Android 2.3 Makes Video Appearance in Cantonese Voice Search Demo

Google HK (Hong Kong?) posted a video over a week ago now that essentially gives us the first real glimpse as to what Gingerbread (Android 2.3) will look like.  The purpose of the video is to show off voice search in Cantonese, but you’ll see right away that device isn’t just running your average version of Android.  We’ve grabbed a few stills from the video which show off market listings, market app pages with 3 tabs, the launcher and as you see up top, the home screen.

So we definitely have green highlights on everything plus a black notification bar, but the rest looks really familiar.  Of course, we all know that appearance isn’t everything and that Google will more than likely have some extra special features packed into this new build such as video chatting and music streaming.  Can’t wait to see it.

Video and gallery after the break.

Video action: (Google removed original video. Pocket Now reuploaded.)

  • Oh nice, thanks for share!

  • Sboman32

all these complaints… really??? think about where the OS is now compared to a year ago. This is obviously some new eye candy with major performance gains. I take this over froyo anyday on my DX, Just Sayin' 🙂

    • QPHALO

Yeh really, I just went from an OGDroid to a DroidX and maybe its just mine but this X is WAY slower than my Droid1. I thought it was supposed to be bigger and better?

  • okland272012

i think andoid 2.2 actually looks more polished than this, the color kind of makes it look sloppy for some reason
all i wish we could take from this is the black notification bar
    why green??

  • Mission214

Just root it, overclock it, theme it, and love it. Apex, rubix, r2 remix are just a few of the options.

  • Brian

So, is the Cantonese Google Search available now? Or is it rolling out along with Ginger?

  • The original video was pulled…here's a new copy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxToOTjmviw&feature=player_embedded

    • TheDrizzle

Errbody 'like' this bad boy up to the top. Thanks AndroFan!

  • i hate the new theme. its so ugly it looked 1000x better before. and it would look fine if they wouldnt have made everything green. the only thing i like is the square launcher dock and buttons and the lock screen, everything else looks horribly ugly.

android should just have a feature to allow developers to make there own custom themes (with out rooting) in the form of apks that we could download and install ourselves. something like whats in the new HTC sense.

  • the video was removed before i could even get a chance to watch it

  • the video is gone =(

  • CheeseLover

video is gone. please tell me you grabbed it from youtube and can host it yourself.

  • Higher_Ground

    • whats even the point of this comment

      • Higher_Ground

and what is the point of your comment?

I decided I didn't like my comment and removed it…

So it is confirmed, Gingerbread will definitely not be a huge visual change. So our hopes are on big fixes and other little features. Which is fine, my top wants for Gingerbread are hardware acceleration, bug fixes, and small features (ad hoc Wi-Fi support, better Exchange support, continued modularization of Android.

  • eddieonofre

hey kellexdo u have any friend who speak or knowcantonesa or mandarin or whatever idiom is that one

we should have a translation of the video or at least of the new thing that shows that android, the three tabs?? what are those for?? etc etc etc

comeone kellexyou are the man make some moves and translate them

  • Towelie420

Wait what was up with the i*hone stuff at the beginning?

  • supermiah

I am going to guess that HoneyComb will be the “big” UI changes. Since the 2.3 tag is on Gingerbread I think we will have the features in this one. Remember 1.6 to 2.0(big UI change) and then 2.1 to 2.2(big feature change). UI changes will make a jump in the first number the version.
    Just my opinion

  • Michael_NM

I “cant” tell you how much I've been waiting for Cantonese voice search! 🙂

    • Bigrob60

Oh I can. Maybe I can finally get my Chinese takeout order right along w/ Google translator. Thanks Google HK 🙂

  • lilbigboi

what is gingerbread supposed to do. all i see is that they added colors to the icons.

    • EC8CH

gingerbread is good for making houses and little men with gumdrop buttons 😛

    • kellex

Like I said, appearance isn't everything.

      • Guessa

Aparrently its not much to google. They should have bought TAT instead of RIM, becuase whoever is working on androids GUI isnt succeeding.

        • JT

I think you're mistaking Google's lack of regulating for lack of effort. Google's taken a back-seat approach thus far and allowed the developers, manufacturer's, and users to control the fate of the android GUI and that's still working IMO (ie, Roms, Themes, and Launchers). Like you, I would like to see a little more guidance from Google since they have the talent and know-how. But if what we're not seeing in this video is hardware acceleration, gmail voip calling, gmail music streaming, etc, I'll be very impressed with 2.3.

        • shutty. just shutty.

      • The video is down. Any ideas?

  • tjpeco

Color me wholly unimpressed. This took more than 6 months to come up with!?

    • EC8CH

Apparently “wholly unimpressed” is a shade of green.

      • JP

Well, to be fair, the top bar is now black which makes it look a lot more “integrated.” I think that is a good design choice that a lot of custom ROMs have been doing for a long time now. That being said, I was hoping for more visual polish…

        • EC8CH

What Google should do is allow Theming natively in Android unrooted, just like how the Chrome Browser can be themed. That would play well in their Open and customizable vs Closed and authoritarian argument with *pple, plus it would be awesome for the masses of unrooted users to experience the joy of theming.

        • FortitudineVincimus

“that a lot of custom ROMs have been doing for a long time now”

          ding, ding

not exactly sure (1) what I am suppose to see that is so awesome about 2.3 and (2) why I should be excited

      • K.G. Roman

If that's the case, I'm unimpressed too. I'd take Sense, hell, even BLUR over this.

      • IMHO the green looks tacky and the rectangle launcher background is ugly.

  • JT

Nice. Looks like hardware acceleration to me.
