Hulu Plus Isn’t Supposed To Work On Rooted Devices, Does It Work On Yours?

A reader just sent us over an email he received from the Hulu team concerning why he couldn’t find the Hulu+ app on the Android Market from his rooted DROIDX running Gingerbread. The Hulu rep asked him numerous questions including, “Is your phone rooted? (Unfortunately, we are not able to support rooted phones)”. The only thing about that, is that it doesn’t state anywhere that the Hulu+ app doesn’t support rooted devices.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your email. I’m very sorry you are having problems locating the Hulu Plus application in the Android Market. I’d love to help figure this out, so if you have a moment, the answers to the following questions will help me track down what’s going on here:

• Who is your carrier? (Verizon, AT&T, etc.)
• What is model number? (Go to Settings > About Phone)
• What is the Android version? (Go to Settings > About Phone)
Is your phone rooted? (Unfortunately, we are not able to support rooted phones)
• What is your IMEI number? It’s available via Settings -> ‘About Phone’ or ‘System Info’ varies slightly from phone to phone.

I look forward to your response.

Hulu Support

What thickens the plot even more, is that we can view Hulu videos on our rooted DROIDX running Froyo, but not our DROIDX running GB. Is it just a rooted gingerbread deal? I have no luck on my rooted Nexus S, even though the Nexus is supposedly one of the supported devices as listed in the Market.

So that’s why we’re asking you. Out of the handful of people who have a device that is supported by Hulu, are you rooted or not rooted? Does the app work, or not? Let us know!

Cheers Chris!

I have a rooted G2, running CM nightly. G2 is a supported device, but evidently not for root.

  • Fish

Rooted Thunderbolt (stock software – no updates) streaming “House” over Hulu Plus with no problems.

While I can see Hulu Plus in the market, and it doesn’t show an available update, I actually got the app on this phone through a Titanium Backup restore from my Droid X. I restored the app + data and didn’t even have to login again.

  • Renshy

Rooted HTC EVO 4G The app did not work at first on my phone, but I found a fix for it on http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/282962 and now it works.

  • Roots2go

I have rooted Nook Color running CM7 and have installed CM7 on the Blue Dot Nooks as well, Hulu works fine. I’m using http://www.bigrushmods.com/xoom/modz/Flash_10.3-Hulufied_BRDizzle.apk, courtesy of Huskermania (think he got from XDA) but it doesn’t work on my rooted myTouch 4g running CM7….????

  • Rooted on HTC Inredible, android 2.3.2 cyanogen mod 7.0, and it’s a no go unfortunately : any ideas?

  • Rooted

  • Ctbalk

I have a rooted Incredible running CM 7.0.3.  I downloaded the application (com.hulu.plus-1.apk) from the XDA forums then installed it.  It worked perfectly for about 4 days and then, yesterday, I saw the “Device Not Supported” screen.

My guess is that Hulu has some means of checking your hardware or seeing that it’s rooted and blocking access?  If anyone knows a way around this, l’m interested!

So, in conclusion:  Rooted: yes, works: yes and no but no.

  • Asdfasdf

    Working on DX, Liberty 0.9.

TB running Das Bamf Remix GB 2.1 works great.

      • Anonymous

  • Sikesjb

Works on Nook Color CM7.1.0 RC 1 with Nexus S build.prop.

Did work on Incredible Liberation 2.3.3……not sure what happend. Never updated, but now it pops up with this unsupported device error.

Point of the question is that they do not PROVIDE SUPPORT, that doesn’t automatically say that it will not work …

You are taking this out of context entirely.

    • Chuck

they block you out of the program with this message shown, thats why adfree is needed in some cases

  • Granted

He’s probably asking for Hulu so they can read your posts and find better ways to block rooted users.

    • Chris

If I’m asking for Hulu… they better give me a really big check for it!

I was hoping there was an issue with THEIR product after I already paid for the app.  Then I was told no I can’t use my rooted DX on it.  So I gave them the ,,!,, and told them to cram their service up their a$$

i think if you pay extra for hulu plus they should support your phone rooted or not

thats stupid no i might have to unroot my phone

  • Ray

works fine on droidx hateraid 2.0

I feel like it’s not that it’s not SUPPOSED to, it’s just not SUPPORTED. When you root something, you change settings that aren’t supposed to be changed, which makes it harder to troubleshoot. They just don’t want to go through the trouble of troubleshooting rooted devices.

    • KevinC

not to mention it’s 99% of the time the ROMs fault anyway, or system instability due to overclocking techniques.

  • Anonymous

Working on my DX with Liberty .8

  • Kyle

I also got the same response and the same exact issue on my rooted Droid2, running CM7. The rep told me that there is a check in the code (similar to the one that checks devices for root and renting videos with the market) that will refuse root access.

  • slappynutz

verzion, driod x, rooted .596 work perfect.

  • Luke Dosiek

Works fine on both my rooted D2 w/ 2.2 and my Nook Color w/ 2.3. Had to disable ad blockers and reset hosts files to get vids to load, but I never got that error message shown above…

  • Jaeremy32

app works on my tbolt rooted bamfrc5 but it doesnt connect to video, just has black screen

  • Runnning fine on my rooted dx running gingerbread the only thing i changed was adblock and a bit of bloatware removal CityID

  • I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

BTW, Netflix is working great, too!

Switched to “Resevoir Dogs” and Hulu+ Better than “Mob Wives)

    • Owner

I rooted my droid x and installed add block and Then frustrated with hulu when it stopped working, I tried many things including uninstalling the add blocker with no success until, I read this post! I reinstalled add blocker and clicked revert, and Walla!, it worked!

Thank you so much for this post!,
      Dan S

      • Owner

Sorry the add blocker apps name was addfree

  • Hauthisis

My rooted DX on Gingerbread works.

  • Custom Colonel

He means they do not provide support for rooted phones, not that rooted phones somehow cause the app to not work…

  • guest

hulu+ just had an update on the market and now my phone does not run hulu+ – droid X

Oops… mine works. I have not yet subscribed, but I got the app from the Market, and the free programming is fine. I have a rooted Droid X, running the rooted version of gingerbread 596 that appeared right after the official release.

I’ve tried it on my dx rooted and I’ve sbf’d back to froyo and the official gingerbread update and no dice on any software. However, I am still in the first month free program, and that is what I’m assuming is the problem.

I think all of these video sites are missing out on bigtime with all the restrictions.

    • Guest

i think you need to look at the big picture and realize it’s a licensing issue.

      • This is true, unfortunately.  I’m surprised Netflix isn’t in the same boat.

        • Chris

I’m glad Netflix isn’t in the same boat.  Will be a sad day when they do put it up.

I was about to get a Hulu Plus subscription until I saw the limited phone support and lack of support for rooted phones. -1 for Hulu

  • Acrusso

prolly just referring to technical support and not the actual application support

    • This. That probably should have said “we are not able to *provide support for* rooted phones”.
