Tuesday Poll: Are You Protecting Your Smartphone?

spigen ultra thin air galaxy s4

It’s 2013, smartphones have grown to outrageous sizes, prices certainly haven’t decreased, and we’re using them even more. So we’re curious, are you still protecting your phone? Or should we say, are you protecting your technological investment? With 2-year contracts still in existence, we know that many of you have jumped on subsidized phone deals because the thought of buying a phone at full retail can give anyone a migraine. So that also means that you likely aren’t interested in forking out $650 dollars should an accident take your phone’s life. It’s been a while since we asked, but we’d love to know how you are preserving your phone.

Are you using some form of protection? Case? Screen protector? If so, be sure to tell us what you’ve chosen in the comments.

Nakey is just better. Right? The most covering up I do is maybe a screen protector.

  • flosserelli

Screen protector + gelaskin on the back.

  • yungqb7

Blue clone army case from cruzerlite and clear screen protector from GreatShield for my GS4

  • dmagicp

I put my phone inside an ultra thin seidio case and it doesn’t look like there is a case on it. Every now and then I take it out of the case to fondle it. I really just use the case for the resale value, but I have 2 lines on my Verizon account along with a massive discount due to my employer being a Verizon partner, so I can upgrade every 12 months instead of every 24. Every time I take my phone out of the case, it looks so thin and smooth that I may just start leaving it out. Lol!

    • I’m on the same boat! Ultra thin cases and take them off every few days just to keep it clean for resale value. I also get an upgrade every 8-12 months so keeping them in good condition is crucial.

  • Although I use a case and screen protector, I usually get some very nice minimal cases on eBay for cheap. I usually buy the ones that are ultra thin but still cover just around the corners for those small drops. Also, I get cases the color of the phone, frosted for white, or smoked for black phones so you can still see the design of the phone. Also, the screen protectors come in packs of 6 for $1.50 so it’s easy to go through screen protectors and keeping them scratch free. I’m usually at the beach or at sand volleyball courts at least 5 days a week so it’s nice to keep that sand away from the screen since those micro-scratches become quite visible when there is many of them.

  • I spent $700 for this off contact Galaxy S4, I gotta protect it!

  • paul_cus

I would never ruin how the phone was intended to look and feel. Living on the edge with no case or screen protector. Ever.

  • Miguelfronteras

this is the one for my Galaxy S4 – http://youtu.be/XV84rx26C-A

  • Miguelfronteras

this is the amazing case I use for my Galaxy S3 – http://youtu.be/Tf3MHi2TF6g

  • ckeegan

I always “roll naked”, but damn if I didn’t crack the screen on my S4 three hours ago! Sitting on a sidewalk, watching my kids ride bike. Damn thing slid out of my pocket, fell 3 inchea facedown on the sidewalk and cracked the screen. 3 f’n inches!

I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised by how many smartphone owners go commando.

  • Brittany N

I use a uag case and screen protector on my note 2 I have had a case on every smartphone I have owned (i actually have way more then I need) I Dont just like cases for protection but for a better grip on the phone and I Dont mind a lil extra weight

Note 2. Spigen SGP Steinheil protector, Body Glove slim TPU case.

  • areffes

I am extraordinarily careful with my phone. One day fate decided to teach me a $600 lesson that I’m not infallible. Never gonna be that stupid again. Won’t even take a new phone out of the box without a screen protector and case on it now! It’s just not worth the risk. I love Nillikin stuff but they don’t make for every phone

  • umataro42

I use the Diztronic TPU gel case on my GNex for everyday use and the Trident Kracken case when I travel, since I often visit friends or family with kids, and it has a kickstand if I want to watch anything on it.

  • Ted Ellis

Using the DodoCase Durables case. For those who are saying “cases aren’t sexy” haven’t seen or used this case. Waxed canvas and leather. Looks like something my Grandfather would carry tools in.

    A pretty darn awesome case.

  • David Spearing

I’m on T-Mobile with my S4 and I protect it with a Seidio Surface case and the matte anti-glare and fingerprint screen protectors from Tech Armor. Since I have no contract I like to swap out phones as I see something else I like better, So it’s all about the resale value for me.

  • noc007

Naked for the most part. I had a Seidio case for my D1 back in the day, but it broke on me without a fall. They said they’d warranty it, but I didn’t feel like paying shipping and ran naked since. I’ve had a D3 and D4 naked. One of them I dropped a bunch without a problem onto floors that weren’t concrete or asphalt. I haven’t dropped my D4 in months now.

The wife got a Note2 recently and we put a case on that since she’s prone to dropping her phone when she’s out and about and that smooth plastic is asking for it. Her D2G has survived a few falls onto hard surfaces, but has sustained some blemishes without cracking the screen.

I’m planning on getting a Note3 when it comes out and I’ll probably put a case on it. Sammy’s recent phones are too slippery.

  • John Davids

Ghost armor should be an option. Minimal to average protection from day-to-day use, but still get the sexy factor of naked.

  • BigFriend

HTC One with a Cimo bumper case. Back is clear so at least it shows off the sexy back of the One. If I went naked, I would be too scared of the shredding done by a slide across asphalt. And I’m talking about the phone…er…yeah.

  • sucram6791

i use squaretrade so i don’t need a case or screen protector

  • linkman88

Urban Armour Gear case is the only case that i have ever liked for my phone, otherwise I go nude.

  • steveP

Honestly, I got tired of the damn rubberized case getting stuck in my pocket. Plus killing the lines of the phone with something like an otterbox is dumb.

  • Tyler

I like my phones naked … just like my women.

    • Yogi

However I like my salad dressed

  • Sneeks

Meh I have best buy insurance so I can break it on purpose and get a another one
Nothing like a case to take away from the hard work and design, plus it’s easier to sell once you get a new one 😉

  • akrish

  • Ccrazyman

Well, I did go naked when I had my DROID DNA. However I dropped it getting out of the car, now I have an Outter box Defender case for my S3,and a UAG case.

    My poor DNA

  • Chris Stuart

My GS3 has an aluminum bumper with a carbon fiber like back. Feels better than naked in hand, looks more masculine, and gives some protection.

  • joejoe5709

Naked. Why cover up such beauty? Sure, she’s got some scratches, nicks, and the occasional ding. She’ll never be as shiny as she was when new but that’s fine. She’s mine and she’s got some character. And in two years I’ll trade her our for a new one and rough her up just the same. When I look at my old ones, I have fond memories and all the damage is a part of those memories. Sort of like rough love ya know? All the above applies to my wife as well. Snap! 😉 Ha.

In all seriousness, I usually start out with a screen protector only – thinking “This time I’ll keep my screen scratch free!” Buuut then after about six months I get sick of it and tear it off anyway.

    • Timothy McGovern

      Do you beat your wife?

      • joejoe5709

Lol. C’mon… Just trying to be funny. Sorry that it’s lost on you. No I don’t beat my wife. And I’m also not going to trade her out in 2 years. She does have character and she’s certainly not new anymore. That part is true. 😉

  • I’ve got the GS4 suited up in a Cruzerlite Green Android Army case. But I just got a Jison flip cover case that is quite nice. So I will be using it from now on. I have an eBay special screen protector.

I wish I wouldn’t need a case or anything with the phone. I love the look and feel without it having a case. But with a 3 year old around… Its pretty much a need to have it protected.

  • Always rolled commando > dropped my Bionic on its top left corner > never going commando again.
(hate screen protectors though – are they getting any better?)

  • Prince Campbell III

I have a white Note 2, I just got a nice white TPU case for it and I have the Zagg Privacy screen protector. I have been known to drop my phone so I got a case for it. Also I don’t want to be paying more to replace my phone when I could have kept it from getting damaged with a case.

  • Wolf0491

I hate cases. I don’t even buy phones subsidized anyway.
My Xperia Z was way to beautiful put in a case. I actually dropped for first time other day and screen isn’thbroken at all and just a scuff on one edge so this thing is a pretty solid phone!

  • Aaron

I use a nice TPU case to cover up the scratches and small chips on my phone ..

  • Ryan Stewart

Bareback unless I am taking part in a high risk activity, then I put on the thinnest protection I can get.

I also rarely put a case on the phone.

  • Kevin

I recommend Best Buy’s Geek Squad Protection, for $10 a month you can roll naked and replace your phone unlimited number of times if you break it with no deductible

  • Raven

I roll naked with my Droid 4. You just can’t beat good old Motorola build quality. My phone has been dropped twice onto concrete (not by me) and despite having a good rough dent in 2 of its corners it still works perfectly.

  • Matt Rose

What kind of case is on the phone in the picture? Love the color.

    • Freedoooom

      Spigen Ultra Thin Air.

  • ahhh yes

I have always rolled naked until the 2nd week of Nexus 4. dropped on sidewalk and shattered the screen it was $150 to replace w/ installation. have a bumper ever since and hate it. want to roll naked again…maybe next phone.

  • Austin

I use a case when I go out with my phone, but I go naked at home. Nothing like slipping the case off your phone and feeling it’s sleek exterior in your hand after a long day.

  • tomn1ce

I have my G-Nexus wrapped up in a Diztronic Matte Black Flexible TPU case
and with a Halo Screen Protector. A scratch appeared on my OG Droid and I didn’t want the same thing to happen to my G-Nexus. I have had my the G-Nexus for 1.5 years and is still in mint condition…

  • Caleb Loop

Nexus 4. got it the day it came out. Naked since day one. dropped it about a million times and not a scratch on it.

  • Satake Yoshinobu

I rolled naked thinking, “I’ll never drop my phone like that!” Two drops later, one from shoulder height, made my phone almost completely unusuable. Nope, not gonna do that again.

  • droidftw

Naked. If I need to sell the device I get a warranty replacement before hand.

  • tanknspank

Have a Neo Hybrid case and glass screen protector. LOVE the glass screen protector. Totally worth it.

  • Ray Gray

I treat cases as shoes I take my case off when I get in the house and put my case on when I leave the house

    • Brandon Golway

What’s funny is I started doing the same thing with my S4. I hate cases but keep a slim bumper style case on it when I’m out and about, but when I’m in a place where drops can’t hurt it, I take the case off.

  • Bobby Cornwell

I keep a case on my phone. I baby my phones to death but when I set my phone down on a table or wherever, I want to ensure I don’t get any scratches on it

Buy the Verizon protection plan. the $100 deductible sucks but cheaper than $700. I “drop” my phone once a year.

  • dis1tallazn

I only use a case for my s4 because of the horribly cheap feeling back plate.

  • Always naked. Cases just overheat (majority of the time).
