ADW EX Updated with Infinite Looping, New Screen Transitions, and Experimental Honeycomb Support

Seems like so long ago that we received an update to ADW EX, but I think you’ll be very pleased after seeing the goodies that Ander has packed into this latest verison.

First off, he completely re-did the app drawers to improve memory usage and to make them more responsive.  He has definitely succeeded as the fluidity of the drawers was instantly noticeable.  He brought over “true” homescreen looping from ADW Launcher 2, reconfigured the theme management screen, added 3 new screen transitions, some cool zooming effects, drawer swiping between catalogs, and probably most importantly, started getting the app ready for Honeycomb.

I would like to express my thanks to you just for bailing me out of this particular predicament. Just after exploring throughout the internet and finding basics which were not productive, I assumed my life was done. Living minus the solutions to the difficulties you’ve sorted out through your write-up is a serious case, as well as the ones which could have badly affected my career if I had not discovered your site. Your actual expertise and kindness in touching every item was invaluable. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I had not discovered such a solution like this. I can at this moment relish my future. Thanks very much for your expert and sensible guide. I won’t think twice to recommend the blog to anybody who ought to have guidance about this subject.

SPB Shell 3d is alot better even tho it has very little customization. its only good if your phone is powerful enough to handle the amazing graphics. like my thunderbolt.

  • WEBWHE

I switched to ADW EX ever since Launcher Pro Plus almost killed my phone due to Fede’s implementation of an expiration date on the app. I and hundreds others had no access to our homescreens until we got a notification that allowed us to open up the market and uninstalled LPP… I bought ADW Ex soon after and never looked back.

  • Roberto Taylor

The new update creates a 1″ border on the screen now on the sides when in landscape mode, and on the top & bottom when in portrait mode. This is quite annoying and I hope he releases a fix for this soon.

It looks really good on my Xoom.

Whatever you do, don’t reboot! All my widgets are saying “problem loading widget”.

laaaate. GO Launcher been had these features for months now

    • Anonymous

and launcherpro has used it since it came out. i don’t get why people are so gaga over ADW, hasn’t produced anything original and/or noteworthy in months.

      • Larry

ADW had many of these features and is adding new ones, i.e. 3 new screen transitions. Launcher Pro added some of them after ADW EX, not the other way around. The only thing that LP had before was home screen looping. With ADW you can also apply who themes from various themers on the market, and mix and match these by icons, main dock, hidden dock. I like both, but I prefer ADW Ex because I just don’t use any of LPPs widgets. The only widgets I use on my phone are Smooth Calendar, Fancy Widget Pro, Power Control Widget, and Scrollable News Widget. I also only use 3 screens and use folders to keep my home screen clean and organized.

ADW does it better. Its coded better and more efficient.

I might give ADW another try. I used it for a week when it came preinstalled with a ROM I was trying, but eventually ended up back on LPP. ADW seems nice and I don’t even use Fede’s widgets.

was using sense, moved over to LPP, now trying this.

I love changing up launchers to change the overhaul look of my phone.

  • Greg

This might be the only launcher I’d bother installing on my Thunderbolt. I’ve been using SENSE UI since March with no issues.

  • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

I don’t understand why people would run this on a tablet…I prefer my honeycomb launcher than a phone launcher

    • John

This launcher is about 5 times faster than stock especially when loaded with widgets.

  • Anonymous

From someone who first began using ADW when the Droid X released, and than moved on to LP and eventually LPP – is this worth transitioning over to?

I always enjoyed the responsiveness of ADW when I had it running.

    • Greg

I havent used Launcherpro since last summer. Mainly because YES..the widgets are nice… but ADW just is nicer all around. Whenever I see the “which launcher is better”… people only mention LPP with th widgets being the first or second reason.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

themes, transitions, 3d app drawer, yes Widgets, custom docks and icons, the reason people love lpp is because it has a lot of features and Widgets, and customization

        • Greg

Okay… So like I said before.. Outside of widgets.. what is it that LPP can do that ADWEx can’t? Don’t worry…I’ll wait.

          • tjhrulz

I would say it is fluidity, other than that they are almost the same, Also while ADW doesn’t have widgets its theming is far superior. I use LPP the most but I end up going back and forth between it and ADW.

          • Anonymous

I agree I’m not exactly saying lpp is better but overall its just more sophisticated and easy to use than adw. Adw has alot of useful features but it lacks organization , I think adw is more for the hacker types whole lpp is more for the average Joe.

        • tanknspank

All those things you listed, ADW does them better. Widgets? The market holds hundreds of them. Many of which are very good widgets too. I always say that a launcher should not lose points for widgets. The community had been spoiled by Fede’s LauncherPro Plus and its widgets, which are great in themselves. It’s nice that Fede took it upon himself to create a set of widgets to go with his launcher, but it really shouldn’t be seen as the standard. The market has a great search function which can easily find widgets.

          • Greg

Exactly what I said in the original statement. But of course people dont know because they bought LPP and refused to try others.

          • Angelrod111

ADW hesitates too much on screen transitions, try flicking screens back and forth rapidly, ADW eventually stutters and hesitates, LPP is like melted butter!!

          • Angelrod111

Anyone ever notice LPP is also the Launcher Kellex always has running on his DX!?

          • tanknspank

Because kellex using LPP makes it that much better and everyone else should use it too! No. Just no.

My D1 has never been such a powerful phone. Even more so when I tried to use screen transitions with either LPP or ADW EX. Neither are fluid. Now, on my brothers incredible, the screen transitions with EX work just fine when I’ve used his phone, so I can’t really agree with the screen transitions being better with LPP. And ADW EX even gives you more options too.

          • Anonymous

ADW may have more options, but it’s become so damn clunky because of them. and in every possible way, it’s far uglier than LPP. LP/LPP is smoother, more responsive, and just looks nicer to boot. For some reason, Ander insists on using that hideous (and I mean HIDEOUS!) app launcher icon, and many of the features such as the trash icon for widgets and the contextual menus for launcher items are so hastily implemented. And most of the “more options” given in ADW are fairly useless anyway, such as color schemes of different things, size options, speed, etc. I have yet to see a useful or even necessary option given in ADW that LP doesn’t have.

          • tanknspank

You are the exact type of person that are the laughing stock of twitter, the market comments, and irc channels. An app icon? One that you never see right? How about the trash can that is hastily implemented? Done is such a way that you can drag and drop icons on and off the dock without having to go through a hundred and one menus. Those different options for color schemes? The exact things that allows you to change the look in ways other launchers can’t. Size and speeds. both things that allow you to customize the launcher to YOUR liking. Something that you seem to fail to grasp. These options are far from clunky and ugly. The edit screen, for both the screens themselves and each individual icon or widget. App drawer catalogs. Full launcher themes, not just your precious widgets. Multiple app drawer options. Thanks for the laugh and something to rant about.

          • Gunther

Inquizitor, I don’t get your fanboism. Both launchers are good, and are a matter of preference. It would be one thing if LPP was superior, but that just isn’t the case. It’s good, but ADW does some things better, like transitions, the 4D app drawer, and speed. Comparing ADW, free, to LPP is also not fair since one is free and the other is paid. To be fair, you have to compare LPP with ADW Ex, and there they are almost identical. LPP does have widgets, which is great for those that use them. I’ve never really felt comfortable with all the permissions that LPP asks for off the bat, even on the free version. At least ADW limits them to stuff that I use, and if you want further functionality, you can also install ADW notifier, but the dev leaves that up to you. In any case, if acting like an ass makes you feel good, more power to you.

          • Anonymous

If ADW is ugly to you, that’s because YOU made it ugly. You have the ability to change the way ANYTHING looks with ADW.

          • Anonymous

You’re either using underpowered hardware, or you need to adjust your settings. Either way, it’s an extremely minor point…find something better to do than rapidly flicking through your homescreens.

          • Larry

I think you haven’t used ADW EX in a long time, if at all, otherwise you’d know your comment is totally wrong.

      • Angelrod111

I own both LPP and ADW EX and although I loved all the custom options ADW offered, LPP just felt smoother and more responsive with the screen transitions, that’s what kept me on LPP. Options are cool…but I need a launcher that can keep up with my OCD screen swypes.

  • Greg

Finally. It only took five months. Now.. lets see if Fede & LauncherPro can actually keep his promise on this rewrite he’s been doing since Thanksgiving…smfh.

    • Mrpicolas

Not to be rude but do you realize what rewriting an entire app consists of?? It involves trial and error a lot of testing every line of code written from scratch to get an idea of just changing the messaging card widget theme check out Fedes skinning support thread

      • Greg

Thats something you could say if this was January. The fact he said he was almost done in December, then said he’d release in January, then went silent, then came back with a mediocre update. I’m not bashing Fede at all, what I am doing though, is saying he could’ve let people know…

      • tanknspank

But should you really be throwing that card when he’s been “working” on this for over half a year?

        • Greg

          EXACTLY! @ TankNSpank

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Emaw-Kennedy/504157652 Michael Emaw Kennedy

Any screenshots of it working on honeycomb? or does that not actually work

    • Anonymous

Works perfectly on Honeycomb, no fc’s.

      • Sesawyer3127

why is all the icon on half the side of the screen?

        • Lt Splash

That’s the theming screen. It’s where you go to change the theme for the icons, main dock and hidden dock.

          • Sesawyer3127

oh ok cause i loaded it and when i hit home it has all the icons as if it were a phone sized screen?
