Developer Hackery Leads to 720p Video Recording on Nexus 7

For those looking to fully utilize that little front-facing camera on your Nexus 7, developers over at XDA released a flashable zip file to allow for 720p video recording. This is for users rooted and running a custom recovery. By editing a media_profiles.xml file, they have allowed for 480p and 720p HD recording. To install, once you download the zip file and place on the device’s storage, just boot into recovery and flash from there.

For downloads and instructions on installation, follow the via down below.

    Because they can.

Excuse my lack of technical knowledge, but how do mega pixels and 720p video relate? I thought the N7 only had a 1.X megapixel camera, so I’m wondering how it can capture high def video.

    • fixxmyhead

well im no expert but i do know it only takes 1mp to record in 720p and 3mp for 1080p. i know, i dont know how this recording works but thats what google tells me

      720p = 1280 x 720 = 921,600 🙂

  • Sweet, now if i want to record HD video with my Nexus 7 it will look like I’m holding up and showing the world my new tablet! “Hey look everybody, I didn’t buy an iPad!”

    • fixxmyhead

    • So is that better or wrose than taking pictures with the back facing camera on an iPad?

  • Southrncomfortjm

Let’s see a Kindle Fire 8.9 HD 4G LTE do that!

    • michael arazan

They said HD 32 times in the youtube video for the new hd kindle fire, but they did manage to say high definition once. Like repeating hd 32 times makes it more special.

A bit off subject but can anyone tell me the purpose of the files in the “LOST.DIR” folder in our phones? Thanks and sorry for the interruption.

    • mgamerz

It’s a linux feature for files that have write/read errors. Its not specific to android.

      • RoadsterHD1

Interesting, I have one folder in my internal SD and one folder in my EXT-SD. If i delete the one in my ext-SD will it be ok?. Thanks for your help much appreciated.

        • mgamerz

There typically isn’t anything useful there. They are created at the root of each partition. If you delete it, it will be recreated. It’s just how linux is. Much like hidden folders in Windows, except its not hidden as well. But yes it is safe to delete.

Thank you very much, your help is much appreciated…..

If the device is capable of doing this then why not just release the device with 720 recording already included. Do compaines hold stuff like this back for updates so it looks like they are always improving it?

    • C-Law

Probably bc its a front facing camera and if they advertised it everyone would complain that its an almost useless feature since the camera is on the front

      • ddevito

no it’s for bandwidth reasons for video conferencing

        • Wouldn’t the device (or rather video client) select the video profile that is best for video chat?

        • zepfloyd

Probably also because the base model is only 8GB, if you were going to record video you’d waste space in a hurry.

    • fixxmyhead

      makes u think huh

    • TheCheapGamer

Apple kept bluetooth disabled until an update came out.

  • kixofmyg0t

This is very similar to the 720p hack for the Xoom that’s been available forever. Nevertheless props to the devs for making it work on the N7!

  • JoshGroff

    Well, that’s pretty cool.

  • ddevito

.zip site is down – anyone has a reposted linky link?

  • haha.. those devs sure get bored.

  • T4rd

Now how are you suppose to see what you’re recording? =p

    • Just go for it! 😛

    • zepfloyd

You don’t like looking at yourself in High Definition??

      • All I have is standard definition mirrors…
