Download: FRG83 Froyo for Original DROID

Android 2.2.1 (FRG83) has been released as a ROM for the original Droid and you can start enjoying the goodness now!  The Nexus One saw FRG83 almost a month ago, but you had to expect that it would find the OG at some point right?  Download links and instructions after the break!

*You need to be rooted.  Instructions here.

*This is a rooted FRG83 ROM.

1.  Download your choice of FRG83 from above and drop it on your SD card.
2.  Boot your phone into recovery.  (Power + X)
3.  Scroll down to “nandroid” and select it.
4.  Choose “Backup” to make a full backup of your phone.

*You may want to perform a factory reset at this point as well.

5.  When that finishes, scroll down to “install zip from sdcard” and select it.
6.  Select “choose zip from sdcard.”
7.  Find the FRG83 file you downloaded from above and select it.
8.  The ROM will now load onto your device.
9.  When it finishes, choose “reboot system now” and enjoy!

Let us know if you run into any issues!  Feels good to have a new release for the D1 doesn’t it?

Full support can be found at My Droid World.

Stock rooted frg83. Fixes corporate exchange security issue. Used to get incessant notifications with 2.2 and battery seemed to be draining quickly (maybe as an effect of constantly refreshing permissions?). In any case the battery life is significantly improved (but may not be for those who did not have the corporate exchange issues). Also, launcher, pull down, etc are noticeably more responsive. Unfortunately, Wi-fi with WPA still cycles.

BTW, my D1 now says version 2.2.1, baseband C_01.43.01P, Kernel, Build FRG83. If you don't see FRG83, you haven't done something right.

My D1 is loaded down with junk so it was slow sometimes to update the graphics when going “Home”. This combination has improived its speed. However, it is still slow compared to my wife's stock D2. P3Droid is awesome.

Last week I nstallled FRG83 on my rooted Moto D1 over FRF84B with P3 LV 250-1000 kernel, I used SPR Recovery, made a backup but didn't wipe data or cache. The new version worked flawlessly but comes with an 800 MH kernel. So I made a new backup and then tried the P3 LV 250-1200 kernel. My D1 locked up and then went into the dreaded M loop. I used SPR Recovery to go back to the stock FRG83 version which was stable and then installed the same P3 LV 250-1000 Kernel that had worked before. My D1 likes this kernel and is very stable. I have found that everything else, included 90+ apps also work great. Thank you P3 for all your fine efforts.

Hey guys, need some help with installing an O.S. on the original Droid. I updated my software to 2.2, so I had to download and use RSD Lite to get back to 2.1

Then I used Easy Root to root my phone and downloaded ROM Manager Premium. I've tried downloading and installing Cyanogenmod (3 Times, 2 different versions) and Ultimate Droid. When the phone restarts, the Motorola symbol pops up, then the UD or Cynogenmod logo, and my phone seems to get stuck on a loop at this point just repeating the O.S. logo. I was told it could take up to 20-25 minutes so I've let it sit each time up to 30 minutes.

    Any suggestions on this one?

    • I've Read Multiple Times When Stuck In A “Boot Loop”, Wipe The Data And Cache. See If That Works.

  • misphit917

No real difference but battery life last a whole lot longer. Well that and the fact I cut facebook and twitter apps off….lol

  • Nick

ok, so there's now a C & D on the update?!? Anyone have any thoughts on where to get the file?

  • Ryan C

I got an 1138 in quadrant when i installed this. This is soo much better than my 2.1 when i was getting like 400s. :p http://imgur.com/vDImx.png

  • d1mj27

Hey I put this Tom but it says I am not rooted in setcpu and Tom manager

  • Chuck D.

When I re-booted to recovery my phone just hangs on the screen with the triangle with the “!” inside. Any thoughts?

    • Noneym

Press volume up and camera simultaneously.

  • Ryan C

can i install this coming from rooted 2.1 update1?

  • Ryan C

so DEODEXED or ODEXED? Whats the difference?

  • JohnPA2006

I wonder if this update will get rid of the dreaded.
on my Droid 1, with 2.2
I tried pattern lock, PIN lock, Password. no matter what I get that update or change security settings warning and my work email wont come through until I can get the warning to go away.
    Very annoying.

  • I've already noticed a difference. I uninstalled SetCPU.

    Benchmark is at 1047. http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u247/bcornea81/snap20101111_165904.png

Gallery loads up much faster. Battery life seems to be the same.

I've been having trouble with the home screen load ups ever since 2.2 got released. The issue is when I go from landscape to vertical or the other way. Takes an extra 6 seconds to load..sometimes even more. I would of the thought that the 2.2.1 update would of solved that issue. I might just wipe it clean and clear the cache and start from scratch. What do you guys think?

    • I use launcherpro and have turned off the homescreen rotation (Homescreen doesn't rotate but apps do). I have next to no lag whatsoever.

      • I should have mentioned that also. I downloaded the launcherpro app and its still the same issue. I don't understand it. I looked online for some solutions and I get next to nothing with results. As far as I know, quite a few people on the motorola forum have been bitching about it. I'm surprised droid life hasn't brought this issue up. If anybody has any solutions, pass them my way. Would installing the rom with a wipe and wipe cache in recovery mode be better? Haven't tried it yet.

Does this fix any of the major bugs in Froyo like:

    1) AAC+ streaming problems with pandora. ( and no the google patch did not completely solve the issues )

    2) broken interprise WiFi logon that used to work fine in 2.1….

Otherwise it would be a waste of my time to load it…..

    • Well we wouldn't want you to waste your precious time. Next time unless they fix the specific problems that you are having they should just not even post!

  • Me

just installed over bb0.5 without wipe, everything ok. Any themes for this one??

  • Mpena1419

Whats considered an origianl droid? Is it the one that verizon came out with first Eris. It would be nice if we can do some kinds of upgrades for it.

  • Youdoneyo69

Will this replace BBV0.5 or just overlap it?

  • Hey I tried it and it didn't work says it is bad.so it aborted. How did I go wrong?

  • Tacown

SS 4.9, UD 1.0.0 / 2.0.0, Lithium Mod 0.0.2/3 and Sapphire and I believe Liquid all run this and have for a while.

    • I checked mine and it says that it is the older model but when I try to upgrade it says it is bad did I do something wrong.

  • Corkis84

Never preformed a factory reset while using a custom rom. Does clearing data and cacha suffice?

    Currently on BB 0.5

  • CivilDroid

I'm running a rooted stock 2.2 frgo1b. Will this stop the annoying update notifications? Also any stock Rom w a black bar recommended? Thanks

  • What is the benefit of this over frg22 or whatever the official update was?

    • Nobody really knows yet. We've all been doing research.

  • Mine's Liquid Frozen.

  • Kaufkin

comment and review; I d/l'ed the ODEXED version (I'm bone stock, but rooted). downloaded and copied to root of SD Card using filename as/is. installed using rom manager. Unplugged USB cord, (was giving bootloader hickups – oops) and rebooted. ROM Manager took over, installed. no errors, no wipe. first boot is a LONG one. don't panic. seems to be minor bugfix. I use Launcherpro so not sure if 5 homescreens is new or not, but WTF, it's there. Launcherpro is still better then stock. all apps run, overclock widget still appears to work fine. no problems w/ market at first glance. … again, from stock to ODEXED, no wipe appears to be necessary.

    • Kaufkin

ps. just ran titanium backup, runs fine, so yeah, all you “I lost root” consipiracy theorists can relax. 😉

      • but STILL cannot find an upside to flashing this…..nothing new or better….then why bother….if it aint broke….why fix it…

        • Kaufkin

NFC. possibly smoother. i did the memory flash hack, (not sure if I just erased it…hmmm have to check) but it SEEMS to be smoother running launcherpro. switched back to standard launcher, and it was 5 screens, w/ 2 hotkeys, but since I don't remember the last time I ran a stock launcher, I can't tell you when that update came through. *shrug* could have been a while ago, and I never would have noticed.

  • PatriotVirus

Been running Sapphire 1.1.4 which is 2.2.1

  • Dmon21382

Ultimate Droid V1.0 has been using this build for over a month now.

  • I'm stock rooted. When I boot into recovery mode, it just shows the droid and triangle icon. Am I doing anything wrong?

    • ryanallaire

I believe when u come to the triangle, your then supposed to push the camera and volume button at the same time to get to the recovery screen..

  • Stelv81

Ultimate Droid 1.0 already uses FRG83

  • RoadsterHD1

Chevy's 4.9 is out. Does anyone have the link for it?

  • Prickee

I'm running CM6 RC3 on my D1 and it shows im running FRG22D. So if I do this with anything change on my custom ROM???

    • Ummmm ya, you won’t be running Cyanogenmod anymore.

  • The350zWolf

I am starting to love my D2, but this is exactly the reason why I don't give up my OG Droid. OG Droid, best droid ever!

  • P-man

UD 1.0.0 is a FRG83 build. It has been out and running smooth on my D1 for some time now, just an FYI.

  • FortitudineVincimus

I will get it if Pete makes it.. who even made this one rooted?

    • blackcatroad

Team Black Hat (P3Droid) over at mydroidworld.com is where I saw it first

  • boardjnky4

google still not supporting all of exchange's security policies, booooooo

  • John

Just run a quality built from source ROM and you won't have to worry about these updates, as the devs pull code straight from google, so often times these ROMs will be NEWER than even a release that was dumped the same day. Make sense?

    • John

What I'm saying is, this isn't the first “FRG83” ROM in the wild because all built from source ROMs released in the past month or so will already have the changes.

  • Mjm1996

What are the improvments in this version vs FRG83?

  • Bensnake82

Can I use that new root app in the market to root my droid

  • Taken from XDA for anyone wondering about odex vs. deodex….

“Deodexed ROMs allow the developer to more easily customize the phone interface.

For example, if you want to change icons or application configuration files. They are not packaged up in a deoxed rom. This allows them to be edited after the ROM is distributed.

There are alot of rom modifications that can only be flashed overtop of a deoxed rom. This is because they need to edit the system files that are packaged in a odex rom. This is where you have to pay attention.”

    • Inquisitor

That's the only difference? If so, what's the appeal to using odexed roms?

      • Google this….

        “deodex vs. odex”

That's how I learned back in the day 🙂

        • google is your best friend 🙂

        • Chris G

That's the kind of answer i'd smack my sister upside the head for giving me.

          • Here, this makes it easier:

          • BigFonz

I love that site. I send it to family members regularly.

          • Tergiversator_Maximus

That’s awesome. My life is better knowing that that exists.

          • I feel bad for your sister then, cause that's the only answers you're getting out of me from now on, bromeo 😛

          • Inquisitor

I would just like to say I am fine with that answer and appreciative of your time. No smacking necessary please.

          • Chris G

Oh i'm fine with it too.

But it is that type of answer.

      • InvaderDJ

From what I understand due to the odex files being there the ROM may run a bit smoother and may save on battery life. In my experience I haven't noticed too much of a difference to make an odex'ed ROM worth it, I still have similar battery life and it doesn't seem much smoother or perform better but some people swear by it.

Try both out for a few days and see which one works better for you, if you don't care about theming there really isn't any reason to not go odex'd.

      • The350zWolf

Since Tim already pulled your ear, here is the simple answer: odexed roms run faster and more efficient, deodexed take time to build the davik cache. If you don't know what dalvik cache is, go look it up :^P

whats the difference between deodexed and odexed? clarification would be GREAT!

  • Will this work on Latin American or European Droids aswell? 'Cause Droids were not updated to 2.2 yet there.

    • Inquisitor

Likely not, considering they actually aren't droids but Milestones. I haven't read much about its development progress, since i don't have one, but i think i heard they managed to port froyo to it. don't quote me though, i suggest checking xda. but this update will almost certainly not work on the milestone.

  • CM6.1 RC3 is already based off this version (for those who were wondering)

    • PyroHoltz

This was the first thing that came to mind when reading the post. Good point Muffnman.

      CyanogenMod FTW!

      • brando56894

Thats what I was thinking since I was talking to my friend yesterday who has an Incredible and he said something about the Android version being 2.2.1 and I said yea I have it too but his build number was FRG83 while mine was FRG22D. I guess this updates us to FRG83

      • iamaLlama

Her! I know the Muffnman! He stole my cookies!

    • Spoonface

Then why does it still say FRG22D when I boot CM 6.1 RC 3 ?

  • Hopefully this will be “Beasted” soon.

  • Nideda24

  • Sure would be great to get a changelog on this. What's the point of installing it?

    • Inquisitor

from what i've read it's just a big fix. fixed some audio codec functionality, exchange problems, made launcher and gallery a bit smoother, etc. there were rumors it also broke the universal androot workaround, but i don't know if that's true or not. i'll just wait till this is incorporated into CM, or better yet when the Gingerbread SDK comes and CM uses that! 😀

      • Well, this sounds nice, but seeing a changelog or some other documentation to read details would be helpful. It comes rooted, so I'm not worried about that. If you have any links at all on the fixes/enhancements, do please share 🙂

        • Inquisitor

Nah, I just used google. sorry man.

    • Nideda24

Looks like we are on the same page.

I've been running 2.2.1 with CM 6.1 RC3 and loving it! Build number is still FRG22D though.
