In the “coming months,” Instagram is going to start messing with your feed. It’s probably going to suck. Prepare yourselves.
Instagram says that about 70 percent of people miss the content in their feed because growing feeds are becoming harder and harder to keep up with. What they are trying to say is that you are missing photos or videos that were taken earlier in the day or yesterday or the day before because you don’t have time to scroll all of the way back through that many photos, depending on how many people you follow and how active at posting they are. Like Facebook before it, Instagram is going to try and fix this problem by sorting your photos and videos to “show the moments we believe you will care about the most.”
In other words, you know how Facebook won’t let you force your timeline to show recent posts in chronological order at all times and continues to default to their “Top stories” garbage? Instagram is going to do the same thing. Your new feed will be in an order “based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post.”
Ugh.
UGH.
Instagram says they are going to “take time to get this right” and will listen to your feedback. Now would be your chance to tell them they at least better give us an option to default to “Most recent” instead of “Top stories.”

As if the background autoplay that never stops, as if the fact that some posts appear with some other user’s handle, as if all the bugs they can’t care to fix were not enough….
I guess I’ll just stick to the “Explore” from now on. I don’t feel like turning on post notifications, I follow too many pages for that!
Ugh is right.. twitter us useless ever since they “fixed” it
Missing posts is Instagram’s fault. I can’t scroll all the way back to the last time I was in the app because it automatically refreshes every time I enter the app. If you could go to other apps, then go back to where you left off (as Facebook allows), this wouldn’t be a problem.
Makes sense, didn’t Instagram get bought out by Facebook? Shortly after we started getting sponsored ads. This was only a matter of time.
who cares, never used this app, it’s a time waster
Then why are you participating in this conversation??
If they wanted you not to miss new posts, they wouldn’t introduce this crap. They would add a marker to the position where you were last time you used the app, and gave a way to jump into that marker. Or they could add a tiny “new”-tag to all the new posts. Or something similar and useful. The reason you introduce this “algoritm based” BS, is to get people to scroll through the same posts over and over again so that you can justify showing an add between every X posts. More scrollin, more ads, more money. Oh look, who would’ve guessed the reason was money?
perfect solution. give me some sort of starting point where i last left off. Instead of scrolling down through old stuff, I’ll scroll up to newer stuff.
How about they make their application function in landscape and for tablets..
If it ain’t broke…don’t fix it. Lol
I am very thankful
to say that you and your team had a great experience
because i am becoming fan of your article and content

Already rolled out unfortunately at least for beta users
I don’t get why they just don’t steal what Google did and do a circles or groups thing. Let users group their follows and let them look at what they want based on that.
Facebook’s app wretched. Now that they’re bundling it with their other wretched apps that you can’t remove, I simply don’t update it or log into it on my phone. If I need to get on Facebook, I log into my computer and go to the URL https://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr and that puts me on my chronological feed automatically.
Well, this is gonna suck.
Really really bad.
Hey remember when Instagram first came to Android and iOS peeps were freaking out and super pissed? Good times
idk why but the shape of the top of the g5 reminds me of the samsung galaxy nexus
That has absolutely nothing to do with what people are discussing…
I miss more stuff I care about because Facebook only shows the same 10 stories repeatedly.
They fix the problem on fb? I dont think so. Lol. All i see on my news feed is likes and comments people did on others people i dont even know. Ugh! Back then there was an option to hide all likes and comments activity. They took it away. -_-
I noticed the past couple days they stopped showing you how long ago the post was from. Just step one into reordering your feed. 🙁
No, it’s there. I thought the same thing until I found it. It’s as good as gone where they relocated it. They moved it to the bottom of the post and it’s not bold. It sucks because the feed refreshes before I can scroll to see how far back the last post I saw was.
And at that point, I will probably stop using it altogether.
I never look at my Facebook feed for that reason. I have created pages on Facebook to follow certain pages, in chronological order.
Or they could you know give us the option to choose between the two. Looks like I’m done with Instagram now. What’s the next new social media bullshitt I can use that’s good that will be bought by a big shady company that I don’t like and eventually be ruined?
This sounds stupid. why not just have a scroll feed like twitter where the new items are hidden above the visible portion of the screen?
Every Social Network turns to crap in 3 years. Nothing new here lol
This is seriously the most irritating thing about Facebook. I miss more posts that I’m ACTUALLY interested in and get fed nothing but garbage in an order that doesn’t make sense. Please don’t do this to my instagram account…
This!!!!!!
Instagram is the new HTC. Ugh.
Just stop using Facebook. Zucks just wants to collect information about you so he can sell it to advertisers and make money.
It takes a few extra clicks, but you actually can view facebook chronologically. Desktop: top left, click arrow next to News Feed and choose Most Recent. In mobile (android app anyway), click the three-line menu icon, under Feeds, click Most Recent. I then make the Most Recent a favorite so it’s at the top of the menus. It’s incredibly annoying, but makes it possible to view the chronological order instead of what facebook thinks I want to see.
not an issue for me personally but IG and FB could really benefit from having feeds organized by groups such as friends, artists, prominent figures, etc. for those who follow a ton of people. but auto grouped like how gmail automagically separates promos, primary, and updates.
That would be great
It used to be like that maybe 6 year’s ago. It was awesome.
THIS is one of the big reasons I deleted my facebook. they started taking away user customization. IG started with ads, albeit not as atrociously as FB, and now this. IG is the only social media I interact with but i may have to delete it too. just hope they give people like myself who don’t follow 1,000 people the option to keep chronological. and how about a reverse chrono option? that would be useful.
They could just let you choose to have the newer content load above where you left off. Maybe even change the border of posts you already saw to light grey instead of white.
yeah i like the idea of an indicator so even if they didnt load above you could still go back and no exactly where you left off. loading above would be the best way though.
“In other words, you know how Facebook won’t let you force your timeline to show recent posts in chronological order at all times and continues to default to their “Top stories” garbage?”
Actually it’s buried but if you go to the far right nav hamburger, scroll down, and click on most recent posts. I hate it, but it’s there. I knew this was coming. I don’t follow that many people, but it is becoming hard to sort through all the insta posts because of the way the feed is set up. Something needs to be done, but not this IMO.
I think they should just give you the option of starting at the newest post and scrolling back, or start at the oldest unseen post and scroll forward. Also changing the border of seen posts to light grey instead of white.
This would be the most efficient way to use their app. If it was efficient, they could show you the least adds, so they will never make it function so. They will do the opposite.
Just give us an option to opt-out from this nonsense. Although, been thinking of uninstalling anyways – this might finally give me the incentive.
I hate the “optimization” on Facebook (and given that they own Instagram, I have little hope for this attempt at optimization). On FB, if I forget to check that my feed is set to “Most recent”, I’ll miss posts by friends. Meanwhile, their “optimization” routinely pops the same story on my feed for days – Hey FB! if I had any interest in that story, I would have followed the link the first several times you tried shoving it in front of my face!
Or you could, you know, follow less people? Then you’ll be able to see all content unless someone is a posting maniac. I hate timeline manipulation.
It wouldn’t be so bad if you could at least opt out. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever talked to about Facebook hates that they can’t have chronological sorting. They don’t care about the end user.
Facebook does care about the end user. But you have to remember who the end user is. Hint: it’s not us.
We’re the commodity. The end user are the advertisers that are paying FB to get their stuff in front of our eyeballs. The longer we stay on FB, the more these advertisers will pay FB to make us watch their stuff.
This is another reason I jailbreak my phone. Third party apps are available that will allow your timeline to appear in chronological order. Hopefully they are rolled out quickly for Instagram as well!
I don’t mind a discrete and clearly labeled collection of posts that I missed (i.e. Twitter) but please do not just scramble my feed.
Welp, good thing I uninstalled it last week.
How could you? Lol I honestly just follow a few people like natgeo and some newspapers. Otherwise it’d be like how Facebook has become
I agree, this would be a terrible terrible thing. The reason I love Instagram is because I follow a limited number of people and I CAN make through all the posts.
