Minor “Nearby” Update Rolling Out to Facebook App Later Today

The official Facebook for Android application is to receive a minor “Nearby” feature enhancement later today. With this tab, you can browse nearby points of interest, as if you were using Foursquare. You can check reviews, share places with friends, and also see if any of your friends have already been there.

According to FB, the update should go live sometime later today in Google Play as well as for iOS devices.

Still enjoying the recent native update? I think it’s great.

  • I really hope they expand that section into a mini news feed for nearby posts. Makes the “friends” function of FB more handy. {{-_-}}

it is a laggy stuttering piece of crap on my Nexus 4. Content may load faster but they desperately need to sort out the scrolling smoothness. Look at G+ or Google currents to see that this can be done correctly.

  • Cowboydroid

I installed it last week…seemed like it was actually usable.

Until I tried to open it a second time. Then it just hung up…froze. I immediately uninstalled it and will not re-install it. Web-version only, for when I actually need it.

  • LionStone

Oh? A ‘Nearby’ button like G+, hmm 🙂

  • Facebook 2.0 sucks on my Razr Maxx… Terribly slow load times. Just rebooted, turned on Wifi, loaded droid life, then loaded Facebook on Chrome: 4.5sec. Facebook.2.0: 40 seconds some pictures did not load.

    • rggarrison

It’s awful on my Razr Maxx as well. It force closes on me about 70% of the time now. For me, it’s not any better than it was before.

      • Mine does not force close… What other apps could compromise Razr/Facebook.

    • After putting up with the garbage FB app since late 2009, I can say that I finally have a working version. Pics load up instantly for me, which is a HUGE deal. With the old version pics would never load.

      • JMonkeYJ

i still have the pic loading issues even with the new version 🙁 when they do load, it’s super quick and nice, but it seems to have the same issue where a good 25% of the time it just spins and never gets any data

      • WAldenIV

How does the new version of the app compare to the mobile site? I stopped using the app months ago. I have been happier with the website, although it doesn’t get 100% of notifications.

    • Ok. Facebook is running really well on Razr Maxx after today’s update.

  • Eric

Love the Iphone pic! Funny how this site is slowly trying to change its direction. Just make the annoucemnt guys. If you wanna do more than just android to make a extra buck or two say it already.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

SAY IT! . . . JUST SAY IT!

  • cooksta32676

That phone in the picture looks pretty tight….what is it?

    • MicroNix

You see a phone? Huh, all I see is a rotten piece of fruit in the picture.

      • DroidDoesnt_2

Hahaha!!! How hilarious is this? A fandroid site announces an update to Facebook and they show it, not on a Nexus 4, not on a GS3, but on an iPhone???? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Even fandroid sites know the real thing from the pretenders!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

    • it looks like the iphone 1 because nothing has changed

      • Thomas

Exactly. But the iSheep will buy it anyway. BTW, is this the line for apps ?

  • bqluong

I tried using Lucky Patcher to deny GPS permissions and the Facebook app crashes. Am I missing something?

  • rodney11ride

    Still a resource sucking machine

    • LionStone

Which is why I uninstalled it off my phone… my phones have never been happier 🙂

Foursquare rules because you can earn free drinks at bars and tokens at ChuckEcheese 🙂 I used it in Vegas and had a field day.

    • Silver Veloz

Don’t know if I’ll use this in Facebook or not. I used Foursquare also as there are some benefits. Recently in Palm Springs I got 20% off the bill at a restaurant because I was “mayor”. And 10% at the yogurt place for each check in.

    • Used it in Vegas as well. It was pretty awesome. One of the days ended up being social media day and they were giving out tons of stuff for a check in.

      • michael arazan

You guys went to Vegas, and then went to the chuck e cheese there? Have you seen Vegas, or a Vegas commercial?

  • WalkerNA

The new app is worlds more reliable for me. The old app used to time out on me ~70% of the time. I have had zero issues loading the news feed since the native app launched.

  • Greyhame

There is already a “Nearby” notifications check box in the app. I’ve got this and Messenger Location settings both OFF, yet my GPS continues to start up whenever I open the app. No, I don’t want FB to know where I am.

    • Booyah

Exactly. Now my battery drains even faster because every time I open the app it tries to locate. Switching back to the browser until they provide a way to turn this off.

      • Tyler

If I remember correctly there is an app that grants permission for apps to use gps. It requires root if I remember correctly. Maybe someone knows what I’m talking about. Might be worth looking into.

  • The new app is pretty fast, though the interface is still terrible and the animations are still jittery.

  • Paul

I love it as well. My only issue so far is with the “sort” feature. I know that if I click the “gear” I can sort it by either ‘most recent’ or ‘top stories’, but every time I select ‘most recent’ it forces me back to ‘top stories’. Any tricks around that or is this just a minor bug?

    • Greyhame

No tricks that I know.. that’s the default and it’s frustrating as hell.

  • Rob Miller

To be honest the new native app blows. Takes forever to load new posts. I was happier with the last version. Fail.

    • r0lct

What phone you using? It runs great for me but my wife’s DInc2 it runs like crap. Wondering if it is tied to Sense or phone age.

      • Rob Miller

I have a G-Nex. I even deleted the app and re-installed and still having the same issue. On a side note: To whoever gave me a down vote, Thanks! I love how I get that for voicing my opinion.

        • r0lct

I had it running on my GNex right before I got rid of it and it seemed to run fine. So I guess I’m no help.

          • Rob Miller

Yea Not sure what it is. It doesn’t matter if I’m on wifi or 3G/4G just really slow to load. Oh well. Thanks anyway!

        • Droidzilla

I downvoted you for complaining about being downvoted.

      • HTC Rezound w/ Sense and it’s perfect for me. Best version of this app that I’ve ever used.
