Apex Launcher Beta Released, Widgets in Dock and Two Finger Gestures Added

Last week, a new beta version of Apex launcher was posted on the XDA forums that shows off what features we have to look forward to in the pro version of the launcher. The beta will expire on April 20, so try and get some good use in before time runs out. Inside the new beta is a gang of new features. In fact, there are so many features, we’re going to copy and paste the changelog right here:

Note: You may request a free evaluation license from the settings.

  • Added pinch in gesture option
  • Added launch shortcut option for gestures
  • Added vertical dock margin option
  • Multiple configurable drawer tabs (pro)
  • Unread count notifications (pro)
  • Dock swipe gestures (pro)
  • Two finger gestures (pro)
  • More transition effects for homescreen and drawer (pro)
  • Batch add option for folders (pro)
  • Option to merge folder contents (pro)
  • Widgets in dock (pro)
  • Overlapping widgets (pro)
  • Some bugfixes

If you want to give the new version a go, just download and install as you would any other 3rd-party application. After our initial use, we must say it is as smooth as butter. And with the added swiping abilities, it has become our new favorite launcher. That is, until the next best launcher comes out.

    parsing error…

  • MrEnglish

Well, I spoke too soon. Going back to Nova until they get the bugs worked out on Apex. Love the features MUCH more, but the lag, jitters, and crashes just won’t work for a business phone. Still going to watch this one though, because it has just about everything I want in an ICS launcher. Nova just works better for now.

  • Tonto

    I dig it.

  • Bigmac1336

I keep getting an “Error Parsing the Package” when I try to install it… I’ve tried deleting & re-downloading, rebooting the phone & re-downloading, but the same error… Any ideas?  (Stock Razr Maxx)

      Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

  • Tim Buchanan

Would anyone mind listing some of the options that Apex has that makes it better than Nova?  I’m trying to chose which one I should use.  thanks!

    • kulanapan

Vertical dock margin option…that’s all I was waiting for. Going to use Apex exclusively now.

      • STiK

        What is vertical dock margin?

  • Binglut9

What does widgets in dock mean?

    • Tim Buchanan

I think it means that when you go to view all of your apps, if you scroll all the way to the right, there will be widgets to chose from, rather than long pressing on the home screen.

      • I’m using the market version of Apex now.  You can see the widgets in the drawer, but you can’t add them to the home screen from the drawer without Apex being a system app (root).  So maybe this will make it possible for non rooted users without having to long press the home screen?  Or maybe add the “root helper” as Nova does.  Who knows, doesn’t bother me none, I’ll just move to the root system app just like before either way.

    • Neutrontwin

its means u can have 1X1 widgets in the dock, meaning in the row with the app drawer

  • MrEnglish

Just damn sexy. Nova is taking a back seat to Apex for a while. LOVE the missed call/sms/gmail badges. Smooth as silk too. Def a contender for home app d’ jour.

  • hothfox

Glad there’s finally a homescreen replacement that figured out how to make unread badges work with the newer Gmail API.

  • Gnexorgnex

    Yay Gnex-life is back

    • kixofmyg0t

It’s not just about the “G-Nex”. I happen to use Apex Launcher on my Bionic, DX and D2G.

  • RedPandaAlex

Guess I’ll have to go pro. The dock swipe gestures were the one thing I had really been missing from LauncherPro.

  • whenjasonattks

I hope it doesn’t have constant homescreen redraws cause that was my main issue with Apex. I use Nova cause it never has redraws but I like Apex much more.

    • kixofmyg0t

What phone do you have? Could you be RAM limited? I’ve only noticed redraw on my DX and D2G when coming out of Apex settings or a RAM heavy app. Never had redraw on my Bionic yet.

Nova: this is how you separate cool pro features from free features. that is all.

Is there no hope that Launcher Pro will ever be resurrected?  Did the dev die or just take our money and run?

      • Sqube

Ah, Launcher Pro. Last I heard, he was talking about a ground-up rewrite of the whole thing.

That was two phones ago for me. I gave him $5 and I don’t regret it, but I also don’t ever expect to hear anything about the software ever again. It’s still great for everyone running FroYo and GB, but I don’t see a reason to be running it with an ICS device unless you just really like it.

        • John

The last everyone heard was from year(s) ago. If you want to keep your following, you’d try & spit out some info like “still working on it” every now-n-then. doesn’t make sense to go completely silent IMO

      • John

he took the a ssload of $$ he made & ran.

i don’t get it either. he had a huge following that he could’ve banked on too!
but i mean…if he had personal crap come up, at least come out & say it “i’ve got too much going on in my life. sorry guys. maybe someone in the far future” would’ve been better than the nothing he left us with. oh well.

at least we have some great options available for ICS 🙂

        • Firelight

Fede had time to bang out a Music Player app last year and take folks money for that. He just doesn’t have a priority to keeping his promises. As others have said that was a DX and GB ago and I’m on the Apex train right now, too.

Just opted to the new beta and I’ll pop out some pennies for it when it goes live later. Love it on my GummyNex 1.0 ROM

  • Jason Purp

Ugh, when will we be able to use custom dock backgrounds in Nova or Apex?!

  • T4rd

I didn’t even know there was a Pro version of Apex.  I’m going to buy it RIGHT MEOW!

    • OfficerRamRod

Meow hear this, I didn’t even meow there was a pro version. Meow this could be worth getting. For meow apex is the best Launcher IMeowO. I hope they fix the lag it caused on meow galaxy nexus, it seemed to slow down the system a lot. For meow I’m going to try the beta before I decide to buy cause the lag was as bad and slow as moto blur on meow gnex. Oh yeah, Meow

  • sc0rch3d

by far my fave feature on APEX is the ability to double tap homescreen to bring up a configurable settings screen. that alone deleted like 4 of my homescreen shortcuts
