Google Maps 8-Bit Coming Soon, Cartridge Blowing Allowed

When it comes to April Fools’ activities, no one does it up like Google. To get an early start on the festivities, they released their first product in Google Maps 8-bit. Yeah, that 8-bit. Just watch the video and laugh at your years with the original NES. Oh, and this video makes it sound like we may see an Android version in the next couple of days. Cannot wait.

To try it on your browser today, head over to Google Maps and click the “Quest” button in the top right.

Update:  It looks like they had even more fun with it than originally thought. Here is what you get when searching for “Google Headquarters” or if you go into Streetview:

Its working on google maps on iOS. Pretty cool Google 😛

I cant believe we haven’t had one comment yet to the effect of “why don’t you spend less time on jokes and more time building ics for *insert phone here*??????”

    • Tom

Probably because ICS is done. It’s up to the carriers and manufacturers to develop their version for the specific phone.
Plus, Lighten up. If it was all work and no play, the creative process would fall apart.

lol dude thats what I was pointing out. I am saying I fully expected someone to post that being serious. I apologize for not coming across more sarcastic.

  • Jon

Epic! Love looking at my neighborhood in eight bit.

  • Tom

Too bad it doesn’t work on the phone’s Google Maps App.

  • Ivo Shandor

Dragon Warrior! That Blue Knight is defending Erdrick’s Armor!

  • Loch Ness Monster http://g.co/maps/c97rv

  • Now we know why the Nexus update was pushed. Can’t think of a better reason.

  • I threw up a bunch of pics on Twitter under #8BitGoogleMaps

  • Bob Martin

Google has taken the concept of an “April fools joke” to a whole new level.

  • Bob Martin

Will this be released for my Super Nintendo?

    • hkklife

No, that was a 16-bit system.  This is classis 8-bit, baby!  Original NES !

  • Jason

Good stuff, however I think they missed a chance to poke Apple and MS.  Looked up their headquarters and nothing.  They should have put in a patent lawyer monster at Cupertino at least.  Maybe Jabba the money grubbing license fee bastard up in Seattle.

    • msnight04

I looked up Apple and MS also and was a little disappointed.

      • JaeLim

Bunch of Sheeps in Cupertino and and bald greedy person in MS headquarters would’ve made my day.

        • Master O’Disaster

You guys are being silly. Google web tools are for everyone to use, including Apple employees. It is where Google makes their billions. Doing anything like y’all suggested (like … ahem … sheep in Cupertino?) would have been just plain stooopid for Google to do. April Fools pranks are supposed to be fun, not spiteful.

  • Fuyuasha

Search for Tokyo to see an neat Fuji-san!

  • EvanTheGamer

This is all fine and dandy and all, but this kind of defeats the purpose of an April Fools’ gag, as it’s not April Fools’ Day yet. lol

    • EvanTheGamer

EDIT: Okay, scratch that..this is pretty f’n awesome and glad I seen this today! Thanks, Google!

    • I’m about 99.2% sure that this is the April Fools joke from the Japan team, and it is already April 1st there. There will be more tomorrow.

      • EvanTheGamer

Oh…yes, that’s right, completely forgot about that.
And yeah, there will be LOTS more tomorrow. April Fools’ is easily one of my most favorite of days in the year. It’s really interesting to see what websites can come up with, in such creative ways.

  • This is awesome

  • troll level: google

  • Dan Lopez

    I love everything about this!

  • Alex

The Taj Mahal is also there 🙂

  • bjn714

And it seems to be styled after my favorite NES game – Dragon Warrior! Awesome job Google.
