Once I saw a Samsung rep take the Galaxy Z Fold 8 out of their pocket during a media briefing this week, I could tell instantly that I wanted to have it. I messaged Kellen and told him that the leaked renders and photos didn’t do the device justice. It’s smaller and more compact then I had envisioned, and to me, it’s damn near perfect.
While I enjoyed my time with Galaxy Z Fold 7, I always felt that one-handed usage was always a tad bit difficult due to its height. It’s been like that for all past Z Fold iterations. Galaxy Z Fold 8, or Thicc Boy as I’ve come to call it, measures 4.87 inches tall. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra comes in at 6.23 inches tall. It’s a considerable difference when in hand. When folded, for me, Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the superior experience.
But what about when unfolded? Yeah, it’s actually much better when unfolded, too. The aspect ratio of 4:3 when unfolded is ideal for consuming YouTube videos or having a real tablet-like experience. And if you rotate the device, you have a completely usable 3:4 aspect ratio. In the words of KleenDroid: Amazing.
Also really improving the overall viewing experience of the main display is Samsung’s Titanium Flex components, which drastically improves (and by that I mean lessens) the visibility of the crease. It took 8 generations of foldables, but my dudes, we can finally insert the LeBron meme and feel pretty good about it.
On top of all of that, Samsung it utilizing a new anti reflective coating, which cuts down immensely on that glossy look past foldable phone displays have had. I haven’t been this excited to open a Fold since maybe the Galaxy Z Fold 2, so that has to tell you something.
Keep in mind, I’ve been using the device for roughly 4 hours in total. These are my initial impressions, but so far so good. Will have a full review coming soon.
