  • Vivo is the OEM That Utilizes Synaptics’ Clear ID Fingerprint Reader

Vivo is the OEM That Utilizes Synaptics’ Clear ID Fingerprint Reader

Earlier this week, Synpatics announced that a top 5 OEM would showcase its Clear ID fingerprint technology in a Tier 1 smartphone. Well, we don’t have to wait for next month’s CES to find out who that top 5 OEM is, as we now know it is Vivo that will showcase the under-display technology, with Forbes going hands-on with a pre-production unit with Clear ID onboard.

Thanks to the photo above, we can see that the experience is much like you’d expect. Whether your finger is dry, wet, hot, cold, etc., the under-display CMOS image sensor utilizes the display to light up your fingerprint, capture an image of it, then unlocks your device.

According to Synpatics, Clear ID is not just twice as fast as 3D facial recognition technology like that seen in the iPhone X, but it’s a lot cheaper to incorporate, too.

As told by Forbes, the process of unlocking the device was simple enough, but could be streamlined a bit. Apparently, the display has to be woken from the power button, then the finger goes on the display to be unlocked. Written in the report, “I am expecting Vivo to modify the experience, so I just have to ‘hold to wake’ so I do not even have to use the button.” At least from our perspective, that would be much better.

Because this is Vivo, we aren’t exactly sure if we’ll see this technology hit the US too soon. We may have to wait for another OEM that has an actual US presence to utilize Clear ID. The tech itself is looking quite promising, though.

    Thoughts?

  • Under-Display Fingerprint Reader Will be Showcased by “Top Five” OEM Next Month

Under-Display Fingerprint Reader Will be Showcased by “Top Five” OEM Next Month

Big news from Synaptics today, with the company announcing that we will finally get a look at under-display fingerprint reading technology next month at CES. Not only will Synaptics be demoing Clear ID Optical Sensors for all to see, but according to them, it will be showcased on a Tier 1 (flagship) device from a “Top 5” OEM.

Oh yes, this is all hands on deck news, folks.

Now, we’ve heard about Synaptics working with OEMs on this tech before, but the biggest name that gets shopped around when it comes to under-display fingerprint readers is Samsung. According to reports, the Galaxy S8 might’ve had this exact technology onboard, but time constraints forced Samsung to abandon it. At this same time last year, Synaptics unveiled its FS9100 optical sensor, which we believe was intended to ship with the Galaxy S8. Due to the aforementioned timing issues, it could be the Galaxy S9 that receives this highly sought after upgrade.

Stated by Synaptics, “Clear ID performance is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition and requires only one touch to access your smartphone.” At CES, the company will show off the FS9500 optical solution, which is the latest generation.

Now, while signs may point to Samsung for something like this, it’s entirely possible it will be a different OEM. What we do know is that it’s a Top 5 OEM, meaning it could be Samsung, OPPO, Huawei, Vivo, or Xiaomi. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Maybe CES won’t be such a drag this year after all?
