Big news from Synaptics today, with the company announcing that we will finally get a look at under-display fingerprint reading technology next month at CES. Not only will Synaptics be demoing Clear ID Optical Sensors for all to see, but according to them, it will be showcased on a Tier 1 (flagship) device from a “Top 5” OEM.

Oh yes, this is all hands on deck news, folks.

Now, we’ve heard about Synaptics working with OEMs on this tech before, but the biggest name that gets shopped around when it comes to under-display fingerprint readers is Samsung. According to reports, the Galaxy S8 might’ve had this exact technology onboard, but time constraints forced Samsung to abandon it. At this same time last year, Synaptics unveiled its FS9100 optical sensor, which we believe was intended to ship with the Galaxy S8. Due to the aforementioned timing issues, it could be the Galaxy S9 that receives this highly sought after upgrade.

Stated by Synaptics, “Clear ID performance is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition and requires only one touch to access your smartphone.” At CES, the company will show off the FS9500 optical solution, which is the latest generation.

Now, while signs may point to Samsung for something like this, it’s entirely possible it will be a different OEM. What we do know is that it’s a Top 5 OEM, meaning it could be Samsung, OPPO, Huawei, Vivo, or Xiaomi. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Maybe CES won’t be such a drag this year after all?

If Samsung really wants to keep hacking $400 off the price of their phones with select trade-ins, we’ll have to keep telling you about it. And that’s what happened starting this morning – the $400-off with instant trade credit deal is back for the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8, although this time, it’s even better.

Samsung has not only raised the trade-in limit to $400 (from $300) again for the first time since Black Friday, they are also including new phones that’ll get you up to $400 off. You’ve still got trade options including the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and Pixel and Pixel XL, but you can now trade-in a LG V20, Galaxy S7 Active, Galaxy Note 5, or iPhone 8/8 Plus and get $400 off as well.

With $400 off, we’re talking a Galaxy S8 for $325, Galaxy S8+ for $425, or the Galaxy Note 8 for $550. Those are the unlocked model prices, anyway, so the carrier variants they sell could differ. Still, those prices are nuts!

Of course, if you don’t have one of those phones I just mentioned to trade, Samsung will take others and give you $300, $200, and $150 off. You can see the full list here.

How does this work? I’ll grab the instructions we previously wrote up and include them below because I think they cover it well.

  1. Head to Samsung’s site to pick out the Galaxy S8, S8+ or Note 8 model you want.
  2. Choose a carrier model or the unlocked version and then the color.
  3. You’ll then find a trade-in device page that lists out acceptable devices.
  4. Click on the device grouping for the device you have.
  5. Decide on whether or not you want their Premium Care.
  6. Decide on discounted accessories.
  7. Then begin the checkout process for your pre-order.
  8. You should see the instant discount in cart for your trade-in.

Why is this the best deal? The beauty of these deals from Samsung is the instant discount. While others offer trade-in programs, most make you pay the full price for your new phone upfront before asking you to send in your old phone that can be assessed and then credit given. We’re talking about a multi-week process that leaves you without cash. Should you choose Samsung’s instant trade-in offer, they trust that you have the phone to trade-in that you say you do and just give you the money off upfront. You then send in your phone after you get your new Galaxy and they’ll assess it and let you know that all is good. It’s a pretty great process.

I’d imagine the deal is good for a limited time. If you had an S8, S8+, or Note 8 in your sights, now would be the time.

Verizon is expecting the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to be the next phones prepped for the launch of their Gigabit LTE network, which should happen any day now. Support pages for the Galaxy S8 line were updated last night to show that new Gigabit LTE access is on the way before the end of 2017.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ will join the Moto Z2 as the first phones primed for Verizon Gigabit LTE.

For some reason, Verizon pulled the update notes, but we’ve had readers reach out to tell us that they received the new software. The new software builds will land as G950USQU2BQK5 for the Galaxy S8 and G955USQU2BQK5 for the Galaxy S8+. Both are also getting the November security patch.

As you’ll see in the notes below, Verizon still isn’t giving us an exact date to prepare for the arrival of Gigabit LTE, yet they keep saying “late 2017” or “later this year.” I don’t know if anyone has told Verizon, but it’s December 8 and there are only 23 days left in this year.

Android® Security Patch Level: 2017-11-01

The current software update provides the most up to date Android security patches on your Galaxy S8+, along with support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) when switching to Verizon from select carriers, as well as the addition of Samsung Pay.

Gigabit Class LTE Service

Samsung Galaxy S8+ can now take full advantage of the most advanced 4G LTE technology when Verizon launches its Gigabit Class LTE service, providing access to peak speeds far exceeding most phones in the market today*.

Transfer movies, photos and large files in no time with some of the fastest possible data speeds so you can spend more time watching what you love and less time waiting for it to download.

*Available in late 2017 when operating on a “Gigabit Class LTE” wireless network; not available in all areas.

When you get Gigabit LTE, what should you expect? Verizon suggests “peak speeds far exceeding most phones in the market today,” which is not at all specific. I doubt any of us will get full 1 Gigabit speeds, but don’t be surprised if we’re seeing 3-4x normal speeds. I’d love a 400Mbps download from Big Red. Upload speeds will still be slower, though, and top out at around 150Mbps in ideal conditions.

We’ll let you know when Verizon finally launches this damn Gigabit LTE network.

Samsung is already days into their “12 days of joy” promo that showcases handfuls of new deals every day up until Xmas. We haven’t seen any great ones just yet, but today they are hosting a deal for the Gear Fit2 Pro, their new fitness tracker, that gets you a free pair of U Flex headphones with purchase.

The Gear Fit2 Pro costs $199 and the U Flex headphones cost $80, so with this deal, you’ll pay just $199 and get the $80 headphones for free. That’s a pretty decent deal.

The new Gear Fit2 Pro is the newest version of a fitness tracker I reviewed pretty positively. It has solid battery life with its big ol’ display, GPS, heart rate monitoring, is a decent size and shape for your wrist, and now comes with 5ATM water resistance. The U Flex headphones are of the dog-collar trend, yet are unique in that they do flex like crazy. These should be a good workout combo.

To get the deal, you only have to hit the link below and add a Gear Fit2 Pro to your cart. The U Flex headphones will then be added automatically.

I don’t know that I’d suggest that 256GB of storage in a phone has become commonplace just yet, but Samsung is ready to move well beyond that. The Korean electronics giant announced today that they are now mass producing 512GB eUFS  chips for flagship smartphones and tablets, doubling their previous efforts.

Samsung says they are the first to mass produce these 64-layer 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND chips and that these will provide “unparalleled storage capacity and outstanding performance for upcoming” devices. In terms of storage, we’re talking over 100 4K Ultra HD video files with a 10-minute duration.

These new 512GB storage units can read at 860MB/s and write at 255MB/s, which amounts to a 5GB HD video clip transfer in six seconds. Those speeds are “over eight times faster than a typical microSD card,” according to Samsung. And they are right, even the A1 microSD cards from SanDisk, which are some of the fastest in the industry, top out at around 100MB/s.

As for other specs, Samsung introduced power management technology here with an “advanced circuit design” in the chip’s controller that aims to minimize any increase in energy consumed. Finally, these new 512GB eUFS chips can read 42,000 IOPS and write 40,000 IOPS.

I don’t know that anyone is expecting a 512GB storage option in the Galaxy S9, but maybe the Note 9 or the next wave of Samsung tablets? You ready for that much onboard, ultra-fast storage?

Samsung announced today that it has begun mass production on processors built on their 2nd generation 10nm FinFET process. While their press release didn’t say specifically, I think it’s safe to assume that this 2nd gen 10nm process will make its way into your next phone (Galaxy S9), likely in the form of the Snapdragon 845 or the next-gen Exynos chipset from Samsung.

We all know that Qualcomm and Samsung have teamed up for a decade-long partnership that allows Samsung to produce their premium Snapdragon chipsets. So if we look to last year in an attempt to see where today’s announcement is headed, the schedule of events that led up to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 started with Samsung announcing their first 10nm process mass production. Within a month of that happening, Qualcomm followed up with an unveiling of the Snapdragon 835, alongside Samsung.

Today, we’ve got the announcement of this 2nd gen 10nm processor that is built for “System-on-chip (SoC) products.” On December 5, Qualcomm is hosting their 2nd annual Snapdragon Technology Summit Keynote from Hawaii, where they’ll share announcements surrounding the platform. Since Samsung has unveiled their next-gen 10nm process, I’d be shocked if Qualcomm doesn’t give us the goods on the 845 next week.

Qualcomm plans to live stream the event starting at 10:30AM Pacific (1:30PM Eastern) at www.qualcomm.com.

Speculation aside, what’s the big deal with this 2nd generation 10nm process? Samsung is calling this 10LPP (Low Power Plus) and says to expect up to 10% higher performance or 15% lower power consumption compared to last year’s 1st gen 10nm process. That may not seem like a massive increase, but the Snapdragon 835 proved to be quite the efficient little beast. If we can see 10% and 15% improvements in those two key areas for the Snapdragon 845, I’m here for all of that.

Back in early August, I told you that Samsung was off to a heck of a start in keeping the US unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ up to date. It was worth pointing out at the time because many were hesitating on purchasing one thanks to Samsung’s terrible update record with the previous year’s unlocked Galaxy S7 line. Within the first couple of months, the US unlocked S8 and S8+ had seen two updates and were current with carrier models, something that almost never happened the year before. They even received one more in August with the August security patch after I gave Samsung praise.

After the August update showed up, though, Samsung stopped updating the unlocked S8 and S8+ for months.

Well, it did until today when Samsung pushed out a new update to the unlocked models as G950U1UEU2AQK2 and G955U1UEU2AQK2. So if we’re keeping track, Samsung issued three updates within the first three months of each phone’s existence, then stopped for almost three full months, while still updating the carrier variants. OK, then.

Today’s update includes stability improvements, “new and / or enhanced features” that aren’t detailed in the changelog, and the November security patch. It’s rolling out right now if you want it, just head into Settings>System update.

Last year, we all assumed that Samsung was updating the unlocked S7 line on a quarterly basis and were hoping Samsung wouldn’t do the same with its newest phones. A quarterly schedule is not exactly a great schedule, especially as these monthly security patches become more and more important. Since the unlocked S8 and S8+ stopped seeing updates, we’ve had both the Blueborne and KRACK vulnerabilities surface, both of which were incredibly serious and should have been patched as soon as possible. Samsung and its carrier partners updated carrier variants within weeks in some cases, yet the unlocked models haven’t been touched since August.

So in July we were close to recommending that you skip all carrier models and figure out a way to buy the unlocked S8 and S8+. Today, I’d suggest that you remain as skeptical about the update situation as we were with last year’s unlocked S7 line. Samsung is good one month and then not so much for an entire quarter. If you are worried about having the latest in security, these may not be the phones for you.

On a related note, it looks like the unlocked Galaxy Note 8 is getting a similar update today.

Samsung announced a new color for the Galaxy S8 this week, with initial availability starting today in South Korea.

The color is named Burgundy Red, and to us, it looks pretty nice. The front side of the phone is the same, but we have a dark red color on the back, which I think contrasts very well.

Samsung has yet to offer specific launch details for anywhere outside of Korea, but that information should be coming soon.

Personally, I’d love to see a brighter option, such as a bright red or bright blue, but this is still nice looking. Once we get word on a possible US launch, we’ll let you know.

Their graphene balls, guys.

It’s true, though – Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) has developed a graphene ball that will not only increase capacity of batteries in your phones (and electric vehicles too), they’ll charge insanely fast too. After years and years of us complaining about battery tech never moving, Samsung may have found something fun to talk about and also look forward to.

Here is what we know. Lithium-ion batteries aren’t so fun anymore because we’ve probably maxed out how fast they can charge and their limits on capacity. Enter the magical graphene ball. Samsung says that a graphene ball enables a 45% increase in capacity and also charges five times faster. They do this while maintaining a “highly stable” 60 degree  Celsius temperature, which is important, right Note 7?

Think about this now – instead of it taking you an hour to charge your phone, you may be able to fully charge one in 12 minutes. TWELVE. MINUTES. FULL. CHARGE. We’ve got companies running around right now bragging about getting a few hours worth of juice in 15 minutes, but with some graphene ball action up-in-ya-flip-phone, you’d be fully charged and beer pounded in that amount of time.

We aren’t sure when Samsung will be able to produce a battery that is ready for consumer use, but they are filing for patents in the US and Korea already.

If all of that sounds interesting to you, but you need more, including the dirty science, you can read about it right here.

For most of the year, Samsung has hosted one of the best deals in all of smartphones. They have been running a trade-in program that gets you an instant discount before you ever pay for the new phone you want, saving you instant cash upfront, unlike others who make you wait to get a trade credit back. For Black Friday, they have upped the trade-in cost too and are now dropping up to $400 off your next smartphone, assuming it’s a Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, or Galaxy Note 8.

In order to get the $400 off price, you’ll have to trade-in a device off of Samsung’s specific list. The phones that’ll get you $400 off the Galaxy S8, S8+, or Note 8 are the Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, and Google Pixel or Pixel XL. They’ll also drop $300, $200, and $150 if you have another device to trade – you can see that list below.

As you hit that link below to buy your S8, S8+, or Note 8, Samsung will walk you through the trade process where you get to choose the phone you have to trade. Once you do that, you’ll see the instant discount for the value of your trade when you hit checkout. For example, a $950 Galaxy Note 8 with a $400 trade, only asks you to pay $550 today. Or that could be a Galaxy S8 for just $325.

So how do you ensure you get that trade-in price? Once your new phone arrives, you send in your trade, Samsung checks it out to make sure it meets their qualifications, and then confirms to you that your traded phone checks out and you owe no more money.

Now that we’re officially on Black Friday, some of the special deals are starting to pop-up. The best so far, for those looking to get into a new phone, may be the discount on the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note 8. Most retailers that offer this US, unlocked model have dropped $150 off the price. And that’s without a trade deal or shady 24-month payment plan.

For the unlocked Galaxy S8, that means a $150 drop to just $574.99. For the unlocked Galaxy S8+, that means a $150 drop to $674.99. And for the Note 8, that’s a $150 drop to $799.99.

As a reminder, the US, unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ work on all major US carriers, including Verizon.

At Google’s October 4 event, where they announced the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, the company took a jab at Apple’s approach to launching phones when it said that you’ll get “the same great experience on both” because they “don’t set aside better features for the larger device.” We all chuckled because small or large, you shouldn’t ever have to compromise when choosing a flagship phone. And this is something that Samsung has done over the past couple of years as well with the launch of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8. Whether you went small or + version, you got the same experience, outside of the difference in display and battery sizes.

According to a Venturebeat report this afternoon, that may not be the case when Samsung ships the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ next year.

Today’s report mentions that the Galaxy S9 (SM-G960) and Galaxy S9+ (SM-G965) will be very similar in style and feature set to the Galaxy S8 line you already know. You could think of the S9 to the S8 as the S7 was to the S6. We’re supposedly getting 5.8-inch (S9) and 6.2-inch (S9+) curved-edge Infinity displays again, along with 10nm processors (likely the Snapdragon 845 in the US), 64GB storage, and 3.5mm headphone jacks.

But there will be differences outside of size. Venturebeat says to expect more RAM in the S9+, as well as a dual-camera setup on the rear. That could mean 4GB RAM and a single rear shooter in the Galaxy S9, followed by 6GB RAM and a dual rear camera on the Galaxy S9+.

Is that the worst news in the world that is deserving of a boycott over Samsung? Well, no. But it’s a sh*tty move on their part if it happens. Some of us like smaller phones and we also might want the extra boost in RAM and flexibility of a secondary camera. That’s why Google made a specific mention of it on-stage, because we shouldn’t have to compromise that much just because we aren’t into whales.

Either way, we’ve got more. Venturebeat reports that the Galaxy S9 line will feature AKG stereo speakers (!), a centered rear-fingerprint sensor (!!) situated under a vertically aligned camera and flash, and a new DeX dock that allows the phone to lay flat and act as a touchpad or virtual keyboard when in use.

Finally, today’s report suggests that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be announced in March, but that they may be teased at CES in early January. Look, I’m not saying that that won’t happen, it’s just that every year we get a rumor around CES and the next Galaxy, yet I don’t know that Samsung has ever mentioned a new Galaxy phone at CES. I guess we’ll know here in just over a month.
