Oppo N1 Trailer Reveals Possible CyanogenMod Inc Partnership

Earlier this week, CyanogenMod announced it was incorporating. One of their announcement hints was that they were already partnered with a mystery hardware vendor to bring an official CM-powered phone to market. Earlier today, manufacturer Oppo tweeted about its new device, the Oppo N1, and provided a link to a trailer. This is pretty basic marketing, but the real surprise in the room was an appearance from Steve Kondik, the founder of CyanogenMod.

Wearing Google Glass, he made the announcement that he would be joining the Oppo team in Beijing for the phone’s unveiling. He goes to let on that there will be an exciting announcement during this time. The video’s description also offers a glimpse at what may be happening. Could we see a partnership between CM and Oppo?

Nothing has been confirmed at this time, but today’s reveal brings an Oppo + CyanogenMod partnership that much closer to reality. Would you be interested?

  • Dustin Casper

He looks like someone who just won the lottery. The “I don’t give a sh*t just stay tuned” attitude.

  • Why couldn’t they just steal Robert Downey Jr. from HTC instead?

  • anycube90

As I known, Faea F2s will be second CyanogenMod phone

  • Amorel

How about a 4.5-4.7 inch phone by OPPO with CM on it! That would kill!

    • Amorel

      Meant 4.7 inch screen.

      • CAL7

Agree! An advanced phone with the size of the Oppo Finder would be a huge winner.

  • Ian Smith

They have to release before the N5 or they’re going to lose a ton of potential sales.

  • Steve B

    If this isn’t confirmation, I don’t know what is…

  • Well, you guys said they CM wasn’t worried about making money… now we know it’s cause Oppo is bankrolling them (after the 7ml investment cash).

    • LarryLars

Oppo wasnt the one who bankrolled them.

      • I’m hypothesizing that Oppo will be bankrolling them in the future, after they’ve spent their initial investment cash.

  • InvaderDJ

Man does Google Glass look douchey in this situation. There is no reason for Kondik to be wearing it except to show he has one. Glassholery at its finest.

    • JMonkeYJ

i’m pretty sure he just wear his almost all the time. if i had glass, i probably would, too 🙂 what’s the point if you keep taking it off?

    • sk3litor

Or maybe he just has a personality and is messing around. Or maybe someone dared him to do it or one of many different reasons. Shouldn’t be so quick to judge my friend

    • balaams_ass

      Maybe teleprompting ?

  • Dustin Casper

When they do I’ll be sure to buy some stock :3

  • Blue Sun

Will be interesting to see if this device is delivered unlocked &/or rooted.

  • Guy Pierce

Sweet finally some competition for the major providers and OEMs.

  • OK, Oppo makes top-shelf Blu-Ray and DVD players, especially because they all support high-res audio formats like SACD and DVD-Audio. Oppo’s players embarrass other players that are twice their price.

That’s the problem. Oppo needs to know its role. Somehow, I don’t really think anyone wants an Oppo smartphone. And if Oppo thinks that Cyanogenmod is a big enough name in mobile that it could help move units, they’re delusional.

    • Rammstein

Oppo Find 5??? It has been getting some good reviews. Good hardware with an even better software update schedule. MKBHD really liked it.

      • I agree, that looks like a nice phone. That doesn’t dilute my point, though. Nice phones don’t always perform well commercially. Last time I checked, that phone hasn’t exactly lit the smartphone market on fire.

        • Gato Mafioso

They have a strong following of users if you go to their forums. Basically they rely on word of mouth since they aren’t tied to any carrier and don’t really market it. That’s why it hasn’t gone mainstream yet.

          • Then that makes it a perfect match for CyanogenMod.

    • Steve Ballmer

The delusional one here is you.

    • sk3litor

Oppo find 5 is one of the best Android phones to date. Do some research my good man.

      • I agree. It’s a great phone, but consumers couldn’t have cared less. That was my only point.

        • LarryLars

I have to agree, great hardware and great software but if you were to ask your buddies about either, its doubtful they would have a clue what you were talking about.

        • Sarge

Since most consumers don’t know it exists. Had Oppo put the money into marketing to really enter the US market then I’m sure they’d be more well known.

          • Possibly, but since that’s not what happened, we’ll never know, I guess. Of course, marketing doesn’t always guarantee a hit. Ask HTC.

        • Mike Hilal

Cause we really can’t get it. Especially on VZW

  • Jeremy Martin

This could be the start of good things to come. Oppo will provide the springboard but I hope eventually companies like Motorola get on board with CM as an option. Getting carriers to support it (looking at you Verizon) is another thing.

    • Jeremy Martin

If you plan to down vote at least explain why. How is getting other companies like Motorola involved bad? Or are you just upset that they went commercial?

  • Alexander Garcia

Okay Mister Kondik! You have my attention!

  • chris420o

Ima watch the video in 5 min so ill make my comment then…but id be very interested…but as everyone else pointed out verizon wont be getting it regardless so meh

  • Walter Partlo

This would get CM legitimate Gapps access.

  • Brian Menius

Oppo seemed like the only rational choice when the rumor of a CM partnership with a hardware manufacturer came around. I like the possibilities.

  • Teng Taing

another phone VZW wont be getting…….

    • chris420o

      lol this^

  • GawkerRedesignSucks

    2 truckloads of YES!!!

    • MannyLegacy

      I undoubtedly concur my friend!!!!

……Does anyone know yet if this will be available here in the US?

      • kaufkin

Sure! Just not on Verizon. 🙁

        • MannyLegacy

I’m on Vz right now myself. I’ve been thinking about jumping ship. This just might be the phone to give me that push

  • Nathaniel Otto

Would be awesome if it would be accepted on vzw, but i don’t see that. the idea is great though, i love CM as an OS. It is pretty much what keeps me clinging to my GNex at this point.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    Who’s Dave?

  • MichaelFranz

i think he was just showing off how he has google glass and we dont…

  • Pandalero

OPPO N1 has a 5.9 inch screen. Booo!

    • brkshr

What are the dimensions for the phone though? Those looked like the smallest bezels I’ve seen on a phone.

  • Tony Byatt

The second half of 2013 has been and is going to be an exciting time for the Android community…

  • oppo find CM? jizzzzz

  • Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth

If Steve wants to be the face of CM Inc. for future commercials he needs some practice.

    • meijin3

Practice wouldn’t be a bad idea but the ad wasn’t bad itself.

      • Joseph A. Yager

My thought exactly – cool idea for the ad – not the best actor in the world.

        • michael arazan

Maybe they can get Kripke from the TBBT, “Sirwee, Can you wecommend a westaraunt?”

    • Weber

      Thteven doethn’t need practithe.

  • aNYthing6

    That video is so awkward.

    • Beat me to it. That was really weird.

      • Mort

I’m looking forward to attending the OPPO event…

        …in Bejing.

        • i think i got it! he was speaking that way to prompt the translator! …. no? .. no? … ahh I tried.
