GO Launcher 5.0 Teased, Comes With Complete Redesign and New Features

Featured Video Play Icon

The developers of GO Launcher have started the teasing process for an upcoming major update that is set for release sometime in May. There are not many details, but what we do know is that the app has been reportedly reworked from the ground up, and will bring new user experiences, as well as new features for everyone to try.

According to the development team, the purpose of this update is to “bring users simple and intelligent mobile experiences.” We don’t know exactly how simple they intend on going, but we are excited to find out.

As it stands in our community, thanks to the polls we constantly run, it looks like most of your are either running Nova Launcher or the stock Google Now Launcher, with only a small handful of people running anything else. To be honest, I have ran GO Launcher maybe just once in my Android career, but I will probably have to give version 5.0 a decent run after its release. It’s always nice to switch things up a bit.

The update should go live sometime in May, so keep your eyes peeled on that Play link below.

I must be the only person that uses go launcher still lol… i tried the others but didn’t like them as much. It runs great on my note 3 with jellybomb rom.

  • teardropcity

Action Launcher FTW. I’ve been using it since it came out. Simple and clean. All this Launcher Pro talk really takes me back though.

  • No.

  • Caseyjp11

Works just fine on my phone. Apex on the tablet though as GO has problems with landscape on the larger format devices. Oh and you might pooh-pooh the usage “here”, but that launcher has a HUGE installed user base. As for comments here about lag/bloat…it isn’t laggy on my gear, and bloat, like taste, is subjective.

Personally I’m looking forward to the new version. I also have/had ADW/nova/et.al, and on the smaller form factor I prefer Go. -shrugs.

Why did it have to be Go Launcher and not Launcher Pro that was invincible and refused to die?

  • As any icon pack app developer tell you, Go Launcher is the worst “main stream” launcher out there. It has a twisted “iconback” implementation which prevents batch theming of app icons. Also, their theme manager is clunky. They have buttload of crapware icon ads on their homescreen by default. Unless they fix these, I’m never touching it.

  • The Dude

Why so much vitriol against Go? IIRC they were the only company offering a full suite of apps (launcher, contacts, sms, gallery, music) that were very well designed, full featured, looked nice, and were completely ad free, at a time when most other stuff on Android looked like crap. GoSms was a very popular app, GoLauncher had all sorts of nice features and theme support etc. And there were no ads, developing all this isn’t cheap, and I can’t think of any other company doing so.

Why not keep an open mind and give them the benefit of the doubt. Launchers on Android are a dying product category anyway, all the fancy 3d launchers, stuff like Aviate etc, no one uses anymore.

    • Speak for yourself. Lol. I use Nova daily. Go is ugly and slow.

  • JeffColorado

Loved Go Launcher initially…but they started bogging it down with so much crap. Menus were cluttered as hell with “features” I didn’t want or need and could not turn off or remove. It felt like another vendor skin. Go Launcher is what made me want a vanilla Android interface again. Been using Nova since and have never had a reason to switch.

    • Bubba Gump

I made the exact same comment to a buddy of mine that still uses Go launcher. I have used Nova for a while now.

  • BobButtons

Hated GO Launcher the last time I tried it. I found it very bloated and trying to take over aspects of my phone it didn’t need to. Also, something small but stupid, is if you went to look at installed themes and selected one, it’d take you to the market to install it. It’s not installed if you have to install it…… I’ll stick with Apex. I prefer it over Nova ’cause it lets you hide app labels in the drawer.

  • 1st 3rd party launcher I’ve ever used.

  • cwillen

Until there’s a economical way (regards to battery use) for third party launchers to incorporate the “Ok Google” feature, I’m not sure I’ll be leaving the stock Google Now Launcher.

I love Nova, but every time I go back I find myself missing the “Ok Google” feature.

  • OneForTheGoodDays

If this is like when retired indie bands make a comeback I am hoping a LauncherPro reunion is in the works!

  • Sky

it’s been Forever and a half since i’ve used GoLauncher back in the GB and earlier days ..I think i’ll keep that streak going 🙂

  • feztheforeigner

Don’t mind me, I’m just waiting on my LauncherPro update…

  • gpzbc

I run Nova happily, but I welcome some new and innovative ideas. I mean, Nova/Apex haven’t done anything really innovative for a while.

  • N/A
  • turdbogls

I’ll be keeping an eye on this, but I can’t see anything that would make me go away from APEX/Nova now.

    • Ryan Gullett

Nova is no longer getting updated (I believe). It works fine for me currently, but eventually I assume I am going to need to find a replacement.

      • turdbogls

yeah, i guess….maybe eventually…but for now, it does everything I want/need out of my launcher.

        • Wait, TeslaCoil announced they won’t update Nova anymore? I didn’t get that memo. 🙁 It is working fine as it is though. Recently, I’ve been tempted to try Aviate.

          • turdbogls

I dont think they announced anything, but the Dev has gone REALLY quiet for the past few months over on his G+ nova launcher Beta page.

  • Dustin

Am I the only one who thought that video was weird? They are making its sound like it will end world hunger…

    • diversion

It felt like it was translated into English from another language.

    • KingofPing

      There’s a video?

    • Yep. “We start our journey with”….. zoooooooooooom… I was thinking they are going to show something big. Instead “Passion” written inside a circle. Wut..!

  • emoney

    I remember my first launcher…

    • flosserelli

Was it everything you imagined it to be?

    • EC8CH

    • Panda.

    • Launcher Pro?

  • Big EZ

I used Go Launcher on Gingerbread, because it was the only launcher I could find with the features I needed. It wasn’t all that good. I used Launcher Pro Plus before that, and switched to Nova/Apex once I got ICS.

    • Gato Mafioso

Yeah back in the GB days the main ones were Go, Launcher Pro, and ADW. Always preferred ADW back then since the launcher pro dev disappeared

      • middlehead

I was still using ADW on my phone until a month ago; only reason I stopped is I switched phones. I actually might install it on the new moto x, because not being able to continue swiping my home screens around in a circle bothers me much more than it should.

        • Eric R.

Nova is a lot better and another than ADW

          • middlehead

But I got the pay version of ADW during a 10 cent sale, so it wins.

  • Synacks

Been 3 years since I’ve used GoLauncher. Can’t wait for screenshots.

  • shelderman

All of their products are like a 10 yr old girl designed them. I’m skeptical at best.

  • GO Launcher EX, the touchwiz of 3rd party launchers.

    • Adam Truelove

      • Ryan Gullett

You just described my ex-wife in three words.

        • Franklin

You’re just insulting yourself, since you married her 😉

    • WitnessG

It’s worse than Touchwiz. When I first got my S3, I downloaded it because I got bored of Touchwiz, but I immediately uninstalled it. Been with Nova ever since.

  • Greg Morgan

I used Go Launcher back in the Froyo days…ahh memories

    • All alone in the moonlight.

      • lgreg64

have you every danced with the devil in the pale moonlight

    • T4rd

LauncherPro was the best on 2.x! Wonder if it’ll let me install it on 4.4, lol.

      • Greg Morgan

Totally agree! But after the dev stopped working on it, had to use something else.

      • Inquizitor

LauncherPro was really the height of the “Launcher wars” to me. After that it just became a contest of who could imitate stock the best. Because Nova once went on sale for 10 cents, I just went with that.
