How to: Manually Update DROID3 to Build 5.6.890

The “soak test” for this first DROID3 update is happening right now, but if you want to go ahead and update early, we have the instructions for you below.  The update includes Google Talk with Video along with a variety of bug fixes that should improve battery life.  Here is the full list.

Download:  update.rar

Instructions:

1.  Download the file from above to your computer and unzip it.
2.  You should see a file named “Blur_Version.5.5.959.XT862.Verizon.en.US.zip”.
3.  Drop that file on the root of your SD card.
4.  Power off your phone.
5.  Boot into recovery by holding X + Power until the Android logo appears.
6.  Then press and release both the Volume UP and Down key at the same time.
7.  Using the volume keys, scroll down to “apply update from sdcard” and tap Power.
8.  Highlight the “Blur_Version.5.5.959.XT862.Verizon.en.US.zip” file and press Power.
9.  The update will be applied.  Sit back and relax.
10.  When it finishes, reboot and enjoy!

Cheers Anthony!

I tired this and get an error.  assert failed:  apply_patch_check (“/system/app/BooksPhone.apk”, [bunk of letters and numbers]) E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 7).  Tried it several times with different downloads. Same file all the time.  The only thing done to my phone was rooting it.  I expect thats part of the problem.

do you need to be rooted to do this update?

  • http://twitter.com/howzball Mike

Is it possible I’ve already gotten this update OTA because my phone rebooted and now says System Version 5.5.959.XT862 ?
I didn’t pay attention to what it did when it rebooted, it’s a Droid 3 and it just does this sort of thing, ya know?

After running this update, I am not able to complete root.I get the following error with psouza4′s one-clickRunning exploit step 3 of 3 (adding su, busybox, and superuser.apk)… FAIL!ERROR: we have root, but couldn’t push busybox. Not sure why!

Is swype completely jacked up for anyone else after this?  Mine is completely unusable.  I’ve rebooted the phone a couple times and still swype remains a mess.  Anyone else having this issue?

    • JVKing

      Mines fine

    • Jeremy Cerullo

I had to switch my Swype settings back to English. For some reason the update changed it to Spanish.

Still cant get video on gtalk to work

Something really strange, my SD card was from my droid1, When I use my computer to look at the files on it, there are some old ClockworkMod and what not, when I try to delete them it says I cant, when I boot into recovery I can see those files, but when I go into Astro, they don’t exist, but the new files I put on there do, but when I go into recovery it does not see those new files… Any ideas what that might be?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Ryan57ford Ryan Chapman

I can’t get the blur file to show up in my recovery, I use to flash stuff to my old droid all the time, so I don’t get why im having difficulties here…

  • Paul Licht

I did the update right, I’m pretty sure at least…but I’m not seeing google video talk. Anyone else having this issue? I believe the update worked because there’s a significant increase in speed and my screen doesn’t studder anymore when changing orientation.

    • androidman

I checked it I don’t remember what I did but I did see a video option for it and a green camera popped up next to my status.  I love the update, the phone runs like its suppose to now.

Will this work with missing apps?

  • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

I lost root and can’t get it back?  What in the world?  Is there a newer root method than v7, one click from xda?  I updated and ran the root exploit, and can’t get the root apps to have superuser permissions?  Am I hallucinating?  Someone help!!!!

    • ngilbert1290

      Mine worked fine.

    • Big Fern

Same deal here…i lost root with this update. WTF! havent tried getting it back though. tonight ill try one click root again.

OK…I got mine figured out.  Like Lucas Bueno, my SD card has been from OG Droid to D2 to D3.  When I moved the card from D2 to D3, Android took the entire contents of the card and moved in into a FOLDER on the card named “sdcard-ext”.  When I went into recovery mode, instead of looking for the “blur…whatever” file name, I saw “update.zip”.  I just highlighted this file and hit the power button.  That’s when the system looked at the file and said that the signature verification failed.  Of course it failed…what it was seeing was the Gingerbread update file from my old D2.  What this means is that Android was NOT looking in the root of my SD card, it was looking in the “sdcard-ext” folder.  When I got over my brainfart and realized this, I moved the new .zip file into the “sdcard-ext” folder and tried again.  Android found the right file and the update worked.  Now, it’s time to explore the new goodies.  Hope this helps some people.

I bet this is my problem, we shall see!

      • http://www.facebook.com/Ryan57ford Ryan Chapman

Nope, I have stuck that file just about everywhere, never shows up in the list… So strange.

I renamed mine to “update.zip”…don’t know if that helps or not.  I do recall that for previous updates (gingerbread, for instance), we were told to rename it as that.

    • LRiley

sdcard is the internal memory and sdcard-ext is the external sdcard…recovery reads the external sd

      • Anonymous

That makes sense.  I just don’t recall ever seeing the “sdcard” vs “sdcard-ext” on my two previous Droids.

  • androidman

Should you do this update with a full battery?  I know its a dumb question but I have heard to do these updates with a full battery but want to make sure.

    • Anonymous

I started with 48% of an extended battery and wound up with 17% after the update and reboot.  First boot with the new update took about three minutes.  I was starting to get worried, but it looks like all is ok.

      • androidman

Thanks for the reply just charged it up to be on the safe side, started to get worried during the install but so far so good.  Ok it loaded took me three minutes as well.  I like it so far, you can notice a speed increase.

Mine keeps failing at the verification stage before it begins applying the update.  Other posters on other forums are saying that the MD5 sum of this update is identical to that of the earlier leaked version.  I’m leaving it alone until i get the OTA.

  • T Sanden

I cant get into recover mode. The logo comes up but when I press volume up and the the down key at the same time nothing happens! What am I doing wrong?

    • Anonymous

You are pushing VOLUME up and VOLUME down at the same time, correct?  Or are you pushing VOLUME up and the KEYBOARD down key?  I did that once :)  You’re supposed to push both ends of the volume rocker at the same time.

It seems that Blur_Version.5.5.959.XT862.Verizon.en.US is already the System version on my Droid 3- altough the build version is 5.5.1_84_d3g-20_TA-9… in looking inside of the zip file there are 6 files dated 8-2011  all others from 2009 … interesting on how little may be different.. comments ?

Thanks Droid-Life.  Directions were spot on and very easy.

my sdcard is a mess! i can’t even understand what’s going on… I’ve used it on the OG Droid, Droid 2, and Droid 2 Global… and now I have it on the Droid 3. There are so many folders everywhere… multiple sdcard folders and what not – does anyone know a good way to clean this up without deleting things you shouldn’t? It has folders for Apps that were installed and then uninstalled LONG ago… help?

  • http://www.facebook.com/cucabueno Lucas Bueno

this is odd… i put it in the root of the SDcard but when i get to “apply update from sdcard” i can’t find it. it has some other random folders/files that i haven’t used in ages…

If I install this and they(the carrier) add/change the update, will I still be able to take the new(er) OTA once its released do you think?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1133127578 Randy Luna

    • Benjamin Landwehr

  • Ulf Schuster

I love this phone, … live in germany and imported it from the us… I love it soooo much! :)

  • king minestry

how do i get this to work.  I download the file. IT comes in a .rar.  What do i do next

    • Avery Edmunds

      im having the same problem

    • LRiley

      the instructions say unzip…

    • Spongehead

I tried downloading to my phone and using ArchiDroid to extract the .zip from inside the .rar.  It said it extracted.  I used Astro to move the .zip file to the rood of my SD card, then followed the instructions above.  The update failed because the update file didn’t have the right signature.  I’m guessing that it didn’t extract properly.  Now I’m downloading the .rar to my laptop and I’ll extract with winrar, then copy the .zip to the root of my SD card and try again.  Hope this helps.

    Im having problems with this

Can you use clockwork mod to flash this?

    Isn’t 5.5.959 the original version?

    • Stephen D

The file is name 5.5.959, but it actually updates you to .890. I have no idea why, but that’s how it is. I’ve been on this for a few days now and it’s great. It fixed the random reboots and blue tint to the camera.

      • Anonymous

Oh thank god the camera is driving me nuts

  • LRiley

oooo my post on droid-life that’s great…would have reported to you guys if I knew how

I’m sure a dev will release a rooted version soon enough if this one breaks the root exploit.
