Hulu Plus Isn’t Supposed To Work On Rooted Devices, Does It Work On Yours?

A reader just sent us over an email he received from the Hulu team concerning why he couldn’t find the Hulu+ app on the Android Market from his rooted DROIDX running Gingerbread. The Hulu rep asked him numerous questions including, “Is your phone rooted? (Unfortunately, we are not able to support rooted phones)”. The only thing about that, is that it doesn’t state anywhere that the Hulu+ app doesn’t support rooted devices.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your email. I’m very sorry you are having problems locating the Hulu Plus application in the Android Market. I’d love to help figure this out, so if you have a moment, the answers to the following questions will help me track down what’s going on here:

• Who is your carrier? (Verizon, AT&T, etc.)
• What is model number? (Go to Settings > About Phone)
• What is the Android version? (Go to Settings > About Phone)
Is your phone rooted? (Unfortunately, we are not able to support rooted phones)
• What is your IMEI number? It’s available via Settings -> ‘About Phone’ or ‘System Info’ varies slightly from phone to phone.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,
Devin L.
Hulu Support

What thickens the plot even more, is that we can view Hulu videos on our rooted DROIDX running Froyo, but not our DROIDX running GB. Is it just a rooted gingerbread deal? I have no luck on my rooted Nexus S, even though the Nexus is supposedly one of the supported devices as listed in the Market.

So that’s why we’re asking you. Out of the handful of people who have a device that is supported by Hulu, are you rooted or not rooted? Does the app work, or not? Let us know!

Cheers Chris!

I have a rooted G2, running CM nightly. G2 is a supported device, but evidently not for root.

Rooted Thunderbolt (stock software – no updates) streaming “House” over Hulu Plus with no problems.

While I can see Hulu Plus in the market, and it doesn’t show an available update, I actually got the app on this phone through a Titanium Backup restore from my Droid X. I restored the app + data and didn’t even have to login again.

Rooted HTC EVO 4G The app did not work at first on my phone, but I found a fix for it on http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/282962 and now it works.

I have rooted Nook Color running CM7 and have installed CM7 on the Blue Dot Nooks as well, Hulu works fine. I’m using http://www.bigrushmods.com/xoom/modz/Flash_10.3-Hulufied_BRDizzle.apk, courtesy of Huskermania (think he got from XDA) but it doesn’t work on my rooted myTouch 4g running CM7….????

    Rooted

I have a rooted Incredible running CM 7.0.3.  I downloaded the application (com.hulu.plus-1.apk) from the XDA forums then installed it.  It worked perfectly for about 4 days and then, yesterday, I saw the “Device Not Supported” screen.

My guess is that Hulu has some means of checking your hardware or seeing that it’s rooted and blocking access?  If anyone knows a way around this, l’m interested!

So, in conclusion:  Rooted: yes, works: yes and no but no.

Running the Droid X on Verizon with a rooted version of Gingerbread.  I don’t have any problems with Hulu Plus.  I found it on the market and it’s great!

I as well as my friends came checking out the nice strategies on your web site while instantly I had a terrible suspicion I had not thanked the website owner for those techniques. These young men are already absolutely excited to learn all of them and already have seriously been loving those things. We appreciate you genuinely well helpful and for selecting such fine useful guides most people are really wanting to understand about. My sincere apologies for not expressing gratitude to you sooner.

Point of the question is that they do not PROVIDE SUPPORT, that doesn’t automatically say that it will not work …

You are taking this out of context entirely.

    • Chuck

they block you out of the program with this message shown, thats why adfree is needed in some cases

  • Granted

He’s probably asking for Hulu so they can read your posts and find better ways to block rooted users.

    • Chris

If I’m asking for Hulu… they better give me a really big check for it!

I was hoping there was an issue with THEIR product after I already paid for the app.  Then I was told no I can’t use my rooted DX on it.  So I gave them the ,,!,, and told them to cram their service up their a$$

i think if you pay extra for hulu plus they should support your phone rooted or not
