Chromecast is Now Open to Developers, SDK Released

chromecast

If you haven’t already, it’s time to pony up the $35 for a Chromecast. Today, Google released the Chromecast SDK to developers, giving them the power to build a cast button into their apps. Up until now, only select partners have been able to build in Chromecast support, but this now means almost any app (Android, iOS, and web) on your devices could enable a cast button and bring mirroring or casting abilities from phone/tablet/computer to big screen.

The last big Chromecast update we saw came during the holidays, when Google introduced a set of 10 new apps that had support. With the SDK now ready for developers, we could see a wave of them within days or the coming weeks. As those roll out, we’ll be sure to let you know the good ones.

If you are a developer, be sure to head over to the Google Developers Blog to learn all there is to learn about building Chromecast support into your apps.

Any apps in particular you’d like to see receive Chromecast support?

Time to create a poll! what app would be most desired to have casting abilities?

    • Nunya Bizniz

      WatchESPN

  • Andrew

    Slingplayer. Let’s go!

  • paticao

    spotify and the synology apps

  • Robert Willis

While I don’t have one, I would think Slingbox would be very useful.

  • Raven

I would like to see VuDu or even Flixter get support so that I can stream my collection of over 50 Ultraviolet movies.

    • Franklin Ramsey

Me too, I’m up over 100 Ultraviolet movies. This can’t come soon enough!

  • Zounder99

I’d love for NBC, CBS, ABC and all of the other local channels to do this with their apps… though, I don’t know that will happen.

  • Chris Mullins

    Awaiting the AllCast update :)

  • Ballerado
  • Brandon Fischer

Bring on Amazon prime video streaming

    • sagisarius

Ha, bring on an Amazon video app for android even! Though it would be nice if they built this into the iOS app.

  • Robert Willis

    MXPlayer definitely.

    • trixnkix637

      Oh yeah!

    • Christopher Moore

I also like Archos video player. Plays a few more audio formats and has built in home network access. I use both equally.

  • moelsen8

    sweet, sweet, sweet

  • David Narada Brown

so if someone added a chrome button to emulators ur phone/tablet would turn into a console and moga controller to play games on the big screen! or quick office gets a chrome button and ur phone/tablet turns into a computer and a bluetooth keyboard to edit docs n stuff on the big screen. endless possiblities

    • Jacob Mustin

probably would be too laggy for games. Theres always a 1 second delay from when you press a button on your phone to when the chromecast responds. Doubt that would change with an update, as its most likely due to the wifi network setup that the CC uses. MAYBE a 2nd gen CC with some processing power? Not sure

      • Sean Bello

this is why I don’t think it’s a prime time feature. it’s not even a full second, it’s probably less than half a second, but it’s more than enough to get you Nintendo mad.

  • Ballerado

    YES

  • Jeremy Gentry

    AMAZON VIDEO

    • John Legere

You can’t do that unless Amazon makes an app.

      • Jeremy Gentry

        Maybe they will NOW!

        • John Legere

Maybe. I don’t see why they support iOS but not Android.

          • sagisarius

Someone at Amazon made a poor life choice and got an economics degree. They probably figure it’s different audiences that will cross over for android (and buy a kindle) but won’t for iPads.

          • John Legere

I’d buy an HDX if it supported all android apps.

          • sagisarius

            ditto

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/nemesis099 Nemesis099

Same here, I don’t want to have to purchase apps again on Amazon to have them on the Kindle HDX so Nexus 7 is what I plan on getting.

      • Dominic Powell

100% certain amazon will create a amazoncast before they create an android app.

        • John Legere

          Just like Samsung.

        • EC8CH

No video support for android AND a price increase for Amazon Prime???

You’re making it hard for me to justify continuing my subscription Jeff.

  • Robert Willis

    EVERYTHING!

  • turdbogls
  • Ryan N

Utilizing phone as controller with gameplay cast to TV. Absolutely!

    FTW!

    • joejoe5709

Unless they can make the lag between phone and TV nearly zero, I wouldn’t use it for games.

      • Ryan N

Good point. It is certainly a step in the right direction though.

  • DKowalsky2

This football nerd needs some NFL Game Rewind support, ASAP. You’re telling me I might be able to seamlessly watch NFL all-22 tape on a 55″ TV, on demand? Awesome!

  • CaptainHowdy13

    HBO Go

    • JimmyHACK

Supported it for a while already.

      • John Legere

I wonder where he’s been hiding.

      • Raven

How about Max GO as they are practically the same app, but last I checked, it didn’t support it yet.

  • Beefy

    pocketcast get on it

  • codemonkey85

I for one would like to see Google+ let you cast pictures and videos. I’d also like to see Drive cast pictures, videos, and music, in addition to documents and presentations. Actually, for that matter any file storage app should be able to do those things. Possibly most amazing would be mirroring / display extension of the Android OS itself using Chromecast… hey, I can dream!

  • Kyle Bailey

    VLC

  • 640k

Come on Koush! Time to update your app for CC support!!!

  • Chad

Would this mean that MX Player would be able to cast videos from my phone to my TV? Because that’s what I really want.

    • turdbogls

once they update the app, then yes. the DEV seems pretty good so it shouldn’t take him too long to do so. I’m waiting for the same thing.

    • Steve B

      yes

    • http://twitter.com/savagejeep SavageJeep

Avia Media Player has it right now,,,,,,, for $2.99 In App Puchase- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.videon.android.mediaplayer

      • d-rock

Except Avia sucks. It won’t cast most of the time and has a lot of trouble playing things period. MX is much more stable.

        • http://twitter.com/savagejeep SavageJeep

Sorry. Few problems here. On occasion it won’t keep track of position if stop it and start back up, but it works nicely if you have a strong WiFi.

    • vosg

      That would be awesome!

  • 213ninja

    synology DS apps….particularly DS Video.

  • yummy

    Nachos and wings

  • George Fayad

    CAST ALL THE THINGS!!!!

    • Jared Tau

      yes!

    • http://www.SkyCapture.net/ Ian Smith

did you just rip this off from the #1 comment on the reddit thread?

      • George Fayad

Neg. I don’t reddit for android news.

    • Hank

No point in buying it yet till they cast everything, I want to watch videos off the net on my TV and read articles too, I want Google to cast all their apps, and games and apps as well, but it’ll be 6 months till we see all our favorite apps updated and who knows when google will update their apps like Drive most importantly or gmail or maps.

Going to get Samsung allshre cast so I can mirror my SG3 which will do all that.

  • Guy Meatdrapes

nhl gamecenter please!!!! im pissed my xbox one doesnt have it yet.

  • Adrynalyne

It isn’t available to me yet in the Android SDK.

I am guessing it is still rolling out.

  • Patmw123

    I just want WatchESPN support.

    • duke69111

I agree, though I’m not sure if that can happen due to cable restrictions and such.

  • Kevin

This should bring a lot more fun to the table.

  • Bradley Ruiz

now lets hope xbmc for android implements it :D

    • JSo

This would be a dream come true.

    • markgbe

wait i’m confused.. if you have xbmc on your tv, why would you need to cast it?

      • Bradley Ruiz

xbmc for android is a standalone app if they implement the cast to chomecast you wont need anything else only your phone/tablet and the chromecast and your local files

  • Liderc

Google should fix Chrome browser first, which doesn’t allow full screen video to be alt tabbed anymore, making Chromecast essentially worthless since you can’t multi-task while using it in full screen mode. It’s a problem with flash, but it’s because of their baked in bs flash.

  • clay

dear nbc sports, get on it! i want my EPL on the chromecast asap

  • JSo

YES!!! I can’t wait to see what devs do with this.

  • STEVEO

    Soundcloud

    • Chris

That would work better with a blue tooth stereo.

  • Brady KEITH

    Ron Paul “IT’S HAPPENING!” gif in 3, 2, 1…

    • Chris

Young boys are subject to his pedophile with that gif

  • Phil Stout

    VLC Integration Please!!!!!!

    • Brian Roskamp

I too would love VLC integration, but the video states that it can be used by Android and iOS apps and Chrome Web Apps, so at this point having the VLC program add a simple “Play on ChromeCast” option that will send the video to chromecast rather that the PC isn’t possible, but that’s not to say they couldn’t build some webapp that could handle it in the background or something.

      • eccles11

There is an official vlc app for Android.

      • Chris Stuart

Plex allows you to cast things from your computer to your chromecast

  • http://meatcastle.com/ Youre My Boy Bloo

Free at last, Free at last, Thank god almighty Chromecast is free at last

  • Daniel Russell

    Mlb.TV and NBA game time!!!!!

  • Dan

    Wooo!

  • TheDrunkenClam

Chromecast needs Bluetooth. Then you could use your phone (or bluetooth controller) as a more instantaneous controller for gaming. And maybe graphical processing. So you can game with it.

    • KojiroAK

If you wan’t that, get a Ouya or Gamestick or something like that.
But the Chromecast isn’t meant for that.

  • monkey082506

    MLB.TV…I hope you’re reading this!

  • Trueblue711

So does this mean we’ll be able to use it as a wireless streaming device for any video we want like before Google blocked it?

    • Michael Hunt

You can already do that with Plex or Real Player Cloud

      • Fiorta

No you can’t. Not without paying or uploading first.

  • droidrazredge

The floodgates are now open for the Chromecast, let the surfing and fun begin!!!!!

  • BK

Finally. Now things are going to get interesting (rubs hands)…

  • normmcgarry

About time. Any word on when the new Google Play Services will be released that includes the support? I imagine it is going to roll out today.

    • Anthony DeFrancesco

On the Android API documentation website they state that the new Play Services started rolling out February 3rd (today)

      • normmcgarry

Do you know if it includes the native Android Mirroring?

        • Anthony DeFrancesco

          doesn’t look like it

    • jamdev12

Google drive is one I’m waiting for. Tired of doing presentations while being tethered to a damn cable.

      • MikeCiggy

Never thought of this use. Brilliant

      • UniBroW

until someone jacks your chromecast and starts streaming porn during your presentation because there’s no password on chromecast

        • Prox

          lol

    • Steve B

What’s this? Is this a rumor circulating? I haven’t heard about this yet. This would be amazing.

Edit: I see it now, over at AP. It’s supposed to roll out today. Check AP throughout the day, they’ll have the apk eventually.

  • Ray Gray

i cant wait for all the casting apps to come pouring in. The ones currently available suck

  • Alex Coldstone Simon

    FINALLY!!!
