Quick Tip: Install APKs Easier using Dropbox

If you’ve ever been unable to download an APK file straight to your Droid or didn’t have a USB cable handy, one of the easiest ways to get that file to your device is through Dropbox.

Instructions…

1. Download and install Dropbox from the market. (It’s free)
2. Set up an account if you do not already have one.
3. Download a file on your computer and upload to your Dropbox account.
4. Open the Dropbox app on your device and login.
5. Browse to the folder you just uploaded your file to.
6. Tap on it to download.
7. When prompted, click “Install!”

I think ES File Explorer is more handy. I love Dropbox but with ES File Explorer, you can just share a folder with your Android phone and put everything in there. Essentially the same as Dropbox but instead of uploading to Dropbox and then downloading to your Android device, you can just connect directly to your computer. Only downside is that you gotta be in the same network.

Does this imply that once you've downloaded an APK file you can move it or even delete it?

You can put it in the dropbox folder on your computer, and then when you open dropbox on your phone, it will let you download it from their secure servers directly to your phone. If you're done with the item, simply go to Astro – Sd Card – Dropbox – delete from your sd card. What this is doing is allowing you to transfer items to your device without having to hook up your cable. As of right now, there is no way to remotely delete the item from your dropbox account, but hopefully they will include it in the future. I use it all the time, which is why I sent it in

Even easier: Just add http://qqrr.it/ to the beginning of the URL of the APK, and then scan the resulting QR code with your phone.

but what if you've already downloaded the apk. I find myself downloading those all the time from my computer and just dropping it in the Dropbox folder. keeps them handy when i need them on the go.

Another implementation is the Rom files for gbcoid or nesoid. they dont unzip properly on the phone and I have to use my computer either way. this just eliminates the need for my usb cable, mount the sd card, open folder, drag and drop, unmount, wait for the card reader check for errors etc.

Yeah, a QR-code doesn't do you any good once it's already on your computer. But I figure most people are downloading things rather than having them laying around on their computer, so I posted another option As for myself I set up dropbear (included on cyanogen's roms) so I just scp things over to the phone.

I use APKget, so I can install from emails. Download apk to computer, email it to yourself and off you go. Acts as a backup as well.

Never used this untill today, this thing is pretty sweet. Instant uploads to and from my droid. Soooo much easier then hooking up my dang usb cord and mounting every time i want to move files.

I just use download crutch lite, free from the market. it allows you to download ANY file to your droid. it doesnt have desktop to phone functionality, but i think email is faster than dropbox anyway.

Get a zip program like winzip to unzip file and install. Also check rooted section here for proper rsd file older version will not communicate with droid
