Gingerbread for the DROID X Arrives, Reminds us of the DROID BIONIC

Our buddies over at MyDroidWorld got a hold of something that should excite all of the DROID X readers in the world.  Who’s ready for Gingerbread (Android 2.3) with the brand new version of Blur that we showed you all at CES?  I know, I know, you all hate MotoBlur.  But try your hardest to at least attempt to trust me when I say that the new version that was featured on the DROID BIONIC, was actually not bad.  It no longer looks like it was made for toddlers, has some really nice new shortcuts within apps/menus, and will likely be a strong competitor with HTC’s Sense for best skin.

We’ve dropped our BIONIC video walk-through below to give you some live action of the new Blur, but be sure to follow that up with the gallery directly after to see actual Gingerbread DX shots.  And now we’ll all attempt to wait patiently for MDW to release a build to rooted users.

when will the official droid x gingerbread be released? any ideas?

  • http://www.facebook.com/patrick.crumpler Patrick Crumpler

Hopefully this is Motorolas response to the iphone coming soon. Quicker and better updates. I know it will keep my eyes from looking if it happens. Will see.

  • Anonymous

could they have made a more annoying watermark?

  • http://www.borderinvasionpics.com FlatFoot

This isn’t OTA Gingerbread. It’s a leaked early version, and definitely subject to potentially massive change. Which means about 3 more months before we’ll see the final OTA update for those who don’t root, rape, pillage and plunder their phones.

    • Anonymous

Though there are frequently last minute modifications to the bootloader and modem firmwares, but contrary to popular rhetoric this is not so Verizon can screw us all in some maniacal scheme.

Truth be told they do these tweaks to ensure that each user’s phone will work correctly. A final “sync” if you will. You obviously know little about rooting or “raping” as you call it, so leave the technical talk to people that are helping build the community, not lemmings slandering those who know what they’re talking about.

I have family who work for Verizon at management levels so tell me something I haven’t heard.

  • Jodyh223

I don’t have it yet on my Droid X from Verizon. Any clue when I will get it?

    • Jake

thats a good question i would like to know as well

  • Thomasking

I wish gingerbread will come out for d2 soon

  • Jawshua

So how do they get the new update so early? Because I checked and I surely don’t have it yet? It’s always a tease to hear about people getting it early, not fun.

  • Jawshua

So is the update out now for us DROIDX users, or is just a leak on some people’s devices? I guess I’ll go and check my About page, but I have a suspicion it won’t be there. Especially with how long I had to wait to get Froyo, man that took forever!

  • Scott in MA

As noted elsewhere, I do not see where this is actually available to my Droid X. Did you forget a link or some directions? The sense was that this is real.

  • Alvinm 77

And the white theme/menus are a no go for me. Still kinda siked tho.

    • MikeC

      It’s psyched ;)

  • Alvinm 77

Never was a fan of blur. I run a stock ROM on my Droid X. I’ll give the new Blur a chance if I dont get the Thunderbolt. Im more exited for stock 2.3 ROMS for the Droid X after this is released.

  • Chris

kellex not sure why the title on this didn’t make it known this is for a small sect of rooted users. I’ve come to rely on droid life for reliable news on android and this article disappointed me. Most users are not rooted and so this solution will not be useful to us. If you could please clarify in future when updates are official ones vs. rooted in title that would be much appreciated.

    • Jake

the article is really just a progress report on ginger bread. it’s not an article that only applies to rooted users.

  • Mr. Joe

The version of blur on the X and D2 is great. It’s the closest thing to a stock look that’s out now. I like it more then sense.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=797475274 Nadeem Najib Kizi

My DX is rooted right now, running Liberty, if I want to install Gingerbread 2.3 OTA Update when it comes out, how would I do it?? I know you have to unroot, but do you just go to z4root and press unroot? update then root again? what about the rom, root apps?? does they go away by it self? someone please explain it to me.

    • somethingwired7

just backup everything with Titanium backup, .sbf the phone to stock, install the ota, and reroot with z4 to reinstall all of your apps

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=797475274 Nadeem Najib Kizi

        is there an alternative way?
If not, what’s the point of backing it up if you sbf the phone back to stock? I have MyBackup Pro. I have never used Titanium Backup.

I own a Droid X and am looking forward to this update. But it is also one of the reasons why i’m jumping the android ship into WP7 in july when i’m due for an upgrade. These updates take too damn long, google gets a new version out and we are stuck waiting a few months to get it, and even then there is no guarantee that the phone will be upgraded… Tired of these mind games.

    • Jake

      go cry some more

    • Jake

Lol, and your solution is WP7?? That sure makes no sense. At least Google updates their OS.

    • Anonymous

Take a look at how long Microsoft has been promising an update to WP7 to add copy/paste yet there’s still no release date. I’m afraid that boat is no better.

  • Jake

Looks like a weird theme. I dont see why they wouldnt go with a cool keyboard like on the Nexus S. Either way i want it NOW!!

  • DroidXWins

I’m confused, is this just a ROM or is this legit leaked software??

    • Anonymous

I’m 99% certain it will be released as a ROM for rooted devices only. At least that’s what I gathered from P3Droid’s Twitter posts about this.

  • Anonymous

Oh yea baby some Droid X love. Great stuff to wake up too! Knew you wouldn’t let us X owners down!

  • Bizarospeak

I’m confused… when you say arives for droid x and it’s not availible for me to up grade to what do you mean! When do we get this?

  • DannyJedi

when will it be able to be force pulled?

    • David

Now take this chalk and repeat all of this on the blackboard as a punishment!

  • http://www.facebook.com/borgey401 Andrew Borges

bleh Blur still sucks in my opinion. only way blur will be good is if it has an option where we can choose to disable it. other then that it’s not cool at all. sorry kellex in no way is this even close to sense ui and i’ve played with 2.3 blur builds way before this. they will never be as good as vanilla android or sense ui. Moto just needs to admit they can’t make a good skin and leave vanilla on the damn phone. leave the customizing up to cyanogen

  • tehshift

Damn… I read the title hoping there was a ROM released. Nice to see screenshots, but I’ve lost all hope on receiving this on droid x/2 before it is time to upgrade to a new phone.

  • BHDave10

CM7 rocks! Check out the nightlies. I’m already running gingerbread on my original Droid and its is SMOOTH!

    • Anonymous

Liquid Gingerbread v1.0 is even better than CM7.

And GPA15 is better than both.

I want this phone …finally getting the hell off AT&T.

    • Droidftw

      wait for the atrix!

      • http://justinpaine.com xxdesmus

AT&T would still be the problem. AT&T blows here in NYC.

        • AntDogs

          att is horrible in NYC

          • Anonymous

AT&T blows everywhere. And the Atrix?? Seriously? Google catches flak cause they want to keep Honeycomb closed to the Taiwanese Kirf army from hell for a few months, and nobody seems to mention AT&T doesn’t even ALLOW side loading of apps.

If that’s not the man sticking it to ya I don’t know what is.

  • XSiNx 26

so WHEN is it coming out?

    • Jake

thats what i would like to know to

  • droidxer

The only way this version of blur would not 100% suck is if it gave us the option to simply turn it off…..Come on Motorola, if you think your customers like it so much let us turn it off and then see how many people actually use it!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=649257134 John Hance

Hope this works out sooner rather than later. I like my Apex ROM a LOT better than stock, but I really hope GB clears up some of the freezing issues I have. Just want to say a quick thanks to all the guys working on this project. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

  • Anonymous

    Cant wait for Gingerblur!

  • Tojiro

First off: Yay for actually getting Gingerbread! Since Motorola is the soul source for any OS upgrades (due to bootloader madness), it’s good to see they’re still planning on delivering.

There’s something here that’s really pissing me off, though! (You know, aside from the eye-bleedingly bad dialer theme.) One of the improvements that Gingerbread made was to add a “Manage Apps” shortcut to the home screen options menu. This was done specifically to ensure that users not intimately familiar with the phone had a obvious and easy way to see what was running and be able to stop rouge apps. It’s a simple thing, but I was very happy to hear it. (You can see the native menu layout at http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/android-gingerbread/11584.html)

…and Motorola then decides that no one REALLY wants to manage their apps. They’d much rather switch between profiles instead. GAH! >_< Seriously, Motorola?!? You're willing to actually discard OS features just so you can show off your skin? That's not a happy thing by any stretch of the imagination.

    • Anonymous

You can install the gingerbread launcher apk from the market it has the manage apps option.

  • Anonymous

Cant wait for Droid Incredible’s turn.

  • Anonymous

Definitely not fake knowing the track record of these guys. I would guess that it’s an early build of GB for the DX and could be buggy.

  • Princesation

Off topic : Does anyone ever get push notifications from the facebook app ? The only person I know who gets it is my gf who has the droid pro . I have the OG Droid and i jus get friend invites , IMs , or messages . No status comments or anything . is it cause im rooted ?

    • Chad

No it isn’t because you’re rooted. I have a DX and the push notifications from the fb app are very erratic. Sometimes they work and sometimes not. I’ve had a Droid branded phone for the last year and that app has always been full of bugs and probably always will be because they get no support from facebook.

    • Waknatious

That app is terrrrrrrible. I stopped using it. Mobile web facebook is way better. Ditch it.

What do you mean “no Droid 1 love?” I’m running Gingerbread on my OG Droid right now. And except for camcorder not working, this thing is 100% stable.

  • Larry

How come the green icons are not seen on pictures 5 and 6? All the others have the green battery, green 3G, and green wifi icons, but these two have greyed out ones? Fake, maybe?

    • Anonymous

With Gingerbread, Wifi, 3G, and signal strength icons change colors based on whether the phone has a connection to Google’s servers. When you first turn on the phone, switch between Wifi and 3G, or are in a poor reception area, those icons will turn white. Once that connection is reestablished, they’ll turn green again.

    • Tojiro

No, They grayed out bars simply means there’s less signal. Not a fake.

patiently i’m dying for it NOW!

    • http://www.facebook.com/drew.h.wegand Drew Harrison Wegand

i literally just posted a thread on DX Forums asking where our gingerbread roms are?

  • Anonymous

Wow, they couldn’t do just ONE shot of the home screen?

  • Anonymous

Hopefully some Droid2 (not global) love as well?

    • Agacom24

i agree! i have a d2….was the update being pushed out ? or is this DX a rooted version? anyone know? official version?

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately, according to the guy who first leaked the ROM (P3Droid), the Droid 2 is “dead” to motorola. What that means I don’t know, but it doesn’t look good.

      • Agacom24

idk if its “dead” its just as powerful at the Dx, it has identical software on the inside and same processor speed im pretty sure….im almost 100% positive gingerbread will be released to the D2

        • Anonymous

I hope man, I’ve got an X, 2, and 2Global (I know, phone geek), and I would love for the 2 to get gingerbread. I’m just looking at it from what I’ve heard. You can check out P3Droid’s post where he calls the 2 dead here: http://twitter.com/#!/P3Droid
          I hope I’m reading it wrong…

“But try your hardest to at least attempt to trust me when I say that the new version that was featured on the DROID BIONIC, was actually not bad”

Kellex are you trying to smooth over Moto Blur on us?? lol, I know Moto has cleaned it up a little but, let’s not get suckered in to thier OBIE WAN KINOBE ” These are not the Droids Your’re Looking For” Jedi mind trick lol.

    • Anonymous

I know! Blur is bad news, but I’ve got to at least give them a little props for making it 100% suck. :)

      • Anonymous

Maybe Droid Life should have some Devs come out with thier own skin, that
totally rocks, and sell that to Moto :) Hmmmm I see dollar $$$ signs lol

        • EC8CH

Google’s got a great one… maybe Moto should give that one a try, plus it’s free!

    NICE! Can’t wait!

  • Anonymous

when is it officially coming out? i’m sure we’ll have a rooted version soon :)

    • Anonymous

We have no idea. When this happens, we assume it’s in testing and still could be months out.

      • Anonymous

That’s true, we are probably a ways out from a stable version at this point, huh.

        • IzzyDLizzy

A long ways out at that. This build is one of the first and there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to it. And from what I’ve heard it can not be rooted yet, there are menus with white on white text and so forth. To further add I believe the folks over at MDW have developmental devices and even if they do have a file it will do no one any good. consumer units work different and do NOT use the same flash files as dev units. So folks need not get any hopes up at this point in my opinion.

      • DannyJedi

        Then why even announce it?
That is what I find so silly of google.
“New OS is out…… But you don’t get it for who knows how long.”
I would like it much better if we didn’t get anything, then one day, BAM!
        New OS.

  • Keithsmnr

ugh please change the white theme to a dark theme.

    • digsoreos

Yeah, they change the notification bar from white to black, while changing the Settings menu screens from black to white. The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.

Here’s a thought… Just make everything gray. Lol
