If you plan on picking up the LG G3 from any of the carriers in the US, you likely already know that the US carriers are forcing you to buy optional accessories in order to enable wireless charging. The G3 in the UK and other countries includes wireless charging backs out of the box, much like the Verizon G2 did last year, but things have changed this time around in our home country. Carriers are greedy, we get it. They want you to spend more on the phone you just locked into for two years or spent hundreds on to get the most out of it. (more…)
A recent accessory filing at the FCC is giving us details on Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch that weren’t previously made public. According to a listing for a wireless charger that showed up days ago, it certainly would appear to confirm that Motorola will use Qi wireless charging to bring power to the 360. (more…)
We have to agree with Chief Digital Officer of Starbucks Adam Brotman on this one – hunting around for an outlet for your phone charger at the café can be a bit of a chore. That’s why the coffee shop giant will begin to use Duracell chargers as “Powermat Spots” within Starbucks and Teavana shops to let you wirelessly charge your devices.
The rollout will begin slowly - only Boston and San Jose offer Powermat charging today - but Starbucks has plans to expand the initiative nationwide in 2015. Stores in the San Francisco Bay area will see it sooner. (more…)
To say wireless charging is confusing to the average consumer is a massive understatement. A myriad of competing standards – Qi and tech from the Power Matters Alliance, for example – make picking out power docks compatible with your smartphone generally unpleasant. Even worse? When the time to upgrade your handset comes, you may be stuck with an incompatible dock and have to settle with a plug-in adapter dongle. Annoying.
Thankfully, Broadcom thinks it has the answer to that particular problem. The company has developed a new wireless power receiver, the BCM59350, that is compatible with every wireless charging technology on the market. No more having to worry about whether your charging plate is Qi-compatible or not – if your device contains the chip, it’ll charge regardless. (more…)
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is joining in the S-View Flip Cover with wireless charging party this week, only a month or so after the Galaxy Note 3 received the Qi-compatible accessory. This is your standard S-View Flip Cover, but Samsung went ahead and turned the attached backplate into a wireless charging plate that up until now, as eluded the S-View race. In other words, this product is no different than the S-View Flip Cover you might already own, other than the fact that when attached and set atop a wireless charger, it will wirelessly charge your device. Samsung finally released their Qi wireless charging back for the Galaxy S4 back in June, which we took a brief look at. Wireless charging has always been a nice add-on to phones, assuming you are willing to pay the price for the setup that typically includes a $50 charging pad along with a $40 wireless charging-ready back plate. Well, unless your phone has wireless charging built-in, then all you need is the pad. Either way, it’s not necessarily thought to be a reasonably priced charging alternative, but more of a luxury item. But what if you could get yourself into the pad for 50% off or $25? You can. Just over a week ago, Samsung announced that they had made their own wireless charging cover and charging pad for the Galaxy S4 available through their online accessory shop. It has since sold out a couple of times, even with the bundle running $90. If you have yet to pick one up and have been on the lookout, think about stopping into your local Verizon store. As you can see from the picture above, stores are starting to carry the black version equipped with Verizon and 4G LTE branding.
The cover by itself runs $39.99, just as it does through Samsung’s shop. We’ve also been told that if your store doesn’t have them in stock, that they can be ordered over the phone. For whatever reason, they are not currently available through Verizon’s site, though we would assume that they will be before long.
Or you could swing into the the online DL store, which apparently still has the bundle.
After spending plenty of quality time with the new Samsung Galaxy S4 last Thursday, along with a new Samsung wireless charging pad, we left Radio City Music Hall mostly confused as to whether or not the device will actually have wireless charging out of the box. Some reps on hand said that it has the ability built into the back plate which comes on the phone in the box, while others said it would be a separate accessory. Leave it to the Wireless Power Consortium to sort it all out.
In a press release sent out this morning, they have confirmed that the Galaxy S4 does indeed support the Qi standard in wireless technology, however, it will come via “optional” back battery cover and wireless charging pad.
So as in years past, we will have to rely on Samsung and carrier partners to release the wireless charging back. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck without it. (more…)
