The Tato Custom ROM Manifest!

WELL! We had a sweeeet idea floating around and here we are today. With tons of time to fill waiting to find Kellex and for that darn Froyo Update on the D-Inc, I have decided to start a manifest of *almost* ALL custom ROM’s. This is my way of making droid-*life* easy on all you.

I know there are screen shots of mostly all of them, but there is never full write ups from the people who really use them. I think it would be great to get real user opinions out there for people to read and also see. Sometimes forums are just TOO jumbled to find what you’re looking for. 🙂

So I am taking comments below about what YOU (the droid-lifers) want to see! What type of reviews do you want? Check lists of features, “smoothness”, lag, aesthetics? You tell me, and I’ll make it happen….as always! The possibilities are pretty much endless.

-Tim-o-tato and everyone here at Droid-Life

Thanks everyone for the great ideas! Droid-Lifers are the best!

This sounds like a good idea. When most new ROMs are released there always seems to be a small bug or too. Wifi doesn't work, Gmail force closing, little things like that. Usually when you go to the forum thread to try and keep up, see if things get sorted out, the thread has grown so large it would take an hour to read. Would be nice to have some have a easier way to see if problems were fixed. My thoughts.

  • Fawzi94

    battery life!!!!

  • Chris Nimon

screengrabs so we can see what they all look like. Jrummys screengrabs are very good but not all are there. Also like to see section with all the boot animations.

  • Chris Nimon

Id like to see a section on what has gone wrong and how that problem was fixed. Think that would help the noobs a lot.

  • Porschephile2k3

  • I think a relationship chart would make things much easier to understand. e.g., AOSP 2.2 is the root, CyanogenMod inherits from it (with its features as children objects), lots of other mods start with CyanogenMod (and their children additions, etc.), so on and so forth.

  • Jothen2002

Question… sorry new here. I am running saphire 1.0 ..I picked a theme at the time of download…can i change themes without totally re-installing the rom again..also can I “overlay” if that is the right word..on this ROm..if so how do i know which themes I can do that with…thx

    • EC8CH

Best to flash back to the stock theme of 1.0 (no need to wipe), then flash to the new theme (no need to wipe).

  • Corkis

It would be nice to have a 1-5 user rating system. Stability, responsiveness, and customization are my top choices for ratings.

  • Tyler_Durden

I would like to see a ROM comparison chart like they do when you rank smartphones or other similar items against each other. I.E. They all have Froyo, only one has adjustable Kernals or whatever, 3 of them all have this thing, while these others have this other thing. And then add success rates or other items like what Consumer Reports would do. Do some crash more than others? What are the real time speeds compared to stock? And make the Stock ROM the benchmark? I dunno, just some thoughts.

  • illagod

Yes please!!! The forums are too jumbled and they don’t always give you a clear picture of what your setting yourself up for. Great idea guys, lets go

  • dquicknc

Kellex is in secret meetings with the NFL Commish working on setting up a Droid Life Fantasy Football League for all us Droid Lifers!

Ok, but it sounds awesome though.

  • [email protected]

Just a suggestion. After the write-ups and reviews of the majors ROMs out there, could you make like a table with a summary of all the major pros/cons of each rom. Like a listing of all roms, and then say for instance a yes/no column of available features and ratings.

    for example:

    ROM/feature CM BB Simply Stunning

    360 Orientation yes no no
    Default theme stock Black BLue
    Base OS frf84 froyo2 gingerbread
    snappyness 5/10 9.5/10 7/10
    Stability 7/10 10/10 5/10
*info provided is not accurate, its just an example of the layout i’m trying to explain.

    • [email protected]

Just imagine there is appropriate table spacing in there. When I posted this, it automatically removed my formatted spacing. 🙁

  • InfernoX51

Perfect for me, since I just rooted today after much hesitation. The first ROM I installed was CyanogenMod6-RC3 earlier this morning, and now I have Simply Stunning 4.7 w/ ULOW 1ghz Kernel. Take it from me, its easy, and it’s awesome. Forget that FRG01b baloney that came via OTA!

  • Anonymous

I just wanted to let you know that you’ve come a long way from being just a vader tator. I like the things you and pic are bringin to the site. Then again, K’s come a long way from takin pics of his front lawn and video’s of putting on a droid case *sniffle*….you make me proud.

    • Thanks 🙂 That really means a lot! It feels so good to be able to give back to a community that has given me so much!

  • Kyle.Hunter

I have been dieing for someone to do this! Leave it to Droid-Life to be the ones to pull through. I hate having to read the endless forums of individuals flaming back and forth over which ROM is better. I dont want the individuals opinion, I want the opinion of the community as a whole.

I think it would be great if readers could state which ROM they are currently using and possibly have a rating system as well so we can get some statistical data. I dont know how easy this would be due to the fact that people are constantly switching ROMs but at the least it could be a poll for who has tried each ROM and how they would rate it overall or across the possible categories.

Anyways good stuff Tato! This is what I love about this site. You guys are always thinking exactly how us the readers are.

  • Anonymous

I know people love screen shots and probably list any known bugs so people know what to expect before they flash a new ROM. Great idea Tim.

  • Stennyck

I would love to see an article targeted towards people like me that really do not understand rooting, custom ROMs etc… I am sure most of your audience would be bored with this topic but there are a number of us that would love to know more about this topic at a very basic level. I find the whole rooting, overclocking, custom ROMs etc.. very interesting and I am sure there are a number of people wanting to know more about it. Anyone else in my boat on this.

    • M1ghtysauc3

Same here. I know zero on the subject.

    • You got it 🙂

    • Mosskingpin

Just go back and read all of the old posts. You will be an expert.

      • Garmiblis

“It’s Power is exceeeded only by it’e mystery…it’s mystery is only exceeded by it’s power”

All of the posts I’ve ever seen say “do steps a,b,c,d,f,r and you’re done…but you should really research this before doing it” and then they point to another article that has the same steps and says I should research it “here” and here is another copy of the same steps without any real information.

  • This is going to be a tough thing to do. Everyone has different tastes and needs. Also on that same note where everything is different; not all Droids are the same, well most are different. This means kernels and all that will vary from device to device. I myself can say with some confidence that I have tried pretty much every ROM that has came out for the past month or two. And each one I made sure that I stayed on it long enough so I can really get a feel for it.
What I’m fearing this will turn into is a spot where some ROMs will get tons of praise and others will be dogged. All the ROMs that are currently out are very very similar now-days there are just minor tweaks that each developer/team has implemented.
Rather than a “review” of the ROM, where its deemed ‘good’ or ‘bad’ I think that there should be a full list of its features with any notes about possible “redraws”, battery life, (use the same kernel on all ur ROMs, I do, and it workds great) and customization. Along with all of this screenshots are great when talking about themes because a lot of the times when you are on a forum searching for themes they dont have screenshots posted with it. Anyway, what I’m getting at is all these devs work hard and I dont think any of them would like their work to be posted on a site and dogged and compared side by side with other ROMs, they are constantly working to make them better.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing what happens.

  • Bpope3006

i would like to see more screen shots of custom roms tips and tricks of whats new and what these roms offer, the lastest apps which you already do a great job of …love ya webb site keep up the good work.

  • Kswallace87

Gotta Question, Well I woke up this morning n looked at my phone and there it is an update! So i go to download it now n it goes for lik mayb 30 seconds n then the triangle with a green android wit a (!) i had to pull the battery. Turned it on n nothing 2.1 update 1. Now yes i am rooted but wanted to be on 2.1 for the update so i can hand the droidness to the wife n take over the droid 2 era lol. But nothing, Is it bcuz i am rooted n its blocking the update to happen….??? WHERES KELLEX?!?

  • I would love a nice article about what it means to be a ROM.
like an article of keyWords that would help a user know what they are getting into.
OR! an interview of Cyanogen and how they came around to being the best!

  • Anonymous

    1. Plus and minuses over other roms
    2. Speed (Not sure how since quadrant is unreliable)
    3. Available themes
    4. Stock kernel and which kernel works best

  • Anonymous

I just got Simply Stunning 4.7 today. It is amazing. Fast, never seen any lag, looks great, and has so may fun stuff in it. Go check it out.

PS: If you want help tracking do all the ROMs and info (what build, screenshots, etc) I gladly help.

  • i need one with the wifis

but seriously i want to talk smoothness and speed, I’m using jrummy lithium which is very fast but ever since using the galaxy s theme its laggy. I cant give it up because it so good looking!

  • Anonymous

    While the cats away…. huh.

Great Idea Tim, I would like to see a topic on each ROM and let people just have at it with questions, comments, and what have you. In the topic subject have screenshots, standard features, special features(like litmod’s allinone script or SS script app) and what kernel is being used.

  • Anonymous

    What is a roms?

  • JohnnyD

Would this be a manifest of ROMs just for Motorola Droids, or all Droids? It would be nice to have it broken down among the different models (D1, DInc, DX, D2 … and even my lowly, lowly Eris, which has seen some very strong Froyo builds in recent days).

That said, the features I’d like to see rated are: Speed, Battery efficiency, Bugs, Features, OS version, Build no., Kernel version, Design, and Overall.

  • Anonymous

I’d like the one with the more geee beeez please

    • Anonymous

      And the WHY FIES

  • Yankindasouth

    How about:

    * How long you have been running the ROM.

    * Theme availablity / theme intergration (ie any issue after theme install)

That’s all I got for now … love the idea though!

  • Pictures
What makes the ROM different from stock

    • Anonymous

Roms r esentially custom systems were the creator either starts from the ground up and does it all i.e. from source, and the other type is when they take a system and tweek it to their liking. With in custom roms you can change your cpu speed ( the speed at which ur phone runs), edit the look of your phones system appearence, alows you to download certain apps that are “root only” like dropcap2 and wireless teather for root users, but I think the reason that most people have rooted their phones and installed custom roms is because they can then download the new 2.2(froyo) build, which has all kinds of new goodies like apps2sd which alows you to save apps to ur sd card instead of internal phone storage, also another thing that I really like about froyo (unknow if 2.1 does this been so long) but auto dl of any app that’s on ur phone from the market as soon as u enter in your google account, as well as auto updating of apps. I hope this helped you out a bit, the more you look into it and read up on it the easier everything gets. When this phone first came out it was awsome and I was trying to figure everything out that I could, and then you find out about rooting and your phone goes from the best to the bestest!

      • Yeah I understand all of that. What I never know is why should I pick Cyanogen over Bugless Beast or why it’s better then just rooted stock. A simple example of this is CyanogenMod let’s me change the colors of my notifications. BuglessBeast lets me pick custom scripts to run. It’s the stuff like that I want to know. The short answer is I want the ROM maker to “sell” me their ROM.

        • Anonymous

If you want it all check out the new chevy or the litium both have customizable themes as well as script managers

  • Mr. Chips

For those ROMs with themes available (like Sapphire) it would be nice to have screenshot sets for each theme.

Dude, if you pull this together it could be huge! People (like me) are seriously looking for a one-stop-shop to go to for a current and curated list of all the major ROMs with proper metadata around each one.

In addition to all the other excellent ideas I’ve seen in this comment-thread already, make sure you include a standard place for the links to the D/L and developer sites for each one and you are well on your way…

Oh, and one last thing: As long as we are doing ROMs, you might as well include a place for things like baseband updates as well. Some of us like to play around with those as well.

    • Brutal. All excellent! Thanks! 🙂

    • Mr. Chips

Sorry – one more thing just sprung to mind: You should denote “built from source” vs. “modded stock”.

    • Droidinmind

I Write DROIDLIFE.COM on Bathroom Walls!!! LOL! JK.

  • Anonymous

personally, i think some major things to include are:1. features over other roms2. speed tests (linpack, quadrant, etc.)3. launcher (stock, adw, LP, sense)4. AOSP or Cyanogen or leaked build5. this one would be for future development of the manifest: device (D1, D-inc, DX?, D2?)

    • Flyinion

Shouldn’t 4 be AOSP, Cyanogen, or leaked build?

      • Anonymous

yes it should. it magically changed. 😛

  • Darren B

Use Linpack to benchmark if Quadrant isn’t reliable anymore.

Also, known kernels it plays well with would be a nice touch.

  • Robpsmith69

    Speed & smoothness
What apps come with it I.e. does it have Facebook twitter amozonmp3. Or at least if you can remove
    OC kernels
    Battery use
Tools available (personally love the system tool that you can get for Lithium Mod)

    • Orion

Abso-freakin-lutely. Speed and smoothness, ftw. The only thing I’d add is stability. Those are the most important things, in my opinion. And, Tim, you are the man. I have been hoping for some expert advice on this as I never know which ROM to pick, and it’s all a bit daunting to me to just try them all. Can’t wait to see some Ultimate Droid v. BB v. SS matchups. 🙂

      • Oh, like a straight up custom ROM battles! That would be DOPE! 🙂

  • PyroHoltz

    Battery Life(tough I know)
    Free memory
    Revision frequency

  • Anonymous

I’d definitely like to see what version of the OS it’s based off of and the date it was released. Sometimes it gets confusing seeing a ton of numbers floating around and trying to remember what is what. I’d also like a list of possible themes under each ROM. Oh oh, and whether LauncherPro runs smoothly on it…having redraw problems right now with BB 0.4.

  • M1ghtysauc3

I have Kellex held hostage until I receive froyo ota for my Droid. Your move Verizon.

    • Anonymous

It is ok, Kellex Verizon will save you. Wait, it going to be another week… sorry now another month… well I guess sometime by the end of next year…

      It was nice knowing you.

    • *Tightens ropes on Kellex*
ooooooh can I keep him! I’ll feed him and walk him everyday!

      • M1ghtysauc3

Sure. But dont let your guard down. Not until our demands are met.

    • M1ghtysauc3

OK I just received froyo. At 4 am too. Hmmmm. Kellex has been released.

      • Garmiblis

Nooooooo, it was a ruse. The froyo didn’t get the Flash sprinkles. Hold on to the prisoner.

        • M1ghtysauc3

Go to 4shared.com and type adobe.apk in search bar.

  • Sput

I like this idea. I have two Droids. I use one for regular use and use the other one for testing kernels, ROMs, and themes. With these two phones and my friends Droid, I’ve come to realize that all Droids are not created equal. For example, on my regular phone, I have BB .4 with a P3 1.1Ghz Low Voltage kernel and it runs amazingly. I put the same combo on my test Droid phone and it locks up and reboots. My friend’s phone had the same issue. Anyone else come across the same thing?

    • Anonymous

Yes I just received a warranty replacement and the setup I had on my first droid wouldn’t boot…i agree all droids are not created equal lol…

      • Sput

        Strange stuff.

    • 100% agree. Silly things like RSD Lite not working on my Droid. I had to go through a whole mess with EZ Root.

  • Eric Whitaker

I feel that ease of install should be put on here also even it may seem a little unnecessary, but when it came to sapphire and ultimatedroid it took a very long time for me to get everything working properly so that could be a negative in some peoples eyes. Just a thought.

    • Tried to put saphirei 1.0 and my phone just kept looping on the boot animation

  • Kaufkin

not sure how to implement it, but “Stock w/ Root / Near stock / custom / very custom” and Noob friendly (Y/N)

  • menno mobile.

Please put if the froyo auto app restore is enabled. I was ticked when I downloaded simply stunning and had to reinstall all my apps. Why isn’t this standard?

    • It should be actually lol
Yes, that is a big gripe for me too. I’m on it 🙂

      • Anonymous

but with simply stunning, he tells you not to wipe… and if you have to, he has an app to backup all of your apps and restore them. just sayin.

  • Tom

Quadrant Score, Screen Shot, Smoothness, Hardware Requirements, Kernels

    • Due to quadrant scores being manipulated very easily, they aren’t very reliable anymore. :-/
I’ll see what I can do for you 🙂

      • Tom

They can be manipulated yes, but maybe an average quadrant score that takes out the outlyers? Or have a trustworthy source do the benchmarks.

  • BostonB

    Omg best idea ever

    • That’s pretty much what I was thinking 😉 lol

  • Seriously, Its like Timotato and Mrpicolas have taken over Droid-Life, What did you guys do to Kellex?? =P

    • Check in my basement…..whoops did I say that?!? lol NVM!

    • Anonymous

i kinda like it. hopefully it will add on to my droid-*life* experience!!!!!

  • batterie

Here are some helpful categories, can’t wait for this to be done
    Kernel Version:

    • Excellent. You and me are definitely sharing the same ideas 🙂

    • Anonymous

I’m with you, all the categories you listed sounds right on.. Only one thing, list ALL the roms, just because there was a pi$$ing fight in the rom world with Blackdroid, make sure you include his rom too. His roms are all his and have more goodies in them than any of the others.. I have tested all the big roms and none compare..

      • Droidinmind

Ultimate Droid 6.0 runs so SMOOTH on my Droid1!!! P3Droid 1100 kernel. LauncherPro Plus…. cool temps, NO FC”s, Fast!!!!! some Re-draws, but no deal killer! I would like to see all ROM’S included! I’ve tested them all also.

  • Anonymous

maybe timotato and mrpicolas and kellex are all the same person under different names…

    • Anonymous

HMMMMMM. I’ve never seen them all in the in the same place before. Well, I’ve never seen any of them before, but that’s beside the point

    • Anonymous

Split personality. That explains a lot.

    • tbaybe

i’ve seen 2 out of 3 at the same place.. 🙂

  • Chris G

I’d like to see Froyo on the D1 which was supposed to finish today. Still waiting.

Of course i’m rooting again once i prove unrooting worked.

    • Anonymous

I was at a VZW store today to get a new battery… um… bad news to the unrooted… the 2.2 update has been halted for a second time… the line at tech services was very long… apparently there is an issue in there, if your phone has a bad battery, it is starting the update, but not re-installing anything… NO OS at all.

The poor tech guy had reflashed 12 droids today alone.

  • fyi: our /aligncenterimage is not working 😉 lol
    I swear….

    • Anonymous

Tim any idea if asurion got more droids in yet? Mines freezing up sometimes. Wanted to see if I can get a free upgrade lol.

  • Mrpicolas

lol wheres kellex??? jk this is win for sure
