Video: Custom Navigation Buttons Coming to a Galaxy Nexus ROM Near You, That Would be App Shortcuts

YouTube Preview Image

Just when you thought we were running out of tweaks that could be done to Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Nexus, the folks behind AOKP have something new to show:  custom navigations buttons. Since the G-Nex sports on-screen buttons, developers have realized that this area could be used for more than back, menu, search and home. What if you added a shortcut to your most-used app, like say the browser? Or maybe you need to text or pop up the camera at a moment’s notice? You will be able to, very soon.

Cheers Picolas!

    That is pretty sweeeeeeet

  • Blah

What happens when you remove your back and home button on accident and go into an app that has no easy way out? Any one else smelling a bug here?

Worst case you have to reboot to get to the launcher and reach this button customizer again.

hopefully they put in a long press action on the nav bar or similar to launch the customizer

  • Michael Rango

I just want to know how you got the divider at the bottom of the dock and above the nav bar

  • bro

I don’t understand.  I have a browser icon, a camera icon, and a text icon all on my homescreen already.  Right there.  At a moments notice.

ehh I will stay with CM9.

    • Tim242

CM9 has almost no options as of yet. AOKP is loaded with options, and is buttery smooth.

      • drparty

I would agree with Tim, AOKP has basically dominated the alternative rom market since the beginning on the Galaxy Nexus. I really doubt CM9 will be worth it once they get everything settled it. Just too much development over at AOKP.

  • Telephoneteck

I have cool playstation buttons for my softkeys.

How to make AOSP look like this in three easy steps!

  • John-Mark Clawson

This is great.. but I am still waiting for them to add the option to have a transparent Nav bar background.

  • MikeCiggy

Pretty awesome. Like a few have said if we can get a app draw icon down there i’d be looking for a launcher that allows me a 6×5 screen for widgets and other icons i’d be a very happy gnex owner :)

  • r0lct

    Can’t wait for build 30!

  • cizzlen

Cool idea but not practical for my use. I can easily get to my browser or other apps I need from my custom lock screen.

    • Tim242

I still do not understand why people want shortcuts on the lock screen. I disable my lock screen.

  • http://twitter.com/na3800 Aaron

This is nice, toss an app drawer sortcut down there and BAM, no more icons but the nav bar.

  • John Burke

Been looking for a convincing reason to finally root my Galaxy Nexus … this might just be it

  • shr1k3r

Please let it have a folder!

  • http://www.youtube.com/kimirPORTALS kimir

I don’t really like it. Not sure I would use it, but I am sure a bunch of other people will.

  • Stephen

    Ok that’s freaking awesome

  • Destroythanet

This is the reason why soft keys are WAAAAY better than permanent capacitive buttons.

  • John

anyone had better luck running Apex launcher versus Nova? Less homescreen redraws etc..?

  • Walter Bennett

I posted this question/Mod on several forums when I first got my GNex a few months ago and offered up my limited abilities to help. I was just throwing it out there for anyone to create because I just wanted that functionality so bad. I am so happy it has been figured out. AOKP update here I come.

  • Kris Brandt

Why would anyone want an iPhone after seeing just how cool Android can be…?

    • http://twitter.com/WaltPartlo Walter Partlo

Android phones are too big to fit in hipster skinny jeans pockets.

      • http://twitter.com/kjwilk91 Kyle Wilkins

        I lol’ed. That was funny.

      • feztheforeigner

There are plenty of Androids smaller than the iPhone to fit in those hipsters’ pockets. That’s the beauty of several hundred devices running Android (my app is available on 1,219 devices according to the Developer Console).

      • Soopophishle

I like mines bulging out. cot damn Galaxy Note

    • EdubE24

Not everyone nerds out on their phones…

  • Peeyourownpants

anyone know if this stacks with lmt’s pie navigation control?

  • http://profiles.google.com/babybybusta Andrew Thompson

AOKP is my ROM of choice when I get bored of stock. I really only use it for the search button in the navbar and the setting toggles.

    • John

Lockscreen customization is pretty big for me. I utilize a custom quad lock screen like no other :)

      • sc0rch3d

my company requires PIN lock therefore my lockscreen customization are limited. i think CM7 had a way to disable. has AOKP or anyone else done this?

        • sirmeili

I’m not sure if this is stock behavior (pretty sure it’s not), but you can have AOKP show the lock screen before the pin. Adds an extra step and the notifications pull down doesn’t work, but you can do it. And yes, you can still access the different apps using this method (you just have to enter your pin after you slide to the app you want to open)*

*Sorry, that last part is a bit confusing, but if you’ve added the extra apps to the slide to unlock thing in AOKP, you know what I’m talking about.

          • sc0rch3d

yea it makes sense…i was on AOKP for awhile (now on a axi0m crossbreed, which is AOKP hybrid) and had that, but it’s just annoying.

I would be happy if my company allowed PATTERN unlock, but most of our users are not Android and therefore PIN is the best cross platform method.

  • http://twitter.com/WaltPartlo Walter Partlo

You could get rid of the dock with this, but Zaph says that he does not have access to the app drawer yet.

    • Walter Bennett

App drawer is my big reason for wanting this. Although with ADW launcher you can put an app drawer icon anywhere so it is still cool.

      • Bodhiballer

Tablets in particular could use that, I never understood why they put the app draw button all the way up in the upper right corner.

    • Tim242

I already got rid of my dock, with ADW EX. I think.docks are pointless. I’d rather have the regular icons instead.

  • http://www.kovdev.com/ koveleski

Now we need someone to make a set of Navigation style icons for the basic apps so we don’t have full colored icons staring at us in every app.

    • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

Exactly what I was about to post. Full color icons down there is fugly. Hopefully the AOKP devs  will be kind enough to allow icon customization.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

If you both watch the video again, it looks like there is an option to to change the icon like most of the modifications done to AOKP.

        • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

Not seeing it. But that’s great if so.

  • John

badass. can’t wait to see the creative stuff people will come up with!
