Android 4.2.1 Leaks for the Galaxy S3 – Lock Screen Widgets Actually Included

galaxy s3 update

The first TouchWiz version of Android 4.2 has leaked today over at SamMobile for the Galaxy S3, giving us a look at how Samsung plans to incorporate the new features that came in the newest version of Jelly Bean. At first glance, it’s most definitely still TouchWiz as you know, but Samsung did manage to sneak in all of the goodies you’ve come to know.

The first thing we noticed was lock screen widgets, which take on a similar UI to stock Android. A swipe from the right gets you directly into the camera – a swipe from the left gets you into the rest of your widgets.

In the notification area, we see the second page of toggles, though Samsung has skinned it and also added mode options than Google ever imagined when it created this page.

There are also supposed to be new voice controls for completing actions on your phone, Daydream, more actionable notifications, a better ripple effect, and more.

If you want to flash this, you have to have the international version of the Galaxy S3, model GT-I9300.

Please verizon don’t make us wait too long for 4.2.1 update for your gs3 owners

  • jzwerlz43

Will this update cause one to lose root access?

  • itsacardigan

everyone is complaining about how it looks….but it looks exactly like what you have now (pending your not running a custom rom). stop crying. but definitely have a good day.

  • dsass600

    Too dam ugly!

  • manny108

This looks terrible. I’m glad I’m rooted and on 4.2.2 on my S3.

  • No more Lockscreen-Shortcuts? 🙁

  • I’m having this since ages with the cyanogenmod 10.1. If i wait for an official release, i might end up with a different smartphone or dead.
Big thanks to the developers for the mod.

  • Thank you for posting this.. I can say we all have proper Mali graphics in aosp 4.2 because of the blobs pulled from this build 🙂

    • geocab

??? What do you mean by this? Does 4.2 improve the way the GPU performs?

      • SemahjLam

i think hes saying because of the official touchwiz 4.2 rom it gave them the proper drivers for the stock aosp 4.2 rom

  • l’m actually excited about this.

  • Obvious Sarcasm

Too late… Already on 4.2.2… Awesome job Verizon!

    • Tim242

Too later Verizon? Sarcasm or not, this is a leak for the international version. It is not even final. It will be many months before Verizon’s S III sees the 4.2 update.

    • Ma

What’s a good stable 4.2.2 ROM for Verizon SGS3? AOKP build 3 has a bunch of very turdy bugs that will most likely never be resolved.

      • manny108

Rootbox is a great stable Rom on Verizon S3. It is a mix of AOKP and Cyanogenmod 10.1

      • Obvious Sarcasm

PA 3 is pretty good and stable for me.

  • george harris

    Thank goodness for themers

    • Tim242

Definitely. I’m using Jelly Beans ROM on my Note II. Love having the TW features, but with AOSP theming!

  • Well atleast there is imprved notification toggles…

  • Hopefully they improve the messaging app…because it is horrendous on 4.1

    • DC_Guy

  • Yoderz

Everything I was reading was great until I read the “international version” part. Sigh.

  • tyguy829

Are you sure this isn’t touchwiz because this sure as hell still looks like gingerbread

  • The notification shade quick settings look horrendous.

    • Trueblue711

It’s a bit repetitive but I like it more than having to scroll left and right like you have to now.

    • bydavidrosen

please lord let that be optional. haha

      • BulletTooth_Tony

You gotta hit the button in the upper right to flip the panel over to see those… same icon as stock.

    • ceejw

Samsung’s blue and green color screen is really terrible.

      • kidtronic

It’s like they went out of their way to make it horrendous.

      • Ibrick

Right?! and people complain about Sense. TouchWiz is far worse IMO..

    • Jack Roberts

It Sure Does Yes Samsung May Have A Few Extra Toggles In The Quick Settings Screen But Google Still Wins Hands Down In Design At Least With Me

  • MichaelFranz

Would love that lock screen widget… I’ve come to love dash clock on my tablet and I think the gs3 lock screen is fully…. Yes fugly

  • alex

So lets see if this makes it to verizon galaxy s3 before the galaxy nexus

    • slider112

      It will 🙁

    • Richard Yarrell

      Galaxy S3 definitely first

  • galaxynex5656

Samscreen Wizitts? Just thinking of the Samsung Orb earlier 😛 Wouldn’t be surprised

  • Rigoberto

Verizon Wireless where is the Galaxy NEXUS??!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I am “doing it wrong” and I “bought the wrong phone”. Deal with it.

    • DroidzFX

We don’t have to you do.

    • Pedro

      Nexus 4

      And 4.2.2 weeks ago

    • manaox

I flashed Paranoid android 3 android version 4.2.2 to the Verizon Nexus and my S3 this week. Its what that unlocked bootloader is for. Get the nexus toolkit and a mini usb and flash over it, its better wasting time complaining about your carrier and half the fun of owning a nexus device!!!

    • KleenDroid

      No problem… Just install it.

4.2.1 has been out for months for the Gnex and 4.2.2 is now also available for the taking.

  • Rickerbilly

I can’t wait until BeansTown gets a hold of this!

  • JetBlue

Hope this means there will be a leak for the Note 2 soon

    • Kevin Olson

  • chris125

And looks exactly like gb because of touchwiz.

    • LegalAmerican

It doesn’t look anything like GB. And if Touchwiz sucked so bad, Samsung wouldn’t be dominating every other phone manufacturer on Android.

      • chris125

Because people don’t have a choice? Not like they can remove it. You can say the same about all the crappy skins. And I said gb touch wiz

      • They keep all the green from the old days, that’s why many people think is ugly: battery icon on notifications, quick settings etc. They really improve many things from stock like all the Note add-ons but the theme needs a new style. They should add a setting to change the theme color. It can be done with some hacks, but should be easily modifiable.

      • Ibrick

        No.. it still sucks

      • Danrarbc

No it really does look like it did on GB.

    • JMonkeYJ

i agree! i was very surprised when i first used the Note 2. it was like Samsung spent months of hard, diligent work reverting almost every aspect of Jelly Bean back to Gingerbread. i don’t get it!

  • Good job Samsung. You have taken something beautiful and made it ugly.
