T-Mobile Adds 2GB $45 Simple Starter Plan to Line-up

tmobile 45 simple starter

T-Mobile added a new option to its Simple Starter plan line-up today that quadruples the original plan’s data bucket from 500MB to 2GB of LTE data per month. The new plan is a limited time offer that runs $45 per month, which is just $5 more than the 500MB offering. So yes, for $5 more, you can get 2GB of data along with unlimited talk and text.

With the Simple Starter plan, there are no overages and no annual contracts.

The new plan is available September 3.

They are overpricing the data allowances. Should be around $10/gig which would put it at 4 gigs for $45, not a measly 2.

  • Rovindra Singh

Does Google Voice work with this plan? I miss using Google Voice but the $30 price for my current plan is what’s keeping me back. I wouldn’t mind paying $45 if it means I get Google Voice, as long as it’s not $60

  • Rapist on BAIL

This plan does not include tethering or International text. Deal breaker for me! Better off on my $30 plan. AT&T has a GoPhone 1GB plan for $45 thru Walmart which is better to me. Better network too..

    • HarvesterX

Still struggling to under why they charge more for tethering on tiered data lines..I don’t get it.

  • napes22

I just signed up for the $60 1GB of data plan last month. It’s a good thing I’m not locked into a contract.

    • Jeff Badger

Yes, but there are some differences between the two. Simple Starter cuts off data once you hit the maximum. It does not throttle. Additionally, it doesn’t have mobile hotspot or the music streaming that you current plan does. However, since you do not have a contract, the choice is yours.

  • Mark

Does T-Mobile offer data only plans (including unlimited) for smartphones (ie. no text and minutes)? I know of the mobile Internet plans but that’s for notebooks/tablets and I didn’t see unlimited options.

    • Rapist on BAIL

$30 5GB LTE plan with Unlimited Text and 100mins. Add $15 Hotspot to tether option available.

      • HarvesterX

They charge you to tether on a tired data line?

        • Rapist on BAIL

For this plan, yeah! I sometimes pay $15 to tether my 5 GB data to my iPad Air. But I haven’t the last few months due to Xfinity WiFi service being everywhere.

          • MEBITCH

Please, stop being a cheapy chucky and buy the 80$ plan so you can have FULL SERVICES!

          • STW

Not a lot of people like to yap on the phone all day. 100 mins/month is wayyy too many minutes for me. Now I wish AT&T offer a plan $45/month for 5GB with tethering + 100 mins + unlimited Int text

  • Big Diq Myke

    $45 2GB of Data? Sweet. Love T-Mo!!!

  • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

This has access to roaming, right? I’m trying to see if the $30 5GB plan is still the best deal around for those who don’t talk much.

    • Jeremy Gross

but you only get 100 min

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

As I said, for people who don’t talk much. $15 less per month for more than double the LTE data, just with low minutes.

        • Rapist on BAIL

And only 10 cents a min after. I use about 200 – 300 mins. So I’m always buying a refill or 2 per month.

  • Richard Albert McKenzie III

the $30 special is perfect for my needs. 5 gigs of data, unlimited text, 100 mins

    • picaso86

I heard access to roaming is not included with this plan. is that correct?

      • Nate

Correct – not included in the $30 plan

  • yummy

The glass of water, just out of reach…so thirrrrrrrsty….

  • BK

Will this be eligible for the unlimited music streaming?

    • jimt

Probably not, the $40 version was not either.

  • jimt

Has anybody seen the Tmo network go from 2G to 4G using the 700 Mz spectrum anywhere recently like they are shouting?

  • Chippah

this LACK of coverage is making me thirsty.
THIS lack of Coverage is making me thirsty.

  • Chippah

Get used to using that Bullhorn to communicate or sumphin with you aint got no bars

    • flosserelli

Speak for yourself. I have full bars of T-Mobile LTE…and they’re spectacular.

      • Chippah

Drive to the Northeast to see an ugly baby or pick lobsta traps. = No service.

  • http://www.considerliberty.com/ Matthew Hockley

Hmmm.. I may be kicking Straight Talk to the curb soon.

    • Nicolas Johnson

Out of curiosity, if Straight Talk is currently offering 3.5 gb, why make the switch?

      • http://www.considerliberty.com/ Matthew Hockley

Because I don’t use that much data and I’d rather deal with T-Mobile directly. I’m on T-Mobile’s network with ST. So I get a little extra data for what? Craptastic customer “service” and the risk that ST could “lose” my number. It’s a tradeoff, but for the peace of mind, I think it’s worth it. At least for me.

        • Rahul Shah

Matthew, one more advantage is that on T-Mobile you can stream (youtube, etc), but not on ST. Am I right ?

          • http://www.considerliberty.com/ Matthew Hockley

I actually haven’t had any trouble watching YouTube on ST, but admittedly I don’t stream much/often (probably how I’m fine with less than 2Gb of data).

  • jdomann

I really would go back to T-Mobile if it weren’t for the lack of coverage while traveling. Literally NO data coverage between Texas border and Norman on I-35. I’m stuck on AT&T GoPhone till they can add more towers :/

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I wouldn’t call being on GoPhone “Stuck”. Great service. Though if you’d rather get cheaper just go with an At&t MVNO. Even cricket.

      • jdomann

Good point, however I’ve had mixed luck with AT&T MVNOs. Some have problems authenticating to the site and require resetting the connection (or switching towers) to get it working again.

Staying away from Cricket/Aio, since I’m not a big fan of speed limits :/ 8 Mbps on LTE just isn’t good for me.

Definitely not stuck though, since I can switch at any time. What really helps is the callingmart discounts. :D

    • soccerburn55

You go to OU? On Verizon I have LTE the whole way but my wife has T-Mobile and one we get passed river wind she losses data from there till the border.

      • jdomann

Nah, family in OKC and SW Oklahoma (where the reception is even worse). I live in Austin, but I like to make the trip up there every few months.
I’ve had T-Mobile twice on trips up there and in both instances, I changed providers as soon as I got back to an AT&T service.
I WISH Verizon would let me on their network and offer decent prepaid plans. But well….can’t always get what you want. :/ My mom loves her VZW service though, and I had it up until switching to Nexus 4 (now 5).

  • JiGSaW525

Bump the Simple Choice Plan options up another 1GB please or bring back the $70 Unlimited option.

    • ThatBabyAintMine

The unlimited option is still there, it’s just $80 instead of $70.

      • JiGSaW525

Ohh I know, I just want something that I can use. I am on the 3GB plan right now. The streaming music uncarrier helped a bunch, but could use the extra GB for Netflix on the go. I should have taken advantage of the $70 Unlimited before they replaced it with the $80 version. Love the 1GB tablet promo too, but don’t see myself continuing it after Jan 2015.

        • Bryan Mills

          Is $10 too much?

          • DanSan

            The struggle is real.

          • JiGSaW525

$10 is not a lot, but would love to save some more money instead of adding more to this luxury.

          • Bryan Mills

You’re already saving more than the millions of other people on other carriers.

          • JiGSaW525

Yup, I jumped ship from VZW over 1.5 years ago, once they did away with contracts. Bought a N4 and now an N5, all about saving. Being in NYC and Stamford for work it’s a no brainer. Also switched my parents and sisters as well.

          • Bryan Mills

I feel bad for you. Getting raped by taxes in NYC.

          • DanSan

Taxes? That isn’t even the worst part.

I left that nanny state for free america and didn’t look back.

          • Bryan Mills

Everything i hear about it sounds horrible. Friend of mine paid $700k+ in the city for an apartment the size of my bathroom.

          • DanSan

Welcome to NYC… where everything is insanely expensive, sitting in traffic all day is the norm, hipsters and liberals all over, you’re not allowed to defend yourself or your property and you’re already under arrest. Except if you’re a criminal, you can do whatever you want.

The rest of New York is slowly being infected by that city. I came from Long Island where the overcrowding, insane prices, taxes and other junk is spreading its way to us.

          • picaso86

I like NJ a lot better (at least some parts) NYC was my original destination to reside but after a couple of visits to my friend’s living quarters, let’s say I changed my mind. Way too expensive and the stress was off the charts.

    • Dapke

I am in agreement. I wish they’d move to 4 gb for the extra $10, vs just opening lower-cost low data plans.

  • Shawn John

This can’t be T-Mo’s reponse to Sprint’s 20GB for $99 data plan, Im waiting to here what John will combat that with, possibly 30GB for $75? Cmon T-Mo set the standard!

    • Bryan Mills

They’re offering free unlimited LTE when referred by a current customer

      • jimt

I can be a friend but only once, not clear why this is.

      • Dapke

Too late if you’ve already referred two, however. It’s a decent promotion, but doesn’t allow other movement by customers.

    • T4rd

Yeah, but that’s on Sprint… ’nuff said. =p

  • Rob

$45.00 for 2.5gb of LTE data with auto payment on Cricket Wireless which runs on AT&T’s network…..

    • Bryan Mills

“High-speed data access allows download speeds of a maximum of 8 Mbps for compatible LTE devices and 4 Mbps for compatible HSPA+ devices.”

      No thanks, Cricket.

      • Jared Denman

It’s not bad unless you need it for tethering to download a huge file. I have cricket and it is just fine for watching YouTube and every other data hungry app. Actually a lot of the times it actually is quicker than my work iPhone 5s on Verizon.

    • Guest

Love AIO-Cricket, left them for Verizon and never looked back. Discount for multiple lines keeps it cheaps and I love the device freedom.

      • hellothere

Don’t you mean you left Verizon for them?

    • spearman792

Just curious, but why not use Straight Talk? It’s between $40 and $45 after taxes (depending on how many months you pay for at a time), runs on AT&T’s network, and includes 3gb of LTE

      • Craig

Straight Talk may work for some but I and many others have had a poor experience with them. I tried ST for a month about two years ago and data was substantially throttled. Customer service was not very helpful. You also get much slower ping times, no tethering allowed, no international messaging, etc. For me I am on the AT&T / Wally World $45 plan ($40 after CallingMart discount). I get much faster data and ping times since I’m not routed though a proxy, Intl text messaging and tethering are included, plus excellent AT&T customer service. There are additional benefits to being direct with AT&T but those sealed the deal for me. I only have one line left on VZW postpaid and when the contract is up I’ll likely move it to this same plan unless something better comes along.

      • Rapist on BAIL

ST isn’t all that for data hogs. For prepaid service I would just stay with the big guys (T-Mobile Prepaid, AT&T GoPhone, Verizon AllSet, Virgin Mobile). Its more peace of mind and stability with those guys.

    • hank

i have been having HUGE problems with MMS on cricket. i will be switching to this t-mob deal

      • Jared Denman

I’ve never had 1 issue. Apn settings right?

    • Pitahson

$45.00 for 3GB of LTE on Straight Talk which runs on your network of choice . oh and no LTE Speed Cap like Cricket

      • Jared Denman

If cricket ever catches on I might have to switch to them. I use 10-15GB every month usually.

        • HarvesterX

Not even ten days into the cycle and at 8GB mark..

      • anselmo cruz

I’m actually convinced to switching to staaight talk, only thing holding me back is Verizon’s contract

  • Paul

Just waiting for the right phone to leave Verizon.

    • ThatBabyAintMine

You do know T-Mobile has just as many, if not more, phone choices than Verizon right?

      • Paul

Trust me, I am well aware of T-Mobile’s phone selection and Verizon’s lack thereof. There are several phones on t-mobile that I would take in a heartbeat over what I’ve got with vzw right now. But I’m waiting to see what the X+1 and Nexus 6 turn out to be before pulling the trigger on any of them.

        • Rapist on BAIL

          X+1or Moto Nexus X

    • Rahul Shah

take OPO or Nexus 6, when released

  • Jared Denman

I would switch back to T-Mobile in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for their coverage. I travel a lot for my job and just can’t handle edge.
