Google Maps Updated to Version 4.6.0

Google Maps received a nice update today which includes enhancements to Place pages and Google Latitude, but also allows you to filter search results.  While nothing incredibly major, these are the polishings we like to see on a regular basis.  (Wow that sounded dirty.)

Place page reviews
Now, you’ll see that Place pages on Android Maps share the same new design for displaying reviews as used by Place pages on your computer. You can see:

  • “Reviews from around the web” for highlighting sites that have high-quality reviews about the place.
  • “Reviews from Google users” for reviews posted directly to Google Maps by other users

Filter search results
Of course, you’ll first need to narrow down which Place page reviews to check out. In addition to distance and ratings, you can also filter results for some searches by:

  • Open now
  • Neighborhood
  • Related searches

Google Latitude real-time updating
In Latitude, you can also choose an experimental “Real-time updating” option from an individual Latitude friend’s profile page to help meet up with them by temporarily seeing faster location updates (friends must have Maps 4.6 and Android 2.2+).

The market on my set of phones is in full-on spazz-out mode and won’t download anything.  Let me know if you can get anything to download, and enjoy it!

Cheers Nathan!

Got the upgrade. Maps Lattitude is now crap.

  • Higher_Ground

I wish you could open KML files in google maps or google earth for android. I read you could upload a custom map online but not from the phone itself.

  • Kelly

    Just finally installed 🙂

  • Disgustingly Smooth

I just wish navagation would give you more than one route option. I hate taking the freeway sometimes

  • Kelly

can't get any market downloads to work 🙁

    • Kelly

Looks like the whole Market is down, I can't download anything.

  • Urugami

I updated about 12 things this morning, Maps included. After I saw this, I was hoping I'd lucked out and got the Maps 4.6.0 before the overload, but nope, running 4.5.1 on a Droid w/ Sapphire 1.1.1. No hurry; I'll wait a few days.

  • Appears to be working again everyone!

    • No, dice on getting it to work here for me.

  • Apparently this update isn't for everybody cause everytime I try it says download paused and then download unsuccessful.

  • joe1138

No joy for updating anything from the marketplace here.

  • Don't mean to be the millionth parrot but im getting 'download paused' and 'download unsuccessful'.

  • Mr. Joshua

I like the open now feature. That seems like it will be really useful.

  • The350zWolf

Market is not working…denial of service attack???

  • Chris

    • 75% of the android phones on 2.2

    • with automatic update enabled for google maps

    • which is a 5 meg download

    • overloading the server and reattempting repeatedly

    Google DDOS’d themselves

    • The350zWolf

Yep! you hit the nail on the head!

  • mjsplicer78

Likewise having Market issues. All downloads say unsuccessful. Droid X running RubiX 1.0

  • Can't download anything right now, says Download Failed or Download Paused

  • Jonathan3579

    Uhh, I have a G2 and I can't download anything. >:[

  • AznEngr

Funny, I had four things wanting to update: Google Maps, Foursquare, Dolphin HD, and SkyDroid. Only Skydroid updated so far.

  • FortitudineVincimus

I am still happy with v4.2.0

  • EC8CH

After reading this, I want a steak as much as I want a Google Maps update

  • rals

    It download finally

  • Yes it appears that the Google Market is having problems. I can't download anything…..

    • bravoleader2

It's working for me. Just downloaded the maps update. Droid Incredible running SkyRaider

  • r0landct

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Ruth's Chris, think I found my weekend plans.

  • I am unable to download it. Keeps telling me unsuccessful or pausing. ARG!!! Crazy thing is…the update for NewsRob is doing the same thing. Wonder if it is a glitch in the Market.

  • No luck downloading here. HTC Droid Incredible running Skyraider 3.3. Odd.

    • bravoleader2

      Skyraider is fun

  • when will navigation escape from beta?

  • mathees

too bad it wont download for me…

  • patton

Yea, I can't download…. I thought there was something wrong with my phone.

    Droid X 2.2

  • Kaufkin

Dolphin, Titanium backup and Maps updating simultaniously? Gee.. .wonder why even Big G might be having server issues… 😉

  • karl

If you hate the always visible search bar they added star the issue here:

    • Ryan

      I actually like it.

    • Lukaszsw

I already did! My droids screen is big but not big enough to add some useless bars in landscape!

  • Mr.Steve

My Droid 2 isn't downloading either.

  • Maps on the Android still fails to properly show locations by lat/long. It works on all other devices, Google Maps online, and Google Earth…but on Maps for Android, it fails, leaving you anywhere from a few hundred feet to a half mile off. 🙁

    • Tex

Google uses lat/long in decimal format, try converting to Degree, Min, Sec and see if that works better for you.

      • Hi Tex, I’ve tried that, maps simply does not natively show the pinpoint coordinates and instead seems to use a “nearest address”. See my post about it here http://geekr.posterous.com/android-maps-latlong-fail

I now use either C:Geo or GeoBeagle, both are accurate.

        • Tex

Nice blog, I guess I’ve never used the lat/long to try and pinpoint anything that close. I’m a surveyor and have access to better GPS equipment when I need to pinpoint anything 🙂

          • Thanks. Agreed, a phone’s first duty is not as a GPS, but the DX is pretty darn good at it, just wish the update frequency was a bit better, and the lat/long issue can be overcome with other apps.

  • i require polishings on a regular basis

  • villian1998

I really wish they would break out the Places & Latitude out of Maps. I would rather have my Maps be the respectable 3.5 MB than the 8.?? something for these apps that I don't use. Thanks.
    Yours Truly,
Owner of a D1 that doesn't have alot of internal memory

  • Andrew Hewitt

Google maps should add a geocaching feature

    • See my comment above (or below depending on your sort). It can't show lat/long properly and is useless for geocaching, but check out c:geo, it corrects that problem.

  • Shawn

I've been having the download pause problem with new dolphin browser download too!

  • Charlie

Me, too. Attempts download from the Market, then fails.

  • rals

Anyone noticing that downloads are pausing?

    • TheRealBeesley

Yes, based on what I’m seeing on Twitter, its happening worldwide.

    • Michael_NM

I think VZ has paused the download until they can figure out how to charge us $10/month for this. 😛

      • Anonymous

LOL no $hit…I can see them doing that

      • Josh

If they start doing that crap, I will find the closest VZW tower and chop it down with an axe!! I’m just kidding, but I may take my $25,000/month verizon wireless business account somewhere else.

      • i swear if they do that! ILL GET SOOOOO MAAAAADD!!!!! GET PUFFED UP AND WALK TO THE VZW STORE UP THE STREET FROM ME AND…………………………………………………. cry like a baby and roll around on the floor until they take off the charge.

  • amosk

Downloaded fine for me. Here's a link to try http://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.maps

    • rals

Yeah no luck, a few people on Android Central are noticing the same problem.
