then they lost my business for good. It’s even more frustrating being as I live in western PA in an area dominated by Verizon (especially in the more rural areas) and any other option is most likely going to be lower quality network wise – and maybe they know it.

I’ve stood up for this company for the last time.

We got our mailing via physical snail mail. Our “private sale” was the TBloat for $199.99 plus a $50 loyalty credit, but only for the main line. Not sure if that “loyalty credit” is the same as the $50 “new every two” credit that we already accrued, or if they’ll stack, or if they’ll just ignore it all together. There were also several cheapo free phones, but I think those are the same as the free phones on the VZW site. (I did not bother checking.)

So all-in-all my review of the “private sale” would be “What a crock of shite!” … But kudos to those who did nab the $99.99 price! I would have loved that.

No $99.99 Thunderbolt as far as what Verizon says: http://theurbanblend.com/main/tub-blog

  • DJyoSNOW

I just called customer service and was denied the $100 loyalty discount (in addition to the $50 private discount)  he said it was probably the Chicago IL, area which I’m 4hrs away from…BOO TO YOU TO.  I would rather go with the Charge but a $99 price tag I would suck it up…BUT NO  I wonder if I can give the rep the sale number lolz  all I’m trying to do is give them my business and plan on stick around for at least another year.

  • Jothen2002

Thank you for Droid Life community. I just scored the TBOLT for $99.00 It was definitely a process…but they even waved my 20.00 early upgrade fee.  Sweet! So now having rocked the OG for two years its time to start exploring the wonderful world of TB custom ROMS any suggestions out there? Which ROM are you using for the TBOLT…?

    • kingofthething

Can’t go wrong with BAMF, the dev knows what he’s doing and is really up to date…usually an update every week.

Your best best is to look through the Thunderbolt xda forum, if your not a member then sign up, its free and worth it.

This is the development thread of the tbold xda, this is where you’ll find everything you need to know about custom ROMs on the tbolt:

Got this email with other offers on other phones. Not really impressed with what it out right now. Looking for the next Nexus device though I’ll miss Sense. Wonder if the battery issues of the Tbolt are a cause of the price drop to get more people to buy it and on the unstable 4G?

I got the offer, but I’m not about “upgrade” to a phone that has to be charged several times a day.

My spouse and i were now contented that Edward could round up his investigation through the entire precious recommendations he had through your web page. It’s not at all simplistic to just choose to be making a gift of ideas that many most people may have been selling. And now we fully understand we have got the website owner to be grateful to for this. The main explanations you made, the simple blog navigation, the friendships your site make it easier to foster – it is most extraordinary, and it’s helping our son in addition to the family do think that situation is cool, and that’s wonderfully serious. Thank you for all the pieces!

This is for the customers who’ve been around Red long enough to get phone updates, anything less than a year w/Red can not get these phones.   I am a qualified customer w/ an excellent record but not w/Red for a year yet.  Oh well. My DX & I are quite happy w/each other.

  • http://anonymous-x.live.com anonymous-x

Is it time to change from my DX to the Thunderbolt w/another new contract?

  • DasNOOB

I got the e-mail… by my loyalty only dropped the price to $199… lame.

    • Rambo76098

      Same here :(

      Same here.

  • Eddie Valdez

My Dad and I got the same private sale. We just don’t have the loyalty discount in the picture above.

  • http://twitter.com/jdawgc jdawgc

Obviously Verizon does not consider a 10 year old account holder (with four lines) a valuable customer. No private sale invite.

Crazy for a phone that was outselling the iPhone to have its price dropped by 50%. What is really strange is the iPhone has been out for about 2 months longer and it is still the same $200. l guess that made up story about Tbolt outselling the iPhone was complete garbage.

    • Anonymous

It’s not necessarily garbage.  The iPhone never drops in price (except for rare third party retailer exceptions) until the new model comes out.  The pricing is dictated by Apple directly.  So even if the iPhone was selling horribly, Verizon couldn’t drop the price on it in an effort to sell more like they can with any other phone.

Maybe Verizon just went into the charity business

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

No, it’s just a free market. Competition. Capitalism at work. Customer is winning. Something that could never happen when a single manufacturer is controlling everything.

  • Immolate

I got the email and mailer for this. Been with VZW for eight years, five lines, four smartphones.

So this is for a new two year contract or an upgrade right? If it was without either of those things I would buy it in a heartbeat! Stupid effing contracts.

Well this just made me decide that I am DEFINITELY getting the Tbolt

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000475533643 Geoff Atteberry

I just took this deal.  I’m not a huge fan of the Thunderbolt, but for $99.99, I figure if I can’t live with it, I can easily sell it and get my money back.  I really had to work for it though.  I received a flyer for the “Private Sale” earlier this week, and an email (but not the $99.99 email).  But when I tried to order online, discounts were not showing up. Not even the $50 discount.  I called VZ, and after 45 min on the phone, I managed to get them to give me the $99.99 price. Winning!

    • Anonymous

I may try asking for a manager on the phone if I’m unable to get VZW to give me this price in store. Sometimes the old saying is true, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease”. Good for you though!

      • Inkster09

Wow 99.99 for a feature phone smartphone great deal. Especially outdated software

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000475533643 Geoff Atteberry

yea, like I said, I’m not much of a fan for the Tbolt.  Going back to Froyo after running GB on my OG Droid is gonna suck…. but for the price, I figure I might as well try it, and I’m getting sick of hitting the wall on my Droid… I am a power user, and I’ve been feeling the pinch from the OG’s limited RAM and internal storage for quite awhile…

Geoff if  you’re thinking about selling your new Tbolt, please drop me a line I would be interested in buying it from you.  You can email me delanocathirell@gmail.com  Let me know :)

          Hi Geoff,

I wanted to follow up with you from our previous emails regarding the
possiblity of purchasing your Thunderbolt. As I recall you were offered the
Tbolt from the Private sale for 99.99.

Please let me know if you’re still interested in selling your Tbolt. Thanks
          Geoff :)

What exactly did you say?  I tried the store and also threaten to leave for sprint and no dice.

      • kimani

You have to call it in.

    • kimani

I got mine a couple of months ago under the same premise. They sent me a pamphlet in the mail. It was $149. I had to call it in and be on hold for a while while they checked the offer but they did send it to me. I pay the same for my 4G as I did for my 3G. Pretty sweet offer. And a sweet phone. Believe me when I tell you that it’s fast. The screen is nice and big. Battery life not that great but it’s easier to deal with when you can download 150 mbs in 90 seconds.

Well, I am planning to use my wife’s upgrade (since she doesn’t want a new phone) to get the T’bolt next month. Then I read this post and notice that the deal expires 5 days before the eligibility date. So, I called VZW to see if I could get the date moved up.

The girl on the phone said it would be no problem to get the date moved up, but that she was unable to get the promotional pricing to go through on my account. She apparently tried to trick the computer into giving me the discounts by putting the promo code in manually, but no go. She said that when she checked into it that it is only available to certain customers in certain areas and I didn’t qualify. Best price I can get is the normal price on contract, $249.99. That’s no deal at all!!

One thing she told me to try was to print out the picture from this post and take it into a store. She said they have the ability to give better deals than she can and that they are often competitive enough to price match an offer if I bring it in. We’ll see.

    Anyone who have any suggestions?

    • Anonymous

I hate to turn you away from the TBolt.  I got one and I’m stuck with it now.  The 4G LTE and speed of the phone is incredible. The screen is very nice looking too. However, here are some of the set backs I face with this phone.
      1) Re-boots – ever since the update the phone randomly reboots and Verizon offered me a refurbished phone but I just can’t accept that.  No other options were given and the children employees they have working there are punks with no class – Orange, CT
      2) GPS does not lock on to your position quickly – takes forever on Google maps and the Navigation app never locks on – it’s useless.
      3) Video camera: some clips have sound some don’t. It’s a crap shoot – I never know when it will work or not.  Videos are smooth and vivid though.
      4) Camera – blurry pics, constantly trying to focus, beautiful in sunlight, terrible in dim light and dark.  Enough said.
      5) Heavy and thick – I can live with it but a chick with small hands might think otherwise.
      6) Here goes – battery – I know, it’s a broken record but also a reality.  I got the 1600 battery to replace the stock 1300 and still needs to charge at work and when I get home.  It last about 3-5 hours with moderate use and no charging in between.  I can live with it question is can you?

Outside of these shortcomings the TBolt is a great Android device.  I can accept some flaws but when you take away functionality I get frustrated and wish HTC was more sure the device was ready to launch.

      Good luck

      • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

Just my 2 cents: I have TBolt and I have NONE (well, except for the size of the phone, but it’s no issue to me) of the issues you described above. Maybe you got a defective one and you should replace it?

        • Jothen2002

Hope I get one of your bloodline phones…I just ordered…

    • Granted

Yeah I have a very good suggestion, if you were able to get a rep on the phone to promise deal or feature for you, always make sure to get their full name and see if they can send you something in writing that is signed. Because those morons at Verizon won’t honor anything you’re told over the phone, I’ve tried and they didn’t even attempt to honor what I was I told by a customer service rep.

Basically that’s just a good practice to employ in any dealing you have with a business, when you’re speaking to someone on the phone, always get their full name at the very least and maybe their employee number or location.

Received the same text on Saturday myself.  For what it’s worth, I have a single line, and I’ve been with Verizon for 2 years.  I was an Alltel customer that was part of the merger, so if they count my years with Alltel, that bumps things up to 7 years.  I’ve been sitting on an upgrade for a couple months.

I and my pals were studying the nice techniques found on your web site and at once developed an awful feeling I had not expressed respect to the website owner for those tips. All the boys ended up as a result glad to learn all of them and have quite simply been enjoying those things. Many thanks for simply being very thoughtful and for figuring out these kinds of fantastic guides most people are really desirous to know about. My very own honest regret for not saying thanks to you earlier.

Been with verizon since before they were verizon,  have 5 lines on my account.  one line due for upgrade 2 weeks ago.
Last week the Thunderbolt was showing up as $149.99 upgrade price,  now it hows as $199.99 as upgrade price so price actually went up.

  • allan

Do they really know off the bat that you don’t have that promotion ?

  • Anonymous

Hmm, loyalty? Well my family has been with VZW since ’88 or so…yet I’m getting stuff from at&t big time. Even BlackBerry sent me a questionnaire to find out how they can serve me better? I remember a few years back VZW had that VIP program, where we’d get about 20% off accessories and such…well that got tossed and now they want to honor their loyal customer again? Ok we’ll see next time I go in to the store…

  • Anonymous

I have 5 lines on family plan, 2 of which are Android phones. I’ve been a VZW customer for 10+ years. I’ve not received anything about this special sale.

    • http://profiles.google.com/brian.santero Brian Santero

Yeah, our family plan is exactly like this. We haven’t gotten anything, meanwhile I have friends who get sent these special private offers having been customers for only over a year. Sigh.

  • Phyrxes

I got a different private sale mailing, after walking in to the Verizon experience and asking about it the sales person said they saw such discounts on my account.  Guess I’ll go back to waiting for the Bionic.

    • Phyrxes

      Edit: No such discounts.

The sales person said it was like it was just something to get me in the store.

Wow! I’m surprised an actual employee verified that a company was using unethical business practices, that is absolutely a first.

Have had my line since 1998 and have got nothing, but the 50 off for the Thunderbolt,  Their contract time must be up, because VZW told me that next month when my two years comes up I’m entitled to another $100 plus any loyalty bonuses I have coming.

  • http://twitter.com/NeeksTweets Eden
