Guide to Rooting Android 2.1 on a Motorola Droid

It’s about time we revisit the whole “rooting Android 2.1” issue since I still seem to get daily questions on whether or not it can be done.  In fact, this post will act as the one-stop shop for gaining root access to 2.1 rather than the few posts we have separated throughout the site which are inter-linked and seem to be causing some confusion.

First we need to continue to clarify the rooting process.  At this time, 2.1 has not actually been rooted.  Let me repeat that:  Android 2.1 has NOT been rooted.  The process highlighted in this post is simply a way to get you from stock non-rooted 2.1 to a rooted 2.1 ROM.  If that doesn’t work for you, then do not proceed with these instructions.  There is no way to simply take your current phone /2.1 OS and gain root access to it except through use of the Android SDK which is a different process for another day.

Now read the warning below and we’ll jump right into this…

*Warning* – The process we are about to layout is extremely risky.  If you choose to do this, we are not liable should you brick your phone or cause any sort of permanent damage.  If you do harm to your phone, please do not email us asking for help as you have already been warned and accept all risk involved. Cheers!

Full rooting instructions after the jump!

*Note 1* – So we are clear, this is for Motorola Droid users running stock Android 2.1.  If you are running 2.0.1 or rooted 2.0.1, this process is not for you.

*Note 2* – This is for PC users only. I’m sure it can be done on a Mac, but I have no way of taking you through that process.  Feel free to ask in the comments though as one of our readers may be able to help you.

*Note 3* – This will not work on the Motorola Milestone.

STEP 1:

Flashing SPRecovery onto your device:  The first and most important step is to use a program called RSD Lite to flash/install the SPRecovery image onto  your phone.  This recovery will replace the stock Android recovery image and allow you to install a 2.1 ROM with root access.  This step does not root your device, it simply allows us to install a ROM that has superuser/root access included.  Make sense?  Proceed.

How to Install SPRecovery…

1.  Download the SPRecovery SBF file:  SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf
2.  Place the file somewhere other than your desktop.

DO NOT RENAME OR ATTEMPT TO UNZIP OR ANYTHING.

3.  Download the correct Motorola USB drivers and install to your PC.  (32-bit)  (64-bit)

32-bit for a 32-bit Windows OS and 64-bit for a 64-bit Windows OS.  To find out what your Windows OS is, go to Control Panel>System and it will tell you.

4.  Download and install RSD Lite 4.6.  (Download Link)
5.  Once you’ve completed steps 1-4, you can follow the video instructions below or skip right to step 6 to complete the process…

6.  Connect your phone to a USB and your PC and turn it off.
7.  Open RSD Lite (run as administrator).
8.  Slide open your keyboard, hold up on the d-pad, then the power button for 5 seconds and release.

Your phone should then boot to a black screen which is your bootloader.

9.  Click the … next to the filename box and browse to where you saved the SPRecover_ESE81.sbf file.
10.  Double click and open the file.
11.  Click “start” and allow the SPRecovery SBF to flash.  This should not take long.
12.  Allow for your phone to reboot and for RSD Lite to show that you are 100% and completed.
13.  Close RSD Lite and disconnect your phone.  You now have SPRecovery installed on your Droid.
14.  Proceed to STEP 2.

STEP 2:

Installing a 2.1 rooted ROM:  This final step involves flashing/installing a 2.1 ROM with root access onto your device using SPRecovery.  For these instructions, we have chosen a stock 2.1 rooted ROM, but you can go straight to a custom ROM doing this same procedure if you’d like.  Instructions for that here.

How to Install a 2.1 ROM Using SPRecovery…

1.  Update and backup any files you wish to restore, this will wipe all data.
2.  Download this file to your computer:  ESE81update.zip
3.  Once you’ve completed steps 1-2, you can follow the video instructions below or skip right to step 4 to complete the process…

4.  Rename the file to “update.zip”

MAKE SURE IT’S NOT NAMED “UPDATE.ZIP.ZIP” or the process will be aborted.

5.  Place the update.zip on the root of your sdcard.  (Meaning not in a folder)
6.  Reboot into recovery mode (hold the power and “x” button at the same time).
7.  Using the volume up/down switch highlight “Wipe data/factory reset” and select with the camera button.
8.  Choose “Wipe cache partition.”
9.  Choose “Install.”
10.  Choose “Allow update.zip installation.”
11.  Choose “Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated).”
12.  The update.zip will now be installed.
13.  When it finishes, select reboot.
14.  When your phone boots up, you will have to re-add your Google accounts.
15.  You are done.

You now have a Motorola Droid with a rooted 2.1 ROM installed.  If you would like to change to a custom ROM, I highly suggest that you download ROM Manager from the market.  It will give you various options and will also simplify this process.  You will also find a bundle of videos on how to use ROM Manager in our Root(unlock) section.

Other Info:

HELP please. I did everything right, up until putting the ROM “update.zip” file. Everytime i try to install it in the recovery screen, it says E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory). Installation aborted. I've tried about 4 different ROMs, and still the same thing. I made sure the file name wasnt “update.zip.zip.” Any suggestions?!

  • AlexM

alright my computer cant figure out what to do with the sbf. file and the link for the motorola usb driver thing doesnt work all together… wtf!!!!!!

    • Chris Nimon

Just tried these. When you download the sbf file, you dont try to open it, just save it on your computer where you can find it easily. Save the appropriate usb driver to your computer, double click it and your unzip program should open. just click “extract to” then just click “ok” and it will make a new file automatically. keep at it, ask questions when you get stuck, usually someone will answer. It's definitely worth it in the end. Make sure you have an unzipping program, if not you can download winrar (free at cnet i believe)

      • AlexM

        thank you!!!!

        • AlexM

alright now when i select SPRecovery in RSDlite nothing happens, my phone is connected and is displayed in port no. 1. whats wrong???

          • Chris Nimon

after you connected phone to computer did you turn it off? Then right click on rsd and select run as administrator?

          • AlexM

thanks, figured it out and im now happily running a cyanogen mod with 2.2!!!!

          • Chris Nimon

Congrats. Its much quicker than before isnt it. And CM6 is real smooth.

  • Rmtoberman

There was a pause in the video to reactivate the phone (time of 5:54 on video), what is this about. If its a company phone is this something I can do?

  • dr0id

My droid is about 25% faster now thanks to rooting + CPU overclock prog. Sweet. Droid does, bitch.

    • Chris Nimon

get a froyo rom and a 1-1.2 Ghz kernel and it'll be about 375% faster

  • onemotodroid

Do not put .zip on your file – you will get an error – do not make this mistake follow the direction and everything will work GREAT!!!

  • Nmishol15

I did this … worked perfect! thanks droidlife!!!

  • Jaustin1530

Hey guys im thinking about rooting my froid however I dont want to have to re DL all my apps. I know a couple of people have mentioned to backup using ASTRO not sure if that works well.I also noticed that on the recovery mode screen there is a backup option. Can I use that before wiping my phone. Thank for the help.

  • jonesboy6

This is obviously not a good site if your looking for answers to your problems. I think I'll go elsewhere.

  • Ktruba

    Hey,

Okay for the life of me I cannot get RSD lite to recognize my phone is connected to the computer. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit, and yes I downloaded the correct drivers. I unzipped em and placed the file on my desktop, installed em, everything went smooth said they were successful, I restarted as well.

I tried running RSD lite by “Run as Administrator” as well as just regularly opening it. When I hold up on the d-pad and power it says USB connected, and even the computer says “drivers installed”, or “Motorola Inteface” etc….

I'm really at a loss for whats going on, is there any other idea people have talked about that I have not seen looking through these comments?

    • ktruba

I also installed the files after I unzipped/extracted; and I do apologize if this topic has been beaten to death.

    • Ktruba

I also tried “Clean Only”, “Update Drivers”, as well as “Clean and Reinstall” – no dice so far; after I try the clean only and reinstall once I plug my phone back it my computer says updating drivers and also says “Motorola Flash Interface” installed.

That happend the first time, and then again after I cleaned the drivers and reinstalled them.

  • Jpwomble6

how can i do this on windows xp pro 2002 because i have to open each file with a certain program it wont just open.

  • Nick

does anyone know why rsd lite 4.6 wont even open on my computer?? it jus simply says windows cant open this kind of file/:

    • Nick

Correction, for some reason it now says that its not compatible with 64-bit versions of windows but isnt kellex using 64-bit?? why isnt mine working!

      • Rexdog1888

You need to install 7-Zip file manager.

  • Brich66

Ok, next stoopid question. have dl'd ESE81update and renamed. Have absolutely no idea though how to produce and access the folder (which I guess contains my SD card info) that I'll need to drag this newly renamed zip file over into. Not to pick, but, the end of the first video leaves me on the recovery screen while the second video has me choosing mounting options from window's that aren't popping up on my droid once I connect the USB. Sorry for such lengthy post. Please help. Thanks.

  • Brich66

I'm such an idiot….please disregard earlier post. Trying to be soooo careful…I had dl'd RSD Lite…just failed to install it..duh..ya, i guess that would help. :-/

  • Brich66

Am such a noob…have followed all video directions…am at point needing to flash over sbf file. Running Vista IE8, Getting message from MotoConnect icon (bottom taskbar) reads on scrollover:Phone USB mode not supported. Please change to a supported mode. Also, am unable to open sbf file…after double-click, pc informs me doesn't recognize sbf file type and is unable to open. Please help. Thanks.

  • jonesboy6

Ok I installed Motorola drivers and flashed sprecovery and went step by step with the video to install ESE81update.zip. Install seem to go just fine.I went to reboot after install according to step 13 and the round Motorola logo comes up and freezes there. I have pulled the battery and rebooted 4-5 times and everytime it freezes at the Motorola logo. HELP!

    • jonesboy6

      Somebody? Anybody? Kellex?

      • jonesboy6

        Anybody out there?

  • Drea13

A little help please I rooted my phone this past friday using the standard ESE81update.zip… Everything on my cell phone seems fine except one thing. I am showing on my contacts list that I only have 118 contacts despite the fact that I have well over a thousand. the contacts will display if someone texts or call me or if I text them. However if I need to call a contact that is not on the list of 118 it does not show… has anyone else run into this? PS I am running dejaoffice as well.

    • Louka1992

usually your contacts get backed up to your gmail account…

      • Drea13

I do the backup through a third party program called dejaoffice cause I link my android to outlook. like i said the contacts are there but they are not showing on my contact list at all so programs like bump dont work and if i need to make a phone call i have to go through dejaoffice. its weird

  • xMABERx

keep getting error in SP recovery while on step 11, 12 error is E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) I have checked and double checked update.zip is on root of sdcard…

  • droid.does

Im new to all this, but after research and video….I pretty confident I can do this. Only problem Im having is, when I download the RSD_lite program, im stuck? dont know to open or save? Ive tried both. I open, but dont know what to open with? I save it, and then when I try and open it, I have to open it with something? I tries the moto driver? but dosent???? Any help, would be appreciated

  • Nick_d73

My phone says installation aborted? am I supposed to do anything the the es81update file other than rename it to update.zip? It has a different icon next to it on my pc than it does in the video? this is really frustrating.

  • ScruggsN9

i finally broke down and decided to root my droid but in process of doing so ive come across a problem.the RSD Lite file doesn't seem to download..ive tried it multiple times. it downloads in a way but when i try and open it it brings up the file as if its trying to download it again, and it continually does this over and over….what should i do?

  • Ttstorm02

Having a problem can someone help? I am getting all the way to the “Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated) step and I click ok then it says ” install from sdcard… finding update package…opening update package…E:can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted can someone help?

  • DAve

seems pretty easy. How long does it take?

  • The_Other_Ray

Well, I finally mustered up the guts to root today and thanks to Kellex's easy to follow directions, I rooted my Moto Droid 2.1 with BB v1.1. Overclocked it to 800 and wowsers!! It feels like I got a brand new phone today. It's super quick and so far so good except that I can't get Barnacle WiFi Tethering to work.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or what settings I'm supposed to set in Barnacle. I enabled WEP, put in a 13 letter password, inputted the password into my laptop, got connected but going nowhere.

    • briderx

Congratulations.. Just install “Wireless Tether for Root”.. It's free, and painless. Works amazingly!

Also, don't press the power button and the volume up/down or camera at the same time.. All the “random reboots” everyone gets is due to this.. You have to install Root Explorer, go to /system/bin and delete the file called “shutdown” – Will fix ANY AND ALL random reboots in Bugless Beast.

  • Louka1992

I am having problems with this file RSDLite_4.6.rar.
When I download it, it comes up as a media file with nothing to play.
    What am I doing wrong?

    • The_Other_Ray

Not sure if you resolved this issue but you can download a free program from Cnet.com called “WinRar” which will unzip that file so that you can then run the MSI file to install the program.

  • Ford5pt0

Ok i see how to backup certain things, but what about paid apps? I see you cant get future updates after you root, can u just reinstall these apps since they are already paid for and get updates? Can u reinstall all your apps after root in the market to get updates again?

  • Ford5pt0

I would like to know how you get all your stuff back after you become rooted. Cuz you have to wipe/data which puts it back to stock, anyone?

  • BoilerUp

2 months ago I successfully rooted my moto droid, however yesterday after flashing newest clockwork i got stick in boot loop got past the M but is just stuck at the red eye. I was able to run rsd lite and got through the process where it starts to reboot the phone, it goes throught the percentage done progression and never loads past the red eye. It then tells me to manually restart, and in order to do so had to do a battery pull and after 2 minutes it is still stuck at the red eye. Please help

    • Andrewlbaird

boot into clockworks recovery and restore any of the back ups you have made.

  • Richwilson2

do i need somthing to oped the RSD lite file becuz it wont let me open it and idk what to do

  • Richwilson2

it ont let me open the file do i need somthing to open it with??

  • I can basically fallow all the steps, but I am having a little problem with activating my phone. I might sound like a newb but the only way I know how to activate a phone is to go to the Verizon store. Is there another way?

    • Andrewlbaird

Dial *228 on your phone and that will connect you to reactivation on your phone. Follow the steps there. Make sure you have good service as well. If that doesnt work and your phone cant be activated, use your rooted phone and connect to wi-fi. Then download rom manager from the market. Then go into rom manager and click download rom then click cyanogenmod then click Radio Update (C_01.3E.03P). this will install a new baseband. When you reboot your phone you will still need to activate it. dial *228 again and follow the steps. If that process doesn't work then you should take your phone to verizon.

  • Genep

I downloaded the SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf and I'm a little confused on were it went. I can't move the file if I have no idea were it is. Please help. I really would like to root my phone.

  • Dawn

Did everything… When I tried to Start the SPRecovery in RSD it just said Failed flashing process. (0x7100)………. Tried moving the file to the root of the C drive as people suggested. Still wouldn't work. Now, I just want to give up and try later (maybe). How do I get out of the Bootloader screen? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Dawn

Nevermind… Got out of the Bootloader screen. But, I still want to root…. How do I fix the failed problem? It just immediately failed when I started it..

  • Davidcbahr

What does he mean in Step 2, point (1) where he says “1. Update and backup any files you wish to restore, this will wipe all data.” What kind of data will be wiped specifically?

    • Andrewlbaird

All contacts will be wiped and all apps will be wiped. All pictures, videos and other sd card content will not be touched. You can re-download apps but you may want to go into your gmail account online and add all the contacts in your phone that arent already in gmail to gmail. takes a while but its worth it. Also all facebook contacts can be re-synced no problem.

  • VanessaRenee

Hi… I followed all the directions and got the superuser permissions, but when I try to flash clockworkmod recovery it says: an error occurred while attempting to run priviledged commands!

    Can anyone please help me?

    • VanessaRenee

Also, when I go into about phone, it says build number ESE81, but it doesn't say by Pete. Did I do something wrong? Please help

    • VanessaRenee

Also, when I type su into terminal emulator it says access denied. Does this mean I am not rooted? I am not sure what I did wrong? It shows superuser permissions on my phone?

  • Bubweiser21
    • Bubweiser21

also my phone is in bootloader screen… any help please…

      • Bubweiser21

i am doing everything right idk y this is not working… i extracted the files with windows 7… that is the same as unzip the file right? the folders are “unzipped” now

        • Andrewlbaird

Yes you have done everything right except for when you “extract” or “unzip” the motorola drivers file you must then install them on your computer.

  • Rshim09

I did everything and got superuser permission. However, when i try the “su” thing on the terminal emulator, it doesn't show anything. Does this mean I'm rooted or no?

  • Kfath1978

well I have been trying all day to download ES81update.zip from megaupload and I get to about 9% and it stops. Eventually it times out. Running Windows 7 on desktop. Also your website runs s l o w! I am really second guessing this whole rooting thing and completly pissed off right now.

    • Andrewlbaird

Thats your computer. Not this site and not megaupload. Go to a different computer and come the this post and try again. Happened to me.

  • WOO I AM OFFICALLY ROOTED! WORKED GREAT! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH! 😀

now for you guys that couldn't get RSD to work. Download Winrar

(really wish i had known about that sooner.. wouldve saved me alot of time and freaking out)

  • Mike

Okay, here's my problem. When I turn my Droid off, and then turn rsdlite on, it doesnt seem to find my phone!! I tried multiple times but am not getting anywhere. I read below that you need to unzip some folder but I wasnt too sure. Please help!

    • Andrewlbaird

Make sure you have the drivers (1file in link above) downloaded, extracted using winrar, and INSTALLED. If you are running windows 32 bit you can download winrar here: http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR-32-bit/3000-225… if running 64 bit then you can download it here: http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR-64-bit/3000-225
Download and install winrar then go to the drivers file and double click it. this will bring up a winrar window in which you can doubleclick the file again and extract it. now intsall the drivers and try again.

  • Relezra

hi, the rsdlite gives a “Fail” message.
    any solution?

  • Bstr

This is the best and easiest to follow instructions for rooting a Droid with 2.1. Videos are great. Thanks for the help!

how do i get back my contacts and apps? please someone help me…:(

    • Andrewlbaird

Re-download apps and put contacts back in manually. Now that you are rooted make sure to periodically make backups using rom manager to insure you wont have to do this again. Also back up contacts to gmail. When you enter a new contact on your phone it automatically syncs to gmail. Al other contacts that were on your old phone and got transferred to your droid at verizon will not be auto backed up and need to be manually put into gmail.

i have milestone how to root it to work flash on milestone

  • Kswallace87

the link up top for RSD Lite 4.6 doesnt work, Wat can i do? can i get this program somewhere else? plz help…

  • Andrewlbaird

i cant flash the file over. i have all the drivers installed but am still having problems. help?

    • Andrewlbaird

solved the problem by using a windows 7 64 bit and following the step exactly. the only thing that may differ is when you name your update to “update.zip” you may have to just name it “update”. thats what i had to do. the “update.zip” gave me an error. just “update” worked fine.

  • Kswallace87

when I try to install RSD Lite 4.6. from here it doesnt let me! Please help me…

  • guest

OK I'm a big nub, but isn't following this youtube video with DM-updater a hell of a lot easier?? Someone please tell me if theres something I'm missing here…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAi–u4y61Y&feat

  • otter34

Ah what the hell? I clicked on allow update.zip installation, then clicked on ok to install /sdcard/update.zip (depreciated)

It says install from sd card…
    finding update package
    opening update package
    verifying
    e:can't open /sdcard/update.zip
    (no such file or directory)
    installation aborted

OK now what do I do?!! I made sure it was in the root of my F: drive on the computer, which is what my phone is. Give me a step by step on how to get out of here and what to do please!

    • Andrewlbaird

      1. Plug your phone into your computer.
      2. Mount sd card.
      3. Go into your phones sd card files.
      4. Find the Update.zip you placed on there.
      5. Rename “update.zip” to just “update”
      6. Unmount sd card and reboot into recovery.
      7. Hit allow update.zip installation.
      8. Hit install sdcard/update.zip
      9. Let me know if this helps! 🙂

HELP!!! I need some help with why it's not working for me. I hook up my phone to my computer, turn my phone off, then do the bootload thing with my phone. Then I run rsd lite as an administrator and my phone is not showing up in the rsd lite, I even try to put my phone out and back into the bootload setting and it still won't show up. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions???

    • Kyle

Nevermind…I just didn't install the drivers the right way.

  • KSelby

I need some help. I plug my phone into my computer, turn it off, then bootload it. Then I open rsd lite while run as an administrator and it does not show my phone in the list. Why is it not picking up my phone? I have done everything that they told me to do in the instructions. HELP please!!

    • Kyle

Nevermind…I just didn't install the drivers the right way.

  • Justin

I followed the directions exactly and getting the following message:

    E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
    (no such file or directory)
    Installation aborted.

i don't know what to do and i checked everything at least 10 times. I'm feel like i'm gonna pull out my hair

    • The same thing is happening to me.

    • Stun13

This happened to me just now. I think it was because I didn't properly unmount the SD card before rebooting. This is what I did to fix it.

      1. Hit the power button until 'reboot the phone' is selected.
      2. press the camera button to reboot
      3. once it is booted up connect the USB
      4. Mount SD card
      5. copy update.zip to SD root again
      6. go to the home screen
      7. slide the top bar down and disconnect SD card. This properly closes out the SD card.
      8. Reboot into SPRecovery and try again.

Once I did this it worked for me. Good luck!

    • Andrewlbaird

Try mounting your sd card to your computer and renaming the “update.zip” to just “update”. Now go into recovery and try and install the update.zip again. Worked for me. Some computers realize the file is a zip file and add the .zip automatically. So even though you named it “update.zip” it might actually be named “update.zip.zip”. Let me know if this helps! 🙂

  • otter34

I'm starting the rooting process, but got stuck right away. After reading and understanding more than I did last week, I started the process

I have a problem right away. I download rsdlite onto my desktop, but how do I install it? It saves the file or program to my desktop, but it's not a .exe file. It's a RAR file, opens w/ unknown application. What's next?

I have WINXP, service pack 3

I tried downloading from 2 different sites and get the same result

  • Kaufkin

Font question: between the color and font size, I have a real trouble reading the screen in the … bootloader (??) … the step where you pick the file to udpate, etc, etc… with the new process and apps, how much mucking about in those screens is necessary, or is it mostly now automated?

    thanks!

Kaufkin, rooted on 2.01, went back to stock, now re-considering…

  • dark

    phones says it requires activiation?

  • Serioucesam

I did this and successfully rooted my droid and even went to 2.2. but i dont like 2.2 so how would i go back to the stock 2.1 root? can someone please help me? i search everywhere already sighs.

  • Bobby1204

Need some help plz. When i try to install the update.zip file i am getting installation aborted it says E:can't open /sdcard update.zip no such file or directory. plz help.

Ironically. My STOCK Droid goes into Bootloader mode AUTOMACALLY if USB is plugged in while phone is off. No special key presses.

  • Tbarret66

i have sprecovery on my droid but it won't read any update.zip files. HELP!

  • rpjoneswsu3

Just finished rooting and got bugless beast working. Could not be happier with my decision. Everything went so smoothly

  • Reignreapsow

everytime I hit start in rsd 4.6 it says failed process what next

  • rpjoneswsu3

So if we want to back up all our data and apps… Do we download titanium backup before we do step 2? How on the first step of “step 2” it says we can backup all our data and files. How do we do that? I finished the SPRecovery stage and wanna get a custom ROM on this baby!

  • bobby

AAAHHH! everything worked great and i was psyched…..
but when i tapped superuser permissions the app was just a black screen!

does anyone know what to do?

    • At23520

thats where your “rooted only” apps are. when you get some of those, they will be in there instead of the pull up menu

      • bobby

thats a relief to hear that I did it correctly, but how do I get it to work then?

        • Sean

that shows you all the apps that currently have super-user permission. unless you run setcpu or root explorer or some SUed app, it will be empty (black).

  • rpjoneswsu3

I have been going back and fourth on whether to root or not for the past couple months since I got my droid. I finally made the decision that I want to. I have watched all the videos a number of times and feel confident. But maybe this is a dumb and basic question, but when I download SPRecovery and RSDLite, they both ask me to choose a program that created the file. You can choose either the internet or a program from your computer. I have no idea what to choose. I choose internet and it just brings up a web page. So basically I dont get how to open RSDLite

    • rpjoneswsu3

ok nevermind got RSDLite running. But now my droid wont show up in the RSD program when I connect it to my computer and open up the program

  • Jas

when i hit on install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated) ….. it says installation aborted..y?

    • t0ni

u probably named the ese81 file to update.zip just rename it update, and try applying it again.

  • Bacardiman04

running windows 7 64bit..phone is in bootloader and connected to computer. RSDlite shows the phone connected and SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf file selected, but nothing shows up in the “file properties” and “start” button is not highlighted….help?

    • droidaholic

mine did the same thing i tried to pick the file again and the start button showed but no file properties. i went ahead and hit start and everything went fine.. it almost impossible to screw up anything. the only thing u could do is screw up your recovery with really isnt that big of a deal because it can be changed

      • William Delannoy

I'm having the same problem as Bacardiman and I haven't been able to figure out a fix. Any advice?

        • droidaholic

U could try reinstalling RSD Lite. if that doesn't work then im not sure.. u could try asking kellex. im sure he knows something. good luck

      • SamG

i have that problem only when i try to do what you said it doenst help? any advice?

    • I am having the same problem. I am using 64-bit windows 7 with proper motorola drivers and administrator account. Droid goes to bootloader screen just like in the video, i hit the 3dot search button and find the .sbf file downloaded from above, and no description comes up and the start button remains unavailable for use.

    • cgibney

Put the SPRecovery file in the root directory of C: (e.g., C: )
I had to do that before it worked at all.

  • John

I need some help please. I download RSD lite and try to run the program and it asks me to choose the program I want to use to open the file. No option to run as an administrator… Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    • John

Never mind, just found an earlier post that answered this.

    • t0ni

      download winzip.

    • Seancollinduffy

  • Dennis25

What is the difference between actually rooting the phone and using the 2.1 rooted Rom? As in, is there any downfalls to not actually rooting?

  • Chrisbjorge

maybe a dumb question but do i download the sprecovery file to my phone or t my comp.
    thanks for your help.

    • t0ni

      not dumb. to your computer.

  • Sshsjd10

Can anyone help me get the File Properties to show on the right hand box in RSD Lite when I try to open SPRecovery?

  • Mavrik2569

For those of you receiving the status 25 error: extract the 3 files from the froyo update to a separate folder and name it what you want (mine was droidlifefroyo), then copy that folder into your nandroid folder (make a nandroid folder if you dont already have one). then start up sprecovery, backup/restore, advanced nandroid recovery, choose backup, select the folder you just made, perform restore. my version of winrar did not show paths of files in the zip so it was a bit misleading. good luck!

    • Mavrik2569

make sure that only those three files are in your folder and not another folder in side that one.

  • Sshsjd10

When I am running RSD Lite I get to the bootloader on my phone and it shows up in RSD. But when I open SPRecovery none of the File Properties appear and the Start option isn't available to click either. Any Answers?

  • DeanONH

Ok, I've got a rooted 2.1 on a Droid. It's my 1st rooted version. I'm getting ready to go to Froyo. I have several questions and assumptions I'd like you to verify:

    1. Apparently the procedure to root 2.1 is different from the procedure to root previous versions; hence the use of ESD Lite rather than DroidMod, etc. Is this correct?

    2. Rom Manager can handle 2 different ROM image formats; Clockwork & SPRecovery. These images are recovery program dependent and are not interchangeable. Rom Manager can flash either the Clockwork recovery or the SPRecovery loaders, but only custom build Clockwork image ROMS..

    3. I use SPRecovery or Clockwork Recovery to back up ROM images. Can Clockwork back up an image loaded by SPRecory & vice-versa? I would assume, yes.

    4. I use Titanium Backup Prem. to backup apps & all their data. RIght? The only exception are apps contained in the ROM image itself.

    Thanks,

    Dean

  • Pkwicker

I got to the point that I was able to load the SBF file into RSDlite, but, when I pressed the 'start', it said the flash has 'failed'……

    what do I do now??

  • Alfonzumab

should you backup before rooting? Can someone explain why and how to do this (nandroid?)

  • Tlyons31

i am not seeing my phone pop up on the rsd lite. i get to the part where i open it up in boot loader but it does not pop up on rsd lite. anyone know why? i downloaded everything, and did it exactly as they said. 32 bit system, 32 bit file, got the rsd prog and the usb drivers installed on the computer. does anyone know why it might not be working? do i have to install the file on my phone before i do this? i heard him say something about that in the video. pls help

    • Christianromo8

i had the same problem, the motorola file has to be unzipped lol

      • Tlyons31

i did, hit clean and reinstall too it removed and reinstalled all the drivers. still nothing.

        • Mth2134

You guys….Not to be rude but if you don't know about unzipping maybe you shouldn't be rooting….There is a LOT more after you do this that raises the potential of damaging your phone…I'm here to help if needed.

      • Austinleonhardtsemail

how do you get it unzipped?

  • Christian

so if i just want to do this to root, but i dont want a 2.1 rom do i skip step 2? because im trying to use this for 2.2

  • mikeranucci

it says at the bottom that installation was aborted but it's still loading. what does that mean?

  • what are the steps to root using a mac?

  • Do i run the motorola drivers after i download it? because maybe thats why i cant get RSD to work… pls help

    • Did you follow the video really really closely???
Are you sure you have the right drivers? We'll get you through this lol

      • I cant install the stupid RSD lite. It just keeps tryin to open thru windows explorer. Yeah i caught myself on that. I installed the motorola drivers but im stuck on the RSD lite. i've tried to download it like 10 times and it trys to open thru internet explorer and just wont work.

  • I can't even install the stupid RSD lite. I download it then windows tells me that it cant open. i downloaded it in explorer.. didnt work. then in firefox.. still didnt work. WHAT THE HELL

  • steve

I think you need to add a big disclaimer not do this if you live off Verizon's network. I live in Alaska and Verizon uses ACS towers and network.

So anyways, I cannot activate my phone. I am now stuck at the activate your phone screen and cannot get past it!!!!!

    Ahhhh

    Any help?

    • steve

When I first bought my phone, I was of course, in the lower 48 and was on Verizon's network.

any help so I don't have to mail my phone to a friend in the lower 48?

      Thanks

  • Flyinion

Anyone find a fix for the “instant fail” when flashing SPRecovery? I can not get this to work on my Win7 64bit system and tried both the 4.2 and newer 4.6 usb drivers. I can mount the phone just fine and see the SD card. I start up RSD Lite in admin mode which is installed to d:motorola<etc><etc> instead of the default program files (x86) folder.

I have tried putting the sbf file in multiple folders on both c and d with and without spaces or anything in the folder name and the only way I get file properties to show is if I put it in c:. Then when I go to flash because “Start” is finally not grayed out, it does the insta-fail.

I had to resort to using my 32bit Vista laptop. It works but it's not the way I'd like to do this. I guess once I get the update.zip part finished it won't matter anyway since I'll be using ROM Manager but it would be nice to fix this if we have to use this method for something in the future.

  • mikeranucci

when i go to run RSD lite it says to choose a program. what program do i use?

  • Tony

    SPRecovery says
    E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
    (no such file or directory)
    Installation aborted.

I have double and triple checked that correctly named and in the right spot (directly on the sdcard) and still no joy. Help please…?

    • Tony

thx jaywatson changing “update.zip” to just “update” worked

      • Mr_amerka5601

        still getting that same
        E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
        (no such file or directory)
        Installation aborted.

I keep trying to do this, but every time I go back in, the .zip file is gone. Then I transfer it again and get the exact same result…HELP! starting to freak out…

      • Blkmontgomery23

ive tried just the update is their any other advice ive even downloaded everything over again and still aborts

  • jaywatson

Had an issue with renaming to “update.zip” would abort. Please rename “update” only. Worked fine after that small change. Job well done!!!

  • cduce2411

IF YOU GET STUCK AT THE DROID EYE: Go back to SPRecovery and press reset to factory default. It worked perfectly for me!

several questions before rooting 2.1 : ( really excited about wifi tethering )
1- will I loose all aps and information that goes with them while rooting?…basically having to start over with downloads?
    2-if so, how do I make sure I don't?
3-will I loose all corporate email setup?

  • Jonathan

How can you test to see if the wifi is working? Also I can't get my contacts from facebook. I try to add an account then it just goes back to contacts.

  • JaMa

    Noob Q:

Ran the steps for SPRecovery flashed, and got no problems, but when installing the update I get:

    Extracting System Files…
    Installing Bugless Beast…
    Install Almost Done…
    assert failed: write_raw_image(“/tmp/boot.img”,
    “boot”
    E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
    (Status 7)
    Installation aborted.

So what does this mean? I tried using “update.zip” and “update” -without the .zip, but they all give me the same above status 7 error. What am I doing/not doing?

    • Zexepyon

im having the same error on my droid with stock 2.1 anyone else

      • 7gowner

I got a similar message. It said aborted and my root never completed. Now im back to stock still.. I wonder whats happening here….

        • Mike

I got the same thing. It said installation aborted….crap

  • voke

The warning says this is for android 2.1 but mine says I have 2.1update1 will this still work?

  • StevieV

I can't get this done. I've done everything in exact order as described. When I go into RSD Lite, I click the '…' and choose the SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf file that is in my C: directory. The file properties show up, but as soon as I click start, the status message says failed.
I've triple checked, and even re-downloaded and re-installed my drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. I've set RSD Lite to run administrator every time I open it, so now the only issue is actually getting the phone to flash.

Any help is greatly appreciated, either here or to my email [email protected]

    Thanks.

My wife got an Incredible… I was jealous.
I got Root on my Droid… I am happy again.

    Thankyou Droid-Life!

    • I feel ya. my brother just got a Evo, i am so jelous, so now i want to root my droid but i am terrified. lol. any suggestions 😉

      • EC8CH

Dude, if you have an EVO I don't know what you have to feel jealous about…
what a couple months then maybe.
For rooting info on the EVO, all I know is I'm the wrong person to ask. I'm
barely a beginner at rooting the Droid. I think I've heard that the EVO has
already been rooted, and that a version of 2.2 is available for it. Look
around, I'm sure you'll be able to find the info you need if you're
determined to root your EVO! Good Luck, and congrats on getting your EVO
        before they sold out!

I’m a complete noob with stuff like this. I’ve had my moto droid for about a month now and I just had a few questions about rooting/2.2. If I were to root my phone now while I have 2.1 would I be able to download 2.2 once the source code is released and have my phone stay rooted? or would 2.2 cause it to become unrooted? Thanks in advance guys and I must say I love the site!

For Step 1: part 10, I double clicked the file and it opened up, but the information to the right didn't come up, and the start button was still unclickable. I tried redownloading the file, but it didn't help. Also, the file is set so that it opens with Motorola SDL. I don't know if I have to change that. I didn't save it on the desktop as instructed and would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

If the start button is grayed out, move the SBF file to the C: directory. Worked for me!

  • Roland Stone

I get stuck at Step 1 Step #12. RSD Lite says I'm 100% but never gets past “in process”. It never shows “completed” and it tells me that if I close the program I risk damaging my Droid. I closed anyway w/no apparent damage, and tried moving SP Recovery SBF to the C:/ but got the same result. How can I tell if SP Recovery is properly installed so that I can move on to Step 2?

  • Ryan Mitchell

hi, i got to the part where you put the sbf file into the rsd. i have my phone in bootloader but i click start in rsd and nothing happens. and nothing happens when i click device either. so i have no idea whats wrong. i downloaded everything from this page. so im at a standstill to what to do. i even rebooted my computer and that didnt work. when i downloaded rsd, a message came up saying to get the most recent drivers which i did for my 32 bit windows vista laptop. but it still says that even when i uninstall rsd and reinstall it. so im confused and feel like im just spinning wheels here. any help would be awesome. just reply back to my email. thanks alot

Not sure if this will help, but have you tried installing the 64-bit drivers?

  • Tareq

I spent a 30 minutes now reading comments! I can see a lot of people are having problems and no one is helping them, unfortunately I am not rooted but I want too, however I am scared now! I saw many comments asking: If I root would I lose my apps, contacts, pictures etc.. no one replay!
please Kellex (or anyone know about this matter) help us!
1- top 3 custom roms to begin with.
2- would we lose our apps etc?
3- do we need to download WINER from cnet ir winrar is enough?

please help to keep this post alive.

    • LJ5625

      Answers:
1 – Most people are using Bugless Beast v1.1, but there are numerous options out there.

2 – You can back up your apps by downloading Astro File Manager from the Market. Once downloaded, open it and tap your device's menu button. Choose “Tools,” then “Application Manager/Backup.” Select the checkmark option that allows you to mark all of your apps. After that, simply tap the “Backup” button on the top left of the screen, and you'll be set! This process backs up your apps to your sdcard for safe keeping. Once you install a ROM, your apps should load automatically.

3 – Winrar should be enough. It was enough for me.

Yes, you can. I have Barnacle myself.

    TIPS!!!!

Tips for the not-so-tech savvy (like myself) on rooting your moto droid 2.1 (in conjunction with Kellex's instructions).

Kellex did a great job, but I ran into some hurdles during my rooting process that you all might run into, as well. I rooted using Windows XP (2002; 32-bit).

    1. First of all, don't freak out on Windows not being able to open the SPRecovery file or RSD Lite file. Just download Winrar at Cnet, and you'll be just fine. Winrar allows you to open AND THEN INSTALL (don't forget this step) the RSD Lite program onto your PC.

    2. After downloading the Moto USB drivers, don't forget to INSTALL them onto your PC, as well. This is crucial because RSD Lite will not recognize your mobile device (i.e. will not give you “Connected” status”) via the USB cord.

    3. This tip is regarding Kellex's STEP 2 sequence of instructions of installing Peter Alfonso's stock 2.1 ROM, specifically step 4. I, like some others on this forum, had to rename the ESE81update.zip file to simply “update” (without the .zip). The first time I tried to install with “update.zip,” the process was not completed. After the rename, it worked peeeeerfectly. By the way, I had to replace my old “update” file on my sdcard (when I pushed the Android 2.1 update manually two months ago) with the this new “update” file.

Those were about the only snags I hit during this process. Again, I'm not the most tech-savvy, but I'm also not a noob.

I hope this helps some people who might have the same questions/struggles I had!

And don't be scared folks! I know this can be an intimidating process (it was for me, at first), but just follow Kellex's instructions to a 'T,' and you will come out unscathed.

Thanks to Kellex and the forum for helping me with all my concerns about rooting, and keep up the great work Droid Life!!!!

P.S. – My ROM of choice is Bugless Beast v1.1 at 1 Ghz with Smoked Glass. And combined with LauncherPro, my phone is all types of fast!

    don't be scared
    thanks and highly detailed

  • girlymissjulie

I can not get the Motorola drivers installed on my PC. I tried the link here and they wouldn't install, so I went to Motorola's website and downloaded the newest drivers (4.6) and tried installing them and got the same thing – it says “The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character” and then aborts the installation. Does anybody have any idea what would be causing this? How do I get these drivers installed??

HELP ME PLEASE!!! Im trying to root my 2.1-update1 and I seem to be having trouble opening the RSD Lite 4.6 on my labtop…its giving me the option to open it up with some other program on my comp. or an option that takes me to some wierd ass website that I guess would help me open it but I have no idea what I would be doing on the site…if anyone knows what im talking about and can help me please do…thank you in advance.

    • aczm1988

Well First off to root 2.1 you have to go back to 2.0.1, technically there is no official “root” for it. But anyways i went here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-… they have everything you need to get the job done.

  • 3jcalm

I hate feeling like im missing something but Ive read through the entire thread and havent found the answer to my situation:

rsd lite fails to flash the SPrecovery file within a fraction of a second of pressing the start button.

    • aczm1988

If your already rooted use rom manager from the market to install sprecovery its alot easier. Although this was easy too double check your steps and watch the video again i did it with no problems at all.

  • Got SPRecovery flashed. When installing the update I get

    Extracting System Files…
    Installing Bugless Beast…
    Install Almost Done…
    assert failed: write_raw_image(“/tmp/boot.img”,
    “boot”
    E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
    (Status 7)
    Installation aborted.

When I reboot the phone I can go through getting the phone setup again. I check the app drawer and I have super user. I installed terminal emulator, but when I try to open it I get force close. How do I know if everything is good? Any help would be great.

  • lee

so what do i do if i remaned it incorrectly?

I've been doing the Droid exchange route with Verizon because I've had totally crappy voice quality with everyone one even after doing the supposed fixes. I'm on my last one before I switch to an Incredible. The last one just came today and I'd like to be able to make a total duplicate of the one I'm sending back to put on the new one. I've copied over my entire SD card, used MyBackup Pro, Astro, etc, but I never get an identical image when I restore it. I lose my Helix Launcher screens I setup and my iMobster account that is all built up! I heard NandDroid will let you do this kind of backup but here's my question… Will doing this method on the phone I want to copy from, not give me my identical copy because doing the rooting will wipe all the save files, etc because to make a identical copy I would have had to already have it rooted and setup like I wanted and then have made the backup I needed with NanDroid?

UPDATE: SOLUTION TO 'FAIL' PROBLEM WITH RSD LITE = Put the SBF file in a different directory! This worked for me anyway; it appears the Desktop is not the only place that creates problems. I had it in my Downloads folder, and apparently that stops RSD Lite from working too. WTF? I put it in C:/ root and it worked.

      • racyn27

ok i got to the part where it flashes the phone and it says rebooting the phone powers up then rsdlite tells me to manually power up the phone I do then it says 100% executed but it still says in progres in the status. so I restart it and it still asks me to power up the phone manually. no change in status or anything. Help!

  • jizzoizzm

wen i do all tht im told and showed, all goes well untill i double click the file while in rsd and nothing happens…plz help if possible…

  • awefawf

should i use nandroid to back it up?

  • Bako Bitz

Finally got this done and am very happy, although the overclocking directions here are confusing. As far as I could tell, through ROM Manager, there isn't a way to install overclockable kernels through the stock rooted 2.1 rom in this tutorial. I only did this for overclocking, and was surprised that the link on that subject led me to a tutorial that assumed I had installed a Cyogen rom.

I tried using the Rom Manager kernels as explained, but they caused a permanent hang on the stock rooted 2.1 rom. Had to do another update.zip restoration (since I had no rom backup) and re-activate the phone from scratch again.

It would be better if this tutorial either (a) directed you to a means of overclocking that DOESN'T involve having to install a custom ROM, or (b) just went ahead and directed you to put Cyogen's latest rom on your system.

  • kingblood

No matter what i do, when i try to install a custom rom it aborts and says it cant find the file. ive made sure the file is on the root of the sd. ive trieda good 10 times and have the same result. pleasee help !

  • racyn27

I have tried this a couple of times on two different computers. On one computer when I am on RSD lite the SPRecovery_E81.sbf shows up in the file properties section so I can hit start and load it to my bootloader. The only problem is that my phone doesnt show connected to the RSD lite program while the bootloader is up on my phone. Then on the other computer the phone shows connected but when I select the SPRecovery _E81.sbf the info doesnt go to the file properties area so the start button doesnt become available for me to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have rooted My moto Droid phone to the stock with root and everything went great but I cant use !!!! car home !!!! it force closes and when I try to install Google maps the install is always unsuccessful. Is there a fix for this or will I lose these features with root. Also tried Bugless Beast and same result with no car home and cant install google maps. Everything else went smooth including over-clocking, custom roms install, Kernal install, and backups. I studied the process for about a week and seen nothing on losing the navigation.

Have you found a solution to this (not being able to use Car Home and Google Maps? I have the exact same issue! I have reached out to some folks on other forums. If I happen to find anything out, I'll reply back to you with the solution.

  • Bako Bitz

Well, I ran into the same problem lots of people seem to have here: No 'file properties' on the SBF file, and a 'fail' whenever trying to start the process in RSD Lite. All the drivers are correct and installed (Win7 64) and I've tried it on my other computer as well. Lots of people have commented about the same problem, but I haven't seen any helpful suggestions for what to do to fix it. So much for rooting, I guess I'm back on the fence!

    • Joshua

Sounds like we might be having the same problem. Have you found a solution yet? I wonder if it has something to do with the 2.1 update. Did you wait for the OTA update of 2.1 or did you do it manually?

my rsd lite is not recognizing the file properties in the window on the right. Its showing device properties in the window on the left. Is it the .sbf file or my rsd lite?

    • Adam

You need to put it in a folder with no spaces in the path as mentioned above, like C:

OMG, I've had my droid since the first week out back in nov-dec and i wait patiently for the updates to roll out, only to be like “is that it”. well, I finally took the leap of ROOT and I must say the instrutction was very well put together I didn't have any problems. only a couple of things I wish I would have done: made a backup of my Password Keeper setting and password, lost everything. made a list of all my applications before the wipe. other than that im running the bugless beast and it's crazy fast.

nevermind i just had to name it update with no .zip. thanks!

  • Clinton

i need help:( really dont unstand why but when i go to run the update in sprecovery, it says the file doesnt exist. is there anything i need to do to the file once i download from this site? i did exactly what you said, didnt put it in a folder or anything. just downloaded it and through it on the mem card. one thing i did notice though. when i download it, the icon is that of a commpressed zip folder, it looks like a folder with a zipper going down it, now when i watched your video, the icon looks like a a few books stacked on top of each other. what should i do?

  • So the SPRecovery file….does that save my phone's life if I were to (gulp) brick it during this process?

  • Brettski

Can anyone tell me where to get ahold of Ultimate Droid v7.8. And would it work with the process done above?

  • jafar78

This is an amazing tutorial. I followed and my Droid is now rooted. One quick question: Can you point me to a doc on how to install apps on the SD card instead of the internal mem. Again, what a fantastic job.

  • When you say this will wipe all data, does that mean my entire phone will be reverted to it's out of the box settings? Including all apps, pics, and music? Sorry, I'm a noob, but I think it's time to root.

  • ryanwalter

i just rooted and succesfully installed (or flashed) the clockwork mod (or whatever the basic rom manager rom is), then went on to get bugless beast (i believe i chose the 1.1 ghz kernel and smoke glass). did its thing, but when i went to reboot it keeps looping the moto screen and not getting on to the droid eye (or freezing in the middle of boot, and other renditions of NOT BOOTING). help please…

  • DeJecT

Hey Kellex, Where did you get the black widgets? like facebook, and news and such…

  • I followed the instructions, and now I'm having a problem reactivating my phone. It tells me to make the call to activate it, but then it tells me that it can't do it at this time. Should I try to activate it online? It also tells me that I can call from a land line to some number or try again later, but I don't want to call a Verizon representative because I figure they'll start asking me why I need to reactivate this phone and I won't know what to say. I know that my phone is on a roaming tower from where I am because I get a triangle in the top bar indicating that I'm roaming.

I would really like to get my phone activated as soon as I can. Does anyone know why I might be having problems reactivating and how I could get it to reactivate without having to tell Verizon that I just voided my warranty?

    • Nevermind, this morning I had no problem with reactivating.

  • DeJecT

    Quick question.

Could one go back to stock after this whole process? I just want to be able to get 2.2 when it comes out…

    • droidroks

Most definitely. Give it a shot. I should have done this earlier instead of waiting two months. It's like I have a brand new phone again. There's tons of 411 on this site and a bunch of people that will help you a long the way.

      • DeJecT

I took the plunge and rooted to buglessbeast, smoked glass and I aint lookin back. I fell in love with my Droid all over again… Thanks Kellex for the awesome site

  • Towelie420

Kellex some of us had difficulties loading the update.zip . . . . LOL I messed with it for a half-hour and read other posts and I eventually figured out that I just needed to name it update (without the .zip part). It worked like a charm. Could be because I'm using windows vista? I noticed you were using windows 7, right?

    • Adam

So over and over again posters will say don't have it named update.zip.zip… No one ever seems to explain it, in many OSs (like Windows Vista for you) there is a folder setting that hides known file extensions, so you don't see the.zip part.

  • TyMopar44
  • twilliamsonlefty

when i try and open or do anything with the spf recovery file or the rsd lite file it says that no program supports these files and i have to find a program online

    what do i do?

  • So I finally rooted… and many does BB scream. Only problem I have found so far is I can't seem to get swype working again, this is a huge bummer since it is such a great keyboard. I have tried both your link Kellex and the swype installer… they install but don't show up on the input method. (any ideas?)

Also, I am a bit confused on backing up… What I would like to do is backup my information and applications that way I don't have to download them and reset all of my information. Is this what I am doing when I create a backup using ROM manager or am I just backing up that instantiation for that particular ROM? I looked into Titanium Backup and don't understand the advantages of this over what is provided in Rom manager Premium.

sorry for 2 questions in one post. Also, thank you Kellex for a great blog/website/incredible-amount-of-information-station!

YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND AND REACTIVATE YOUR PHONE

  • How do I change my costume theme if I installed a custom rom using SPRecovery? Do I just switch the “update.zip” file out? Someone help?

  • tboothie

Okay… I didn't consider myself a rookie until the stupidest of problems I am having…

When I launch RSD and turn on my Droid, everything seems to be working perfectly. Then I go find the SPRecovery SBF (which is not saved to by desktop) and should then click on the start button, but the start button is not enabled. I am running RSD as an admin, I saved SPRecovery without renaming it or unpacking it, and I downloaded the USB drivers indicated. I even uninstalled the USB drivers that were already installed since they were version 4.5 instead of the 4.2 downloaded. My Droid screen shows that it is using bootloader 2C.6C and RSD sees it as a device it can communicate with (using port 1). I even rebooted, since that always fixes everything, right? I'm stuck… Any thoughts?

    Fantastic site, btw Kellex!

    • texasdon

I am having th same problem with the Start button not being enabled. Have tried reloading drivers and a different machine but no remedy

      • Shades228

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. I had to move the file to C: when you move it there it will ask you for administrative access to do so. Hit yes and then the file should load.

        • texasdon

Much thanks Shades. Like an idiot, I never considered it to be a file permissions issue. Thanks again for saving me from being a complete fool!!!!!!

          • Adam

The issue isn't permissions its the path as far as I know

        • tboothie

Thanks – that worked for me as well. I was running RSD as administrator, but that didn't seem to matter. Thanks for the help!!

im putting the “UPDATE.ZIP.” in the root and it keep saying no such file or directory the processis being aborted.

    • kinokinojr

Make sure you renamed it “update” not “update.zip” otherwise the phone reads it as update.zip.zip

      • gioviat

if using windows go to tools/folder options/view/make sure hide extentions for known files is not checked that will make it easier to see and will reduce these errors

    • aczm1988

when you rename the file make sure you just name it “update” the .zip part is put in automatically. So if you name it update.zip it would like update.zip.zip. Might not be your problem but just check and make sure.

  • vsMode

I have experienced many of the same issues with the SPRecovery and trying to: 1) root and 2) get a custom ROM installed like Bugless Beast that everyone is raving about.

Problem: I followed the steps described in the video verbatim. When I reached the point of trying to use the ROM Manager app, I found I could not run the ClockworkMod Recovery with receiving an error “cannot flash clockwork recovery”. After several attempts, I realized my issue was probably with permissions. I had installed Terminal Emulator but it kept force closing. So, I could never verify if I was properly rooted before I could flash a version of the ClockworkMod recovery. My issue with Terminal Emulator was the only deviation from what I saw in the video so that's why I figured it was part of the problem.

Solution: I found another version of Terminal Emulator in the market called “Android Terminal Emulator”, which is free. I was able to verify that I was rooted and give the necessary permissions when I was prompted. Fixing the permissions in ROM Manager (premium version) did not fix that. After doing this, I was able to open Rom Manager and then run the “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery” and then download the “Bugless Beast 1.0 Rom” (see video on this site to do this). After rebooting, the recovery mode automatically did the install and then rebooted the phone. Just like that, I was up and running with a faster and more stable ROM and was certain that I was properly rooted.

I believe many of the folks having problems with the ClockworkMod Recovery should try what I recommend above to see if permissions isn't the issue. Verify that you can walk through the steps to verify using Terminal Emulator as described in the video above and be sure to allow permissions and check option to “remember” login. You can also try to run “fix permissions” in Rom Manager and see if that helps too. You probably will never be able to install custom ROMS until you have properly run the Clockworkmod Recovery. Hope that helps some of you peeps out there. It was definitely a frustrating morning for me but I am glad I finally got through it! Best of luck!

BTW – I have seen videos on this site where some of the apps looked docked in the bottom of the screen and remain stationary when scrolling across pages. Is this part of a widget or custom ROM? Looks cool…just wondering how it's done. Cheers!

    • nkhex19

Download either helix launcher or helix launcher 2 in the market. They are both free and that is what gives you the 4 stationary apps at the bottom of the screen.

      • vsMode

Thanks nkhex19… I am using Helix Launcher as we speak! Simple feature but very cool!

honest question, and i'm sure it's been asked before, but does rooting my droid erase anything?
i've done a few google searches and some people say it'll be fine and others day that you must wipe the phone but the contacts will return thru gmail and all downloaded apps are gone. I'd really like to root my droid but i'm worried about losing anything, especially my photos.

    • nkhex19

Your photos are saved on you sdcard and will not be erased if you wipe data and cache. Anything on your sdcard will be fine whenever you have to wipe data. And your contacts will be saved through your gmail account if you have them synced to it.

  • inkedog

hello. i have been trying to find any info on how to root my Droid 2.1 in a Macintosh environment? i have been running WINE with the RSD software but it does not 'see' the device(my Droid). any suggestions or do i have to buy a Windows box? Thank you.

  • jajajay

so i followed the videos and rooted my phone but i cant flash clockworkmod recovery. i dont have it. what do i do?

    • droidaholic

try looking at @vsMode's comment: He has the same problem and says how he fixed it

  • Can someone please answer my question?

    • gioviat

the easiest way to change custom themes is using rom manager!!! but you can also do it using sprecovery simply by downloading the theme smokedglass.zip…etc and renaming to update.zip ( remember .zip is the file extention) adding it to the root of your sdcard (not a folder) power your phone holding down X will take you to sprecovery now just install the update.zip file…no need to wipe data…

    • gioviat

Can't believe that I forgot to mention (Metamorph) it's an awesome app!!! check it out!!!!

  • droidroks

sorry this is a repost from another thread. i've been following this site for quite awhile now and i came to terms with myself to root my phone. i couldn't thank you more! i followed your instructions step by step…i currently have superuser permission. i dled android terminal emulator and typed su and got the $ sign. so im pretty sure i am rooted. i clicked on flash clockworkmod recovery and got the confirm model motorla droid (cdma) i click on that and it gives me an error occured while flashing your recovery. what do i do? did i miss something?

oh i went to all clockworkmod recoveries and installed 1.8.1.3 hoping i would be able to install bb 1.0 at that point. did not work. what do i do?

    • nkhex19

If you have the superuser permission ninja app in you app drawer you have root access. Try flashing clockworkmod recovery again. The latest recovery should be 1.8.1.4 as of right now, it gets updated pretty often. If you have the premium version of rom manager then you can download BB 1.0 through there.

      • droidroks

i was able to flash clockword mod i think. i then dled BB1.0, 7 slot 1.0ghz kernel, and the smoked glass theme. after it rolled through process 3 of 3 it said dl complete, but nothing changed. it's still the stock look. what do i do? in rom manager under flash clockworkmod recovery it says
        Current Recovery: ClockworkMod Unknown
        Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 1.8.1.4

        did i miss something?

        • nkhex19

I wonder why it says current recovery unknown. Did you download the free version of rom manager as well as the premium? Try flashing the clockworkmod recovery again and see if this time it says current recovery 1.8.1.4. Then just re download BB 1.0 and see if it works.

          • droidroks

it won't let me flash clockworkmod recovery. after i press flash clockworkmod recovery i press motorola droid (cdma) and i get an error occurred while flashing your recovery. so i tried the manual flash override option thats available when i hit menu. this is what's giving me the current clockwork recovery unknown.

btw thanks i really appreciate everything this site has to offer for the noobs.

          • nkhex19

Seems like a lot of people are having trouble flashing clockwork recovery. Did you make sure you downloaded the free version as well as the Premium version? The premium version is just a license so you need to download the free version as well to run Rom Manager. Other then that I can't figure out why it won't let you flash to the latest recovery. Unless something is wrong with rom manager right now.

          • droidroks

yes i currently have both rom managers installed along with other root only apps such as barnacle wifi tether, set cpu, android terminal emulator, and leds hack. i haven't been able to sleep easy with this issue. it took me 2 months to get over the fear of rooting and now i'm stuck 🙁

          • droidroks

problem solved at 11:34am 5/8 after my haircut. guess the hair and droid gods wanted me to have a brand new day! awesome! im guessing koush reset the server or turned it on or something, but all in all i am very pleased. i could not thank nkhex19, kellex, koush, and everyone else on the best droid site. i have gotten tons of info and know how from this amazing site. THANKS

          • nkhex19

Glad I was able to help. Enjoy the custom goodness!

  • preston

when i try to FlashClockworkMod Recovery i get an error occuring while flashing my recovery.what do i do?also under the flash clockworkmod recovery it says “you must have the clockworkmod recovery installed to flash and restore roms!” what does this mean.please help!!!

  • Rejuvination

UPDATE – Appearantly a LOT of people are having problems flashing ClockworkMod Recovery in ROM Manager

  • jajajay

i want to get my DROID rooted again since i had the 2.0.1 version but unrooted and now im following these steps but the rsd lite doesnt open. what am i doing wrong?

    • kinokinojr

What do you mean it won't open? Or will it not connect? Are you doing run as administrator?

      • jajajay

well when i downloaded the sprecovery and the rsd lite it said that they were “unknown”

        • kinokinojr

You just have to hit continue or allow or whatever it says

          • jajajay

i downloaded them but when i click on rsd lite it doesnt open. it says to locate it from the web or something. im gonna try to download them again.

          • kinokinojr

ok. i understand now. you need a rar extraction program like winrar before you can run rsdlite. the sbf is what you use in rsdlite. do not try to execute it.

          • jajajay

oooh ok. how do i get a rar extraction program?

          • kinokinojr

just google winrar and you'll find it

          • jajajay

            alright cool. thanks a lot.

          • onetime420

hey seems like u know what your talking about im having a problem with not being able to connect my drrooiidd to rsd lite what am i doing wrong…………i was rooted before but my phone was stolen now i got the stock gay 2.1 i want root again please help me

          • kinokinojr

Make sure you are holding up on the d-pad while booting after you have opened rsdlite and are connected via usb

          • onetime420

OK thank you for the reply I got it to work but now when I try to root
stock. Watching kellex I get this message ” can't open/sdcard/update.zip (no
file or directory) install aborted now I'm lost again…

          • kinokinojr

The file is probably named update.zip.zip. You just need to rename it update, it should do the zip part on its own.

          • onetime420

OK now LOL how do I get clockwork mod so I can custom rom my droid

          • kinokinojr

I think you flash clockwork from ROM Manager, but its been a while since I've used ROM manager. i usually just download the ROMs and flash them from SPR. Check out some of the other comments. I think I saw this discussed above.

  • kinokinojr

I need help. Followed the directions, had no problem. Been Running BB v1 the last few days. But I dropped my phone a few hours ago and now after having a total meltdown I need your help. When I press power all I get is a faintly glowing screen. To power down, I have to do a battery pull. Cannot get into recovery mode, or maybe I can but the screen is dead. I have been able to connect to RSD lite, but the screen is still blank so I don't what's going on. Should I just take it to verizon? Any ideas?

    • Rejuvination

      Well just in case –

      IF booted into recovery mode-
      -reboot system now
      -wipe data/factory reset
      -wipe cache partition
      -mount options
      -backup/restore
      -install

      there is the basic layout

      UNDER INSTALL
      -Choose ROM from SD card
      -Allow update.zip Installation
      -Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)

  • Rejuvination

Ugh… When I use the SPRecovery, it is stuck at 100% Executed. the problem is that the result says “In Progress…” and if I try to close RSD it says that it is in the middle of installing. It has been like this for 10 minutes. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

  • preston

when i try to FlashClockworkMod Recovery i get an error occuring while flashing my recovery.what do i do?also under the flash clockworkmod recovery it says “you must have the clockworkmod recovery installed to flash and restore roms!” what does this mean.please help!!!

    • preston

by the way this is in rom manager i tried doing what you did in the video

      • Rejuvination

        omg exact same problem here….

        • preston

yeah i dont know what the deal is have you figured it out rejuvination????

          • Rejuvination

Appearantly the servers are down for clockwork Mod, and so the flash recovery doesn't work.

I manually installed a different rom using the update.zip method and wiping cache

          • Rejuvination

Quick update – ClockWork Mod is back up

  • Phase3d

What I want to know is do you have to activate your phone again, and sign back in to your google account, or just your google account? Thanks…

    • nkhex19

You should only have to just login to your Google account.

      • Phase3d

Ok thanks. I wanted to know because at my house I'm not on a verizon tower, and the phone won't allow you to activate off a roaming tower. If I had to activate again I would have to make sure I was somewhere on a verizon tower.

        • I made it through the tutorial and I am now trying to reactivate my phone, but it wants me to make a 'special call'. It's not giving me the option to just log in to my google account. I'm having trouble reactivating now, and I think it's because I'm not on a verizon tower which is indicated by a triangle, and I get a message that says they can't activate my phone at this time.

I'm afraid to call in to verizon because I think they'll want to know why I need to reactivate my phone. I'll just wait and try to do it tomorrow morning, but it would be nice to solve this problem asap.

          • Phase3d

I rooted my phone over the weekend and had the same problem. You have to find a verizon tower and the phone will allow you to activate with no problem. I was lucky as I only have to drive about 5 miles or so to get into a verizon tower. I don't know of any other way to activate except thru a verizon tower if anybody out there knows a way to activate being on a roaming tower I hope they speak up! Also remember after you activate to do a *228 then option 2 to upgrade your roaming. After we rooted using this way here, it wasn't long after rooting we lost our root. The super ninja was gone and nothing would work that needed root. So, what we did was using sprecovery instead of flashing the 2.1 stock rooted, we used the jrummy flash file that kellex has here on droid-life in a earlier posting. That gave us rooted again and this time it stayed rooted, plus we didn't have to activate again going that way. Since then using rom manager we have installed CyanogenMod, and now we have JRummy back on using the blue version, and I love it. The only problem I have found is the Ustream apps for sending and receiving live video feeds doesn't work anymore. I checked out the cyanogenmod page, and it's a common problem with cyanogenmod and any other version that runs off the cyanogenmod rom like jrummy. I hope that problem is fixed soon as I did enjoy the ustream apps.

          • phew.
After multiple calls last night, I took a solid 8 hour nap, woke up this morning and it reactivated without any issues. I wonder if I had problems based on the time of the day (after 2am) or if it may have been too cloudy for a signal. Either way, I'm glad to have my phone back up and running, and now with SUPER USER permissions.

          • Phase3d

I'm glad to hear it all working great now! You must be under a verizon tower then. When you said it wouldn't activate I though you was roaming. Yeah that would have made me a bit upset too! But all is well and your enjoying be rooted! I'm using my phones wireless tether right now on my laptop. Works really good. Take car see ya later…

  • ReebyWantsYoMom

I need a lil help with step one part three im running windows xp and it seems 32bit and 64bit is for vista what should i download

    • Rejuvination

      Start-Control Panel-System

it will tell you which one you are running

  • ushao

Just tried applying the rooted update and now it's stuck constantly rebooting. I get to the M, then it reboots again. Any suggestions?

    • gioviat

did you use rsdlite and flash the sprecovey_ese81 sbf file….thats the only way to reactivate sprecovery!!! THERE'S NO ROOTED UPDATE!!!

      • ushao

Yeah I had SPRecovery flashed. I went ahead and flashed back to 2.0.1 after exhausting all my other options. Things are working again 🙂

    • gioviat

hopefully you have a nandroid backup!!!! otherwise i see you flashing the 2.0.1 sbf file…

  • kjhluih

is rsd lite illegal, if so, not worth it for me, rather just wait for direct root to 2.1. i just saw that when i was about to install it that the redistribution of it is illegal.

    • gioviat

a rooted update may never come out….but you're right… if you feel uncomfortable using RSDLite due to legal reasons your opinion is very well respected….

  • This is my question. How do I change my costume theme if I installed a custom rom using sprecovery? Do I just switch the “update.zip” file out? Someone help?

  • dalesadler

Does this mean i can tether my phone to my laptop and NOT pay Verizon for the useage ?

    • You can do that without rooting by downloading PDAnet app from the Market. I have been using this to tether for about 2 weeks and love it.

    • gioviat

pdanet is the non rooted way…but if you want to do wireless tethering you have to be rooted…. i seriously don't recommend tethering, but if you do don't download big files…

  • techjunkie

I keep getting a fail message in rsd lite. I have the proper drivers installed, but every time i click start with sprecovery loaded up i get the fail message……..help!……..not sure why I'm having so much trouble with this.

    • gioviat

make sure that you running the program as adminstrator.

    • Rejuvination

      • DeathofGrim

Yes im having the same problem deathofgrim. kellex how do we “run as administrator” didnt see that option anywhere. WHY IS IT NOT RECOGNIZING OUR PHONES?? Please help somebody ANYBODY AAHHHHhhhhhhhh i just want to get rooted HELP!!! aaahhhh

      • rdunseith

If your are using XP make sure your logged into an Administrator account and not a User account. Windows 7 just right click on the rsdlite icon and select Run as Administrator.

      • puck

AAHHHHHH FINALLY!!!! if you cant get rsdlite to recognize your phone and your on windows vista you need to go to controlpanel/users and find where you can turn user account control OFF then you will be running as ADMIN woohooo! finally figured fit out

  • jt

can anyone help me with how to use metamorph and where to get themes for it. thanx

  • mrdroid23

If I running off droidmod 1.0 right now on my droid and have not accepted the recent OTA Update yet. How can I get rid of the droidmod to do the OTA update so I can then go forth to get a recovery program, Download the rooted 2.1 file and then use the rom manager to get the bugless beast? Basically I need to just know how to get rid of the droidmod or what you guys think would be the best thing for me to do. I'm a amateur so any info will help and I appreciate it.

  • jacobgduncan

Thanks for this. Super Easy.. It's nice to be back with Root!

  • M1DN1GHT

thank you so much for posting this kellex…… but i have a question you said all data was wiped does that include stock apps such as gmail phone sms corp calender weather and news market music so on and so forth? if so i would like to know how to back them up i could care less about any of the other apps as i only really want the core functionality of my phone well thanks

    • Ray

Try my backup that will backup all your apps and data it works great.

  • Brad

So is there anything I should do before rooting? I want to verify that I am not going to lose all my contacts. Can I look at my contacts somewhere on the web to make sure they are synched to my google account? Also, I assume I need to store my apps list somewhere so I can remember what I need to download after I root. I should probably also map out my screen layout so I can get back to that quicker. Or is there a way to store this info before I root so that I can easily recover these settings?

Basically I don't want to spend forever reconfiguring my phone after I root. Is that just inevitable?

    • Ray

You can use my backup to backup all your data and apps as far as your screens I'm not sure if you can take screen shots without being rooted but once you are rooted you shouldn't have to set up your screens when you switch roms if you use the same launcher

  • DallasDon

Kellex your instructions worked perfect. Thank so much for running a fantastic site.

  • skreemer

I'm still debating to root my Droid or not, but I will tell you im leaning more toward doing it now knowing that I have Droid-Life to help. I am a super noob at this and all this talk of kernels and ROMs is a new language to me. However, knowing that i don't know everything about this phone already kinda makes me po'ed. This is by far the best phone i've ever had! Questions: If I do root, how hard is it to go back to exactely how my Droid is now (stock 2.1)? Will using this SPRecovery save my pics and apps, including paid ones? And will I be able to receive the 2.2 update and any updates following when released?

    • Ray

Its literally 1 click to go back to stock you just go into rom manager and DL stock image and bam once you use that you will get any update that comes out. Your apps are linked to your gmail but use my backup to back apps and data

      • skreemer

What do I do when it's time to update to 2.2?

        • Ray

once you return to 2.1 the update will be pushed to your phone over the air.

  • Eric

Umm. Sorry to contradict your logic Kellex but isn't having a “2.1 ROM with root access” the same as Android 2.1 being rooted? Please explain in further details. The way I see it its the same thing.

    • kellex

It's not because no one has taken 2.1 and found the root exploit to it. If it was “true root” then you would not be altering your phone at all except by gaining superuser access to it.

With this method, you are having to flash an entire ROM onto your phone that has root access to it. That help?

      • Eric

I think so. Either way i like rooting. 🙂

  • jch71566

I rooted my stock 2.1 droid without installing a custom ROM (and not wiping my phone) using the instructions here: http://ted.servepics.com/index.php?option=com_c

However, it was Droid-Life and Kellex's work that kept me going looking for a way to root my phone

  • McThomas

Hey, so I tried this. Got all my drivers and installed all the nonsense, but every time I open up SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf in RSD Lite, no file properties show up and it won't let me flash. It's reading the phone fine, from what I can tell.

    I'm on 64 bit Vista.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • Mrpicolas

ke sure you have the right drivers and the ese81 file id somewhere other than the desktop Ma

  • Hey Kellex,
You are the man! I rooted via your instructions for Cyanogen a few days ago and it was a snap.
My droid is so sweet now!

  • jt

just finished flashing, rooting and installing a new rom and kernel for overclocking for the first time. lovin it and droid-life

    • rockymtnhigh

What rom did you go with? Did you have any problems selecting the right kernel to do the OC?

      • jt

the newest cyanogen on the free version of rom manager.if u have a prob with the kernel go in and select another one and it should be ok .kellex has a post on here about roms ands over clockin check them out

  • Great post.

  • mortiz1978

this is off topic Kellex but can I get the wallpaper you used for the Saturday theme: -custom-theme-licorice-flavored-ice-v1-0-1.

    • Tom

That is a part of the custom theme.

      • mortiz1978

How do I get it bc I have Bugless Beast and I didnt see any custom themes

        • Tom

you have to go into settings of the nexus live wall paper, if it is not there it may be the nexusmod which is in the market

  • jt

having trouble withe the ese81update, zip file after downloading it. i extraxt and it adds all these extra files plus i cant rename it.ive used winzip 7zip and jzip and clues to what im doin wrong

    • evltwn

you're not supposed to extract it.

    • gioviat

      don't extract just rename update.zip…….

  • romick

I finally got up the courage to install Cyanogen this afternoon from a rooted 2.1, Did a back-up but did not wipe cashe. Lost my market app! Had to restore to my back-up. Market app is back. Where did it go?

  • DiGz76

After a couple weeks of reading up and doing my homework I finally rooted 2 nights ago. I am very happy that I decided to. Downloaded Bugless Beast today. That ROM is unbelievably fast. Kellex on your Bugless Beast demo vid you had the green nex theme. I can't find the option to change colors, where do I do that? Do I need MetaMorph? I went to the market to download that and it said I need BusyBox installed 1st. I searched the market for BusyBox, but it doesn't come up. Advice?

BTW…….great job on this site. I already thought this was the most incredible phone I've ever owned. Now that I've rooted I'm just completely blown away by what DROID DOES!!!!
Thanks and keep up the great work!

          • DeathofGrim

Where do I right click at? I didn't see that option

          • DeathofGrim

            administrator

          • DeathofGrim

            How do I do that?

          • DeathofGrim

            im running xp.

    • jawa5636

Hopefully you backed up your previous ROM. You need to pick a new kernal. I originally chose 1.2 and got stuck. Had to go with 1.0 GHZ and the thing works like a charm!

      Hope this helps.

  • QBallTBEB

As you can tell, I'm not the most techy guy out there…

    • maizekidstill

did you get this fixed yet?

      • qballtbeb

Yup, realized I skipped a step after I installed ROM Mgr. I'm rooted and overclocked… plus I'm running Bugless Beast! This is awesome. My phone is so fast. It is running pretty hot though.

        • maizekidstill

What kernal did you go with and what do you have it overclocked too?

          • QBallTBEB

I went w/ Bugless Beast (smoked glass) and running at 1ghz.

  • Adamania

Does the new Bugless Beast offer Apps2SD?

    • kellex

Not yet. Hopefully in the next release.

    • gioviat

      unfortunately no….. i wonder why…maybe pete's next release…fingers crossed

  • Howdy! This is perfect!

Can anyone recommend a good application back-up application that will back up everything (including applications, data, and links to the market) to the SD card (or wherever else, just be able to get them back)? Note: This is before I root/install a custom ROM on the phone, this back up app should work with stock 2.1.

I heard Astro does back up the applications but doesn't save the settings. (At least I won't have to download them) Anything better out there?

    • DiGz76

He has that Titanium Backup recommened at the top of the page. I downloaded it myself just now. Looks like it save all apps plus settings.

      • Does Titanium Backup work for non-rooted phones?

I'm looking for a back up solution that works before I root the phone; I plan on using Titanium afterwards.

        • DiGz76

Sorry titanium is for rooted only. But astro file manager can be used by nonrooted. Astro can back up all your apps. Unfortunately it want back up all the app settings, but at least you don't have to redownload everything.

        • gioviat

          no…root only

  • natthompson72

ok i try to go into recovery and instead of giving me all this wipe cache and data stuff, i just get a picture of a triangle and droid. help?!

    • kellex

That means you did not flash the SPRecovery SBF correctly.

  • ElCam

Where/How do I “download the correct Motorola USB drivers and install to your PC?” When I download it, I extract the zip to the desktop and it's all unreadable icons. What am I doing wrong to save this to my computer? Thanks!

    • Rejuvination

go to the motorola website. They have UPDATED drivers, the ones Kellex provided are slightly out of date

  • RealGame22

Every Phone News, Somebody always bring up the EVO. Dang….It's just a like the Droid Incredible, except it just have (Bigger Screen,4G, and 2 Cameras).lol. Wait and see…

    • nerwus

I know about the phone, my ? is are we going to be able to record 720p videos like the EVO will or is the EVO going to have a different camera

      • Tom

Honestly… Why would you use a phone to record in HD? I really don't see the point… I'd much rather get something with a lens designed to actually record in HD. For some reason I can't see a phone camera being very good at recording in HD… I'm sure it can, but I'd much rather have an actual HD camcorder…

I'd compare taking HD videos with a camera phone as opposed to a real HD camcorder, to trying to replace a Nikon SLR with your phone. It just doesn't happen.

  • BK1

Is there any reason to be concerned with security on our phones after rooting? I mean what would prevent devs from adding a program that reports our phone activity back to them or back to a server? What about those alt keyboards? Could they have something that records key strokes. How do I know that I can trust ROM manager and the custom roms on there?

This blog provides great info and I would love it if people could comment on these concerns. It would make me feel much better about rooting.

    • Nepherim

Not much, which is the main reason I have not rooted. That's not to say any of the devs *have* or even would do this. But it is a possibility.

      • kellex

I keep tin-foil wrapped around my Droid as well just in case.

        Come on guys…

        • maizekidstill

          LOL

        • maizekidstill

This is a definite sign that you should not root your phone lol.

        • TeairraMa

It was an honest question, and not a stupid one in my opinion. Theres no need for sarcasm.

          • Ray

And dont talk threw your mouth piece either big brother is monitoring that what a idiot who do you think you are

        • Nepherim

Not sure what the hostility is for; I wear no tinfoil hat, or at least if I do it's pretty small. The answer to the original question remains 'yes'. Not sure if it's worth the effort, but some clarification anyway.

Whenever you choose to root, or install software from an external source, you do a quick assessment. In some case the factors are so one-sided you don't even consciously do an assessment. Here's what the assessment might look like:
1] What do I get out of it?
2] What are the chances of something 'bad' happening (in this case, something 'bad' is malicious intent from the ROM publisher, but 'bad' might be defined differently in other situations)
3] What are the consequences of the 'bad' thing; what's the worst case?

Answers to the above will always be personal, and will be affected by individual situations. An example is below — it's not necessarily the answer that applies to you, nor even to me.

1] Benefit: Not much. Change some themes. Turn the damn LEDs off. Over clock, might be nice.
2] Likely hood: On a rough scale, chances of 'bad' are extremely tiny.
3] Consequence: Again, on an arbitrary scale are very large to catastrophic; Droid is used in a corporate environment; has business contacts, and business calendar, business account password; all emails (including banks email — no passwords, but still); passwords entered on browsers; and so on.

So, *in this case*, using that very rough criteria, the benefit is not worth the consequence, even though the chance is tiny. Other situations, kellex, might dictate otherwise, without even bothering with a conscious evaluation. No problem.

But to think that there is absolutely ZERO chance of anyone *ever* publishing a corrupt ROM is naive indeed. The original question was *could* a ROM contain malicious code. The answer is yes, it could. How you choose to use that information in your assessment is up to you. Name calling optional.

          • Tom

His concern wasn't a corrupt ROM, it was a ROM that would feed information back to the dev… Yes, there will be ROMs that will screw with your phone, but that is what Nandroid back-ups are for. But to even CONSIDER that devs will put keystroke loggers, remote radio monitoring programs, or anything like that is just simply paranoia.

Is there a chance that some keyboards may contain keystroke loggers? Of course there is, that is why Android warns you when you install new keyboards at any time. However the likelihood of any one of those developers having a computer system powerful enough to keep up will all of that traffic and information is near ridiculous. Same goes for a dev installing anything like that. I'm fairly sure Koush's MacBook Pro is no where near powerful enough to handle thousands of droids sending information to a computer. These people are smart, not rich. The chances of them doing something like that is slim to none.

You paranoid people need to worry about the government, the third-party information collecting companies, and Google if they ever decide to change their privacy policy. Google could literally turn into the premier personal information distributor for background checks if they so pleased with the amount of information millions of people are giving them each day.

So again, if you are worried about security on your Droid, stop using it. You know there are cellular signal decoders out there that intercept cellphone transmissions, the underwater telephone lines are tapped by the US Government, everything we do on the internet is tracked by someone (usually a company who can benefit from doing so), and Google stores just about everything.

In the end we live in a world without privacy, so worrying about such things like “can a dev track my cell usage” is a silly worry when you consider what others already know about you. The concern is warranted, but useless if you consider that we live in a society that tracks everything. Don't like that? Move to Greece, they have the most privacy of ANY technological nation in the world.
http://www.privacyinternational.org/article.sht… <– refer to that map.

          • Samsonite801

The dev could just simply be trying to build a bot army. He could then sell it as an army of 'Droidbots' and they'd be really marketable as an unstoppable army ready for malicious denial-of-service attacks. Don't be so naive, these armies do exist and most people wouldn't even know that their computer or device is participating in that army of bots. If mine was, I don't even care if it was. I'm more worried about the key logger thing myself. I try to minimize use of passwords on mine and I never enter credit card numbers in my phone

          • Wow… you guys have all fallen for the hype… I have actually been working on the new Android rootkit… its a possibility yes, but don’t think its as easy as all of you seem to think it is.

      • Tom

Yes… because it is the DEVS that you need to be concerned with… Not the multimillion (maybe billion?) dollar information collection companies that profit from information they collect on you, legally or not, that sell it whenever a company wants to preform a background check on you. Or the government that has a dossier on you, and probably knows your whole life story better than you do.

You know there is reality, which is that the government has a file on you, and third party companies have files on you. Then there is paranoia that some geek in his basement is tracking probably thousands of droids with his computer because of software placed on your droid in a custom rom.

Perhaps you should do what Kellex said and wrap your Droid in tin-foil since that is the only way to ensure that no one is intercepting your information. Oh and stop going on the internet too, using facebook, myspace, twitter or any other networking sites….

    • No-one

of course there is a BIG concern!
ask yourself this question, why would you trust these people who make these ROM’s?

to all those that diasgree with me, please, i’m not asking for your opinion.

  • aarynk

Soo happy I rooted again!! I should have never unrooted to get the official 2.1 from VZW it wasn't worth it at all. I forgot how smooth and fast the Droid can be once overclocked.

Running Bugless Beast v1 right now and LOVE my Droid again! Just like a new phone

    • evltwn

I'm with you. I went back to stock got the update, and was quickly bored with it. The videos are awesome. If you follow them step for step, you can't/won't go wrong or mess up your phone.

  • preston

when i try to install /sdcard/update.zip it says no file or directory installation aborted.help please

    • Adamania

If you're running Vista, don't name the file “update.zip”. Simply rename is “update”.

      • evltwn

sounds like you skipped a step. this happened to me when I was trying to go from 2.0.1 rooted back to stock. you have to select “allow update.zip installation.” then choose “install/sdcard/update.zip” this should get you rocking.

      • preston

i am using vista.ill try this when i get a chance later on this evening.thanks adam

  • nerwus

Hey thanks for all your hard work K. Once the sweet day will come when the inc will be rooted do you think it's possible to get our cameras to record 720p like EVO or do you think its hardware issue.

  • Zander_206

I took a chain saw to the fence i was on, a couple of days ago and rooted my DROID… Got bugless beast and rooted without a single problem Kellex's directions are amazing!!! and i love every second of being rooted bugless beast is sooo fast!!!! 🙂

    • timarnette

I also love bugless beast. Very fast!!!!

    • This is obviously not a good site if your looking for answers to your problems. I think I’ll go elsewhere.

      • khb

I also love bugless beast. Very fast!!!!

  • Taylor

I am having trouble opening rsd lite. My computer says it can't open the file because it does not know what program created it. Can anyone help me with what I need to do to fix this?

    • Patrick

Download Winrar at Cnet that will let you open/install.

      • Jeff

why does the winrar download take so long? it says 5 hours…

  • Hep

Maybe you should just create a big, plain-style graphic banner across the top of the site with a link to this post. “HOW TO ROOT!”

    • kellex

Added a small one to the right column. 😛

SHould have done it long ago though.

      • brandonmee

I rooted before the sprecovery hack came out. I rooted back with the 2.0.1 sbf file. However I did get the information from this site. Kellex ..you rock. Keep it up man.

      • Hep

Nice! I bet you still get questions. =)

  • fgonzo98

I had trouble….the update.zip installation aborted…then I couldn't get back into my google accounts on the Droid…I think it was a network problem…even Motorola and Verizon had agreed to send a new device…a couple hours later I synced up perfectly…

My question is…why did the update.zip install abort? I notice that I still have SPRecovery installed…

Tempted but spooked…what did I do wrong?

    • aarynk

For me when I did it I downloaded the ROM from internet explorer and didn't work I got the same error message when trying to instal the update on my phone. I had to redownload the ROM with firefox and have Winrar installed. I renamed it just update and the followed the video. Worked like a champ.

      • fgonzo98

I downloaded the ROM from Chrome…and had Winzip…still spooked though…may give it a try in a week…thank you!

        • DiGz76

Yes, just name it update instead of update.zip. I had the same issue. After I did that it worked problem free.

    • evltwn

sounds like you skipped a step. this happened to me when I was trying to go from 2.0.1 rooted back to stock. you have to select “allow update.zip installation.” then choose “install/sdcard/update.zip” this should get you rocking.

  • skfridls

i'm a noobie at rooting and i really wanna do it but i don't understand the whole kernel business…what is that all about? what is it and what does it mean/do? any help is much appreciated, thanks guys!! 🙂

    • DiGz76

It just tells your phone what speed, voltage ect. to run at. When you initialy root your kernal isn't changes, and you don't have to change it. After you root get rom manager from the market. Open that, then click download rom. Then click cyanogen mod, and then bekit kernal. There you will see a list of the kernals you can chose from, and you will see stock/default is selected. After you get a better understanding of them, then you should start playing with them.

  • preston

when i try to install /sdcard/update.zip it says no file or directory installation aborted.help please

    • DiGz76

Change the file name to just update instead of update.zip. Since it is already a zip file if you name it update.zip then technically you are naming it update.zip.zip. I had the same issue when I tried it the 1st time. Changed it to just update and it worked fine.

  • I'm a Mac user, so is there anyone out there who can help me do this on a Mac?…

    • aarynk

Same here… I did the process but had to do it on a Windows PC. It was horrible using it but worked great!

      • braydenn

        oh no me toooo:[

    • Ray

This process only works on a pc ppl have brought this up before and I'm pretty sure you have to be on a pc to root

    • FEZZYWIG

Would this work on the Windows side of my Mac?

  • Drew

Noob question perhaps… But is there a way to do this without wiping the device. I know almost everything is recoverable and you don't need to repay for apps and all that, but just various settings and the time to reinstall everything and the like seems like quite a hassle.

If it is absoulutely necessary can you guys let me know on average how often it takes yall to get back to normal with all your data and such?

    • Drew

Oh…and Thanks in advance for any help…the site is great Kellex…really a great resource!!

    • nkhex19

Download Astro File Manager and you can back up all your apps in there and its saved to your sdcard so no matter how many times flash your phone it doesn't erase anything on your sdcard. Your contacts are saved through your google account if you synced your contacts to your gmail account. reinstalling all your apps can be tedious but worth it when your installing a rom.

      • Drew

ok, i have astro…so this backsup what like my settings, or the actual app? and if i reinstall from an astro backup will the market still recognize that I DL'd and installed all those apps for the purposes of updates and such? (if that makes any sense at all)

        • nkhex19

I think you will have to redo all your settings, it reinstalls the actual app. The only downside is I do believe it doesn't relink your apps to the market. Once you root though there is an app called titanium backup (root users only) and that actually backs up all your apps+data and settings and your market links. Its a must have.

      • jarrett

yeah, but the only problem with backing up your apps with astro is that you cant update them after you put them on your phone again

  • Tom

You might want to add AutoKiller to that list kellex. It tweaks the droid's memory usage so that it can auto end apps at a higher frequency to keep your droid fast. TAKE THAT STEVE JOBS! Something better than a task killer!

  • timarnette

I did this and I love it. So glad I did.

  • natthompson72

ok. im obviously a huge noob here. but my flash keeps failing. help 🙁

    • nkhex19

You made sure you downloaded the right usb drivers and renamed the zip file update.zip and not update.zip.zip? When you rename the file just put update your computer will know its a zip file already so if you are renaming it update.zip your actually making it update.zip.zip

      • natthompson72

ok i just did that. what now? try the flash again? and do i rename the sbf file?

        • natthompson72

and yes i have the correct bit driver

        • nkhex19

I thought you were stuck at installing the update.zip file not the sbf file. You don't need to rename the sbf file. Leave that as is. If your driver is correct then open rsd lite, go at the top and you will see the box with
this in it …. click on that and locate the sbf file, double click it or open it and then rsd lite should recognize your device and say its connected in rsd lite. Then just hit start. Your phone is in bootloader mode right?

          • natthompson72

ya, i followed all the instructions. i just started over by deleting all the files. im downloading them again now. i think what happened is i unzipped the driver file/

          • nkhex19

ok, yeah that's probably what was causing the issue.

          • nkhex19

Did you get it to work?

    • nkhex19

actuallly my bad, you said your failing at flashing the sbf file right? make sure you have the right driver installed. Did you check your computer to see if you needed the 32 or 64 bit driver?

  • i would make the jump to root to run other roms on the phone but then i run into a problem since i have the telus milestone with the locked bootloader. this is a big drag. oh well. until they get that bootloader unlocked or a way around it, i'm stuck with stock.

  • Mike

this is great I cant wait to do this. However I have two questions can I still receive OTA updates and can this be undone in case I ever want it to be.

    • kellex

You will not receive OTA updates and it can be done, but it's not super simple right now.

      • Can't you just flash stock unrooted 2.0.1 from ROM manager and receive OTA 2.1?

  • jizzoizzm

Kellex is the fn man, I'm not home at computer, I'm an overnight taxidriver in Philly, thanx for your suggestion, I can't wait to try it tomorrow, droilife.com…….PEACE!!!

  • Ok im rooted on 2.0.1, are there any advatages goin thru this process to 2.1??? Or should i just wait til 2.2 to unroot??

    • kellex

2.1 is a better build that 2.0.1, and 2.2 will likely not be out for months to end users like us.

      • dod i need to be on 2.1 to go to 2.2 or will i just have to unroot my 2.0.1??

        • nkhex19

I would imagine you would have to be on 2.1 to go to 2.2. I may be wrong though.

          • the only thing i want to know is if there is a reason that i shoud do these steps?? I like the way it is now (rooted), is there anything special about doing this

          • nkhex19

If you are already rooted then disregard this post. This is for non rooters trying to gain root.

          • gioviat

people that updated their phones from 2.0.1 to ota 2.1 lost sprecovery…. this is just a simple way to reflash sprecovery… IN YOUR CASE YOU'RE GOOD!!!!

      • gioviat

You mean 2.2 (aka Froyo) is being created to eliminate the use of custom roms? The days of rooting are almost over?

  • cantrootmydroid

every time i try it says fail

    • maizekidstill

are you still having issues? If so I might be able to help, I had the same problem long ago

  • jizzoizzm

    Any suggestionz???

  • jizzoizzm

II get a problem at no.10 of step 1 because the file does not open! I'm using a new HP computer and I've paid $40 for a program tht claimed it could open this type of file. Needless to say it was a east of money so far and I'm tryna get a refund while I stay with stock 2.1…..Wat a drag,..I'm happy for the rest of the world tho…LOL

    • kellex

You aren't actually opening the file…you are just opening it in RSD Lite. If double clicking doesn't work, then click once, and then “open” in RSD Lite.

  • Ray

I am glad to see this so people can stop asking in every post how so you root your phone

  • Kevin

in step 1.3, do the drivers get installed onto the phone before continuing? thanks for the dummy instructions

    • kellex

Those would be the Motorola USB drivers that you install on your PC.

  • Question – Has anyone had a problem with their phone locking up and having to do a battery pull before they can restart? Here's the scenario: My phone is in my pocket or on the desk for a while. I grab it to see what time it is, hit the power button and…. nothing. Hit it a couple more times, still nothing. Battery pull; restart. Everything is golden.

If anyone else has had this problem, are you overclocked? I have a feeling this *may* have something to do with it as it has only been doing this since I OC'd. I was running at 1Ghz [with P3Droid LV kernel], but after it did this two times yesterday, I dropped down to 800Mhz.

    • Mine did this once running stock 2.1 …

      • mkregs

Mine did it several times running stock 2.1…

I can't tell you definitively that the culprit was this, but I'm using Helix Launcher 1 as my default launcher. I had Beautiful Widgets on my stock launcher and Helix Launcher. Once I removed Beautiful Widgets from my stock launcher, I don't have the same slow-down / lock up issues.

btw…I'm still not rooted. I'm getting closer to deciding to do it though as I would love me some overclock and tether. A speedier ROM would be gravy too. I'm still on the fence, but did actually load the Moto USB drivers and downloaded RSD Lite. I went to install RSD Lite the other night and my PC wasn't recognizing the 7Z file extension. I'll work on it some more when I have time. I am getting more and more tempted by the dark side though and may foresee rooted evil in my future.

    • gioviat

what custom rom are you on??? i would change the kernel….maybe your can try one of bekit's low voltage……of course if your rom supports it..

  • Maybe you could include links to some suggested root only apps as well or give info on how new rooted users can best take advantage of their new power. Overclocking is a good one glad you got that in there

    • gioviat

just type (ROOT) in the market….

  • natthompson72

do i repair the driver or remove it kellex?

  • rockymtnhigh

This is great. One suggestion — follow it up with what the user needs to do to be able to over-clock, and maybe a list of two or three roms to choose from. While I have argued against this site being a forum, I think this would be helpful.

    • kellex

Good point. Let me add some overclock links. 🙂

      • rockymtnhigh

Thanks Kellex. I will share the link to this post on the Phone Zone at SatelliteGuys.us. We have several droid users who would be interested in your always excellent work.

  • erica

This is exactly what I have been looking for! Thank you thank you thank you so much… I can't wait to try it, bugless beast here I come!!

  • iApex

    Nice write up.
The SPRecovery method is quick and painless. It took me like 15 minutes to actually root the phone… Finding a ROM I liked and spending like $10 for ROM Manager and SetCPU was a whole different story though. I spent like an hour and a half looking for a ROM but I thought it was a fun process.

  • Being that I rooted on Tuesday, something like this would have been very useful, however this will be good for reference and sending to people who are interested in rooting. Thanks!

  • Being that I rooted on Tuesday, something like this would have been very useful, however this will be good for reference and sending to people who are interested in rooting. Thanks!

    • Mr_amerka5601

It wouldn't let me make a new post

I posted this above, but then realized it was WAAAAY up there and no one would end up reading it

      still getting that same
      E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
      (no such file or directory)
      Installation aborted.

I keep trying to do this, but every time I go back in, the .zip file is gone. Then I transfer it again and get the exact same result…HELP! starting to freak out…

      • Ijo

rename it just update instead of update.zip, it'll help, trust me.
