Your smartphone isn’t quite ready for true 5G yet, but that hasn’t stopped carriers from taking additional steps to build up their networks as we get there. T-Mobile has been vocal in recent years about the investment they’ve made in their LTE network to help them compete with Verizon and AT&T. We’ve seen them win nationwide speed battles, and they often are quick to point out how they’ve tested or deployed new tech that their competition has hardly sniffed.

Yesterday, their CTO Neville Ray dropped the entire list of T-Mobile LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) markets on us to show just how fast they are rolling out some of these technologies. The list includes 920+ markets, 430 of which can take advantage of the “trifecta” of speed boosters that includes carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO, and 256 QAM.

For regular LTE-A markets, you’ll see up to double your current download speeds. If you hang out in a “trifecta” market, your speeds will double on top of that. So look, we’re not talking about 1Gig speeds, but if you were once getting 40Mbps down, you could jump to 80Mbps or 160Mbps or beyond, without doing anything extra, depending on where you live. Verizon told us that on their LTE-A network, you could see up to 300Mbps down. We have no reason to believe that T-Mobile’s network isn’t capable of similar speeds.

Curious if your phone is supported? It should be. As you’ll see from this list over at Wikipedia, most phones released within the past 3 years are ready for LTE-A.

To see the full list of T-Mobile LTE-A markets, download this file. (It’s a PDF and it’s hosted by T-Mobile.)

T-Mobile brought back their buy one, get one free phone deal today to kick off their holiday shopping season. That means you can buy two Galaxy S8 or Note 8 devices and one will be free, as long as you follow a set of steps and don’t expect that second phone to be free up front. Yes, T-Mobile puts you through as many hoops as Verizon, if not more.

T-Mobile BOGO Free Deal

So here’s the deal. To take advantage of T-Mobile’s BOGO holiday deal, you have to buy two phones on their Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) and activate at least one new line. Because the phones available are top tier phones with high prices, you’ll have to pay a down payment of anywhere from $80 to $130 on each to get the EIP’s monthly payment started. The phones you can choose from are the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Note 8, Galaxy S8 Active, LG G6, V20, V30, and V30+, as well as some iPhone models.

Wait, how does the second phone become free then? It sure sounds like I still have to pay a lot upfront? Correct! Remember all those hoops I mentioned in the opening? Here they are!

The second phone becomes free after T-Mobile sends you a rebate for the cost of the phone that you can then apply to its EIP. To get the rebate (and don’t forget), you’ll have to head over to T-Mobile’s Promotions Center and enter in a specific code that verifies your eligibility. Assuming that works as advertised, the rebate arrives to you within 8 weeks in the form of a prepaid MasterCard. So that means you have not only paid a down payment for your “free” phone and signed up for a new line of service that has a monthly fee, you’ve likely also paid for two months worth of EIP payments. Free, though!

The deal is available to all customers, including new and existing.

To take advantage of T-Mobile’s holiday deals line-up, including this BOGO deal, head over to the T-Mobile Deals Hub.

At a media event today in San Jose, CA, both Qualcomm and T-Mobile met with press to showcase the power of Gigabit Class LTE on T-Mobile’s network using Android phones featuring Snapdragon Gigabit LTE modems.

Tests were performed using VR streams, file downloading from cloud storage, as well as media downloading for offline playback (movies & tv shows). As for which devices were being used, there was the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, Moto Z2 Force, and LG V30.

Qualcomm doesn’t specify what speeds were being reached during testing, but they did go over what type of technologies T-Mobile is utilizing, plus T-Mobile highlighted another type of advanced LTE tech they intend to incorporate into its network soon. According to T-Mobile, its LTE Advanced network now reaches 920 markets, with 430 of those markets leveraging carrier aggregation, 4X4 MIMO and 256 QAM.

In addition, T-Mobile highlighted LAA (License Assisted Access), which taps into unlicensed spectrum on small cells to further densify the network for even more capacity and speed. LAA is said to arrive to T-Mobile’s network this year.

If you like speed, things are heating up.

T-Mobile announced this morning that it has teamed up with Nest to offer a cellular-equipped version of its new Nest Secure product. With this partnership, you’ll be able to get Nest Secure that has additional cellular backup and notification capabilities powered by T-Mobile’s network.

According to T-Mobile, their offer includes a Nest Secure system (Nest Guard keypad, 2 Nest Detect motion sensors, and 2 Nest Tags) plus a Nest Cam Indoor for a total price of $480. To pay for it, you’ll put down $240 upfront, followed by $10 monthly payments for 24 months to finish out the full cost. For those keeping track, that’s essentially a $20 discount off the Nest Secure, plus a free Nest Cam Indoor ($199 value). That’s not a bad price!

Keep in mind that T-Mobile does require a $10 per month service plan (after $5 credit) on top of the equipment plan, so for the first 2 years with Nest Secure, it’ll cost you $240 upfront, followed by $20 per month in fees (equipment plan + service fee). The $10 cellular service plan covers unlimited cellular backups for Nest Secure, as well as Nest Aware for 10 days worth of recordings on the Nest Cam Indoor that is included.

How does this Nest Secure differ from the one you can by from Nest? Again, it’s all about the cellular capabilities, which are built right in. With backups also happening via cellular T-Mobile connection, you’ll have access to them at any time, even if the power goes out or your WiFi is down. Additionally, with WiFi down or power out, you’ll still get notifications from Nest Secure, thanks to the network connection.

For those curious, the Nest Guard in this special Nest Secure has a Cat 1 LTE module inside that connects to LTE bands 2, 4, and 12.

Nest Secure with T-Mobile arrives November 10. More info can be found here.

What is the LG V30+, you ask? It’s the LG V30 with 128GB of storage and a special pair of QuadPlay ear buds. That’s it. Those are the only differences. You still get the same set of specs, including that dual camera setup, Snapdragon 835, water resistance, and 6-inch POLED display.

According to the latest report from The Wall Street Journal, T-Mobile has sent another offer to Sprint, in a desperate attempt to make a merger between the two happen, with it said a deal could still be made “within weeks.”

This news follows a report from earlier this week that the merger was basically dead, stemming from SoftBank’s (Sprint’s parent) desire to not give up too much control in a merger with T-Mobile. As the previous deal outlined, T-Mobile’s parent, Deutsche Telekom, would be steering the ship should a merger take place.

As reported, T-Mobile’s John Legere called Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure on Wednesday, saying how he didn’t want the deal to fall through.

Of course, the main takeaway from all of this is that the deal could still not happen, but even if it does, it has to go through regulators. You can argue that a merger makes sense with relation to competition with AT&T and Verizon, but the negative is that the US consumer loses out on a few options for their wireless service. Less competition is not a good thing, in this case.

We’ll keep you posted.

According to Nikkei and the Wall Street Journal, Sprint and T-Mobile are no longer negotiating and will likely soon call off steps towards a merger. That news comes as somewhat of a shock, as reports for weeks have suggested that the companies may announce a merger before the end of October. That idea seemed even more likely last week as each released Q3 earnings without live calls or fielding questions, leading many to believe that they would announce something within days.

Today’s reports say that SoftBank’s (Sprint’s parent company) board met over the weekend and decided that they weren’t willing to give up control of Sprint to Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile’s parent), which had previously been the proposed arrangement. SoftBank could officially tell T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom either today or tomorrow that the merger won’t happen.

No matter what you think of this news, it certainly means that the US wireless industry will continue to operate with the same four major players. Sprint will have to heavily invest in network going forward if they want to seriously compete, just like T-Mobile has been and continues to do. I don’t know that either will close in on Verizon or AT&T in the near future, but T-Mobile has shown that it has figured out how to add customers in a time where everyone else seems to be shedding them.

This sad news or did you not really care to begin with?

T-Mobile is currently hosting a promo, offering buyers of the newly launched LG V30 to get a second V30 device at $500 off. There are a few requirements, but that’s nothing new for deals such as this.

To lay it out as simply as possible, folks will need to purchase two V30 devices on an EIP (equipment installment plan) agreement and activate a 2nd line. Then, once you have your phones, enter in your purchase details on T-Mobile’s promotion website, then you’ll receive a prepaid MasterCard with a value of up $500.

There are a few more ways you can utilize this promo, but we’ll let T-Mobile explain.

T-Mobile customers can mix and match this offer and get up to $500 back on the equal or lower cost device. In other words, that’s $500 MORE you’ll have to spend on all things pumpkin spice this October.

And, if you’ve been thinking about taking home a tablet, now is the time! Un-carrier customers can combine this offer and get a G Pad X or G Pad X2 PLUS on us when activated on EIP with a qualifying rate plan.

For pricing the LG V30 is listed at $80 down and $30/month with a full retail price of $800.

It’s not quite a BOGO deal, but it is a BOGOF500O deal. Still, not bad. Follow the link below to get started.

Back in 2015, T-Mobile introduced a new feature to its line-up of data plans called “Mobile Without Borders.” As the name suggests, your plan ignored borders in North America, allowing you to travel to and from Canada or Mexico without having to worry about data usage. The big selling points were the fact that you just got to use your data when in those two countries without needing a special roaming plan or worrying about limits. On November 12, that will no longer be the case.

T-Mobile is now putting a 5GB per month cap on Mobile Without Borders. The change affects those on T-Mobile ONE, Simple Choice North America, and legacy rate plans. Those plans, when traveling in and out of Canada/Mexico will get a maximum of 5GB of high-speed or 4G LTE data, followed by a throttle to 128kbps thereafter. If on T-Mobile ONE Plus, those speeds will drop to 256kbps.

Why would T-Mobile make this change? They said that some meanies were likely taking advantage of the openness to data usage in Mexico and Canada and want to “prevent usage beyond the intent of the product.” They added that “less than 1% of people” who use this benefit in Canada and Mexico ever eclipse 5GB per month.

So wait, the feature was sold as all of us being able to use our data in Canada and Mexico just like we do in the US. What exactly is the “usage beyond the intent” supposed to mean then? That sure sounds like T-Mobile admitting that they didn’t actually want you to “use LTE data in Mexico & Canada just like in the U.S.” and that the hope all along is that you’d hardly tap into your plan’s bucket. Hey, misleading!

Again, the change happens on November 12. To learn more, hit up that link below. Also, you’ll find a chart below that describes future usage availability.

According to a report out of Bloomberg, T-Mobile and Sprint are now “ironing out” the final details on a merger that could be announced as early as the end of October. The announcement could happen as each carrier presents its Q3 earnings in just a few weeks.

The move, as you fully understand, would change the US wireless landscape pretty dramatically. Instead of having four major nationwide wireless carriers, we would have just three. The move could allow a combination of T-Mobile and Sprint to better compete with Verizon and AT&T, though one could argue that T-Mobile is doing a solid job of chipping away at both on its own. A merger has the ability to speed that process up, I guess.

No one from any side of the deal would comment, as you can probably imagine. And let’s also not forget that this big of a merger would need approval by higher powers.

We’ll let you know more as things shake out!

It’s LG V30 Day today! I know that we all have a bit of a Pixel 2 hangover, but there really is another brilliant phone from LG arriving this morning that you should strongly consider.

The LG V30 is the latest in the V series from LG and it’s arguably the best phone they’ve ever made (maybe by a mile). It sports that same 6-inch POLED QHD display as is in the new Pixel 2 XL, along with a Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, IP68 water and dust resistance, wireless charging, 3300mAh battery, fingerprint sensor, and Quad DAC. It also has one of the best dual camera setups in the business with its combination of standard 16MP shooter and 13MP wide-angle camera. It is easily my favorite dual camera setup of them all.

If interested, Verizon has the device in-store, ready to ship today, October 5. AT&T has it available on their site and will get units in-store tomorrow, October 6. T-Mobile has a pre-order open right now and plans to have the phones to you by October 13. The phone costs around $800 at full retail everywhere, but everyone has their device payment plans these days to make that more manageable. More pricing details can be found here.

We haven’t reviewed the LG V30 yet. Don’t worry, we will soon. My initial thoughts, though, after spending a handful of weeks with a pre-production unit are that you won’t be disappointed.

While Verizon is the exclusive carrier partner for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, that won’t stop T-Mobile from doing its usual thing. Following Google’s unveiling of its latest phones, T-Mobile laid out a promotion specifically for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL buyers, which can net them a free $325.

Detailed in T-Mobile’s announcement, all Pixel 2 buyers have to do is purchase their phone via the Google Store or Verizon, then simply switch a single voice line over to T-Mobile (or activate a new line of service) and sign up for a T-Mobile ONE plan. It’s being marketed as a “BYOPixel” promotion. Very cute.

For specifics, “Simply purchase an unlocked Pixel from Google, Verizon or other original retailer, port in a number or activate a new line of service, sign up for T-Mobile ONE and then enter the details at T-Mobile’s online validation site.” According to T-Mobile, existing customers can get in on the deal, too, when they add a line of T-Mobile ONE or Simple Choice Unlimited.

You will receive the $325 in the form of a prepaid MasterCard card, usable wherever the card is accepted.

If this promotion entices you, follow the link below.

According to Venture Beat, the Galaxy S8 Active won’t be an exclusive for AT&T forever. As reported, the device will be making its way to T-Mobile at some point, even though there are no specifics on when this will happen.

Since the launch of this Samsung lineup, none of these Active-branded phones have been available anywhere other than AT&T, and owners sure do seem to love them. They have great specs, sometimes nearly identical to the standard version but with bigger batteries and robust hardware designs. It’s easy to see why some would enjoy them.

For the Galaxy S8 Active, it features a shatter resistant 5.8-inch QHD Super AMOLED Display with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, 4000mAh battery (with wireless charging), 12MP f/1.7 Dual Pixel rear camera, 8MP f/1.7 front camera, Bixby, and an outer shell made of military-grade materials that is shatter, dust, and water resistant (MIL-STD-810G). Not bad.

The only thing we don’t know is when the phone will arrive. Soon? Not-so-soon? No ones know yet, but it is coming, apparently.
