Motorola Introduces Milestone3 (DROID3) In China (Updated)

“Looks more like a DROID3 to me”. The first sentence in an email we just received regarding Motorola’s release of the 3rd generation of the Milestone. Well, it is a DROID3, but only to us Americans. It’s thinner, faster, and all packed into an extremely slim and streamlined package. We’re looking forward to this release (minus the pentile screen) in the states, which is still slotted for July 7th to our best ‘guesstimations’. Since we’re seeing release in international markets now, we should start hypebeastin’ this immediately.

Some of the confirmed specs which we already knew from this post:

  • Dual-core processor
  • 4″ qHD screen
  • Android 2.3
  • 5-row slideout keyboard
  • 16GB internal storage
  • Global capabilities
  • 8MP camera (1080p video)
  • Front camera for video chatting

  • I intended to create you one tiny word just to give thanks the moment again for your personal nice information you’ve featured on this website. It is certainly surprisingly open-handed with people like you to offer freely what a lot of people could have distributed for an e-book to help make some profit on their own, principally considering the fact that you might have done it in case you desired. These good tips likewise acted as the great way to be certain that the rest have the same dream just like my very own to know way more with regards to this matter. I am sure there are several more fun sessions ahead for many who looked over your blog post.

My rather long internet research has now been compensated with high-quality content to talk about with my co-workers. I ‘d suppose that most of us website visitors actually are very lucky to be in a useful site with very many perfect professionals with very beneficial techniques. I feel rather lucky to have encountered the website and look forward to plenty of more fun minutes reading here. Thanks a lot again for all the details.

    thats a sweet device…

This is NOT the Droid we are looking for!!!!!!!!

  • hallry

If my Droid 2 is broken, what do you think the chances are (if i wait until after this comes out) of it being replaced with a Droid 3?

    • Anonymous

  • Ben-jamin

HEll yes! Cannot wait! You dont need more then 512 RAM with a processor that fast and software sliming down all the time.

    • n=1

Software slimming down all the time??? Have you seen the latest Swype beta? I think it’s 14 Megs. Even the Starbucks app is 11 Megs.

  • Too bad this isn’t 4g.  Not buying another phone until I can get 4g with a hardware keyboard.  Real shame they put this out in 3g only.

  • Anonymous

Is this phone still expected to have 512mb of ram??  That is a real disappointment if so.

  • Jcorf

    I’m so exciteddddd!!!

  • Rp780

Droid 3 or Bionic (if ever released)? Help guys!!!

    • Anonymous

If the specs for the Droid 3 are correct than Bionic will be better.

  • Anonymous

    Whoa, Tegra 2? That’s a surprise.

  • I love that keyboard….

    • James_Ever

I do too, Glad they decided to add the blue to the qwerty keyboard. I hope they keep it this way with the Droid3 version here in the US. And the screen looks great to me in that screenshot, with Global capabilities, the cameras, bigger screen, this will be my next device. Please let there be a pre-release at the end of the month or sooner!!!

  • Why does Motorola always appear to bargin with itself? “Well its DDR2, so only 512MB” “Dual Core, so PenTile” and I’m under the assumption that “16GB internal storage” means no SD card slot? If Motorola would just listen to it’s customers, the DroMilestone 3 could have been very good. When’s the Droid4 come out guys!?!!!

    • James_Ever

I thought the other picks showed that there was both a slot for an SD card and SIM card? Am I right in this presumption that there will be an external memory Kellex?

      • James_Ever

Yeah, I just looked at the first leaked screenshoots of the back and it shows a little micro SD card alt above the battery in white so I believe this will have external memory as well. Can someone please back me up on what I just saw please?

  • Though, the RAM isn’t as huge as of an issue as most are making it out to be. It’s 512MB of DDR2 RAM, not just DDR1, like the OG Droid was.

  • Why is it so difficult for a manufacturer to make a decent qwerty android phone? The Droid 3’s form factor looks great..but the RAM, locked bootloader, power button in the middle, and lack of camera button, make it less than a formidable contender.

    • Anonymous

Power button in the middle?  Really?

  • Anonymous

  • anyone have a guess as to the overall physical dimensions on this?

  • Interstellarmind

moto = dropping the ball hardcore. looks like htc, or even samsung, can really take over here.

  • Doc

Does the Droid 2 have a pentile screen as well? I just need something to compare against.

    • Anonymous

droid 2 does not. droid x2 does

  • Me Chinese
    Me play joke
Me put pee-pee in your phone
    (crap that does not rhyme)

  • Does it have the same half-assed physical keyboard they put in the original Droid?

  • peoploe are so picky….most people on this and every other android based website couldnt wait for this phone now their all eh blur sucks and the pentile screen sucks coming with any and all excuse not to get it. to me those are such minor details that really shouldnt take away from the device itself. this phone will be badass and if your gonna let those things ruin it for then just stick with your old droid forever and stop whining

    • Interstellarmind

Luke when your drop $200-$300 (or for some, maybe even $500-$600) on something, anything, you have full right to expect everything on it to be exactly to your wants.

      • Luke’s parents likely buy his phone for him, which is why he doesn’t seem to understand this concept.

        • yes they do, they actually wipe my ass for me as well 😉

      • so what phone has launched that is exactly what you were looking ofr? the perfect phone will never come out and yes your right you have the right to that doesnt mean its annoying as hell to here everyone on these sites complain complain complain……

        • Anonymous

          Bunch of whining little crybabies.

    • I don’t know if you’ve seen the photos they have up here comparing the X2, X, and Nexus S’ screens. But I’m pretty sure the screen quality is a huge part of buying a phone. I don’t think you would buy a TV that’s colors are off just because it’s 1080p, would ja? Blur on the other hand. UI is greatly a part of what defines a phone (thus why manufactures skin Android). Why should we settle for a sub-par skin when the vanilla UI is very complete and runs better? You wouldn’t buy a nice Corvette, Mustang, ect… if the seats were covered in torn zebra fur and the dash and ceiling were covered in shag carpet, would ja?

      • thats not the point, the point is that everytime a new phone comes out theres always something wrong with it and to be honest blur sucks of course but so do most ui’s with the exception of sense imo. but they arent going anywhere so throw a launcher on it. as for screen quality have you seen it first hand? yea hthat pentile is shit but its better than the res on the og….my point is that none of the phones coming out are going to perfect so people should quit knitpicking.

      • Anonymous

The Nexus S has a pentile screen as well.  You are aware of that right? I don’t see people whining all over the place about it.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to take a wild guess and assume locked bootloader.

  • Dash Speeds

Why is there such hate for the screen? Engadget listed the qHD screen as a positive in the DX2, and they are notorious for being picky when it comes to reviewing screen quality.

  • It only has 512 mb of RAM, right?  What a fu*king joke Moto.

    • Ravenlore

BUT it’s DDR2. There are folks saying that will make a shedload of difference.

      I hope they’re right.

  • Anonymous

please let it be 4G LTE when it comes to verizon!

  • Anonymous

to all of us who got the droid on the drop date the date for an upgrade is july 6. this phone makes alot of sense but not with that stupid screen and blur. i will be getting the thunderbolt then will sell it for the next awesome 4g device from verizon so i can still have unlimited 4g data. everyone should do this

    • Interstellarmind

exactly when i did, jerflash. though, i think i will stick with HTC after using the tbolt.

      • Interstellarmind

        exactly WHAT* i did

  • Anonymous

My money is still on the Galaxy S2. I’ve had it with moto and will not spend anymore on their products with locked boot loaders. The sub-par display compared to others out there is also a turn off.

  • Amenemhat1

I wonder what that swirl logo in the top right corner of the back of the phone is?

its so hard to say goodbye to yesterdayyyyy…… lol im gone mr moto and im starting to feel played by uncle google.  u cant get flag ship phone w/  vanilla and a kb anymore.  and as much as im great full for for cm7 its kinda laggy and after playing with nexus s 4g(the two i told my buddies to get) it aint the same.  gb on the nexus is like butta lol. and im not dissing cm7 or their work they got me off the bench and in the game but i understand why ppl dont root its not always a simple task. i just dont understand why uncle googs is not standing up for the pure google experience on more devices.

  • J Dub

  • RW-1

Let’s sum it up in one word:

    Onwards ….

  • Hurfdurf

Locked bootloader, no camera button, and PenTile. I was expecting the first (and don’t really care), but the latter two? Come on, Motorola. Why’d you have to ruin an otherwise obvious upgrade for me from the D2G? 🙁

    • Anonymous

Seriously, why is moto dropping the camera button. It makes no sense to me. Especially when the volume rocker is still there.

  • Introduce != release. Accurate reporting, Tim.

    • Sorry to disappoint. I misread the press release.

  • James_Ever

So can we expect the physical keyboard to be the same for the Droid3 here in the US. With the blue and white letter accents? I hope so as I like the blue on the qwerty keyboard personally for aesthetic reasons. Is this the exact device we saw in the photos the other day in the prior post about the Milestone3?

  • Trophynuts

    awesome sauce

  • Zero

It droid3 for USA not america, every single person who lives in the america continet is an american.

  • This will be a nice phone just not mine

  • Any word on LTE? I might look at this if it had LTE since there is not a real Droid with LTE. Also if it has a unlocked boot with the 4G done and done for me.

    • So far, everything points to “no”.

      • If so really Big Red WT*!!!!! You are taking a brand and hamstring it. With no LTE or for the “one” that does low ram “for new phone” and no dual-core. Why are you killing the Droid brand?

        • Anonymous

I would imagine best practices for their industry  is not to update every product with the latest tech for a multitude of reasons.  So this was to be expected, especially if you remember the previous new radio band/tech rollouts like 3G and previous.
Think about the problem Moto is having with Tegra 2 and LTE radio.  Imagine if they now had 3 devices on the market that all were buggy and or sucked because their software wasn’t up to par.  Or the alternative if they had to push their whole droid line to Q3 because of the problems they are having and not just the Bionic, heads would have rolled at Moto.

          • I do not know it seems to me that Moto is pulling a flashback to the last time they had a hit phone. They then sat on their hands afterwards till they were pushed in to the wonderful OG Droid. I think that Moto is sitting on their hands again. They have got a problem with 4G. You need to stop and look and ok where is their 4G line up. Oh wait they do not have one. Also if you need proof look at the Xoom. Where is its 4G oh yeah they need to push that back. Till when….. Oh they are going to get back to us on that. Moto get off your butts.

          • Anonymous

I agree Moto looks like they are going to drop the ball based on the Bionic redo and Xoom delays.  However I think them not having multiple LTE phones already is expected as it is new and they need to learn their lessons on their first phone like HTC and Samsung are doing now.  I doubt either of them will have another LTE device any time soon, I think we’ll have to wait until at least the holidays for the next round.

  • hopefully moto has decided to be less fucktarded and hasn’t thrown Blur on this or locked it up…

    • If it is unlocked then I am sure that CM7 will pick it right away. So who cares about blur, but for the love of everything holy unlock it Moto.

      • Tesseract 3

Agreed. If the bootloader is unlocked and devs can have free reign with it I don’t care if it COMES with blur, the devs will get rid of that eye sore quickly enough.

      • Tesseract 3

Let Motorola differentiate their product for the non techie masses, I understand why that’s important from a business standpoint. Just unlock the bootloader so us geeks can put what we want on the device we buy with our money. Methinks Moto STILL doesn’t understand the concept of ownership any better than Apple.

    • Anonymous

It has Blur.  Watch the tutorial videos that have been online for a couple weeks or check out the Chinese review pictures of it.

  • IseWise

Im going to try to be optimist.

Motorola said that devices being released in the later parts of ’11 would be unlocked right? So one would think that this device would also be unlockable, either by software release or *fingers crossed* unlocked out of the box.

  • nessa

hope the D3 is coming before the 7th, hoping its out in the next week or 2. need it before 4th of july

  • SleekDX

Looks really good, but locked bootloader is a no go… Ill keep waiting for a possible “Bionic” with maybe an unlocked bootloader. No hereto rush now that we (DX owners) have CM7.

  • Has locked written all over it, a shame

  • Anonymous

I fell in love with android on the OG Droid but sadly none of these sequels will come close to rekindling that love. Why? BLUR.

    • Anonymous

That’s why I went to my OG Droid to the ThunderBolt, I don’t root my phones and I’ve wanted HTC Sense for so long, I love it.

    • Ĵono Reĝo

The locked bootloaders are what got me. Oh well, Samsung’s really been impressing me lately, so I don’t feel too much of a loss. And there’s always HTC!

      • they are retroactively unlocking all bootloaders later this year

        • Anonymous

          Keep thinkin that buddy.

        • J Dub

They’ll also keep blaming the carriers.

    • Pentile screen was the big killer for me, not to mention Blur and locked bootloader have turned me off of Motorola.  My OGDroid still being nursed along, but I want something before the unlimited data is gone. It won’t be this one…

      • Adam Ridley

OMG.  Everybody just shutup about the pentile screen including Droid-Life.  Even in their original review/explanation of that screen they say it’s not like it’s bad it just has some things that can be critiqued.  Yet, now they mention it with every phone as if it’s phone cancer.

        • Anonymous

You know whats funny…lots of ppl loved the Amoled screens last year on Galaxy S phones….with Pentile.

Now all of a sudden Pentile is the Black Plague…

        • adam

have you even seen it in real life…its sooo bad

          • Anonymous

Yea its sooo bad everybody that got a DX2 returned it…..or did they?

          • Anonymous

I had a DX2 and returned it (not because I didn’t like it, but because the day I bought it the pics and specs for the Bionic leaked) but I can say that the pentile screen was not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.  More importantly, unlike most other screen types like AMOLED, the display was extremely bright – so bright it could be viewed clearly and easily in direct sunlight.  So there is a trade-off but for many people it’s worth it.

          • Anonymous

            Thanks for the input.

Exactly…just like it was trade offs last year with Amoled screens with Pentile.

        • Anonymous

What’s great is if you look at Engadget’s review of the Evo 3D it mentions how poor HTC’s screen is compared to the Droid X2’s.

          • Anonymous

Thats strange…Engadget said the X2 has the best qHD screen they’ve seen so far in that Evo 3D review…Anandtech said the EVO 3D and Sensation doesnt look like it has Pentile…

Based on those 2 examples….ppl….see the phones in person before deciding you dont like the screen.

      • Anonymous

I know nobody really knows for sure but if you currently have an unlimited data plan (droid 2 global) wouldn’t that guarantee you will get unlimited 4g if you get a 4g phone after the tiered plans are in effect. Isnt data considered data whether it’s 3g or 4g?

        • Anonymous

Depends if they change to different prices for 3g/4g

    • Rob Meyer

Blur is crap, but launcherpro pwns blur. Why not just use that? On a side note, D3….pass… bring on that bionic moto…but leave the locked bootloader on the kitchen table.

      • Because even with an alternate launcher, Blur crapware is running in the background, wasting system resources.  It needs to be removed entirely.

        • Anonymous

CyanogenMod does a great job with that…

          So does Apex…

          So does Liberty GB…

There are “Blurless” ROMs that are easy to install. No worries. There will be for these phones too, even if the bootloader is locked.

          • CyanogenMod *just* got onto a bootloader locked device less than a week ago, after more than a year of trying…there are no assurances in locked bootloader territory.

          • Anonymous

All I am saying is it’s easier to improve the software on your phone than the hardware in it.

          • Jcorf

yeah, but with Verizon now charging full price if warranty is broken I don’t want to root the thing, I can’t afford to.   So, that’s why I’m just going to use launcherpro.

        • Anonymous

Shut up, stop whining about the old blur, these are not coming with that version.

          • AndroFan

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but “new Blur” or whatever shitty name it will end up having sucks just as much as “old Blur”.  Blur is a shitty resource hog no matter what it’s named.  Motorola should make it disable-able for people who actually like managing their resources…or at least make it not baked into the OS so that it can be easily removed.

    • Anonymous

512mb ram is what kills it for me

  • SprottheDestroyer

so gorgeous! that phone is mine when its out in america!

    • Nope

How many people will make this mistake its ‘gorgeous’…dont choose anything on looks alone.

  • Anonymous

    Damn, 1080p?

    • Rear camera, yes. HDMI out, yes. Main screen, no.

      • Anonymous

I hope you know that even if it were the world highest resolution screen, at that size you wouldn’t be able to even tell the difference between 720p and 1080. I doubt even 480p would look much different.

        • I disagree. I see pixelation in the Apple retina display without having to try to. 20/15 vision can sometimes be a curse. 😛

          • Wow

          • Anonymous

20/15 vision doesn’t mean you can see more detail up close. Unless you mean you notice pixelation on it from 20 feet away.

          • Anonymous

            Sure you can little buddy.

      • Still locked bootloader? You betchya. Goodbye motorola, gonna go get the Droid Charge I think.

        • droid charge…lol

          • Someone came up the other day showing me their charge and i have the thunderbolt. He quickly said i wish i would have got that phone lol.

  • looks pretty, hope this means they’ll update my D2 now

  • I like that, now why does that commie country get it before us

    • Woh woh woh, we gotta be more P.C. sir 🙂

      • Rizzidy

        Are they not communist?

        • Ĵono Reĝo

Eh they try to be, but they fail really hard at it and are more technically just a totalitarian socialist state to be precise.

          • Rizzidy

So calling them “commies” is actually a compliment?

          • Ĵono Reĝo

In a strange way, yes :p

          • Chris

I was afraid this conversation would go to use a bunch of pre-disposed cliches about communism, but thankfully you described China perfectly as a totalitarian socialist state. It’s funny how America keeps looking at China as some god-awful nation, but they nearly OWN the U.S. financially, economically, and educationally. Thanks for being precise.

        • Amenemhat1

Given the fact that USA is China’s biggest borrower, that would make China a more capitalist country than the USA. The interest is hefty! Someone want to thank Milton Friedman or Henry Kissinger?

          • Anonymous

China owns the U.S. so why shouldn’t they get it first.

    • They may not. Read the whole article.

“Availability: The Motorola XT883 will be available from authorized Motorola resellers and China Telecom’s stores across China on the 3rd quarter of 2011. “

    • XMasterMoronX

We refer to commies as reds but what about Big Red?
