Android L may be nigh upon us, hopefully accompanied by a few new Nexus devices, but work has reportedly already begun on the version to follow. Spotted first by myce, two commit comments in the Android source code reference an “M” release.
Neither note is particularly indicative of what we can expect from “M” – one refers to an experimental feature of the Android debugging tool Logcat, and the other a method of data exchange, but notably, they are the first mentions of a version of Android beyond L we have seen.
Of course, the commenters may have written “M” merely as a placeholder for a yet-to-be-determined name, just as we have currently with Android “L.”
Still, it’s a logical choice – “M” would fit with the alphabetical scheme Google has followed since Cupcake. The only question? Google’s choice of dessert codename. We suggest Marshmallow.
