Google Intros $20 Nexus 4 Bumper Case Through Google Play

Well, if you planned on picking up a Nexus 4 tomorrow once they go on sale, why not pick up an official bumper case for it at the same time? Yes, I said bumper for a Nexus 4. Scary. Anyways, the bumper cases are running $20 and come in one color – black. You can expect them to go on sale the same time as the Nexus.

Cool, right?

Cheers everyone who sent this in!

  • BP

Don’t bumper cases just mean that the phone breaks easily?

  • mikeym0p

I love the look of the bumper I just have two concerns. 1, if it’s plastic, does it have rubber or foam on the inside to prevent it from scratching the phone. and 2. is it the same soft touch feeling as the bare nexus.

  • javier

whit many people buying bumpers, why not earn 19.50 for each one…

  • Gayer than Tim Cook on Saturday night.

  • Leeroy Waddermelon

Wonder how much they get paid for pushing this stuff.

  • juan

just want to point out the main difference between the iphone 4s and the nexus 4. I can get two nexus 4 for the price of a 4s. Also the specs are way better. Im not a big fan of a glass back but it should be fine with a screen protector.

  • Again, why all the overanalyzation on this? It’s a damn case!! Wow. I love the Apple conspiracies, but you guys are reaching HARD here. Grasping for straws. You ever stopped and thought, maybe Google just wants a piece of the accessory biz? It’s not like they’re free. And you know what? I bet they fit better than any 3rd party case maker bumper out now.

Enjoy your geeky otter box. I’ll continue to keep it clean and classy with my bumper 😉

Some of you are just silly….

  • On the bright side no you can not say there are no accessories for the device!

  • der_saeufer

Looks awesome, but $20 for a bumper? I’ll take my chances until a 3rd-party case hits the market. OtterBox, I’m looking at you. The sparkly back looks pretty but I’m a phone abuser, so I’ll cover it before I risk breaking it.

  • Droid Burgundy

    cool case.. HORRIBLE PRICE

  • nightscout13

Bumpers are the best type of case out there. When a phone falls, it usually falls on the corners. Whose phone has ever fallen dead center on the battery cover?

  • Tom Z

I say go without a case or screen protector. Phones are pretty durable today and they look so much nicer without a case or protection.

  • Tom Z

This should help with the signal issues caused by holding the phone the wrong way… Oh Wait that was the other phone operating system. 🙂

  • AJA0

Then this case would not protect damage via change or keys in my pocket. Only drops.

    • vitriolix

Who the hell puts their smartphone in their pocket with change and keys?

      • SkippyFlipjack

Me. And my MyTouch 4g has fared remarkably well with no case; only one significant scratch on the face and it’s really not that noticeable.

    • It’s the sand that scratches your screen, gorilla glass holds up fine to metal.

  • jcorf

Praying that I can get out of my Verizon contract without paying the ETF. Any ideas?

    • Guest

not happening man. they are the freaking devil. the most you’ll get is maybe a credit to keep you from cancelling. i’m just going to deal with it and pay off the remainder of it slowly

      • Get the credit then cancel, it at least pays some of the ETF.

  • NexusMan

What’s the point? It’s a phone with a glass back and front and they sell a “case” that only covers the one area of the phone that isn’t glass? Also, Mattias Duarte gave a whole speech about how the sides of the phone are designed around how you interact with the phone and hold the phone and the sides are designed to help prevent the phone from slipping from your hands and to brace the phone.

    • The bumper would protect the edges that are likely to hit something, normally if you drop your phone, the glass doesn’t hit the ground, it’s the corner or edge, the shock caused by this hit moves through the device to crack the screens, with a bumper that shock can be absorbed.

  • Any ideas when the Nexus 4 is going on sale in the US?

    • Jroc869, Cool story bro

probably 3 am est but I would check at midnight as well

      • Looks like I’m not getting one from the first batch. LOL

        • Jroc869, Cool story bro

lol well it still could be early tomorrow morning but Im still checking 12 and 3.

  • scott62185

Does anybody know what is the link to watch to order the Nexus 4 (or the bumpers, for that matter) when the time comes?

    • JoshGroff

Google play. When you log in on a PC scroll down and select devices.

  • You guys are idiots. I’ve used a bumper case for every phone I’ve had – which are all androids. It’s a case preference. I don’t rock stupid bulky cases. Google supplies one? What’s wrong with that? Nothing. I think it’s awesome….

    • They are charging $20 for it…check out the $20 case you can get for the N7.

  • UncleFan

I don’t get all the hate… what’s wrong with using a cheap but attractive bumper case, at least until you can get something a little nicer? Personally, I’m hoping there isn’t a long delay until Incipio comes out with a Feather case for the Nexus 4.

    • It’s $20 for a piece of rubber. The profit margin on this bumper is probably better than any of Apple’s margins. Look at the Nexus 7 case, that is worth $20, I was hoping for a reasonable price or something really nice, not a $20 bumper.

    • blee

how can u nonchalantly use that pic as ur avatar?? it crushed the hearts of millions in Korea..

  • tanknspank

Why isn’t anyone thinking about the wireless charging? With a case there would probably be to much between the phone and pad to work. If you want the wireless charging to work this is probably the only choice…

    Edit: spelling

    • blee

Thats a good point I guess.. personally I never use cases w/ my phones tho… on that note tho.. give us pricing and availability for the wireless charger google!!

    • Jroc869, Cool story bro

From what I have seen cases arent really going to bother the wireless charging much. I do like the idea of not having to hide such a beautiful phone. Screen protector on the front and back, bumper on the sides im set.

      • Diablo81588

There is no magnet. It just sits on the mat.

        • Jroc869, Cool story bro
          • Diablo81588

Hmm. I was actually referring to the lg Verizon mat that kellen was using. Didn’t know they made a custom charger for it. Looks cool though.

          • Jroc869, Cool story bro

ah gotcah. I heard that lg charger is a pain because when the phone is fully charged it has an alarm that goes off. Im not counting on this charging orb being ready for prime time anytime soon so Im probably going to scoop up an energizer charger.

  • Lyn Scott

Somebody knows if amazon will sell this phone eventually? From my country this is not available for purchase.. 🙁

    • Probably not, I’d try Ebay.

    • Droidzilla

Change your proxy server to US then use a shipping forwarding company to ship it.

    TPU cases. That is all.

    • Dean Rossano

Can’t wait to see what Cruzerlite whips up

      • KOBALT

I’m a HUGE fan of Diztronic TPU cases. However, my next device is the Note 2 and I spoke with a rep from Diz and they said there are no plans for a TPU case from them. Ended up ordering a FlexiShield from MobileFun.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Kellex…Tim…. I need a video of that widget lock screen… thanks.

  • Seriously. Nexus “4”, glass back, bumper case?

    • Dain Laguna

      i know…JUST like an iphone. /s

  • JabroniUNM

is the next Nexus gonna be the Nexus 4s?

    • JoshGroff

Yes, and it will be made by Samsung.

  • bigredandroid

    Lawsuit is eminent!

    • utilitybelt

Apple: We patented shiny backs and glass a long time ago.

  • i want this for my Galaxy Nexus…

  • saimin

Bumper case means the phone is too fragile for normal use.
Or they are trying to mask an antenna death grip problem.

  • Jesse Priest

This is all I’ve got to say about bumpers http://youtu.be/iUqv8iVLYLo

  • j__h

Bumper cases are a good idea.

90% of the protection with much less of the bulk.

    • Colin Zack

Yeah they really are, not sure why people are upset about them

    • JoshGroff

Bumper case + zagg protector on both glass surfaces = all you need. 🙂

Still, $20 for a bumper case, I think not.

    • Detonation

I’ve never used a bumper case, but is it that much less bulky? I would think it would add the same amount of width of slim case since it’s going around the outer edges still.

  • Dustin Wen

Any news on front and back screen protectors?

  • blee

um… first the glass back, now the bumper.. whats next? reception problems?

    • Mustang5Oh

Yeah I love Android but it’s clear that this is all a dumb ploy to copy from Apple ideas. What a shame. They have been doing great then they name it the Nexus 4, glass back and now bumpers? Yuck! Oh and to the moron giving negative rep on all our posts you are a fanboy just like Apple fanboys. Admit it to yourself that this is lame.

      • S2556

Yeah I hear Sony is copying apple and calling their next Playstation the Playstation 4, what will be next?

Oh and don’t get me started on how almost every sequel to a movie ever made has used the same apple esque numbering scheem (If you dont believe me go look!)

        • mbaldwin85

You. I like you. Funny guy

        • PS3G

        • Droidzilla

          Indiana Jones 3S?

    • Dain Laguna

cause the previous nexus didnt have any of those right?

      • blee

what? glass back?.. or bumper?.. or reception problems?.. did it have any of those?

        • utilitybelt

Since I’m currently using a galaxy nexus I can say it had none of those. I don’t understand all the reception complaints. Mine was perfectly when I first got it. The only issue was switching between 3G and 4G. That was fixed pretty quickly though.

          • Droidzilla

I wouldn’t say that the GNex has reception problems, but I think a lot of people are comparing it to the RAZR which has a second to none radio. Doesn’t make the GNex bad, but I think this may be where people are getting the stereotype from (that and Verizon’s still new LTE network, no doubt, but that’s every phone on Verizon LTE).

    • You are aware that all they did was make the glass back after Apple gave up on the idea. The bumper is there to keep the look of the phone while protecting it, not sure why they charge Apple prices for a bumper on this phone though.

  • burntcookie90

    This is eerily familiar…

  • Mustang5Oh

Yuck! Why must people copy things Apple does? It was dumb when Apple did it and it dumb now that Google is doing this. Bumpers are stupid!

    • Jarred Sutherland

Actually they aren’t dumb at all. As someone stated, its less bulk. Less bulk is good. Just because Apple used it doesn’t meant it’s stupid.

      • Mustang5Oh

Removed…some people are just as bad as the iSheep and most of you here are….so long DL.

    • Bill Mitchell

Google has two options; Make a case that looks like Apple’s and preserve the nice design on the back, or cover it with an okay looking case just so they aren’t compared to Apple. In other words, they’d have to hold themselves back because of petty reasoning.

    • Dain Laguna

why do you care about a case style you dont even like? buysomethingelse.com or…
