Flashback Friday: OG DROID Available From Daily Steals for $70

Not a bad way to kick off a Friday. The original “OG” Motorola DROID can be picked up today from Daily Steals in brand new packaging for $69.99. Seriously, the listing says that it is “new” and not refurbished. That means you have less than 13 hours to buy one, so that you can frame it and put it on display for the world to see. After all, this is the device that put Android on the map in a major way. With an epic marketing campaign and top-of-the-line specs for its time, there is no other device in the history of this operating system that has made such an impact.

Cheers Robert!

My OG rocks Liquid ICS and thanks to Groove IP I can still use it to make and receive WiFi phone calls on my Google Voice number even though Verizon deactivated it when I got my GNex. I own three replacement batteries so the OG is always available as a reliable standby phone. Its earned a permanent place in my tech arsenal and still comes in handy once in a while.

  • Dannyboy

I raised hell with VZW to give Mr a brand new OG Droid Days before Droid X came out. They finally gave in and overnighted me one in the box. Then I bought the Droid X for full retail. Needless to say I will be holding that little piece of nostalgia for all time.

  • Tom

There are things on my OG that I wish my Thunderbolt had!

  • Tom

My Original Droid is my alarm clock. It’s waken me up every morning! Still going strong!

  • world.wide.wes

My droid is a 16 GB WiFi ,media server for my nexus 7! Muhahaha

  • Michael Lewis

I still use my OG droid on occasion but I do wish that Verizon would allow you to run two phones on one line without cost. If I had a GSM phone then I could just move the SIM to the other phone but nope. It’s verizon :/

  • Buckoman

Time to buy a bunch of them in bulk and sell them on ebay for $200 off contract.

  • ryanallaire

    Shouldn’t it be free??..

  • Sp4rxx

I actually bought a glass display case for mine with a light that shines down on it. The stand is your standard plastic display stand but I put red silk underneath it …. i should post a pic somewhere 😛

    • David Fairweather

My OG still makes and receives WiFi phone calls thanks to Groove IP.

  • oemunlocked

What happened to Custom ROM Friday???

  • Ryan

If they updated the hardware I’d order it right now !!

  • I bought a used one off eBay a few months ago for $31.00

  • gr8515

    best phone ever!!!

  • I’ve still got my OG Droid’s. Using them as PMPs now. lol

  • You actually used Flashback Friday. LOL. Did I just force you into a new trend.

  • My OD was retired along time ago, it’s now taking a trip to Asia, and I hope you’ll find happiness out there…

  • Guest

It’s funny, the screen is still bigger than the iPhone’s.

  • JeffDenver

It did have some great specs, but they were not all top of the line. 256 Megs of Ram was teeny-tiny, even back then. It did have an awesome display though. And was very easy to overclock.

  • prince jackson

Still rocking the OG droid two years later. Why? Quality radios, original ‘retina’, stock android, solid battery. Fits in the pocket. Show me a phone that has ALL that today.

    • JeffDenver

Yeah, that display kicked ass. IPS and Higher resolution than anything else until the iPhone4 came out. It had a 265ppi…that is about the same as the “new” iPad. Oh…and it could do 24-bit color on the desktop (but only with GB or above).

    • Might just be me, but I feel like the radios are better in my GNex. Only complaint I ever had about the OG Droid was the memory space, I ran out of room for apps much too quickly.

    • Sp4rxx

      Your radios do 4G????

  • cheezer88

  • Bionic_Pags

Hey Kellex, Why is this “Not a way to kick off a Friday”? I think it’s a great way… nothing wrong with taking the time to remember where you came from! If i had spare cash, i would pick one of these up, but i’ll just hold on to the one i retired – wear, tear and all.

    • shecalledmejay

I think he meant “No other way to kick of a Friday”

      • Bionic_Pags

Yeah, that makes more sense – auto correct probably got in the way… not trying to be one of those grammar correcting a-holes – just took it for what it was 🙂

    • Meant not a “bad” way. /me slaps myself.

  • poeddroiduser

I just retired my OG last week for a GNex. Love the GNex but the screen is not the same as the OG! RIP….

  • Pfigurella

Mine is an mp3 player and Pandora streamer. Still browse with it every now and then.

  • MikeSaver

My first smartphone ever! And oh how I grew to hate it as its software became horribly outdated and it couldn’t even open the android market.

Now its in a drawer somewhere.

    • JeffDenver

Outdated…LOL! Mine is running an ICS ROM right now. And works great.

      • MikeSaver

why? Hope you’re having fun without a processor.

        • JeffDenver

As a backup phone. As a clock-radio. Thats why.
Processor is fine. Watch and learn – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idm0q9zoNEE

ICS is not that processor intensive. It’s main weak spot is RAM, not CPU.

    • Droidzilla

      You are a horrible person.

  • This Droid was hardworking and served me well.

  • zepfloyd

I just bought one since it’s new. And now I have no idea why, haha.

  • Raven

I replaced my old OG Droid with a Droid 2 which I still use and love even though it is getting rather slow by today’s standards, but I still love the form factor I would not want anything bigger. I decided to fire up the old Droid a while ago and seeing that a lot of apps were way out of date I began updating them.

Unfortunately, something went horribly wrong and it seems that every app (300 or so) that had been using apps2sd suddenly got lost. I could probably painstakingly repair them, but not really worth it at this point. So, it is probably time to try a fresh ROM. I would like to revive it as an alarm clock and media player. Does anyone know what the best thing going for the OG Droid is these days? Project Elite, Cyanogen, something else?

    • jpfrasier

Probably Project Elite or MIUI if you want something way different than stock.

  • schoat333

If it wasn’t for the Gnex, I would actually miss my OG. The Gnex is everything the OG was and more tho.

  • fauxshizzl

Still got my OG. I should frame and shadow box it.

  • dukenilnil

Still have mine purchased on launch (after talking the Verizon rep into a sweet deal because she thought I actually might go to AT&T for the Iphone! Ha!). Took 3 swims, incalculable falls, has a completely busted/spiderwebbed screen, and is wonky to charge, but….when I put a working battery in it, the thing fires up and still can provide hours of fun, music, camera, etc.

  • ddevito

    I’ll never forget my first…..Droid :p

  • storm35x

Lol just ordered this for my trophy shelf

  • Mine is my daily wifi/bluetooth mp3 player!

  • Murphy

    Still have mine. Droooooiiid!

  • I’d rather frame my old OG to show the world real build quality.

    • I have mine sitting in the dock for it on my dresser.

      • 4n1m4L

I’m working on using mine to control the air conditioners in my house.

      • montymc1

Tjhrulz , Same here. It wakes me up every day. Gentle Alarm is a great app.

        • michael arazan

use my og D1 as a music player and alarm clock still, louder than my gnex with less static, and still play games on it because some games don’t have save functions on them so I can pause and come back to it later w/o the worry of a text or call resetting the game..

  • That was my first smartphone. Oh the memories 🙂

  • picaso86

This phone made me fell in love with Android! 🙂

    • Billyt

Remember when Verizon did Android right?

      • InvaderDJ

It’s sad to see how far they’ve fallen since then. The DROID was the promise of a new era, but Verizon being a U.S. carrier (and one of the worst of them when it comes to openness) quickly went back to its old ways. If they could get away with it now I wouldn’t be surprised if they introduced a phone where Bluetooth was locked down and the only way to get content on the phone was through their services.

  • Andrew Merewitz

Bought that phone on release day, wow..what that phone did for Android/smartphones in general will never be outdone.

  • Kevin Simpson

It’s obviously underpowered compared to what’s available now, but I still use mine to play music. It’s been through a lot but it’s still plugging along!

  • rodney11ride

mine is in the windshield mount in my yamaha rhino sxs loaded with Bugless Beast and Backcountry Navigator GPS app. it tracks every where i ride, geo picture taking, wifi connected to my Gnex.. it will live on forever! And if something *knock on wood, were to happen to gnex while out and about it will be activated and serve me well (unitl gnex gets fixed)

    • how do you keep it connected to your Gnex? my og won’t connect to my wifi hotspot on my Gnex?

  • Matt Gondek

What’s the JB ROM status on the OG?

    • sc0rch3d

my D2 barely can chug along with ICS…i would say the chances for the OG are pretty remote 🙂

    • John

nonexistent. it runs like shi t on that old ass phone. just let it go man…let it go!

      • Matt Gondek

I can’t. It stole my android virginity!

      • Droidzilla

The OG Droid should pimp slap you for uttering such blasphemy.

        • John

Maybe but it’s like the select bunch still trying to hold onto Win XP & just won’t let it go. It’s time to move on sometimes. 😉

          • Droidzilla

The difference is, Windows was already big when XP came out and XP kind of sucked. The OG Droid is what kicked off Android in the US, and it’s still a model for the philosophy all Android OEMs (especially its maker, Motorola) should follow.

    • JeffDenver

I don’t know, but I have ICS on it now, and with Launcher Pro it seems to work very well.

      • millidooms

Which ICS Rom are you using?

    • Kyle Chen

      kfazz is working on it.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    DROID! . . . . . . *Goes back to Gnex*

  • Greg Morgan

That’s funny, just yesterday I pulled my OG out. I thought “how did I use this phone with such a small screen!” lol but it’s still a very good phone.

    • I have my OG in a dock as my alarm clock, and every morning I get the same feeling. And when I bought it on day one, I remember thinking “WOW! 3.7 inch screen!!!”

      • dawn m. armfield

I have mine as my clock, too. It always amazes me at how small it is — but how much joy I got out of it.

        • JoshGroff

          Intentional double entendre?

          • Droidzilla

That was the classiest twss I’ve ever seen.

      • Just remember, that screen is still to this day bigger than Apple’s 3.5″ screen! I use mine as a clock radio now and I still love it!

    • My OG is at the bottom of a canal off the side of the road. My car is also there. I’ll get them back someday.

      • duke69111

Nice! Let us know how that turns out.

      • thedonxr

What did the text say? 😛

  • Marty jones

    .. Our hero

  • Andrew

  • I still have this, but I don’t know what to do with it other than a fancy paper weight

    • EricRees

Mine is enjoying its retirement and doing a great job as my alarm clock. It can play music too.

    • Alden Manipula

I use mine as a dashcam with Daily Roads.
