Video: Sony Xperia PLAY Quick Hands-on

The Sony Xperia PLAY aka the Playstation Phone is now available from Verizon for $199 on contract.  It includes a gamepad, 4″ screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and probably most importantly, runs stock Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).  This phone has been leaked time and time again and there are little surprises left, but we still want to give it the full DL experience.  We’re starting with a quick hands-on…

Oh, Droid-life….how i love this site just as much as I do for it’s
    elitism :)

I got one…still have my Droid charge and I have to say my Xperia Play
is really working great, it’s a great phone and a lot of comments I’ve
read are mainly from those whining about Galaxy S 2 variants or waiting
for the Droid Bionic aka People who really haven’t tried the phone.

My verizon store nearby said they had sold quite a bit of the Xperia Play
as well as the Droid X2 today

They lost me at “locked bootloader”.

    could you fidget anymore..

Nice review, but why didn’t you play any games?

  • Anonymous

If I wanted the xperia play, I would buy the ngp… quad core… :P

The PSP Go is a great form factor. I love mine. They should have stuck with that and just added Android/LTE to it. Then they could have actually called it the PSP Phone and it would have helped marketing.

The phone just looks so gimmicky. I can’t do anything but hate it

  • Memphis1967

what I’ve been wondering is how the playstation games actually work.  Does this phone just emulate them, the same way every other phone can do, just with an added gamepad? or does it play the games natively like a PSP? The PSP was only 333 mhz, but because the games played natively, it was able to produce PS2 quality graphics (roughly).  is that applied here?

    • Maniko (Meister_Li)

There are no Playstation suite games as of now. However, it seems like it should be easy to re-compile PS2/PSP games to the Arm architecture and have them run on the Play or other Android phones, as they architecture isn’t all that different (PS2 on PC is another Story, as that’s completely different). however, that’s just speculation. No idea how it’ll actually work. As of now, PSOne is just an emulator – a very good one, tho.

The psx4droid app runs the games a *little* slow on 1GHz Droid X. That’s homebrew emulation, though. Sony may have better emulation in this phone because I doubt there’s any hardware-specific PSX emulation going on. If this runs the standard PSX games cleanly, I’m going to say it’s going to take every bit of juice the phone has in order to do it. That’s also going to kill the battery pretty quick.

In Canada our Xperia Plays come with Crash Bandicoot (ps1 game)

I can tell you it runs flawlessly. I also tried to emulate GT1 using FPSE and it also works quite well.

Sure Verizon will give you a stock phone…after they load it up with bloatware and lock it down too.

  • Adam Whalls

It is not totally stock Gingerbread, as you can see the notification bar is changed a bit as the 3G and battery skin is changed, also is the app drawer as you showed.

I have this phone for quite some time now (It’s out in Europe for about two months already) and I really like it. There are some points to complain about, but the performance and gaming experience are both absolutely excellent, despite not having completely stock Android over here.

    Is the bootloader unlocked?

    • Anonymous

      No.

      • b00sted4fun

bootloader site says they are working on it tho…

    • Adam Whalls

He said not on the CDMA version which is the one he has on Verizon.

Gimme the Xperia PLAY 2 with the exact same form factor (maybe a sturdier hinge) plus stock ice cream sandwich, 1Gb of RAM, a dual-core processor (or better), a top-of-the-line GPU, and unlockable. That would be my ideal next phone.

    • Anonymous

But then you’ll post the exact same thing but wanting the Xperia Play 3~!

      • calculatorwatch

No haha, cause I can’t hold on to my OG droid for that long

If I ever get this phone it would be to use a SNES emulator

i think the volume rocket isn’t placed that badly. consider when your gaming and you want to increase the volume, you move your finger a little over from the trigger and you can adjust the volume. at least that’s how i was doing it.

Looks really cheap, like something I’d get out of a happy meal, or in a cereal box.

When you have a chance it would also be nice to see a benchmark compared to the Thunderbolt, let’s see how fast stock is over Sense.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

ummm the T-Bolt has 2.3, or just the rooted one…I dont see any phone running 2.2 being better than a phone running 2.3 stock out of the box

      My xperia play (canadian) gets

      Quadrant : 1667
      Neocore: 57.4 FPS
      Nenmark: 43 FPS
      SmartBench (productivity): 1407
      SmartBench (Games): 1396
      Linpack: 37.4

Each one was run at least 3 times and the result were around the ones I pointed above.

      • Anonymous

Ouch >.< My Inc gets about 2k Quadrant and 44 LinPack. I haven't tried the others.

        • Anonymous

I measured these as soon as I got it out of the box I did it a couple times recently but nothing has been that much higher. It uses the same processor that is in the thunderbolt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1332240301 Dan Graziano

It would be nice if it was connected to the PSN so people wouldn’t need to re-buy games…then again it would be on the PSN network which has been terrible lately.

    • Tehforgeezewinrar

but if you connect to the playstation network all your data will get stolen.  Don’t buy this phone anyway it doesn’t have teh forgeeze

Just because you want 4G on you next phone doesn’t mean that everyone does. 4G is a feature, just like a front facing camera. Not everyone wants it. It’s ok if you don’t want this because of that, but to tell someone else not to get it is ridiculous. Sorry if I sound like a troller

        • Droidman101

I have 4g in my area…and I don’t care about it one bit.
3G is perfectly fine speed-wise and doesn’t massacre battery life. If I wanted to have 4g speeds ill use wifi.
          So I agree.

“A lot of people think 4 inches is perfect”….heh so he thinks…or hopes :-) jk kellex

    • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

thats all my wfie asks for every night….well maybe 6 inches, but I tell her my 4 is 6

      I like a “5 inch phonetablet” personally.

  • http://twitter.com/baedert baedert

Out of curiosity, how many phones/tablets do you have now?

  • Anonymous

I originally thought this was really gimmicky, but it doesn’t seem like it’s all that bad.

    • Tehforgeezewinrar

      no forgeeze=not worth it

  • http://twitter.com/ajkowal Allen Kowal

So it only plays like older PS1 games?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1332240301 Dan Graziano

      Emulation man :)
