Original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX Jelly Bean Soak Test About to Go Down

razr jelly bean update

The original DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX are about to officially receive Jelly Bean. According to invites that are going out to members of the Motorola Feedback Network, testing for the update should start shortly.

The timing of this test fits right in line with Motorola’s Q1 schedule and is only two months after a Jelly Bean build was accidentally pushed to a number of handsets. We went hands-on with that update in case you were wondering what to expect.

Once the test starts, assuming everything goes well, the official push to all devices from Verizon and Moto shouldn’t be far out.

Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are inviting owners of the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR Maxx on Verizon to participate in an early preview of a new Jelly Bean software release, and provide feedback.  If you are not currently using a Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR Maxx on Verizon, please excuse and ignore this email.

Click this link — https://www.surveymonkey.com/— to take the enrollment survey if you wish to take part. Note that you must be a member in good standing of the Motorola Owners’ Forums to be included. The registration window could close without notice so please respond as quickly as possible.

This is a confidential test under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this on any public sites.

Thanks — please understand that start times are always fluid. We ask for your patience if you register but don’t hear from us right away.

Yeah, buddy.

Cheers R, M, C, A, E, T, C and D!

  • Donald Sweeper

I updated my Razr in december do I need the new update

  • huskerhog

I am receiving my Jelly Bean update NOW!

  • asshat

    nothing here yet either

    • JellyBelly

I read a comment on XDA stating it was cancelled? Failed to list a source though.

      • Guest

        What is XDA?

This will show you approx. or if your Phone will be updated.

  • wtf

So uh its been a week now and no jelly what gives?

  • Your device is up to date! No update is necessary at this time.

Your device is up to date! No update is necessary at this time.

  • does anyone have the zip for the soak test? i know its against their confidentiality agreement, but who cares? Verizon is a freakin update hog

  • So has it started yet? I took part in the soak test to ics paddy time.

  • Scott H

Come on 4.2 – I want me some DashClock!

  • I had a Droid RAZR MAXX, accidentally dropped it one too many times and cracked both the Gorilla Glass and internal LCD, No insurance, not covered by warranty. I was so stoked for Jelly Bean on it, I test drove every update on the Droid X on the feedback network program, and I was happy to see the enail from MFN today.
Except I already bought an HTC DNA on ebay, arriving Wednesday. Oh well 🙂

    • droidrazredge

I received an email and I’ve been meaning to ask someone that has already participated in prior feedback network programs regarding the chances of being picked to participate once filling out the Feedback Network Program invitation email.

      • Depends on their SOAK test size. But like I said, when I had the original Droid X I got picked to test Gingerbread, and Ice Cream Sandwich, and a couple of the bigger bugfix updates. And now being picked for a RAZR update I’d say I’m pretty lucky to get picked so much, doesn’t seem too too exclusive if you sign up. If you got an invite to the SOAK test you’re good, and if you provide good feedback (constructive, not necessarily positive) in the Feedback Forums, you may have a good chance of being picked in the future.

  • Shadowcell

Better late than never I’d say. This JB leak build has my phone plagued with home screen crashing and sluggish performance.

  • pickle head

  • shannon

I hope we get the launcher that be on the droid razr m

  • Tom Z

The fact that this finally released, gives me hope that my Razr HD Maxx will get 4.2…

  • I got the invite!! However, I’m running the JB leak so who knows if I will actually get the push.

  • I’m quite curious if this will be any different from the leak. I have an annoying issue with my SMS’s where it says they’re sending, but I don’t know if they actually are or not. Once in a while some of them do go through, but I’ve noticed there have been times they don’t. I’m rooted now and looking for a fix but no luck yet. I just hope if this is better, I can easily switch to this from my current build.

  • Tech Pro

Does new JB take ATT and T Mobile SIM? Not interested if not.

    • bananatroll

      • Tech Pro

        Too bad.

  • Capt. Crunch

Make sure to pull the update so everyone can try it out.

  • mustbepbs

Come on Droid 4! Can’t be far behind..

    • I know my wife was asking about her Droid 4 when she saw the message come through!

    • Raven

My thoughts exactly. My wife and I are still using our venerable old Droid 4’s, but I honestly never thought that they would see Jellybean. But, being that they are essentially the same phone as the OG Droid RAZR with a keyboard attached, I now have some hope.

      • Unfortunately, they aren’t the same phone. They look the same, but the Droid 4 is actually “older” than the RAZR. They just held off on releasing it. It has a different modem and a couple of other HW discrepancies Fear not, they announced that you will for sure get it. It’s just not a simple port of the RAZR/RAXRMAXX version. Hang in there, buddy! 😀

    • Straight from Motorola’s Update List:

DROID 4: Will receive update, no timeframe given – likely Q1 2013

  • Sean Bello

so this will put the OG on the same version as the gNex. effing grand. ugh.

    • Bionic

Exactly why google owned motorola rules.

    • Diablo81588

This is actually a newer version than the Gnex is officially running.

  • cmonnats

I saw the words ‘Original DROID’ and ‘Jelly Bean’ in the same post and got totally excited for a second there…

    • Bionic

LOL imagine a single core phone clocked at 800mhz trying to run jelly bean. No thanks.

      • Diablo81588

The OG Droid was clocked at 533mhz stock if I’m not mistaken.

      • Im running JB Rom on my OG Droid and it works just fine. And yes, as Diablo said, its actually underclocked to below 600mhz

    • jeesung

search on XDA. there’s a working CM10.0 port.

it’s a bit laggy. i prefer the ICS port from the same dev (kfazz)

  • Hank

That is one beautiful shot of the phone?

    • dbam987

It looks very sharp from the angle. And smudge free. :p

  • dave

I’ve heard battery life was diminished when these got ICS. It would stink if it got worse with JB.

    • huskerhog

I’ve heard that battery life is MUCH improved with JB.

    • Bionic

      Wrong. It’s even better.

  • LTE4G

Even better if the release is earlier then the leak

  • kixofmyg0t

Wouldn’t this make the OG RAZR running a more recent version of Android than the Galaxy Nexus?

    • Mack

Unfortunately there are a few phones running a more recent version than a stock G-Nex.

  • Will foxfi still work with this? y/n?

    • Tyler James

According to the FoxFi website, 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or later is not supported on the R, or RMAXX for Wi-Fi tethering. As far as I know, the other modes will still work. Won’t know for sure until the official update comes out to test.

They do mention on their website that Wi-Fi might still be possible in future updates. However, now that it is PDANet+, I am not sure how accurate that is.

    • Bionic

It does not work on the RAZR M unless you use the bluetooth option.

    • Diablo81588

Why would you use foxfi on a motorola phone to tether? The entitlement hack still works apparently, even on JB. Of course, you have to be rooted, but there’s a simple one click tool for that on JB builds.

      • bananatroll

tethering solutions have for the most part been completely disabled on every build of JB released – and that is including non verizon handsets

        • Diablo81588

Thats not true. As I previously said, it works on the leaked JB build for the OG Droid RAZR.

  • Does anyone know if this will be JB 4.1 or 4.2? I know the leak was 4.1 but maybe they will surprise us with a 4.2 miracle!

    • Bionic

      It’s 4.1 for sure

      • Will this build include the circle widget?

        • Bionic

          I wouldn’t know

        • Fieldy

I could be wrong, but I believe the Circle widget is for Razr M and newer phones on Verizon.

          • Bionic

        • favio cuervo

if you want the circle clock widgets here is the play link:

          • jeesung

looks similar, but not the same functionality.

        • Mark Mann

there is a way, if you’re rooted, to get the official motorola circle widget. the leak didn’t include it, i doubt this one will either…use the search box on this website and search for atrix hd widget

    • Austin Warren

      good joke buddy

  • GigaJake

OG Razr huh? All they have to do is add support for a qwerty keyboard and the Droid 4 should be in ship shape or close to it, right? Why do I have a feeling I’ll be waiting for a long time…

    • john

there’s a completely new RIL code on jelly bean, so i don’t now what the hell that is but i understand it messes up hw keyboard drivers. That’s why photon q jb is not ready yet an insider told me.

      • Bionic

I haven’t accessed the community who knows about this stuff in a while but last I heard Droid 4 would immediately follow the Razr family

  • miked1953

Can you send the link, I was asleep when I clicked on the message, and now I can’t find it on my phone. I am amember of the Moto forum. Thanks in advance.

  • Ashton Sloane

HA! That was real? Marked it as phishing. Whoops!

  • mike jones

so happy to take part in the soak test got my invite

    • Tyler James

I guess you missed the memo on the message…

“This is a confidential test under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this on any public sites.”

At least DL did not post the complete link to the registration. You could have just left it as “got my invite.”

    • Doug Wing

That link will trace back to your moto forums account. Everyone gets a different link for the survey. This is how they can see who is breaking the NDA you agree to.

      • mike jones

idc i have a gs3 dumbass i been sold my razr

  • shehippie

*does the happy old lady dance*

    • Lucky Armpit

If I knew how to dance, I’d dance with you. In the meantime, I’ll just pray to the Update Gods that the soak test goes smoothly so there are no further delays.
And yes, I was the one complaining just last week about Moto meeting the Q1 deadline. 😛 So here’s a question… once Moto signs off, do we still have to wait for Verizon’s “Enhanced and thorough” testing process?

      • shehippie

No one ever really knows. I have been in a soak where the update was pushed to the public while we were all still “testing”. lol

  • Jonathan Levin

So how long after we take the survey does the soak test actually go out?

    • Justin Winker

When I did mine with the Bionic, it was about a week after I registered that the update was pushed to my device. I would assume the same with this – a good estimate would be next weekend.

    • Bionic

Next Friday is likely. Motorola likes to do these over the weekend starting on Fridays at 5pm. Based on past soak tests I’ve been in.

Verizon would be getting even more criticism if this update is the exact same build as the accidental push.

    • that won’t happen as the accidential push was still on the ics kernel. the soak survey specifically asked if you were on the latest ICS or the JB leak.

      • Except it’s not on the same kernel. I can’t flash ICS roms on the leak, only JB roms (there are now two different kernel sections on droidrzr.)

      • the accidental push is definitely not on the ics kernel. You might want to do your research before you post something like that. Gatthew is right, you can’t reflash or go back to ics without some major overhauls with your kernel and system

  • Dylan Patel

    • Bionic

The Rock has come back to Chicago!

      • droidrazredge

If you smell what The Rock is cooking!

  • Capt. Crunch

Damn I’m already on the leaked version and idk if there is any way to try out the new one. Guess I’ll just have to wait for the fastboot files to come out and idk how long that will take.

    • NorCalGuy

I was thinking the same thing but what about all the people who just pulled the update via the ota while it was up for a few hours? Moto is going to have to figure out how to update those people too if the build versions do happen to be different.

      • guestus

When I signed up they had the accidential Christmas Eve version as one of the options of what software version my phone was on. They must be factoring that in.

      • michaelhacker

I had the OTA leaked update and when I filled out the survey for soak testing, the version number was one of the ones to select, so it seems they have accounted for that.

  • HuskerHog

Is anyone else having problems with supplying the HEX MEID number on the Motorola survey? They’re asking for a 15 digit number, but it is only 14 digits long,

    • bmchan

The 15th digit is one the back of the phone

  • HuskerHog

Is anyone else having problems with the HEX MEID number. The Motorola survey is asking for a 15 digit number, but the number is only 14 digits long.

    • Cass

yes, figured it out by going to settings > about phone > status > IMEI

    • bmchan

I had the same issue – go to the back of the phone to find the 15th digit.

You could also open up the microSD/SIM slot, it should be there with all 15 digits, even though typing *#06# only gives you 14.

  • Bionic

    Bionic won’t be far behind.

    • Justin Winker

I’m thinking early Q2 for the Bionic. It runs essentially the same software as the Razr, minus a few minor adjustments.

      • Bionic

No. Mid to late March last I heard

        • Justin Winker

I don’t know about that – Moto would have listed Q1 as the date if they planned it that early. In addition, I haven’t seen a JB leak for a Bionic yet – usually there are a few floating around at this point (if the date is mid- to late-March).

    • I’m reaaalllly hoping that too. Cuz then I won’t have to be on AOSP roms to have JB. I can just have Blur based roms. Woohoo!

  • HuskerHog

Is anyone else having a problem entering the HEX MEID number? The Motorola survey is asking for a 15 digit number, but the number is only 14 digits long.

    • Tyler James

@bbd2b3605d7387f807b619f188f677dc:disqus I had the same issue. Go to Settings > About Phone > Status and find the MEID Number there. Using the Dialer option does not show the last digit you need for some reason.

      • HuskerHog

        Thanks. That did it.

  • rda990

Wondering if this is the same JB some of us got back in December, or a newer version of that one that fixed some bugs?

    • Bionic

      It’s newer

      • Cassy

And official this time. Last time was one giant screw up.

      • fflan513

Do you think it’s ok to get this updated JB on top of the one received in DEC or is there a need to revert to ICS?

      • Hopefully they will surprise us with 4.2!!

        • Bionic

It’s not. There are certain people on certain websites who know what version it is and it’s not 4.2.

          • That sucks considering by the time Moto and Verizon roll this out Google I/O will probably be over and Key Lime Pie released…..

  • Tyler James

Finally! My only concern with updating to JB is the fact that I use FoxFi (Which is now PDANet+). I am bummed about that, but on the other hand JB is too nice to pass up.

    • Bionic

You can still use bluetooth I believe to make a hotspot with the foxfi app.

      • Tyler James

My thing is I use the Wi-Fi option on FoxFi to tie into my EyeFi card to send pictures to ShutterFly wirelessly. I won’t be able to do that via the bluetooth mode or USB mode.

        • Bionic

True. But I’m sure the team behind foxfi will try their best with jelly bean.

        • Have you tried rooting using Matt’s Utility? Its SUPER easy and almost IDIOT proof! Just root and do the WIFI hack thats on DroidRazrRoot (dot) com or alternatively use on of the hundreds of apps available on the Play Store.

  • drinksprite

man, they’re still gonna wait til the very last day or Q1

    • Mark Mann

the last day of q1 is still q1 is it not?

      • Stan

It’s up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare minimum or, well, like Brian, for example, has 37 pieces of flair on today. And a terrific smile.

  • So much for the confidentiality agreement. lol

  • hah, I just submitted a tip for this as I have recieved the e-mail with the survey monkey link in it.
