GOTO Lockscreen Has the Potential to be the Best Lockscreen Replacement

We were turned on to a new lockscreen replacement last night called GOTO LockScreen and damn are we impressed.  The actual rotary lock-wheel is polished, lets you jump right into your Gmail/dialer/messaging apps, and even displays a notification count on them.  You also get weather, time, battery level, alarm status, and the ability to set up a custom wallpaper.  And yes, this is for all users including those non-rooted folks in the wild.

The app doesn’t allow you add all of the extra sliders that say a WidgetLocker would, but the look is so much more appealing.  We’re hoping that the developer adds more options in the near future and then this app will be on our phones for a long time.

And the good news is that it’s on-sale for $1.49, so you might want to give it a quick look.

The GOTO Lockscreen product is garbage – don’t give this guy any more of your money. Hasn’t supported his product in over 9 months as it’s full of bugs and an entire community forum complaining about it. Not even an updated message about a POSSIBLE update. Ridiculous & horribly unprofessional to not support a paid product when people have the expectation of a fully-functioning application when they BUY it.

  • 3rdjones

Awesome app, but killing my battery.

  • Franktankerous

I downloaded this when you posted this, even after the honeymoon period I’m still loving this new lock app. I kind of wish I could have a password built in seamlessly, but I dont really have anything that secret on my phone

  • Hogasswildmc

If it truly replaced my lock screen I would use it. Two lock screens is stupid. Returned withing the also stupid 15 minute Google return policy.

  • Just Me

What a great lock screen replacement. And it has one feature that is the same reason I’m using GO Launcher EX: On your email icon on the lock screen, it shows the total unread count of all your gmail addresses, not just the default address.

  • Keeler

This is certainly a nice lockscreen imo. I’ve been using WidgetLocker for some time now. I bought this one and it seemed to work just fine for the first several hours, then I started to notice blips. Occasionally it’ll freeze, or it will unlock to a black screen and force close. I’ll keep it on my phone in hopes they release updates to improve performance, but for now it’s back to WidgetLocker.

  • FortitudineVincimus

I would try it, but the change to like a 15 minute trail period for pays apps means.. I’ll pass

prime example of where that change potentially cost a sale

  • Kytoga

I installed it yesterday after this “advertisement” and it’s clearly a battery drain! uninstalled

  • The Matrix

is less configurable, and the unlock bar is ugly.
for the same prize, love WidgetLocker much more

Just like widgetlocker, this is acting all funky and weird after 10 minutes of use. but now since i didnt uninstall it in 15 minutes i have to keep an app i wont use that i cant return. booooooo

widget locker is way better than this you can customize everything it looks nice tho

  • Keemyxo

I used this some months back, then it started to look annoying, Theres also an app called ‘Widget Locker’ which i love b/c u can use the HTC sense styled unlock screen, and add personal photos so the unlock screen and widgets. (I just have the OG droid) and it works great.

I personally like “Lockbot pro”. I like the stock (Froyo) slide, (mainly because of the option to silence phone) and it just works so much better than the stock. The stock one is just WAY to “cluncky”…

  • Lakerzz

I wish the home key byapass, and the volume and camera key bypass REALLY worked with these lockscreen replacements. I hate when they get hit by accident the screen turns on.

  • Mylock developer jake

the reality is that all apps providing lockscreen replacement are going to work quite poorly. they barely accomplish a baseline of lockscreen substitution. The reason for this is that google has failed to provide adequate development tools. I have documented the available methods for accomplishing the baseline, proof of concept lockscreen substitution and published code that illustrates the gaps present when attempting to serve as a total, all the time lockscreen replacement. Once I got the framework for always on lockscreen substitution running, and implemented widget host into that, it became apparent that it would not be viable for a polished, paid-worthy app due to the gaps in functionality. I inquired with the android team if there were any plans to fix the issues (basically to add support for replacement lockscreens to pass control back to the normal lockscreen or gain control over the going to sleep behavior of the device to allow the user to interact with the lockscreen without a short screen off timeout) and I was told that there were no current or future plans to implement anything. The purpose of the lockscreen superseding methods is solely to enable google apps such as the phone, alarm, and dock to have more robust functionality and they really don’t want end users to be able to customize anything about the lockscreen behavior, thus they are not planning to implement it in the SDK. So, I gave up without much further banging my head against the clunkiness of the widget capable lockscreen I had started. I see that these market entrants are more optimistic, but I am sure their review comments are plagued with complaints that are not resolvable due to the lack of support in the SDK.

    Looks promising, functions poorly. Uninstalled.

  • Dinofan01

holy crap that lock screen is ugly….

  • Anonymous

    Does this work with Gingerbread?

  • Rain_king46

Great app so far. seems fast. looks nicer than widget locker. wish it had most customization options. id rather have a straight slider ala i*hone than the rotary.

  • Momohime

GOTO works great! I have been using this android lockscreen app since it has been out and I have no problems with it at all! I love the shortcuts that lets me preview and saves me so much time!

  • wayfaast

Just found out that it also works with clutchpad so you can launch directly into any app that you set up there as well :)

  • Mike 6

I’ve used GOTO in the past but I have 2 major problems with it.
    1. The weather update frequency is, I believe, 3 hours and is NOT changeable. Too infrequent for up-to-date weather
    2. The email notification on the slider is for GMail only; an early version permitted K9 but current versions do not.
    3. Yes, it is somewhat of a battery hog

  • Baines05

I used it for several weeks and as long as you’re within 6ft of an outlet its a great app to have. It took off about 2 hours from my battery life and my help request was deleted when I asked about any improvements that could be made to improve the battery life.

  • Greg

The New Widgetlocker will be FULLY customizable, including columns & rows, as well as fully changable, skinable themes for your actual unlock abilities. You can create your own this go around. Also featured is the luxury of disabling the second swipe after the widgetlocker swipe unlock… Which is what everybody wanted originally. It’s on it’s last couple of beta tests before a release hopefully to round out the end of February.

    • Lakerzz

Will it be able to ACTUALLY keep the physical buttons on the DX, and the volume/ camera buttons from waking up the phone??? That really CHAPPS MY HIDE!! :P

  • DP

You mention the non-rooted users. Does that mean that most lockscreens or customizing programs like openhome don’t work on a phone unless it is rooted? What about Motorola phones where the bootloader is locked?

    • Anonymous

Locked bootloader does not mean anything when it comes to root access.

  • Anonymous

can you run a live wallpaper like the inspire??

  • DoItForLulz

Buggy app, has been for the 6+ months it’s been out.

  • Jhmurphy96

Like the app. Which clock widget is that in the photo?

    • Anonymous

most likely part of the lockscreen….

  • http://twitter.com/jjbobzin Jason Bobzin

If you have the pattern lock screen setup… try entering the wrong password… puts you back to the original lockscreen and then you can unlock without a password…

The newest Widgetlocker will have plenty of features… some I can’t speak on, but I’ll a few… colmns & rows, and FULLY customizable..

Been waiting for widgetlocker to update which seems like forever. Hopefully the wait is worth it.

  • Greg Abbate

Does not work with Droid X. Says it is an illegal copy and to download a legit one.

    /confused

    Got my refund.

  • Raven

Does not work properly with Droid 2 and PIN security required by Exchange. Stock Lock screen comes up 1st, and then Goto Lock. 2 lock screens is a fail.

    • http://twitter.com/batfandotcom Ben Rollier

D2G here. Having the exact same issue.

    • http://mariasama16.livejournal.com/ J Harrell

Unfortunately, that is a problem with all lockscreen apps that I’m aware of (widgetlocker has the issue too), and model phone doesn’t matter.

      • http://twitter.com/batfandotcom Ben Rollier

Actually not true. I still have my old Droid1, which is running stock 2.2 and it does not require the slide-lock like my Droid 2 Global. Which makes me think it has something to do with Motoblur.

    • Jonnyktyler

Yeah i have the same problem. I wish it would work though because this lock screen does seem super nice.

    • Anonymous

I like having the pattern lock for security reasons and I agree: 2 lockscreens = FAIL

      • Irish22022

widget locker works fine on my phone MOST of the time. Once in a while, I’ll get the stock lock for a second before it comes up. You should turn off homehelper, I find that messes things up, and if you’re rooted, use the root option.

    • Anonymous

    • Lakerzz

Maybe you can use “No Lock” from the market. That might help. It disables the stock lock screen. That’s what I use everytime I try out one of these lock screen replacements.

  • http://www.facebook.com/drose0 D.j. Rose

I just bought it, launched it and got an error saying I was using an illegal copy and that I need to uninstall it and buy it legitimately from the market…

  • http://twitter.com/batfandotcom Ben Rollier

Here’s the real question, can I get it to disable the slide-lock on my D2G? I bought WidgetLocker and now I have 2 slide locks :P

    • Lakerzz

Download No Lock from the market.

  • Djyosnow

Has potentential to be the best….lmao its obviousley not. A little wonky for me & I wanted trabsparent view & no clock….just the lock was slick. Meh

    • droidxuser

i’d like to slap your english teacher!

  • Unexpected62

I tried this app maybe 4 months ago… I wanted it to work and be cool so bad, but on my droid 1 it ate up too much ram and gave me re-draws in launcher pro. Now running cyanogen, my stock home screen does this and more with gestures. It doesn’t look as nice, but I program it to what I want it to do when I draw whatever, so there’s not a need for this.

  • viewthis66

i emailed you guys (along with countless other people probably) about this app a long time ago like the middle of last year if not further back and you are now just getting to it? slippin…

it eats up a lot of battery power. that’s the only reason i don’t use it anymore.

    • Devin Jones

      Lol xD

    • Anonymous

Rude! We try to catch all of the good ones, but some times they slip. :)

      • viewthis66

i’ll forgive you guys… this time… only because this IS the best source for all that is Droid :)

        keep up the good work.

    • mr.joe

They are. Back in Nov I sent a tip about 3D android phones coming out in Dec. Over in Japan. They never posted about it and went on to call LGs stuff the first 3D phones.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OOO7GVPXWATBC75FGMUTLHJJME SjB

yeah, it’s a battery hog and unstable as hell.

Haha all good bro. It happens im sure you get tons of tips/emails.

  • Greg

    you’re late…. but I disagree

    • Greg

It’s not really better than widgetlocker. I’m on the Beta team, and it’s gearing up for the release in a couple days or so.. and if THIS impresses you… Eh. Wait until you write your widgetlocker review..

      • Cmendezd

Its been months since the last update…..

        • Anonymous

Welcome to the world of Android were everything is just around the corner, by the end of the week and some time early next month. I feel like everyone puts out a hype date and then like 2 months later it finally comes out.

          • Anon

Does it go “click click click click cllllllllllllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick” for 8 seconds on my DInc when I unlock it? If not, then I’ll stick with WidgetLocker thank you very much.

      • Anonymous

WidgetLocker is just so damn ugly IMO. :(

        • http://twitter.com/bizdady Bizdady

Skin that mother! lol So many possibilities but still dont use. I hate the double lockscreen issue. I just themed my framework lockscreen instead.

          • Anonymous

I have been useing Widget locker for awhile now and never see the double lock screen issue i hear about. Guess i just got lucky but i do understand how that would be annoying lol.

          • http://twitter.com/bizdady Bizdady

Even with the root option I see it. Its only a split second but enough to annoy me.

          • Anonymous

Damn that sucks. Wonder what it could be??
