Download: DROID RAZR Jelly Bean Official Update for Those Running the X-Mas Build

new razr jb

I’m really starting to like this “new” Motorola. First, they killed off almost all Moto bloatware in the new Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) update for the DROID RAZR and replaced most of it with stock Android apps. Second, they are making sure to take care of anyone who received the accidental X-mas Eve Jelly Bean update (98.72.8) on their RAZR or RAZR MAXX, by providing a 40MB file that jumps users up to the official 98.72.16. That’s right, no need to flash back to 4.0.4 or some older build.

Thanks to a tester of the software, we now have the file for flashing. For those of you wondering when you would be upgraded off of the older build of JB, that time is now.

*You have to be running the X-mas Jelly Bean build of 98.72.8 in order to use this file. If you are coming from 4.0.4, this will not work. This is only for those that were part of the accidental update group who need to get to the current build of Android 4.1.2.

*AGAIN, this update is for those running 98.72.8 only.

*You do not need to be rooted to do this. 100% stock is the game. In fact, you don’t even need a computer – download file to phone, move to SD card and follow instructions.

*If you are running official Ice Cream Sandwich (6.16.211), your update file is here.

1.  Download and place this file on your external storage (SD card):

Blur_Version.98.72.8.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip [mirror]

2.  Turn your phone off and boot into recovery.

*With phone off, hold down both Volume Down and Up plus Power until you get to the boot menu. Press Volume Down to highlight “Recovery.” Press Volume Up to select it.

*Once you see the Android and exclamation point, press both Volume Up and Down at the same time.

3.  In recovery, choose “apply update from external storage.”

*Highlight using Volume Down, select using Power.

4.  Find the 98.72.8 file that you downloaded above and select it.
5.  Watch the update install!

The file for the update from Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean has not been posted anywhere that I’ve seen. Once it goes up, we’ll be sure to share it.

Update:  The update from Ice Cream Sandwich (6.16.211) can be found here.

Have lost the microphone function on the keyboard when Jelly Bean was downloaded. How to return the microphone?

  • sammie

    where is the mute option?

  • Rahul Jain

Just got a 40 mb update from the xmas build i had installed manually.. I’ve lost root.. Is there anyway i can root now.. cant seem to find the answer anywhere..

  • pissed-off

This upgrade disables wifi on (some?) non-rooted devices. FoxFi starts, but phone checks “subscriptions” then returns a messabe to call Verizon. This may only impact plans with an unlimited data plan.

  • mofo

Thank you for this post. I have the christimas build I got OTA. I then successfully rooted. Got OTA notification for this update but failed several times. Factory reset and still got fail. Tried this method and am getting a fail on books.apk (factory reset again and still failed on the books.apk) Will try to see if i can get an update to books off play (am assuming this is google books) and will retry.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    • mofo

Same error, downloaded google books off play store.
assert failed: apply_patch_check (“system/app/books.apk”, hash values Installation aborted.

  • Help it wont’ work!!! It says assert failed: apply_paych_check(“/system/app/GoogleBackupTransport.apk”, than a bunch of random letters and number

  • tad1073

I keep getting this error message assert failed: apply_patch_check(“system/app/ChromeWithBrowser.apk”, then a bunch of numbers and letters.

  • I keep getting Installation aborted. I’ve seen this issue with a few of you all below. But what was done to get around this issue??

  • NEO Stephens

Still no update, how do I get this?

  • Andy Lee

I just did the manual update from the Xmas leak…but it seems like the update is exactly same as the leak version; especially, the updates didn’t kill any bloatwares at all…I still have the motocast and the stock browser… not sure what did I do wrong…

  • Gary Jones, JR.

I got my Razr Maxx not long after release. So I’ve gone from gingerbread to ICS, to the Christmas Eve JB to this build and the most dramatic change I’ve noticed with this build is the battery life. I am a heavy user and the battery life appears to have increased significantly.

  • Gary Jones, JR.

I am using the Christmas leak, rooted, running superSU and Titanium backup. I’d like to install this update but don’t want to risk losing root. Any advice? I am pretty new to this.

    • Gary Jones, JR.

Well, I decided to just go for it. Ran the update, did NOT lose root. In fact, the update went quickly and had zero errors. I am thrilled.

  • RMS355

I have done this many times, but for some reason it won’t let me get into recovery. I hold power, volume up/down, and it reboots. Then I select recovery, droid with ‘!’ comes up, I hit volume up/down, nothing. I hold, I press, nothing works. I’ve held it up to 30 secs. This used to work for me. I am running 98.72.8 with safestrap. Anybody have any ideas? Any help is welcome! Thanks!

    • RMS355

Never mind. Finally got it to work. I don’t know why it wasn’t. I had to hold it forever!

      • KGS

I’m having the same problem. What did you hold forever?

  • Getting the following error when loading this come from the xmas update: assert failed: (/system/app/Kindle.apk) than a bunch of numbers. Kindle is installed so not sure why i am having a issue. any suggestions?

  • Having an issue…. I didn’t get the xmas update but downloaded it and installed it…. Now I am trying to update to the latest 4.1.2 however once in recovery, and selecting the install file… It keeps on aborting the installation.. any help?

  • Heartless12

thanks for the post kellex because waiting on Verizon is ridiculous and nobody has time for that …..although the Christmas build was good but it wasn’t great it was a bit choppy at times and had a few bugs

  • teej

Primary link to the .211 file turned out to be ~40MB. :S
The mirror link appears to be the appropriate ~340MB file, and is still downloading…

  • sredford

got the Jelly bean update, now verizon has blocked my fox-fi wireless hotspot function. Verizon wants another $30.00/month to use it. Sprint or ATT, I may be coming.

    • Sankyou

It’s probably more an issue with Fox-Fi and Jellybean. There are many other ways of getting tethering in JB but rooting may be necessary.

  • RoadsterHD1

Does this take you off the OTA trail?

  • Capt. Crunch

Any way to get the JB leak homescreen. I can’t update with the one i replaced it with.

    • Marikel

Its still the same exact home screen from ICS… they never changed it, which sucks cuz things don’t move out of the way 🙁

      • Isn’t that in 4.2 tho?

        • Marikel

That was a new feature in 4.1

      • J. Gilbertson

Didn’t they used to move out of the way in the Razr Gingerbread build? I’m pretty sure I remember this and was disappointed about that in ICS.

        • Marikel

I don’t remember. I only had the phone for about a month before the ICS update came out so I don’t remember much. I still think they should’ve added those features to the launcher. They shouldn’t release an update with the launcher from the previous version of android. Makes it feel like they didn’t care much about it.

  • apackofmonkeys

Wow, I read about this here on Droid-Life, then turned on my phone to go download the provided file- only to find I already had an official OTA update notification waiting for me! Installing now. My phone’s been a little slow since installing the Xmas leak, hopefully this final official build will speed it up a bit.

  • JOSH A

  • Does anyone know the difference between the xmas build and this build? They seem the exact same to me…

    • Marikel

Same here… probably some changes in coding and stuff. I can’t see the slightest difference, not even in performance.

      • yeah, i was hoping for the quick reply text messaging and the circle widget and quick settings… apparently that is only for the M and HD series

  • Jordan Egbert

You don’t even need to do it manually. I have the Xmas build and I had an auto update today.

  • Stew

Why does the name of the file show 98.72.8 when it is supposed to be 98.72.16?

    • Justin Winker

Moto’s builds are named for the build they are meant to be applied to, I.e. those on 4.0.4 would have that build number in the file name, while those on the Christmas build would have that build number in the file name.

  • Sankyou

Ok so from latest safestrap this is what I did:
    Switched to stock rom
    Updated SuperSU
In Voodoo deleted backup, re-backed up, unrooted, and restored root

Followed steps to update to new ROM from Xmas leak
Rebooted and restored root through voodoo.

It all worked and I still have safestrap installed. I can confirm that the only rom I tried (Jellywiz) did not work. No big surprise as it was designed for the leak.

    • I got so excited to update I didn’t unroot, ota, etc. Now am not rooted. Guess I’ll have to wait a few days huh? Can still get it to safe strap though. Any ideas/workaround?

  • Bryan

If I am rooted with SuperSU and want to keep root, do I just check the “Survival Mode” option and then install this update? If there is more to it, can someone point me to a guide for this? This is the first OTA I have done with root, so I am not sure what to do to keep it. It looks like Voodoo was used before SuperSU added this functionality.

    • Bryan

I just decided to use Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, protected root, temp unroot and then restored root a couple of times and installed the update. Restored root and I am good to go. Pretty easy process!

  • C-Law

Is there a change log from the Christmas build to this?

  • Any idea why my system would say instalation aborted?

    • Sankyou

If you froze any stock apps. Usually you would need to fastboot back to a pure stock to fix the error but if you have done anything obvious that modifies the stock rom too much – that’s what usually causes issues.

      • I’m not rooted or anything, but i did disable a few stock apps. So I just enabled them, should that fix my problem?

        • Sankyou

Yes, there’s a good chance that was it.

        • Sankyou

Oh actually no, it’s doubtful. Disabling just hides them so I doubt that matters. Probably just need to wipe the phone since you’re on stock anyway. Also you should try re-downloading the file just to make sure.

  • Marikel

Just got the notifocation!! (: I’m at school so I’ll download it later. Sooo happy hope it comes with the circles widget.

    • Detonation

It does not. But you can get it by installing the version from the Razr M/HD

      • Marikel

Just installed the update. Can’t see the slightest difference from the X-Mas build :/

  • Ronnie

will this update also work on the razr maxx HD?

    • Luke

  • John Jenness

Complete. The only issue now is all the damn Verizon bloatware.

  • AlexM1910

Hello I´m form Germany. Can I install this update without any problems?

    • It’s almost certainly for the US Verizon version of the phone only.

  • Sankyou

Updating now. Have newest safestrap and switched to stock rom. Will report how it goes.

  • Pavel Lukyanchykov

I wander what’s new in this update for me? X-mas Jelly Bean runs just fine, bloatware frozen with TitaniumBackup… why bother? =)

  • While this may be officially from Moto, it may not the “Official” JB build. It’s a soak test of the build, which means it COULD change. Just fyi.

    • apackofmonkeys

I’m not a member of whatever I’m supposed to be to receive the soak test, but got the official OTA notification a few minutes ago. We’re definitely past soak test stage.

  • Is this an official release? I can’t seem to pull it. I never got the one around Xmas time either.

    • Detonation

Right now it’s only going out to soak test members.

  • ScottzDroid

While in recovery after selecting apply update from external storage I chose the 98.72.8 and got a list of options

    Choose a package to install:

    What do I chose?

    • Guest

you must’ve downloaded it incorrectly or something….once you choose apply from external storage it give you the options of files on your sd card….choose the Blur and it starts up right away and doesn’t give you further options….mine is downloading now.

      • ScottzDroid

Thanks. I unzipped the file before downloading it. Just downloading the file without unzipping worked perfectly

    • Guest

did you unzip it before you moved to sd card, cause you’re not supposed to…

      • ScottzDroid

That is exactly what I did incorrectly. My computer auto unzipped it. I just installed the unzipped version and it is working like it should. Thanks

      • ScottzDroid

I meant that I originally downloaded the file unzipped. I downloaded the file without unzipping it and it is working Thanks again

  • JoeN

Please do the same for the Bionic when JB comes, kernel isn’t that different to the RAZR 🙂

  • Knlegend1

Well doesn’t that suck for me. I guess not I wasn’t on Jelly Bean anyways lol

  • Detonation
  • Hedson Ralston

Hey guys i have the 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 file. Just updated my girls and I. I actually pulled the ICS to JB file from hers, I was one the Christmas update. Currently uploading it to my box for future use.

    • Hedson Ralston

Also confirmed that Voodoo works from both ICS and JB previous builds.

  • John Jenness

Again…wow. Two really great things coming out of the merger in a single day!

  • rda990

Used VooDoo to keep root coming from 98.72.8 to .16, restored root right after the update. Just make sure to restore all frozen .apk’s and any other changes you have done with root. Still trying to figure out the what changed from .8 to .16. I think there is a Gallery app that wasn’t in .16, can’t remember.

  • phaeacian

It’s like Christmas all over again! Thanks DL!!!

    • Kieron Quinn

Literally. I see what you did there 😉

  • Detonation

Cannot confirm this myself yet, but using Voodoo Rootkeeper (or a similar app) will allow you to keep root.

  • KleenDroid

  • Verizon

You are the best Kellex! Thanks for posting this!

    • J. Gilbertson

Username still makes me giggle. Especially in regards to this post.

      • Verizon

I’m glad some can understand that it is a joke (especially with the avatar). You can’t imagine how many people have accused me of being a Verizon employee/plant.

        • Hah, I love it as well.
