Massive Amount of Jelly Bean ROMs Hitting the Web for Galaxy Nexus, Here are Some Good Choices

With Jelly Bean source hitting AOSP yesterday, we knew every Android ROM developer would be hard at work to bring the newest and greatest ROM to Galaxy Nexus owners. Whether you are looking for a pure Google Experience ROM built straight from source or want some tweaks and hacks in there as well, we have a very nice list here to get you started.

Some of these are built right from AOSP and others are works off of the GSM nandroid build that leaked two weeks ago. Either way you slice it, it’s Jelly Bean goodness.

Each ROM has its own set of characteristics, so be sure to check feature lists and changelogs to make sure you get exactly what you want. Each of these are flashable through ClockworkMod Recovery, and yes, you must be rooted to attempt this. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to let us know down below and we will do our best to field them. If you want our opinion as to which one to try first, we hear Jelly Belly is quite delectable.

Major cheers to Brian!

Thanks very much for the list……..Ive been using Razors version for a few weeks without any problems at all.

  • 3M4NU31

I’ll wait for Bugless Beast to get Jellybean! Pete has THE smoothest ROMs out there!

    • SeanBello

his page hasn’t been updated in months though. I hope he hasn’t stopped

      • 3M4NU31

If you follow him on twitter, you’ll see he’s already gotten started!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=674902817 Zach Davis

sweeeet, I’ve got some new stuff to try now lol. And I just went from VanirBean to AOKP M6 lol

  • EC8CH

    I second the Jelly Belly

    • JustTrollin69

How is Jelly Belly? Also, how is the battery life? I’ve been on viscous since day 1 with awesome battery life.

      • SeanBello

me too, still on v1 because I don’t wanna risk some of the issues ppl are having switching builds

        • tehserver

I just flashed v5 today from v3 and haven’t had any issues so far.

          • SeanBello

is there a big difference? I haven’t really had any issues.

          • tehserver

The 4 way power control is the biggest thing that I’ve seen. If that’s not a big deal for you and you haven’t had any issues, I would wait for something major.

          • Chip

what exactly is 4 way power control? I’m on v3 and was wondering if I should go up to v4 (which seems more trusted) or v5.

  • duke69111

Can any of the AOSP roms be flashed through boot manager. No of the leaked nandroid built roms have to this point.

  • http://profiles.google.com/xj333t Joel McCauley

I just find it hard to believe that Motorola and Verizon have not:

1.) unlocked the bootloader of my Droid X.

2.) sent out an OTA to update my Droid X to Jelly Bean.

3.) sent me a $250 prepaid gift card so I can purchase the N7 16gb.

the lack of empathy and concern for their customers is so out of character…

at least my new locked bootloader is scheduled to arrive tomorrow… it is blue and has 32gb of internal storage…

    • http://twitter.com/thehammerofthor Jeff Helget

The bitterness, I can taste it…

    • PC_Tool

My wife’s white locked bootloader arrived yesterday. It is *very* nice. Our last Touchwiz device was a Fascinate…you can imagine the leaps and bounds over that this thing was. ;-)

I’m sitting here with my Nexus running JB…and I’m jealous.

      • Jwhap

Funny, my wife got the white T-Mobile unlocked version. Though I like her phone, I am not the least bit jealous! I love my gnex!

    • ostensibly

first thing I did when my wife’s came was install Nova and some less… naturific alert files.

  • br_hermon

Here’s some question maybe some of the readers or DL could answer. Which of the JB ROMs is customized / tweaked? Which is closest to the stock experience? Are some of these well known Devs? or are they just Avg Joe who threw together an AOSP Rom? With all this said, we haven’t touched on Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Bugless Beast, Liquidsmooth (although that’s related to the VIcious ROM, yes?) Have any of these Devs given any comment? (Yes, CMod and AOKP already have)

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Razor’s Jelly is 100% stock and works flawlessly. I insist on pure stock ROMs, and that is the one I use and LOVE. It will get stuck on the Google boot logo every once in the while (just wait, it will boot eventually), but many of them do that. That will go away once it’s moved to an AOSP ROM.

      • br_hermon

Is the Dev working on converting it to AOSP?

        • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Don’t know. I think he’s considering it. I’ve talked to him in a PM and he says if no one else will, he may. Many people are asking in the thread that he do it as well.

      • al

        Try redemption ROM.

    • http://www.AndroidAllies.com/ Max M.

I would say the majority are “average Joes.” The ones who get their builds out right after source drops are usually just guys who wanna try a ROM and get it while the going is good (curious that a bunch of them have the same problems).

Most are pretty close to stock at this point. You have a few throwing stupid mods in there or different kernels, but nothing as drastic as AOKP or CM with ICS.

Bugless Beast should be coming out with something soon. That is a great ROM known for it’s smoothness, so it will need work. CM and AOKP have started. You will probably see early builds soon from both but they won’t have many features.

  • daryle barden jr

I really need to root and download a custom rom. I’m missing out!

    • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

Yeah, you really do…and you really are. Get on that! Do you have a GNex?

      • daryle barden jr

Yeah I have the Gnex and I’m rooted running the Bugless Beast. Tbh I’m not too happy with it. I can see the increase in speed along with other things but it does act funky sometimes. Plus the MeetMe doesn’t work haha.

  • http://profiles.google.com/nicholas.foote Nicholas Foote

While I appreciate all the hard work the devs are putting in, all of the Roms boast about being “as close to stock as possible” but I would kill for a built in notification power control widget, I can’t find a third party app that works as well as AOKP’s did. Things like toggling 4G, mobile data, and GPS without it just being a shortcut to the settings where I turn it off there…

Anyone been using a good one that does that? I’ve tried Power Controls, Widgetsoid, and Extended Controls.

    • Ken Bosse

      have you tried this?
      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.eclairwidgets
not sure if you are referring to the same app with “power controls”

    • NYAvsFan

I have switchpro but it isn’t nearly as good. I keep pulling down the drop down for the AOKP controls only to realize they aren’t there.

      • Salam Zebian

I totally hear you, I’m coming from Gnex and really miss my quick controls. I can live without everything else

    • Tsabhira

I don’t know if it will do what you want, but I still use Quicker.

    • trevor

you can turn 4g off with notifcation toggle or under the more setting under wireless & networks in settings then mobile networks. choose cdma instead of LTE

  • br_hermon

Here’s one more that I found in case anyone’s interested. I haven’t tried it yet. I’m holding tight until one AOSP ROM rises above the rest, working out bugs n stuff.
    http://rootzwiki.com/topic/29494-toro-rom-jb-the-return-of-rootzboat/

Also, I was really hoping to get some comparisons and feedback directly from DL to steer new Jelly Bean adopters in the right direction, but I guess this is a start. Everyone’s comments here are what might really show us what ROMs best to try out.

  • Bryan Sparks

Should I go vanilla or AOKP for Jelly Bean?

  • John Burke

Any news on when yakju GNexes will be getting the OTA to 4.1?

  • AndrewScottRox

I’m on Vicious Toro v5 and haven’t had any problems.

  • http://twitter.com/chrisleighton3 Chris Leighton

I’m running Jelly Belly until Peter Alfonso gets a Bugless Beast build out. Then I’m switching to CM10 once it goes release candidate.

  • antintyty

there seems to be the same errors in the aosp built ones, camera and google now act up…

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

I’ve been on Vicious V3 for a week now and its really good. Just be aware that on any JB rom you’ll likely need the GPS fix in XDA. I’m sticking with V3 until a full source version is out as all of these are at best hybrids right now.

  • otter34

Do any of them have pull down toggles or long press volume to skip music and does maps show the correct location?

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

Don’t know about the first two, but with any of them you can flash the GPS fix in XDA and it works perfectly.

  • red014

I know it probably won’t happen, but I’m going to wait until this weekend to see if the CM10 nightlies or AOKP or even Pete’s BB builds are live before I try one of these jobbies.

  • CARPDM

I have a noob question. I just want to load/try vanilla JB before going to a custom JB Rom, (currently on AOKP M-5). Is that available now to load? or does AOSP have to go thru some VZW stuff before?

    • SeanBello

even with the news broke last night that the GNex is back to “officially” being supported by AOSP, the issue is the VZW stuff I believe, but devs are taking care of that end. ps: M6 just came out…should be unreal.

      • CARPDM

yeah I was going to update to M6, but waiting to see if M7(JB) comes out in a few days/weeks, or going to try some other JB rom. I want Google Now NOW

  • brkshr

Half of those ROMs listed are a port of the GSM developer release from a couple weeks ago. Not AOSP roms from the source released yesterday.

Edit: AOSP would be 4.1.1 ROMs, not 4.1 ROMs from the dev release

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      Not misleading at all.

“Some of these are built right from AOSP and others are works off of the GSM nandroid build that leaked two weeks ago. Either way you slice it, it’s Jelly Bean goodness.”

      • brkshr

You’re right, I must have misread/overstepped that part.

  • http://www.facebook.com/travis.faulkner Travis Faulkner

Im running Vanirbean v.8.0.1 and its great, no love here but Im enjoying it. Id love to run just a stock version but I’ve gotten spoiled by Liquid’s stuff. I gotta have the customization!
    http://rootzwiki.com/topic/28473-rom-vanirbean-v801-read-the-opinsert-witty-tagline-here/

    • Larizard

im on VanirBean v5. I heard v9 as supposed to drop yesterday, but the dev moved on to Liquid. :(( I’m new to all this, so I’m scared of trying any more non AOSP ROMs.. I’ll stick with v5 until then..

      • Prime7

I’m on v7, dirty flashed from v5 (dirty flashed from v3). It’s a nice upgrade from v5 if you can get ahold of the ROM.

Is it worth it to upgrade to v8.01?

        • T_Dizzle

Yes. I’ve been using them all since V1 and V8 is the first good GPS lock I’ve gotten on my Galaxy Nexus. I’m loving the butter speed of jelly bean.

          • Jwhap

I have been running v8 as well. There is nothing wrong, though it seems wifi still seems a little weaker than on ics. I have had great luck with this rom!

          • T_Dizzle

I’ve heard a couple people complain about V7 and I had WiFi issues myself but V8 cleared those right up.

          • dk81

I’ve had the opposite happen, v8 seems better than my old GummyNex ICS rom, netflix runs better for me now.

      • dk81

I was just going to say the same thing. Tried Vicious and it was just buggy, then went to VanirBean v5 and everything was good but gps, upgraded to v8, and everything is smoother than ever, really happy with it. Pretty disappointed DL didn’t even mention it as it’s probably the smoothest jelly bean rom available.

  • Tony Dicken

    ROOTZ BOAT FTW

  • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

I would remove the hacked roms and only include true 4.1.1 roms also you forgot rootzboat.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

It’s not about forgetting, it’s about it being submitted and or known about at the time of posting. Don’t be afraid to link to any ROMs you enjoy and think others could benefit from.

    • grand0

ps most of the hacked mods work perfect for people knowing what they are doing. especially jelly belly.

  • WormDoes

have all these been updated to source? I know all of them were built off of bisix’s nandroid.

RootzBoat, which isn’t listed is running great and is actually built from source

  • mjmedstarved

    Jelly Belly/Trinity Kernel/ all mods .zip… PERFECT

    • Wes Sandler

      2nd

  • quiklives

I am probably just going to wait for AOKP, honestly.

    • mjmedstarved

I wason AOKP and am not addicted to Jelly Belly… updates out the yin-yang!!!

  • http://twitter.com/maciekbaron Maciej Baron

    *Massive number of [/grammar police]

    Thanks for the list!

  • fvqu

I’m currently running Vicious Toro v5, very happy with it so far.

  • jjrudey

Jelly Belly is my choice for now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rodger.ahearn Rodger Ahearn

    Vicious JB V5 FTW!!

    • http://twitter.com/fritzo2162 DougZ

That’s what I’m using. It’s the most trouble-free of the bunch. Great wifi/4G/battery too, and very stable.

  • grand0

on jelly belly 2.6 with francos r217 nighty jb kernel. have also used tirinity alpha28. so buttery smooth. everything works including google now, gps, wifi 3g/4g. the developer jakeday is on point and is always around to help anyone out. he also posted a flashable version of the JB bootloader. Highly recommended. done with ICS for good

  • coolsilver

I’d be happy if I can get a damned leak for the thunderbolt.

  • Clint O

Jelly Belly ran the best for me..But running a diff density the market wont update apps unless i edit the buildpro and reboot, but thats a pain. Gonna wait till LCD Density Modder Pro updates then try JellyBelly again…AOKP Milestone 6 till then

  • http://www.facebook.com/dmolina66 David Molina

I am waiting for the official OTA release since I only run stock on my GNex. You would think that Google would push out the OTA update the same day they release it on the AOSP, since they did promise that their Nexus devices would be the 1st to receive the latest update. :(

    • http://www.facebook.com/coreyvallejo Corey Vallejo

That’s not how ROM development works.

  • moelsen8

    still waiting for gummy..

  • http://twitter.com/cheese cheese

You shouldn’t be linking to half-baked ROMs, you’re only going to get a lot of complaints from users who think these are polished ROMs…

    • http://twitter.com/cheese cheese

lol I’m being thumbed down because I’m warning people that some of these ROMs are not feature complete? Not all ROMs are polished… fyi.

      • http://www.facebook.com/joshua.porrata Joshua Porrata

As of build 5 I have not had any issues, before that my problems were minor.

    • http://twitter.com/Bhockey77 Court

I’d imagine people who are flashing roms should know what to expect with these releases.

      • http://www.AndroidAllies.com/ Max M.

        Lol. I wish.

  • cgalyon

I’ve been using VanirBean since the first GSM leak. It’s been very reliable for me and I think they’re up to version 8.01 now (I’m still on v7 myself).

    • Southrncomfortjm

V8 is good, just be sure to get the Faster GPS app from the Playstore to fix the GPS issue that prevents Deep Sleep. I flashed V8 and realized my battery was draining much more overnight and found that to be my problem. Your results may vary!

      • http://twitter.com/KevinOgilvie2 Kevin Ogilvie

Agree 100%, once you fix the deep sleep, the battery life on 8.0.1 is amazing, at least 2x better than ICS. Only problem with Vanirbean is the boot animation, horrible!

        • Southrncomfortjm

I hated it too, luckily it’s easy to flash another one. If you look at the OP for VanirBean, the second post has suggested mods and one of them is the Nexus 7 boot animation which is pretty nice. Just save the file to your SD card, boot to CWM and flash it. Worked fine for me. Tons of other boot animations out there.

      • Bsody

Do you happen to use Swiftkey? If so, are the predictions working?

        • Southrncomfortjm

Nope, sorry. Stock keyboard for me.

      • Kodros

I’m pretty sure the “Faster GPS” app is a scam app since all of the developers other apps are also scams. Plus, the reviewers are saying that the latest version is pushing notification ads.

        • Southrncomfortjm

I haven’t seen any push notifications ads, but I have been seeing my GPS satelites go from 0/2 or 0/4 to 8/8. I’ve also seen my battery go from draining about 1% per hour (3800 mAH battery) overnight to only draining about 2% over that same period adter the fix.

  • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

“…we hear Jelly Bean is quite delectable.” ??? What? Aren’t they all JB?

    • JustTrollin69

uhh, Jelly Belly.. read it again.

      • CIFchamp24

To be fair, I did the same thing the first read through

        • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

Oh, sorry about that and thanx for the clarification. Sometimes I get so excited over posts, like this one, that I inevitably read it so fast that I miss some of it, and do that 3 or 4 times, until I can finally calm down and see what it actually says. That’s just the life of an Android addict :)

          • JustTrollin69

lol no worries brotha, just some friendly trollin. As a side note, have you tried Jelly Belly yet?

        • JustTrollin69

Lol yea same here, just trollin.

    • CIFchamp24

      Read it carefully….

  • CIFchamp24

A full functioning google now is pretty much what has my interest. Someone let me know when that comes up.

    • http://twitter.com/_GotHeeem ⚾Eric Witts⚾

Jelly Belly has been fully functional with their Google Now

      • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.yager Joseph A. Yager

Agreed – I’m waiting for a while before going to a full-source ROM as Jelly Belly has been amazing

      • CIFchamp24

Awesome! Voice and everything is running?

        • http://twitter.com/_GotHeeem ⚾Eric Witts⚾

Yes everything is 100 percent functional. Google Now, SMS, MMS, GPS, WiFi, 3G, 4G, Camera, Video, EVERYTHING.. and Project Butter runs amazing… very fast.

    • http://twitter.com/savagejeep SavageJeep

      Say what?!

      • CIFchamp24

        Did I miss something?

        • John

          yes.

        • http://twitter.com/savagejeep SavageJeep

Not sure about V5, but running Vicious JB V3 and it’s been 100% working in all version prior.

          • philstx

Works for me fine on V5, too.

          • CIFchamp24

            @savagejeep:disqus @philstx:disqus I’ll give it a shot. Thanks guys!

  • Addison Beckham

I’ve been running Vicious Jelly Bean V4 and I absolutely love it, but I can’t wait for some Jelly Bean AOKP!

    • mjv5117

agreed, im currently running jelly belly v2.5 with the trinity kernel but i was running vicious for awhile, stoked for aokp to release their rom though!

      • JustTrollin69

How would you compare Jelly Belly with Viscious? I am curious to see if I should make the switch.

        • SD_Scott

I find Jelly Belly to be a much better rom… Had serious GPS issues with Vicious.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      Mmmmm, same here!

    • r0lct

I’m still on V1 with the WiFi patch. Not going to bother with newer versions and just wait for AOKP.

      • Zach Grabill

I was, too. Flashed V5 and it’s a world better. Really a lot faster and more stable.

        • http://twitter.com/savagejeep SavageJeep

          How is GPS?

          • philstx

It’s been locking noticeably faster than v2 for me. Definitely faster than the lock with ICS AOKP

          • Paul

I am on V5 and haven’t been able to get GPS to lock on any version. Should I wipe and start over?

Also, what kernal are you running?

          • philstx

I actually switched from the Franco nightly to try the kernel that came with V5, leanKernel 4.0.0. I’m going to let it run with leanKernel for a few days to see how it goes. So far so good. GPS lock is still good.

            Good luck

    • philstx

I’m with the others who are anticipating an AOKP release. But while I am impatiently waiting for it, the Vicious ROM with Franco’s nightly has been a solid, stock-y ROM for me since v2.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

      Damn… I’m still on V2… haven’t had time! . . .i’ll do it later today

    • http://www.AndroidAllies.com/ Max M.

I had to get off Vicious because the builds are not good. He doesn’t have his own VZW Nexus. With mine, I literally couldn’t charge my phone unless it was off. It also had random reboots and it was overall just horribly built.

      • David Geiger

I have had that same charging issue with V3 and V4. In fact the reason I went to V4 was because my screen wouldn’t turn back on (after a week of running the rom with no issues.) so I did a battery pull and got a boot loop. Then on top of that it stopped charging so I couldn’t even add a new rom at first. I had to go explain to my sister in law why I had to borrow the battery from her Nexus for 30 minutes.

    • Frank Urbanski

I am on v4 myself and have 0 issues. I was going to go to v5 but I think I am just going to wait for some AOKP yumminess.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mrshelby Matt S

The official is by far the best one IMO. First time in years I have been stock and unrooted but this is so buttery smooth there is no reason for me to go custom.

    • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

      edit: wrong comment. derp

    • Greyhame

Stock, official 4.1.1? Ahh, that hasn’t been OTA’d to any phone.

It sounds like you’re running the hacked version from the nandroid of an IO GNex. But sure is smooth, eh? Wait til devs really get their heads wrapped around this!

    • br_hermon

“official” So I take it you mean the GSM version at I/O?

  • Napoleon

So, “here is the list, go do your homework”. I’d rather you tell me what the differences are, because to be honest, until today I didnt’ see any difference between the few other than stability. Vicious now has the 4 buttons power option but that’s pretty much it, AFAIK.

  • Steven Roy

Jelly Belly, Vicious, Razor, You Jelly, Official Developer Preview, and AXI0M
Are hacked up developer preview versions, and should probably be skipped over for the real 4.1.1 AOSP builds.

    • http://profiles.google.com/jtsurf18 Jason Downing

Engage is being switched over to Lucid today and will be 4.1.1 ASOP

    • jjrudey

Jelly Belly is also in the process of switching over.

  • will bartlett

i have yet to find a rom that my google maps shows my position correctly

    • SD_Scott

      Jelly Belly

im on it. it still rarely finds my location in maps

        • SD_Scott

Interesting… I use the GPS all the time for cycling routes and have had no problems. One of the main reasons I switched from Vicious…

        • Jwhap

Will did you try vanirbean?…. no GPS issues at all!

          • will bartlett

            An early build

  • http://profiles.google.com/jtsurf18 Jason Downing

Engage is becoming Lucid sometime today… released with AOSP Source. Will have more goodies baked in!!

I love Chris’ writing style! But DL is still by far my favorite

some of the pure AOSP attempts are not final. In some cases, Google Now is not functioning, or the camera app is bugged. Better to wait it out a little bit more until a more final AOSP compile is done by trusted ROM devs.
