First AOSP Android 4.4 ROMS Popping Up, Nexus 4 Included

With Android 4.4 hitting AOSP yesterday, it was only a matter of time before the first set of stock ROMs started showing up for our favorite devices. An AOSP Nexus 4 ROM was the first to pop into our inboxes late last night, though we are sure there could be more at this point. For now though, we wanted to share this to get you into the comments and sharing others for other devices.

In this ROM, you are looking at the purest of stock ROMs. In fact, it doesn’t even have the new Google Home launcher that was pulled from the Nexus 5 dump. So if you want that beautiful new home replacement, you’ll have to sideload it just like you did last night. This ROM also doesn’t come with Gapps, however, there is a download link for those as well.

This ROM really is all about testing out the first build of Android 4.4. You’ll see new animations, smooth transitions, new lock screen setup, updated menus here and there, Tap & pay settings, Print settings, and even that lovely new Easter Egg. Here are some screenshots:

To flash, you’ll obviously need a rooted Nexus 4 with a custom recovery (Clockwork worked best for me, ran into issues with TWRP). Then at the link below, you’ll find both the AOSP ROM file and the Gapps package. That’s it. Enjoy!

Any other ROMs out there that we should know about?

Best Kitkat ROM for the nexus 4 would be this one. I’ve tired them all and this one has all the features running very smoothly a great kitkat experience. Just download the ROM, it must be flashed with CWM only, tarp will not work, then flash supersu and your game. Check out more in the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507021

I bet Kitkat would look sexy on THE NEW NEXUS 10 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • This got to be the fastest unofficial roll out to date.

    • Bariman43

Not quite, when 4.1 came out for the Google Galaxy Nexus, someone had a partially working build for the Verizon GNex that same night.

  • weedl

i need kitkat in galaxy mini….

  • rthvk

N7 2013 (Flo) users! Which ROM did we use? PA corrupted on two different downloads for me so I downloaded papi92’s ROM. I’ve heard lots of FC complaints on this ROM though, which is why I’m attempting the download again. Which ROMs are you guys running, and more importantly how are they holding up? Thanks guys! 😀

  • feztheforeigner

    That settings icon is fugly…

    • JRUIV

  • Telfon

So, if i flash a 4.4 rom to my Nexus 4, wont my LTE unlock for T-Mobile be null and void?

  • J Dub

It shouldn’t take long for the factory image for the Nexus 4 to be released. I think I’ll just wait.

  • south563

    I get
paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought
I’d be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and
she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I’ve
    been doing, wwwworks77ℂom

XDA has a Port from the N5 that works really well (so far) for the N4. It will take a long time to download the file though

  • Michael Suriel

I loved my note 3 until yesterday

    • Ej McCarty

Give it time my friend. I’m patiently waiting

    • NikkDotCom

Im trying to see if 4.4 can be ported to the Note 3. Its a difficult and tedious task.

    • Not even Nexus owners get upgrades this quick. It’s first created, and then rolled out in stages.

  • Kyle Pinette

    Come on toro!

  • BeLogical

    I need an S4 ROM!

    • KleenDroid

Hey I’m still looking for a Beans or Hyperdrive 4.3 ROM. Hopefully that will be soon.

    • farzad

Kitkat aources are available for some days now,AOSP rom is already used on Nexus 4 so I wonder if any of you heard about a work in progress AOSP rom for S4?ترجمه انگلیسی به فارسی

  • kfath1978

Any toro builds out there? Probably won’t get my N5 until late next week.

    • Christopher Bement

I won’t be getting mine until around Christmas, really hoping we get a build!

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Baldwinguy77 is working on updating Shiny ROM right now, I would assume he will be able to release it in a few days.

      • j

Shiny FTW.. my one and only these days for GNex.

        • ReturnOfTheMack

Yeah I’ve been running CM but as soon as he drops the update I’m making the switch.

          • j

Shiny 4.3 is worlds better than CM in my opinion. When they say “bug free”, they really mean it. CM is dev’d for too many devices I think.

          • palomosan

Waiting on PA to come trough.

          • Blue Sun

Issues getting resolved in CM Nightlies for Toro seemed rare when I was using CM back in Sept. I haven’t missed CM at all since switching to Shiny.

          • jim

            tell me more

          • wh1te_mag1c

I’ve been using Shiny for a long time, but I disagree about the ‘bug free’. Mostly bug free is more like it. But he does iron out the bugs, IME.

        • MustardSeed

Just hoping that ToroPlus gets the same love when it comes to KitKat AOSP roms!

    • Prodrome
  • I’m a little bit ashamed that on the lockscreen they changed the dotted circle to an up arrow and a camera icon in the bottom right corner.

Tell me, can you still swipe from the right to access the camera?

    • turdbogls

some of the leaked videos showed that you could still swipe from the right egde.

    • Razball

    • You can.

The camera icon is purely because a lot of people didn’t know you could swipe i think.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

I can’t wait for the moto x to get some kitkat love. When Kellen, Josh, and MKB all use a moto x, you know you’re doing something right.

    • Adam Truelove

I would totally get a Moto X if I was staying on Verizon. But nothing compares to a Nexus.

      • Daeshaun Griffiths

trusted devices, connect, active display, touchless control + verizon >>> n5

        • i can personally add “unlimited data” to that list. i know not all still can. + in my book.

        • Adam Truelove

You forgot outdated software as you were listing features of the Moto X. Sorry, software is the most important “feature” to me, and for that it’s Nexus all the way. I don’t care about stuff like touchless control and active display if Android is 2 versions behind.

Nifty features can be fun if you actually use them. But a major update of the OS can change the experience entirely often is very significant ways.

      • Lurker

Unless you purchased the Galaxy Nexus.

        • Adam Truelove

          I love mine.

      • lensgrabber

The X is, in my opinion, the cream of the crop of Android phones prior to yesterday for the closest Nexus experience without it being a Nexus. I agree though.. NOTHING compares to a Nexus especially when you have a phone with so much raw power under the hood as the N5. My hard decision is which will be my daily driver once the N5 gets to my door early next week.

Anyone know how the tap to pay will work on devices that have the secure element? I’m interested in a 4.4. ROM for my Note 3 just for the tap to pay feature built in 🙂

    • Kregstrong

Man I would love to see someone tap and pay with a note 3 and possibly using the stylus at the same time Hahahaha, I hate to say it but I think a credit card might be quicker than pulling that massive thing out to tap and pay

      • Justin W

Lol. It would be quicker to pull out a card vs. the Note if you were using the stylus to unlock/enter your pin.

    • David VanHouse

It will probably just ignore the secure element and use the emulation instead

  • donkeykong85

im holding off on 4.4 until its on aokp or pacrom, which means I need to wait until CM gets around to it.

  • Ryan B

Wow, that was fast! Someone didn’t get any sleep.

  • George Rudgers

The Paranoid Android devs have 4.4 AOSP builds for Flo, Grouper and Mako. http://www.paranoidandroid.co/roms/

    • coolsilver

      GAH!!!! Nothing for Deb

      • ReturnOfTheMack

Haha Deb should have a build soon.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I really need to take you guys off my Google Plus notification list… All the Flood of Nexus news yesterday murdered my battery. Didn’t think my battery could die that fast LOL.

I pretty much use G+ notification as my RSS feed

    • HE’S LYING!

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    • jab416171

Mine too, except I get all their twitter notifications twice.

  • any comments on stability?

    • I don’t have a SIM in or anything, but it seems pretty decent.

      • DanSan

u can mail me that nexus 4 so i can test out tmobile in my area. be glad to give you a stability test lol

      • Awesome. May be flashing this in a bit.

      • Carlton Crasher

I’m going to be running without sim so is there an ongoing notification that will be annoying?

  • Giovanni Palazzo

Wasnt the status bar and the navbar supposed to be translucent?

    • That’s part of the Nexus 5 launcher, not the AOSP launcher.

      • Giovanni Palazzo

Oh well. I read somewhere it wasn’t gonna be Nexus 5 only. Curiously it was my most wanted feature! Lol

        • Adam Truelove

It shouldn’t be Nexus 5 only for long. They’re going to release the GEL (Google Experience Launcher) in the play store eventually, I think.

          • Giovanni Palazzo

But as it is only a launcher, will the “bars” be translucent while using other apps? That’s my point when I asked why they aren’t translucent because of KitKat

          • turdbogls

the apps themselves have to specify whether to be translucent or not. they can also specify to go full screen (hide status and nav)
one of the new API’s in KK.
i have confidence the launcher will go to the play store as well.

          • Adam Truelove

But that’s only when you’re using an app. On the home screen the top and bottom bars should be transparent just like on the Nexus 5.

          • turdbogls

technically, the home screen is an app. this app specifies that it should use transparent bars.

          • Greg

This is the nerdiest conversation I’ve read in a while. I mean that in a good way.

          • turdbogls

we all gotta’ nerd out once in a while. 🙂

          • Adam Truelove

I believe I remember reading that in Kit Kat launchers will actually include the bars (top and bottom), so yes they should be transparent once you install the GEL launcher.

      • Adrynalyne

        I don’t think so.

The transparent status bar is part of the SystemUI framework.

It is probably just an overlay adjustment that someone missed.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Got an email right before midnight!… Shipped!…

    • What time did you order? Mine has not shipped yet and I thought I was pretty quick about it.

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

1:03 Central. When the first news came in yesterday about shipment notifications going out I checked the screen shot Kellen posted and it was the same time I ordered but MDT. I was pretty fast about it too

        Though I didn’t choose 2 day shipping.

        • Ok, my order went through at 2:09 EST. So only a couple minutes after you. So it should ship shortly.

      • turdbogls

i got my “package shipped” email at 12:45am.
my order was placed 9 minutes and 45 seconds after launch (assuming it launched right at 11am PST)

  • lmarkov22

I sincerely hope for an S4 safestrap version however I doubt it with the ME7 kernal issues.

    • dazz1996

I feel you, I’m thinking about selling my sgs4 I’m still on me7 with safestrap running GPE rom.

  • bttfpromo

If you use the build linked above, you’ll have problems with the keyboard. Here’s the fix. First, look up how to root Nexus 4 running 4.3. The method is the same. Then download Root Browser or similar.

“I fixed the Keyboard problems by renaming /system/app/LatinImeGoogle.apk to LatinImeGoogle.apk.bak and installing from the Play Store”

    • redbar0n11

      Or just use English?? hahahaha
