DROID Charge vs. Internal and External Competition, Plus Official Specs

We broke news earlier on the DROID Charge having the ability to connect up to 10 devices through its mobile hotspot app, but we’re back with more.  Been wondering how the device compares to the competition both inside and outside of Verizon?  Above we have the battle between it and the Inspire 4G, Atrix 4G, myTouch 4G and EVO 4G.  And below, we have the Charge compared to other Big Red devices like the Thunderbolt, Fascinate, DROID 2 Global and i*hone 4.

“Virtual QWERTY” across the board. ARGH.

  • http://twitter.com/corysumsumsum Cory

the atrix has a ffc and the HTC mytouch 4G doesnt run motoblur…

  • Anonymous

This chart is incorrect in two places. The Atrix 4G has a front facing camera, and it has Swype installed on it out of the box.

  • Ms.Carmen Diva

I kinda like the charge…..Still waiting for info on the play

    Use T-Mobile® G2x™ with Google™ by LG instead of the my-Touch 4g for comparison….pretty impressive for a T-Mobile phone…

  • Anonymous

Not sure why all the hate for this device .. it has nice specs and it is inline with other devices coming out. Touch Wizard or Blur.. they both suck! Not sure dual core processor is even going to be a good trade off for battery life. I am certainly going to give it a serious look… my wife owns a Fascinate, so I know the history. However, I know Verizon’s too and I blame them(not Samsung) for the lack of upgrading. Who the hell sticks Bing on a Google powered device in the first place. It’s like buying a six pack of Budweiser and sticking 1 Miller in there!

  • sickorwuut

atrix does have a front facing camera

th mt4g came out in nov its hardly a year old.

i cant wait to drop this tbolt the speaker is so low and the screen is washed out next to my friends fascinate. and it doesn’t work when i hook it up to my car and im on my second one! come on Samsung im counting on you…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Diane-Wilson/100000516108141 Diane Wilson

The benefits of choosing the Droid Charge over the Tbolt are as follows… much better screen much louder and clearer speaker for listing to music, watching movies, YouTube and speaker phone, Bluetooth that will actually work out of the box and an aux connector that actually work and better battery life….coming from a TBolt owner who is hoping and praying that this handset comes out before my 30 days are up…

    • Ant

you are aware that it is a 14 Day return policy, not 30?

      • Rbess1965

Depends on where you buy it. Verizon is 14 days. Amazon and Wirefly are 30 but you have to carefully look at the fine print about returns. If it has any little thing wrong with it, you could end up paying full price for the device.

    • Anonymous

Speaker is plenty loud on the tb. Not to mention most likely you wont get updates with samsung. Also samsung usually doesnt have the best call quality I had multiple samsungs and they all were awful with call quality.

  • pickle3782

2GB onboard memory? really? 8gb should be standard onboard size for these phones, even with 32gb sd card

  • Rbess1965

What is the meaning to the RAM/ROM spec? The Charge 512 RAM and 512ROM while the Tbolt only discribes RAM?

  • Total Telecom Consulting

This phone is no better than the droid x…. theres nothing amazing here.. 1ghz processor, 512mb of ram which in hilarious,, and froyo 2.2? WTF, AT $299! for what?!?!?!?! And Samsung build quality sucks

    • Anonymous

Same with the Bionic .. nothing amazing either.. dual core = terrible battery and I just say “no” to moto Blur!

  • Morales Carlos5

Is it me or does anyone notice the major fail in the mytouch 4g UI. Htc with motoblur? Totally unheard of lol

  • Droidz

Nothing like comparing yourself and brand new phone to sh*t that came out a year ago huh? How do your specs compare to LG Thrill, Evo 3d, and HTC Sensation?… because that’s your competition in 2 months.

  • ApplesNAndroids

What is Apple UI? Last time I checked my iPhone is running iOS.

In all seriousness, only way I’d buy another Android device right now was if a phone like the HTC Sensation, or a Nexus device came to VZW. I really wish the Thunderbolt had the Sensations spec list. Hell, I’d even take the Nexus S by Samsung even though I absolutely hated the fascinate. Always thankful for our developer communinties though:-)

    • Anonymous

Yes! I hate my Droid X and Motoblur, out dated or not i’d take a Nexus S 4G over a Bionic.

      • Total Telecom Consulting

        Then root the damn thing!

    • Anonymous

iOS’ UI is developed by Apple, therefore it is an Apple UI.

Anyone else LOL at the Simultaneous Voice and Data being Yes (4G Only)? That basically means know. Hell, they might as well have said Yes (On Wi-Fi).

Completely unenthusiastic for the DROID Charge. Wow, a 4.3 Galaxy S with LTE. Thunderbolt stomps it in almost every way. And it doesn’t come with Bing, right?

    • Rbess1965

If I remember correctly, the Bolt did not have Bing. It had a Google search bar on it.

      • Anonymous

Yes, the Thunderbolt has Google search but I was talking about the Fascinate, just worded last post awkwardly.

  • Rbess1965

Hey, what’s the dual core thing do for you anyway? That Tbolt was processing things way faster than I could humanly go myself. It would talk and surf, transistion through applications like butter and since I don’t have 4G in the area yet, on Wifi I compared it to my wifes DroidX. I got over 10gb down while hers only got 1-2gb. The thing is super fast, so what does the dual core thing do that would convince a person to wait for them? Just curious. Thanks

  • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

Wow vzw needs some more dual cores asap!

  • Fyrmedic654

But alas…its still from sammy anf e all know the updates are virtually nonexistant

    • Rbess1965

Any thoughts on that slow updates situation improving on this one because it’s a Droid branded device?

I really am in the decision stage with intent to order one or the other as soon as I get to check out the Charge and make a decision so I’m lobbying for all the info I can get:) Originally like the idea of the Charge because of the HDMI port and finding out that the Bolt I got didn’t have the other things listed on my earlier post really made me want to see the Charge. Now reading all this from you guys about the slow updates coupled with a higher price tag, definately has me on the fence. Decisions, decisions:)

      • Anonymous

The Samsung Facinate did not get updated to froyo 2.2 and a lot of people blame Samsung. However, its amazing that every carrier except Verizon who put Microsoft Bing vs the standard Google search engine on the Galaxy S phone didn’t have any problems getting updated. IMO this wont be the case with the Charge which has been branded a Droid phone. Other than the lack of update my wife, who owns a Samsung, loves her phone and has not had any problems with it. My 2 cents.. hope it helps.

  • Angry Turd

I’m still waiting to upgrade til a quad core phone comes out with 6G. In the meantime, I’m still using this…

    • Missthetrain

Yep, 6G is just around the corner.
You do know that as soon as you walk out the store, 7G is ready to rolls…right?
Or just be safe and get the 3G *phone 102 with facetime instead of the 6G HTC/Samsung.

  • Dj

there are phones that came out last year that have some better specs then this phone or did it take them that long to come out with this phone ..lol

  • Mr. Joe

Did vzw just call HSPA+ 3G?

    SNAP!

  • Rbess1965

Also if VZW doesn’t include a 32gb card and lower the price from 299.00 at launch, I’m going to forget about the lack of NFL thing on the Bolt and reorder it. Had it for about 10 days, saw that the Samsung was coming out so I sent it back to give the Charge a look over then saw the rumored price tag. Ouch. I can tell you that Bolt would fly. Borrowing a BB Bold right now and really really miss that screen now.

    • Kevoskee

It won’t be an NFL season anyway :)

  • Rbess1965

The Spec I’m missing is Price. And I want my NFL:)

  • Jorge89

How old is the mytouch 4G a year? lol why not compare to current phones like LG G2x?

  • Anonymous

These charts always have incorrect information.

    • Anonymous

We agree again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can we just cut the crap and be friends?

  • Anonymous

i think it was engadget that had a chart out comparing the dual core phones out and expected to release soon…

what surprises me is NONE of these phones have Gingerbread on them…. and I know that the HTC Sensation and Galaxy S II phones, as well as a few others are supposed to drop with it.

  • Anonymous

I don’t understand where they are hiding all of the Gingerbread.

    • Anonymous

      On XDA.

  • Anonymous

Who has 10 devices to connect at once?

Thunderbolt specs still look better. Until the Bionic comes out… If it comes out

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KNPHBJ2QK6ZZ744UYQQX5SRMAU James

hey i didnt know the mytouch ran motoblur! lol

  • Mth2134

And the benefit to getting this over the tbolt????

    • Mth2134

      *is?

      • Suga Shane

        Great save.

    • DBK

Better hotspot and a version of skype that works?

      • Coaster36

Better hotspot? Who would even tether 8 connections?

Skype that works? Skype doesnt work on the charge either. It isnt even out yet. Its only time before skype works on the tbolt. It wont take long.

        • DBK

          Most on here would.

Agreed on skype. I was just joking. Deep breaths….. :P

          • Chuckj24

Skype works on my bolt….what issues are you all having?

    • Coaster36

not a damn thing. Get the tbolt.

    • Anonymous

better screen, better gpu probably? Other than that I can’t think of anything.

  • DBK

Uh oh, another chart……. *looks around nervously*

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

Specs still disappoint. Really hoping Bionic isn’t canceled, but it only has a VGA front cam compared to this 1.3 MP front cam on the Charge.

    • Cactus Jack

the Atrix looks like it has the best specs yet!

      • DBK

Which means that the Bionic has the best specs yet. :)

        • Cactus Jack

If it ever comes out, that is :)
Still holding onto my OG Droid… waiting for the next breakthrough phone!

A major spec that the bionic is sorely lacking at the moment is “existence”.

        • Chuckj24

A major spec that the bionic is sorely lacking at the moment is “existence”.

      • Atrix84

Sadly its ruined by motoblur…there isn’t a noticeable performance difference over the inspire or thunderbolt

        • Anonymous

How fast do you expect it to be? It’s still limited by the solid state memory speeds as far as launching apps goes.

          • Atrix84

I’m not complaining about speed…I’m just saying for dual core there isn’t a performance difference over the tbolt and inspire; its just not there…maybe its the ram in those htc phones that speed them up

          • DBK

Or it could be that the OS isn’t dual core friendly yet. When IceCreamSandwhich comes out, those dual cores will be put to work.
