Motorola Gallery App Updated for Moto X and New DROIDs With New UI, Features

motorola gallery

Motorola just pushed an update to the Gallery application on its Moto X and new DROID devices (Moto G too). The update includes an entirely new UI to an aging, stock-Android-esque Gallery app that these devices ran out of the box. This new UI includes a swipeable Hamburger (slideout) navigation menu, “larger thumbnails, displayed the way you took them,” a Timeline of your pictures, quick access to your camera roll, and albums in a more familiar layout.

Again, the update appears to only be for the Moto X, the new DROID family (ULTRA, MAXX, and Mini) and the Moto G. If you have any of those devices, head into Google Play and update right away.

I’m just trying to figure out where Mr. Blue Pants’ left hand is . . .

  • chris_johns

I knew i wouldnt like it….why would i want to go up and down for pictures…left to right is what i want and thats changed…stupid…also why cant i open to my albums instead of always the camera roll…stupid again…i might rollback update if possible

  • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

Not getting kitkat until i have a reliable wifi tether option. Haven’t spent much time trying to find one, either.

    • chris_johns

there are plenty..im using one now

      • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

        What are you using?

  • Droidarmy

So I went into a Verizon store and the rep told me that the Moto X’s were not selling well and kept trying to push the new Droids on me. Is this happening to anyone else? He kept saying how the screen sucks and its too small. They didn’t have one one display or any stock in the store as well.

    • Gr8Ray

None on display, and none in stock… Boy, I wonder why they aren’t selling well? Must be the phone’s fault!

    • NickMotoX

      Where is this at?

    • cns2007

Verizon invests large sums of money advertising their Droid line, so they will definitely push those phones ahead of the X.

    • DroidJ

Yep. When my wife & I were shopping for new phones, they didn’t even have a Moto X on display. I asked and they got one out of the back. “Oh, we have so many phones we don’t have room for the X”…despite having TWO Droid displays.

  • Gr8Ray

So my wife asked me the other day how to create a new Album in the gallery, and after fighting with it for about 15 minutes I realized you can’t. And with this update, you still can’t. Obviously I know you can use a file manager app to create a new folder, but it really shouldn’t require a seperate app to do something so basic.

  • andres

    bringme apk!

  • Fresh360

    Looks like the CyanogenMod Gallery…

  • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B
    • adbFreedom

Maybe Woodside watches the DL Show also, weren’t you guys just talking about how the vanilla gallery needs a makeover lol? Man, I love Motorola and it feels good to be back after leaving my droid/droid x behind for Sammy.

  • gregba

Any hope that they can update the camera again? The low light photo’s are horrible.

  • Nathan Bryant

I like how they have these images up, because the camera on those devices are terrible.

  • Sean Walton

Motorola PLEASE get Rogers to update us Canadian’s to Kit Kat!!!!! Yet another update that I am unable to do as I’m still on 4.2.2.We are getting very frustrated in Canada and missing out on so many amazing updates. Heck we couldn’t even enjoy the boot animation theme over the holidays.

  • Kassidy Klink

worked on my rooted razr maxx hd. installed as system app and then changed permissions to rw-r-r

  • http://melivingmylife.com/ Colin M Lewis

why can’t they link to my google+ gallery like the old stock used too???

    • Under the bridge downtown

Not sure, but use the G+ Photos app for that.

      • dom

G+ Photos doesn’t cache all your photos, so your stuck if you want to show a photo with G+ and you don’t have network connectivity.
So stock gallery would be preferable as this does cache

  • Alexander Garcia

    Hahaha!!!

  • victor mena

So they update their gallery but they can’t update our damn RAZR’s? Tells me a lot about moto

    • MichaelFranz

Razr’s, while they arent exactly that old, they are a prior generation and reign within motorola. At some point you have to expect they are just going to go forward with current devices andbuild off of that. Do nto be surprised with razr HD line if they d not see 4.4. if they do it would be a surprise to many.

  • http://meatcastle.com/ Youre My Boy Bloo

How about they add PhotoSphere support?

  • Hothfox

Like it. I’d disabled the Gallery app and was just using Google+ Photos app, but I like the distinct separation of on-phone media vs. the mix in Google+ Photos.

  • Booyabobby

I like it. It does looks more like G+ photo app.

  • WalkerNA

I really enjoy the interface. Big props for adding animaged *.gif support.

  • Guest

I really like the interface. My only gripe is that it still doesn’t seem to support animated *.gif images. Luckily the G+ Photos app does.

    • Robert Macri

It does… sometimes there is a delay but it definitely supports them.

  • AbbyZFresh

Looks too much like Google+ Photos. i don’t like the design very much.

  • Bionic

    looks really great

  • Shane Redman

Still goes back to the stock gallary when you swipe right from camera….

    • Gr8Ray

      No it doesn’t.

      • Shane Redman

Well, it did for me :-P

  • Mitch G

    Apk Anyone?

  • Dominick White

Give me a better display(need my 1080) and bigger battery and it will hard for me to choose between you and a Lg phone.

    • dreadfall

what good is bigger battery if it drains in few hours??? g2 has higher battery but it wont stay as long as the Moto X.

thats the difference in thinking between an Android and iPhone user

      • Philip J. Fry

        Thanks for the laugh.

      • Dominick White

The Iphone battery doesnt last that long, i know a lot of people with Iphones and they complain about the battery all the time…i havent met anyone with a Moto x in person , so i dont know much about the battery in real world use…Plus i would think the Droid Max battery would kill the Moto x. Just dont want a droid brand phone

        • Johnny AppleSUCKs

I have a Droid Maxx and my roommate has a Moto X and a third has a G2. Both phones last all day but I can wake up the next morning and still not think about my battery unless I plan on going out that evening (past 7pm). He is at about 30% on the morning of day 2. Nothing wrong with a DROID branding. I was eyeing the HTC ONE on vzw for 4 months and ddays before the actual launch I chose the MAXX and never looked back. Active notifications is the feature of the year. I will never buy a phone without it. ever.

          • Dominick White

Not saying anything with a Droid Branded phone.. but already have one a Droid Dna . So looking for something Different. Already gave Htc and Samsung a Shot . But now want to check out a different Phone maker/Brand.. and havent tried out Lg( but like what they have done with the G2) and Like what Moto has done with the Active Display thing.

          • BlackMaGiC1o0

Droid phones have been mostly associated with Motorola. The Droid DNA is a beauty but the battery life on that thing is HORRIBLE. I own a Moto X and it’s best phone I’ve owned by far coming from a Galaxy Nex. Try these new generation of Motorola phones I think you’ll be impress with active notifications and touchless controls. Also considering the fact that Motorola upgrades the software through Google play is a plus.

          • Dominick White

I havent had much problem with battery with my droid dna, but then again i am rooted…hopefully they update their screen, once you have gotten use to 1080 , hard to go back to 720

      • Shawn Spring

I have yet to see anyone point me towards a post where in side by side real use comparisons the Moto X will outlast the my G2’s battery. I recently went with moderate use upwards of 39 hours off a single charge.

        • Johnny AppleSUCKs

Maxx->Moto X->G2 in terms of Battery Life. No questions asked. All three of us are avid techies and love our phones but all agree that’s the battery order. These are real life comparisons.

          • SeanPlunk

In my personal experience (and countless run down tests across a wide variety of sites), I can’t say I agree. I would say Maxx->G2->Moto X.

I would trust the following Verizon phones to get me through an entire day of heavier usage without worry:
            G2
            Maxx (any of them)
            Note 2 and 3
            One Max

The Moto X would be the next in line though.

          • Shawn Spring

Admittedly its not the most “real world usage comparison” but Anandtech rates the Moto X as follows (in terms of battery)

            4G Browsing – 5.00, Wifi Browsing – 8.383, Talk time – 12.62

The G2 reviewed did not have 4G, but 2G/3G Browsing was 8.53 – if you drop the usage by 25% to reflect more accurate a 4G signal usage rate, you still get 6.4 (versus the 5.0 of the Moto X) the other times were similarly comparable – G2 Wifi Browsing 10.73 and Talk time of 23.50 (almost double the Moto X)

DL’s subjective test would seem to bear this out as well, with the G2 having one of the longest lasting batteries shown in their review, and the Moto X being rated as average. I just have a hard time believing your statement that the Moto X would consistently outperform the G2.

        • Keith

I briefly owned a G2 and that battery was a beast.

    • C-Law

IMHO 1080p isn’t necessary on a 4.6″ screen. Its small enough to not make much a difference. My friend said the same as you and he has an s4. We compared the two and there’s not much difference. I honestly preferred the x over s4 bc its not pentile. I don’t like the way the crosshatch pattern looks

  • Robert Macri

    Transparent NAV/Status Bar!

    • MichaelFranz

Nova launcher…only thing is you still have the ICS blue. but better then the black bar. Unless you are rooted on 4.4 the xposed is your friend

you lose the droid command center but i us zooper anyway for a nicer clock

      • Robert Macri

For the Launcher, I use GEL for the transparency. Its one of the reasons I ditched Aviate. I was talking about the new gallery app having transparent Nav bar when viewing pictures. I don’t believe the old one did.

      • tharealoc

I have no ICS blue with nova launcher prime.

        • MichaelFranz

i meant for droid line, moto x is fine…

      • jack

Apex let’s you have transparent Nav/Status bars with 4.4 theme.

    • blakjakdavy

But the weird thing is it’s not using immersive mode. It’d be way better if it hid the navigation bar instead of using transparency. It would also then be consistent with the photo viewer in google search and in hangouts.

    • Alexander Garcia

Apex and Nova both give you the transparent bar.

    • Keith

      It did.

  • Lake

The update now has gif support too. I always had to use the Google + gallery to see a preview of a gif.

    • John Legere

Yeah, ive got a gif of Alexandra Daddario. ..i love the gallery keeps playing it. Lmao

      • Scott

        Ha please share!

        • John Legere

Hahaha it’s not appropriate. But here ya go before it’s gone

        • John Legere

          That didn’t work

          • Scott

            Beautiful. Thanks!

  • Rorix

i’d totally marry Motorola, they are doing great and showing off how updates are supposed to be done by companies.

  • Matthew

Someday I wish the gallery, G+ photos and snapseed could be combined into one unified app.

    • The_Omnix

This. Photos has some nice features, but the editing in the the gallery is better. And Moto’s swipe to delete is awesome. I currently don’t use snapseed, but I have in the past and it is fantastic. If only they weren’t all made by different companies….

  • MichaelFranz

I really really like it. I have to say its polished, and the options of camera roll, and the date/range of certain images. its really a nice enhancement from the basic google gallery. I dont mind the Photos app but this seems a lot better.

    • Droid Ronin

Just updated this on my Moto X and it definitely feels faster than the old Gallery app and Photos. I still like the auto-awesome feature of Photos and wish that the Moto Gallery would roll this in as well.

      • Flat_Stanley

Does the “albums” section just show the old folder view? Does it also show synced Google+ albums? Do those not sync the AutoAwesome photos?

        • Droid Ronin

It does show the old folder view. It’s still missing the synced Google+ albums and the auto awesome photos. It’s basically a refreshed UI with some visual improvements of the thumbnails.

  • jnt

I love the Moto X, but rest assured those pictures were NOT taken with one. :P

edit: I take that back… MAYBE the one at the table!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Hah!

    • T4rd

Hah, came to say this. Maybe after some decent post-processing.

    • John Legere
    • Will Frame

I was going to say that it’s great that we have an improved gallery app for our crappy pictures.

I seriously love the Moto X. Active display, touchless control, assist (especially since the addition of the reply to texts feature), but the camera is such a letdown.

If I didn’t care about camera quality, I wouldn’t want to use any other phone. As it stands, I’m constantly torn.

      • Jarred Sutherland

I honestly don’t find the camera to be as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It isn’t the best, but it sure isn’t the worst either.

        • jnt

I would tend to agree, but I haven’t found a phone that’s been released within the past year that doesn’t outperform the X in quality 95% of the time. And I’ve used way too many devices. That lends me to state that in the *current* generation of phones, it could very well be the worst.

          • Jarred Sutherland

I guess for me the camera on the device isn’t as big of a deal as I thought it would be. The camera on the 5S is great, but I found myself just taking regular old snapshots with it. If I really need quality I have my T4i that is pretty portable (compared to my 6D I had).

          • jnt

Yeah you’re exactly right. We just tend to take 90% of our pictures with our phones (we being my wife and I), and a majority of those are of our kiddos in random/imperfect situations. My wife will pull out our D5100 when we know we need a pro camera, but a majority of the time our phone is all we’ve got handy. In a perfect setting the X actually does quite well – but anything short of that (i.e. those random/imperfect situations), and it tends to really really struggle, or at least be very difficult and take multiple attempts.

        • Will Frame

It’s probably just a matter of perspective. My other phones are a Note 3 and Lumia 1520, but even my girlfriend’s GS3 shoots better pictures. I would have been happy with at least GS3 level photos.

A lot of the issues seem to stem from it never using the flash in low light, then it blows out the photo to overcompensate. When I force the flash on indoors, i get much better pictures.

      • jnt

I can relate to that SO much… the camera is what has kept me from keeping the X as my daily. For others its fine, but a good camera is an important factor *for me* in a phone – and honestly, an inexcusable shortcoming nowadays. Hopefully Woodside is seeing this!

        • Nw_adventure

The camera does blow- But surprisingly the video quality is pretty decent. How does that work, crummy pictures but good video ?

    • Col_Angus

Took this over the weekend on my Moto X and it came out great. It’s not perfect 100% of the time, but no phone is.

    • Tyler

The camera isn’t as bad as you make it out to be. Is it something I would brag about, no but while I was at the auto show all my pictures turned out pretty good. Especially since there are bright lights everywhere. I can upload them if you like.

      • jnt

No I believe you, from personal experience as well. In bright lighting it really does well – but most phones do in bright light. But anything other than bright light and it can really be hit or miss. Plus it always feels so laggy to me – but maybe my perspective is skewed because I keep an iPhone around and my wife uses one, and the viewfinder and shutter lag on that is basically nil.

        • Tyler

I personally wouldn’t call it ideal lighting, lights blinding the phone coming from every direction isn’t necessarily ideal.

    • Michael

Found this on Reddit yesterday, a bunch of amazing pictures taken on the Moto X

  • Sciaid

I still want to know when Photosphere will work on the moto X

    • edoggy

You can install the stock Android camera app to get photoshpere on the MotoX.

      • Daniel Maginnis

I tried this on my mini In the past and it never shows up

        • edoggy

You will have two camera apps, the MotoX camera app (without Photosphere) and the stock Android camera app (with Photosphere). It should work. It’s working on My MotoX with Android 4.4.

      • Flat_Stanley

Does this actually work? I think I tried this, but all I got was force close. Does it still work on 4.4?

        • edoggy

Works on my MotoX with Android 4.4…

  • samosa queen

    Motorola’s on a roll nowadays.

    • ken147

      You could say camera roll.

      amirite?

        Well played.

This should have been a David Caruso meme reply. It would have been perfect.

Beg pardon? The RAZR HD hasnt been updated

      • Ayyy

True. They should just put 100% stock kit kat on there and push it out quickly. It’s not like it’s getting active notifications or anything new. I had to sell mine. Talk about jank.

        • victor mena

Of course! They should! I think I’m gonna switch to the dark side if you know what I mean…*cough cough apple*
