Verizon Details DROID DNA Sense 5 and Android 4.2 Update With BlinkFeed, Highlights, and More

droid dna sense 5

Verizon updated their DROID DNA support page recently, detailing a yet-to-be-announced software update that will include Android 4.2 and Sense 5. In the support page, we are seeing evidence of the arrival of BlinkFeed, a new gallery app with video highlights, new 4.2 quick toggles in the notification bar, smart dialer, updated People app, and a new calendar. This update helps bring your DNA into HTC One software territory, you just can’t snap Zoes.

We have no idea when the update is going to rollout, but with all of the details up on Verizon’s site, we can’t imagine that it won’t arrive fairly quickly. Unless of course they mistakenly posted it and will be pulling it shortly after we post this.

HTC did promise that the update to Android 4.3 would be available on the DNA before the end of September – maybe this is it?

Either way, we’ll keep an eye out!

In typical Verizon/HTC fashion, the update will now arrive by the end of the year, not end of Sept:

  • elementbassist

anyone notice that the verizon support page detailing the update has been taken down?

  • RiceCake

    Verizon has pulled the page.

  • ihatevzw

The sense 5 update page has been taken down.

  • Sith77

Still don’t see anything listed n Verizon site even about the update . Here’s the link to their DNA support page and it only shows the last SIM update . http://support.verizonwireless.com/support/system_update/droiddna.html

  • Tyler Casilio

    Cannot wait!

  • Ken

Verizon jumped a version with the Nexus, so I’m pretty sure they can do it here. I believe this is the version HTC submitted to them since they said we will have it by the end of September, so so knows how long they could have been testing it. Also, Veizon has been doing excellent with updates this year. The DNA is the best underrated phone out . Definitely the best phone I’ve had on Verizon.

  • Tyler Casilio

How long do you think? Like next week?

  • EnX$$

htc is here to change baby love the new htc keep it up you guys at HTC

    • fauxshizzl

      Obligatory response.

      • JoshGroff

Yo dawg, I heard you like HTC.

  • Shadowstare

Its coming (hopefully soon) and MAN I can’t wait. I’ve been on stock software (s-on) for 6-8 months…the lack of 4.2 and Sense 5 has been tough. I need this ASAP

  • Dorian Brooks
  • LOLOL Verizon would have a link to Motorola Droid on the page for Droid DNA. Not surprised:

“For more information on the Droid DNA visit verizonwireless.com/droidsupport”

    • Hey yeah, laughed at that as well.

  • Michael Chediak

    Looking forward to the update!!

  • Stephen

meanwhile, im running official cyanogenmod 10.2 android 4.3 on my dna now 😀

if it does come with 4.3 though, that will be nice. But I am personally tired of sense 5 after running it for so long

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

How is that running? I’m strongly considering a DNA to replace my Razr, but kinda worried about the size (its much taller, and button on top seems odd after having it on the side) and how the AOSP ROMs are running, i.e. bugs.

      • Stephen

i’ve loved my DNA since I got it. I mean, the One is available now, and I don’t think the DNA is anymore. But i’ve been running the official cyanogenmod since last night, and it has been flawless actually. working out real well.

        • Dominick White

The dna is still available on Verizon for 49.99 or can get it free on amazon wireless or wirefly

          • Stephen

            ah, the more you know.

          • fauxshizzl

Seriously though. The DNA is the most under rated phone I have seen in recent memory. The specs were WAY ahead of its time. I think the fact it was an exclusive to VZ is why it didn’t get more recognition.

          • Al-Burrit0

Ikr, and way better button placement than the One

          • JoshGroff

Hands down. That’s the only thing that frustrates me about my One. Sadly the DNA doesn’t have the 1700mhz HSPA band.

          • Stephen

i agree, this phone is amazing.

          • Michael Chediak

            I agree, way under rated!!

          • LordRage2

I’ve had the DNA since February, and I have no inclination whatsoever to switch anytime soon. I love this phone.

      • Dominick White

All the 4.2.2 roms I have ran seem stable, the 4.3 one’s seems to have a few minor bugs like Google music needed to be force stop a few times

      • I highly endorse both the DNA and the recently release Official CM 10.2 build for it. Been running it for about 3 days now, and it’s like a brand new phone after being on CM 10.1. Performance is much snappier, thanks to 4.3 improvements, and battery life seems a bit longer.

DNA is still the best buy you can get from Verizon if you’re looking for a good phone to unlock and ROM.

        • JoshGroff

I support this message. Although, I’m running Newt’s Sense 5 build currently.

      • Kyle

Came from Droid X to Razr and now DNA. You get used to the top button in no time. Screen is awesome and runs very smooth with the quad cores going on. I went with it because of the quad core and FREE even knowing the S4 was coming. Didn’t want to fork out any money.

    • mustbepbs

I need updates like this. Custom ROMs are great and all, but I need rock solid stability because I basically run a lot of my business from my phone, and I can’t have any weird bugs happening during the work day.

    • James Hill

Why the DNA is so cheap right now, I will never know. This phone rocks.(DROID DNA)

      • JoshGroff

It’s just the age I guess. Damn good phone though. (especially with S-off)

        • aQuickBit

What’s the battery life like for say a moderate user? The one thing that makes me still want the Droid DNA is the wireless charging. I have it on my HTC 8X and I feel like its a commodity that I cannot give up now which is why an HTC One is a hard upgrade.

          • JoshGroff

Depends on what you consider moderate use. I had no problem getting through a day with it, but i also had like 1-2 hours on screen on average and like 6 hours of music with WiFi/LTE on all day. Usually got around 16-24 hours battery life.

I also mainly kept it to Sense 5, so battery life should be noticeably better on CM.

    • ビッググリーン

send me the link to the official. All I see is unofficial 10.2

    • How did you do it? I still can’t find a reliable method. {{-_-}}

  • Justtyn Hutcheson

The page doesn’t say anything about 4.2 or 4.3 that I can see.
So, the reasonable assumption is that this is 4.3, not 4.2.

    • Adrynalyne

4.3 is by no means a reasonable assumption. In fact, I’m willing to bet whatever is in my wallet that it is not 4.3.

      • Justtyn Hutcheson

Well, the President of HTC USA tweeted that all US HTC devices including the DNA would have 4.3 by the end of September. This update falls within the specified time period. Considering that it would be ridiculous to have two version updates twice within weeks of each other, the reasonable assumption is that this update is to Sense 5 and Android 4.3.

        • Adrynalyne

President of HTC USA doesn’t decide Verizon’s time schedule unfortunately.

You can pretty much assume any tweet about updates from an OEM doesn’t apply to Verizon devices.

          • Justtyn Hutcheson

Schedule no, but he does decide what versions to submit for approval. 🙂

          • Adrynalyne

That may be, but Verizon doesn’t test quickly. They have probably had whatever version this is for several months.

          • gambit07

Except that the DNA is a Verizon exclusive device. So I’m pretty sure you can assume it applies directly to it given HTC’s president would have direct communication with VZW on these updates as well.

          • Adrynalyne

Hey if it is 4.3, great. However HTC has a poor track record of being accurate with statements.

          • Adrynalyne

Those who hate the truth downvote. Keep it coming, chumps.

  • WickedToby741

I find it hard to believe that HTC will have 4.3 out to the Verizon One and the DNA before the Galaxy Nexus gets it.

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

The Verizon One is lagging behind since it already has 4.2.2. However, the fact that the DNA will have 4.3 before the GNex OTA is a sad state of affairs indeed.

      • Chippah

Galaxy Nexus was erased from Verizon existence a long time ago like stalin..

      • WickedToby741

I don’t think that will be the case. I think HTC is far too optimistic on when they’ll be releasing 4.3 to their Verizon phones. Despite Verizon’s apparent dislike for the Galaxy Nexus, it still should be the first phone to receive 4.3. I think the DNA will receive 4.2 shortly and it’ll be a while before you see 4.3. I’ll be surprised if it’s this year.

        • Justtyn Hutcheson

HTC is very confident in their ability to get 4.3 on all of the US HTC Ones and DNA by the end of the month. 4.3 on the DNA specifically, not 4.2.x. That’s what I was told at least by someone who has quite a bit of knowledge on the subject.

          • Adrynalyne

They were confident about getting the Thunderbolt quickly updated to ICS as well. We all saw how that went.

        • Eric R.

I hope its before the iPhone 5S(Same) release to show all my iOS friends how much more awesome my phone is DNA

        • michael arazan

I have a GNex, I could care less about 4.3, Just as long as I get 4.4 KitKat in a timely matter

    • ITGuy11

Verizon hates the Gnex and its users with a passion. The open nature of Nexus phones goes against everything that vzw stands for….

    • Irony…

  • big007hed

    Yes yes yes please!

  • Dominick White

Well i will wait for the root version when it comes out

  • macewank

    4.2 != 4.3 …. what’s going on here?

    • panicswhenubered

ah yes, Android 4.2. I remember back when I had that…

    • gambit07

I’m not sure where they got 4.2 since the page doesn’t say anything about it being 4.2 or 4.3. Hopefully it is 4.3. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have the Zoe feature either, since the ported 4.2.2 sense 5 roms were able to make it work..

      • Justtyn Hutcheson

Zoes are one of the selling points for the HTC One, so I can see it being left out on the DNA. It sucks, but its at least understandable.

        • Fiorta

It’s not understandable as I can take Zoe’s on my DNA right now flawlessly.

          • gambit07

Yeah, the moving gallery feature for Zoe is awesome too.

          • Justtyn Hutcheson

            See my edit above 🙂

        • gambit07

Maybe so. Ah well, I’m sure the dev roms can port it easily enough.
