The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced this morning that a new Qi wireless power standard specification “paves the way for fast charging of mobile phones.” In other words, wireless charging will soon have fast charging capabilities, similar to what is found in devices currently equipped with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology. I’ll say that again – wireless charging is about to be fast, just like turbo or fast charging is. (more…)
Samsung isn’t done talking about the future of quick and/or wireless charging in the Galaxy S6, even though it just penned an entire piece about the subject. To continue the conversation, they posted a short video through their Samsung Mobile Twitter account that seems to talk about both charging and overall phone performance, mentioning the need to be faster to get more done so that you have more time to give to others. In a post penned to the company’s Samsung Tomorrow blog this morning, Samsung all but confirmed that wireless charging will be a major feature in the next line of Galaxy devices, like the Galaxy S6. The post talks about wireless charging standards, combining those onto a single chip, being able to charge your phone everywhere no matter the standard, and using the technology to “enter a new wireless world like never before.” (more…)
Thanks to the introduction of the world’s first 15 Watt Qi-compliant wireless charging solution by Freescale, ultra fast wireless charging of tablets and big-screened phones will soon be a thing. Most traditional wireless charging units deliver at 5 Watts, but that low power delivery typically means that it takes hours to fully charge a device with a large battery. In fact, I don’t know that anyone who uses wireless charging on a regular basis would even attempt to call it “speedy.” With Freescale’s new solution, we could see a time where a 4,000mAh tablet could be charged in just a couple of hours. Own a Qi wireless charging pad? Have a Moto 360 on the way? Awesome! You already own a spare charger for your brand new smartwatch.
We knew this would be the case, thanks to an FCC filing for the charger that popped up back in June, but we went ahead and confirmed as much now that we are home from Chicago. So if you have a couple of these charging pads spread between your house or office because you own a Qi-ready phone, then you should have no problem keeping your 360 charged if you happen to decide that Ambient Screen mode is for you.
While wireless charging is somewhat useful, it doesn’t actually make charging a device any easier, considering you can’t remove the device from the charging pad without ending the charge. At least when your phone is hooked up to the wall charger you can use it like a normal phone still. Hopefully, with the newest version of the Qi Wireless Charging standard, this pain point of wireless charging will be kind of addressed. (more…)
If you plan on picking up the LG G3 from any of the carriers in the US, you likely already know that the US carriers are forcing you to buy optional accessories in order to enable wireless charging. The G3 in the UK and other countries includes wireless charging backs out of the box, much like the Verizon G2 did last year, but things have changed this time around in our home country. Carriers are greedy, we get it. They want you to spend more on the phone you just locked into for two years or spent hundreds on to get the most out of it. (more…)
